Later on by the Missionaries from Chicago in 1925 and in 1948 from Baltimore (USA), since then it is flourishing. The people (tribes) were oppressed by landlords in the beginning and they had no place in the hierarchy of Hindu caste system. It is Christianity which brought hope and development in that area, and slowly people are acknowledging their rights to live with some dignity. India is a multi-religious country, Hinduism 80%, Islam 13% Christians 3%, Buddhism, Sikhism and others. The Church in the Diocese of Gumla is purely tribal group or natives, all 96 priests are tribal and the people are mostly poor. They are dependent on little farming in their traditional way. Therefore they cannot afford much for the maintenance of the parishes, but they do contribute the very little that they have. Also, the priests do not have any kind of salaries to keep up the work of evangelization. They use their talents to uplift the groups spiritually and physically through their life-long dedication to service. Christians have always been blamed by some fanatics for converting people by allurement, but we as tribes know that we are getting our identity as persons after becoming Christians; otherwise we were nowhere according to their caste system. There are still 70% tribal people, who are pagans and have miserable lives. The only way of evangelization is education through school, supporting them through basic medications, and other needs through the parishes where our priests and nuns are involved. Thus we come to share our faith. In order to bring awareness, we look for some facilities; we do not have electricity, no running water, and no restrooms or other basic needs for the parishes and its people. Many liturgies are outdoors, people sit on the floor, and bring their own mats from home. These are some of the issues in our churches back in that part of India. We are ONLY two priests from the Diocese of Gumla, India to help the Diocese of LANSING, Fr. Louis and myself and we send our salaries back to the diocese. Though we are Diocesan Priests we contribute as much as we can so that they can be evangelized, for me this is the reason to come forward to you, a humble appeal for the mission work in the Diocese of Gumla. Your generosity would be rewarded by God. If you are able to support in the mission work of God, we would be ever grateful for your generosity. I have been here in USA for six years and I know that all of you are struggling in this bad economy. But it is amazing that you come forward to share your love to strangers with your generosity. May the Good Lord reward you all! We are grateful for the Diocese of Lansing. They are still giving us opportunity to visit parishes for the mission appeal. I am grateful for your generous support. St. Mary Catholic Parish – Sunday, June 29, 2014

Please welcome Fr. Prabhu to St. Mary on the weekend of July 12-13.

A short information about the Catholic diocese of Gumla-(North East) INDIA.

On May 28, 1993 “Gumla” was created as a new

diocese by Pope John Paul II. It is located on the

northeast of India. There are 17% Catholics among 9

Million people in the diocese. The Mission Diocese of

Gumla is new, it has to develop and stand on its own,

which is work in progress. Catholicism is only 100

years old in our area. The western church is always the

big sister to us who showed the light of Christ to the

tribes in our area around 1885, by the missionaries of

Belgium. Later on by the Missionaries from Chicago in

1925 and in 1948 from Baltimore (USA), since then it

is flourishing. The people (tribes) were oppressed by

landlords in the beginning and they had no place in the

hierarchy of Hindu caste system. It is Christianity

which brought hope and development in that area, and

slowly people are acknowledging their rights to live

with some dignity.

India is a multi-religious country, Hinduism 80%,

Islam 13% Christians 3%, Buddhism, Sikhism and

others. The Church in the Diocese of Gumla is purely

tribal group or natives, all 96 priests are tribal and the

people are mostly poor. They are dependent on little

farming in their traditional way. Therefore they cannot

afford much for the maintenance of the parishes, but

they do contribute the very little that they have. Also,

the priests do not have any kind of salaries to keep up

the work of evangelization. They use their talents to

uplift the groups spiritually and physically through their

life-long dedication to service.

Christians have always been blamed by some

fanatics for converting people by allurement, but we as

tribes know that we are getting our identity as persons

after becoming Christians; otherwise we were nowhere

according to their caste system. There are still 70%

tribal people, who are pagans and have miserable lives.

The only way of evangelization is education through

school, supporting them through basic medications, and

other needs through the parishes where our priests and

nuns are involved. Thus we come to share our faith. In

order to bring awareness, we look for some facilities;

we do not have electricity, no running water, and no

restrooms or other basic needs for the parishes and its

people. Many liturgies are outdoors, people sit on the

floor, and bring their own mats from home. These are

some of the issues in our churches back in that part of

India.

We are ONLY two priests from the Diocese of

Gumla, India to help the Diocese of LANSING, Fr.

Louis and myself and we send our salaries back to the

diocese. Though we are Diocesan Priests we contribute

as much as we can so that they can be evangelized, for

me this is the reason to come forward to you, a humble

appeal for the mission work in the Diocese of Gumla.

Your generosity would be rewarded by God. If you are

able to support in the mission work of God, we would

be ever grateful for your generosity. I have been here in

USA for six years and I know that all of you are

struggling in this bad economy. But it is amazing that

you come forward to share your love to strangers with

your generosity. May the Good Lord reward you all!

We are grateful for the Diocese of Lansing. They are

still giving us opportunity to visit parishes for the

mission appeal. I am grateful for your generous support.

May the Good Lord Bless You All!

Stewardship is… Proportionate Giving

Stewardship calls us to realize that each of us is called to give as God has given to us. We no

longer base our giving on what others are giving. We no longer excuse ourselves from giving

because we do not see others giving. Rather we give in proportion to all that God has given to us.

CASSEROLE CREW IS COMING BACK TO ST MARY!

Casserole crew is a group of people who provide meals to people experiencing challenges in their lives perhaps with divorce, illness, new baby, or death of a loved one. It is a simple act of generosity and love to reach out to our community and provide support with a meal. You don't have to be a gourmet chef to help. We need cooks to join ‘The Crew’! Call or email Julie Flaherty 734-645-2264 or [email protected] to help strengthen our community.
