    ear Friends,

in a world in which Peace is continually undermined by violence, underdevelopment and poverty, therole of ordinary people, and of young people in particular, is of vital importance for the future of thePlanet.

Therefore men and women of Peace are called upon, now more than ever, to inspire people to find out thatasserting the values of Peace means fighting today to create new opportunities in order to live in peace

    tomorrow.

And it is for this reason that ever since 1999 the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates joined the mosteminent personalities from all over the world, Nobel Peace Laureates, historians, scientists and men ofculture, building new hopes to sweep away the dark clouds covering the new millennium.

Ten years have passed since Mikhail Gorbachev had the inspiring idea of organising, for the first time in Rome, the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates. This event has grown significantly over the past years, gainingin credibility and importance, generating ideas and proposals, promoting international initiatives and campaignsto foster peace.

There are still many walls to knock down. And there are as many, if not more, bridges to be built. And thebiggest risk is that individuals and peoples are tempted by the apparent security of the non-mutability of theirsocio-cultural identity, resulting only in separation and indifference.

The only road open to us, therefore, remains that of communication, dialogue, opening up to others. This is theonly possible road ahead if we hope to build an era of peace.

I firmly believe that in this sense our job is basically to cultivate the idea that hope can win over fear; thatopening up to others and a message of global interdependence can be stronger than being narrow-minded,entrenching ourselves inside our mental confines; and that change can be a greater and more fascinating aim, even in difficult times, than keeping everything in its place, including injustices and inequalities.

If we act according to these principles we can avoid the greatest risks that the challenges of our time have putin our way, and take the only possible road: that of social cohesion, ecological equilibrium, dialogue and peace.

    9PARIS Hotel de Ville11 - 13 DECEMBER2008

On 10 December 1948, in Paris, the UN General Assembly approved theUniversal Declaration of Human Rights. This charter re-affirms the universalnature of human rights and lays down the principle of the equal dignity of

every person. By virtue of its history, its values, its culture, Paris wasnaturally destined to host this 9th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates,

which focused in particular on the question of human rights.

How to reinforce peace through the defence of human rights? Whichstrategies to pursue to consolidate the universal nature of fundamentalrights? How to promote democratic values in the world, how to strengthen

rights while removing social inequalities? A host of questions and challenges, calling into play our democratic values and their universality, and which wasthe focus of debates held during those two days.

A celebration of these values, this Summit was an extraordinary opportunity

to discuss and exchange views and to reflect on policies to be pursued toguarantee observance of the Declarations principles and further the pushfor peace in the world.

Final Declaration abstract:[] We call on the government of Burma to release Aung San Suu Kyi and

for a national dialogue to restore democracy to Burma. We call on thecountries of the Southern African Development Community to take urgentsteps to bring about a democratic solution to the problems of Zimbabwe.

We urge all States to sign and ratify all the international human rightstreaties and to establish independent national bodies to monitor andpromote their implementation.[]

    8ROME Campidoglio13 - 15 DECEMBER2007 THE NEXT GENERATION

In a world in which peace is constantly prevented by violence, poverty and injustice, all people, especially theyoung, have a vitally important role today in furthering the peaceful coexistence of the peoples of the Earthand in ensuring their very future. That is why the Nobel Peace Laureates have chosen The Next Generation asthe main theme of the 8th edition of the Summit. What kind of legacy will we leave to an increasinglyinterdependent world? Can we still hope for the peaceful progress of humanity and how can we create a culture

to sustain and support our highest aspirations? In order to deal with the new challenges of the future we willall have to answer these and many other crucial questions.

Final Declaration abstract:[] If we are to fulfil our responsibility to leave a sustainable world to the next generation, we must make surethat our political leaders have answers to these critical questions:1. What are your plans to address crushing poverty?2. What are your plans to protect the environment?3. What are your plans to eliminate nuclear weapons? We as Nobel Peace Laureates have a duty to demand answers to these questions and we commit to continue topress political candidates and all world leaders for responses. We encourage citizens, especially youth who willbe most effected by the answer to these questions, to energetically pursue them also. Further, we expect thepress to insist that candidates and leaders articulate their plans to ensure a sustainable and just future.

    7ROME Campidoglio17 - 19 NOVEMBER2006

It took only forty-three seconds, less than a minute, to cause the disappearance ofa city, with its dwellers and centuries-old history. One hundred and fifty thousandpeople literally vanished. That immense devastation was caused by the two atomicbombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945. Even for peacefulpurposes, nuclear energy remains the object of harsh debates, especially in Europe;twenty years after Chernobyl, many countries still pay the price of the reactor number

4 explosion. Yet, in 2004 about 440 nuclear power plants have supplied, in thirtycountries, 16% of the world electric power requirement. Of these plants, 140 arelocated in the United States, 60 in France. By the end of 2004, 26 new nuclear powerplants were under construction, 18 of which in Asia. Atomic energy, its influence onthe force relationships among countries and the world outlook with the use ofalternative energy sources.

