St. Mary Catholic Parish – Sunday, April 27, 2014

THE RITES OF EASTER: JOY AND GLORY The joy and glory of Easter cannot be contained in a day, but are celebrated for a full fifty days until culminating in the feast of Pentecost. For the newly baptized, this is a period of Mystagogy (being “lead into the mystery”), a time for prayerful reflection on the rich experience of their sacramental journey. The symbols and rites of the Easter season are channels of this grace.

The Return of “Alleluia” The Easter season is marked by the joyful return of “Alleluia” to the liturgical celebration. Its Lenten absence represented a kind of spiritual fast, but with Christ arisen we once again feast on exuberant songs of “Alleluia” or “Praise God!” Moreover, the Easter Sunday Gospel procession is often extended in length and embellished with special musical settings. The dismissal rite is also enhanced with Alleluias, sealing our call to go forth in the peace of the risen Christ.

Prayer: Risen Lord, may we be reborn in joy and glory through the mystery of Easter

JOY AND GLORY IN THE MORNING This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. –Psalm 118:24

Christmas is a feast of midnight clear, but Easter is a celebration of miraculous dawn. The psalmist lauds the singular blessing of sunrise that even a doubting Thomas would be hard pressed to disprove: “Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning.” Easter sunrise services are liturgical counterparts of the long cherished practice of rising early for a glimpse of glorious dawn. Nighttime shadows flee morning’s illuminating rays; killing frost melts into life-giving dew; and deadening silence yields to the uplifting song of the lark.

For you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays. – Malachi 3:20

Mornings signify new beginnings and fresh starts. The very name “Easter” bids us to turn toward the brightening horizon for salvation. At dawn, the doubts and worries of night are replaced by feelings of renewal and purpose. This faith is celebrated by the iconic music of Easter: “Morning has broken, like the first morning.” Easter hymns like “All Shall Be Well” echo Julian of Norwich’s faith in happy endings, insisting that life shall prevail over death: “Dark night is done; bright morning comes at last.”

On the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb. – Luke 24:1

Easter is the culmination of the battle between life and death lauded in the Easter sequence: “Death with life contended: combat strangely ended! Life’s own Champion, slain, yet lives to reign.” After the crucifixion, the disciples hide in fear, certain that the battle is lost. The woman, however, perhaps unabashed in faith and hope, keep vigil at the tomb and found life victorious.

THANK YOU FROM

THE MEN’S CLUB St. Mary’s Men’s Club would

like to express our appreciation

for the incredible support and

help we received for our Lenten Fish Dinners. The assistance

we received from an army of volunteers is appreciated more

than words can say. From the prep crews that start every

Monday morning to the cleanup crews who stayed on Friday

night our various Parish ministries and individuals joined as

one with a simple goal: pull together as a team to provide a

family oriented event that reflects the pride and love all of us

feel for our incredible Parish. Our secret recipes have again

been hermetically sealed in the sacred mayonnaise jar and

left on Funk & Wagnall's porch to wait patiently for February

True, it is a long ways away, but we promise to do our best to

St. John Paul II and St. John the XXIII: Canonized April 27, 2014!

John Paul the Great began Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration in 1981 at St. Peter’s in Rome. Throughout his papacy, our beloved Holy Father, encouraged parishes throughout the world to begin Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. John Paul II proclaimed, “In order to evangelize the world, we need experts in celebration, adoration and contemplation of the Holy Eucharist.” (Message for World Mission Sunday, October 24 2004) “In a child’s single look fixed on the gentle Host I met the heavenly Father looking at me with love.” (“Song of the Inexhaustible Sun”) “Closeness to Christ in silence and contemplation does not distance us from our contemporaries but, on the contrary makes us attentive

and open to human joy and distress and broadens our heart on a global scale. It unites us with our brothers and sisters in humanity and particularly with children, who are the Lord's dearly beloved. Through adoration, the Christian mysteriously contributes to the radical transformation of the world and to the sowing of the Gospel. Anyone who prays to the Saviour draws the whole world with him and raises it to God. Those who stand before the Lord are therefore fulfilling an eminent service. They are presenting to Christ all those who do not know him or are far from him; they keep watch in his presence on their behalf.” (Letter to the Bishop of Liege, 1996) “I hope that this form of Adoration, with permanent exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, will continue into the future. Specifically, I hope that the fruit of this Congress results in the establishment of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration in all parishes and Christian communities throughout the world.” (45th Intl. Eucharistic Congress, Seville, Spain, June 1993) St. John Paul II’s mission has just begun. Our Holy Father continues to lead us to the twin pillars of our faith: the merciful presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist and the tender love of Mary, Our Mother. This is his true legacy to the world. John XXIII began the Second Vatican council with the hope that a new era of Eucharistic piety would pervade the Church. His writings, especially Journal of a Soul, express his love of the Blessed Sacrament. “What matters most to the good Christian community, and what may be taken as the measure of true spiritual fervor, is the love of Jesus in His Sacrament, the faithful attendance at His tabernacle.” “O Jesus, present in the Sacrament of the altar, teach all the nations to serve you with willing hearts, knowing that to serve God is to reign. May your sacrament, O Jesus, be light to the mind, strength to the will, joy to the heart. May it be the support of the weak, the comfort of the suffering, the wayfaring bread of salvation for the dying and for all the pledge of future glory. Amen.” “O Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, I would like to be filled with love for You; keep me closely united with You, may my heart be near to Yours. I want to be to You like the apostle John. O Mary of the Rosary, keep me recollected when I say these prayers of yours; bind me forever, with your rosary, to Jesus of the Blessed Sacrament. Blessed be Jesus, my love, blessed be the Immaculate Virgin Mary.” “To keep me from sin and straying from Him, God has used devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. My life vows destined to be spent in the light irradiating from the tabernacle, and it is to the Heart of Jesus that I dare go for the solution of all my problems.”

Help Needed! Summer Religious Education

Volunteers! We are so blessed to have young

people willing to embrace gifts given to them to help pass their beloved faith on

to those younger than them! I couldn’t be more thrilled with the teen and young adult response I have gotten for summer religious education! (As well as a couple of adult

Catechists!) We need more adults to help! Even if you aren’t comfortable teaching we need your gifts! Please

consider helping! We have opportunities in the classroom, office, snack and playground. As well as special projects!

We have all been given gifts to build up the Kingdom of God. Where will you or are you using yours?

As many of you know Jessica Grima has taken a full time position

at First United Methodist Church in Howell. As I can relate and

understand it was a difficult decision, but a financially necessary

one for her. We are happy for her.

So, what are we going to do? I will continue to direct and lead

youth ministry as we move forward this year. We will take the

opportunity to meet throughout the summer as well. It is truly on

my heart to “build a team” so I will be working very hard to build

up the youth ministry team and leaders (both adults and youth)

especially during the remainder of the year. We are taking a group

approach in which there is a coordinator of youth ministry that

oversees the “youth ministers” or team members sharing their gifts

with the kingdom. We have several adults that do work with youth

and will continue. We are looking for more!

(Check the website for even more opportunities!)

If you have any questions or concerns please address them to

myself. I look forward to working again and even closer with our

young people of St. Mary. In Christ, Rebecca Keiser