Final Declaration abstract:[] The use of a nuclear weapon against a State without nuclear weapons is patentlyimmoral. Use against a State with nuclear weapons is also suicidal. These weaponshave no value against terrorists or criminals. Progress toward a safer future is notthwarted from a lack of practical, threat-reducing policy options. The problem is a lackof political will. As Nobel Peace Laureates we commit to work collectively to achievethe elimination of nuclear weapons, which we believe are unworthy of civilization.[]

"NEW POLICIESFOR THE 21STCENTURYFinal Declaration abstract:The world cannot and must not look at the tragicscene of children, women and people of all agewandering in search of food and lacking anyhealth care. We, Nobel Peace Laureates, meeting in Rome onApril 21 and 22 1999, ask for an immediateresolution of the conflict in the Balkans thoughcompromise, the suspension of military activitiesand the immediate beginning of negotiations.[]

    "POVERTY AND REMISSION

OF THE INTERNATIONAL DEBTOF UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRIESFinal Declaration abstract:The Nobel Peace Laureates pronounced themselves decidedly in favourof the cancellation of debts accumulated by underdeveloped countries.[] The annulment of debts accumulated by underdeveloped countriescould constitute an important step in creating conditions that lead todevelopment and fighting poverty. It is, however, not enough. [] It

is of utmost importance to assure that the resources made available bythe cancellation of international debt, as well as any practical aidallocated to underdeveloped countries, be used exclusively for thedevelopment of those countries and the battle against poverty. []

We, the undersigned Nobel Peace Laureates, express solidarity with our colleague Aung San

Suu Kyi, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1991, imprisoned in her country for 19 years, and who

in recent days has been the victim of yet another terrible injustice by the dictatorship of the

Burmese generals. The new arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi, after an episode which has not yet

been clarified, is based on unfounded accusations and is all the more unacceptable if weconsider her already poor state of health.

We are here today to remind the world of the courage and strength of this woman, who has

ceaselessly fought for the freedom of her people, for democracy in her country and for the

respect of the human rights of her fellow citizens.

We have always been confident in the efforts made by the international community, and

especially the United Nations, for the start-up of a democratic and peaceful process of

    national reconcil iation.

Today, with yet another il legal arrest, we wish to highlight the risk of losing another valuableopportunity for peace in Burma.

For all of these reasons, we, the undersigned Nobel Peace Laureates, appeal to the Heads of

State and of Government, the European institutions and the United Nations to do everything

possible to achieve the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi and of all the other political

prisoners, and to oblige the Burmese regime to start up a process of peaceful reconciliation

in order to restore democracy and the respect of human rights in this country.

During the 3rd World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, held in Rome in

October 2002, participants discussed the possibility of acting as mediators

to avert the imminent war in Iraq.

In just a few days a humanitarian mission was organised that will remainetched in history: the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in

collaboration with the WCCCI (World Centers of Compassion for ChildrenInternational) promoted by Nobel Laureate Betty Williams and other charity

organisations decided to send an aircraft with 15 tons of humanitarian aidto children suffering from leukemia as a result of bombings during the first

Gulf War and staying at the childrens hospital of Baghdad.

It was an historic event, when on 17 December 2002, after 11 years of

embargo, the first plane from the West, a Boeing 747 from the Alitalia fleet, landed at Baghdad airport.

The mission, authorised by the UN Security Council and supported by the

office of the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, enabled Betty Williams andSummit representatives accompanying her to meet the Iraqi Vice Presidentand Foreign Secretary Tareq Aziz in order to start a final round of

negotiations in order to try and avoid the impending conflict.

OF THE EARTHQUAKE IN ABRUZZOIn 2008 the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace

Laureates, in cooperation with Eli Lilly, sent a team of volunteers to

support the population of Abruzzo affected by the earthquake. Two days

after the disaster, two tents for the field hospitals and one hundredcamp beds were consigned by our international organization to the Camp

of San Gregorio in L Aquila. The Permanent Secretariat of the World

Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates also started up a subscription

campaign for the organization of further support for aid and

    reconstruction activity.

In July 2009 the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit

of Nobel Peace Laureates, thanks to the help of Lancia, Eli

Lilly and BNP, supported the activity of the association Arti

e Spettacolo which, through the organisation of cultural

activities, worked to bring an element of normality back to the

lives of inhabitants of towns hit by the tragedy of the

    earthquake.

Through fundraising, in a few days it was possible to build a

semi-permanent structure at the tent city of the Municipalityof San Demetrio (AQ) that was able to serve many of the

towns and villages in the area at the epicentre of the

earthquake, a community of about 10,000 inhabitants.

The Nobel Peace Hall, created as a space for film projections,

proved to be a fundamental structure for reception, meetings

and many other activities useful for the reorganisation of

community life, which had been rocked by the disasters

caused by the earthquake. The inauguration of the hall was a

major international event thanks to the participation of

George Clooney and Bill Murray, who decided to make their

own contribution to the cause not only with their physical

presence but also, thanks in part to 20th Century Fox,

presenting to the children in the tented city a preview of the

    film Fantastic Mr Fox.

The inauguration, furthermore, was held at the same time as

the G8 Summit was taking place in Abruzzo. This

concomitance of events meant that the inauguration of the

Nobel Peace Hall could be attended by the First Ladies of the

heads of state invited to the Summit, giving the event furthervisibility.
