Usage is available throughout the state of Pennsylvania.

Choice B: Challenges & Opportunities for Biosolid Land ApplicationPeter Price, Synagro

The discussion of land application of biosolids/residential septage will always raise eyebrows. If you’re lucky it just might raise a question as well. What is land application? Where do I start? Will I start a new neighborhood fan page on Facebook? It can be a daunting subject for anyone in the wastewater industry if you don’t have anyone to ask. So take the opportunity to speak with someone who has been through the belt press of land application in Pennsylvania. This break out session will get into the nitty gritty of land applying residuals and help determine if its right for you. The presentation will be structured to allow ample time for attendees to not only have their questions answered but are encouraged to share their stories as well. So come on out and join the land application party!

Choice C: Choosing the Right Alternative for the JobDave Gustafson, P.E., University of Minnesota Onsite Sewage Treatment Program

In this session the we will cover the many options that are available for the advanced treatment of wastewater and how to choose the appropriate method for the specific site requirements. The discussion will include descriptions of the different types of advanced treatment and media filters available and how they work and treat the wastewater. What site conditions or other factors will drive the selection of a particular type of advanced treatment.

2:45pm - 4:00pm Educational Breakout SessionsChoice A: Differences Between Control Switches & Float Switches

Mike Smallets, Latchaw Montgomery & Peck, Inc.

This session will focus on the different use applications between pump float switches and control switches in wastewater systems. The presenter will also review mechanical switches and mercury switches, and normally open and normally closed contacts.

Choice B: Case Studies on How NOT to Conduct a PSMA InspectionPanel of PSMA Inspector Certification Trainers

Learn from other inspectors’ mistakes. The panel of inspectors will pick “real life” scenarios to discuss on how the PSMA Standards may have been misapplied during an onsite system inspection and how you can avoid the same mistakes. This session will help you increase your professionalism by fine-tuning your application of the PSMA Standards in the field and in the office.

Choice C: Operation & Management of Conventional SystemsDave Gustafson, P.E., University of Minnesota Onsite Sewage Treatment Program

In this session the we will cover the importance of conducting Operations and Maintenance on a conventional system. The discussion will include descriptions of the treatment train and all the components of a conventional system and why it is important to maintain even the most basic gravity fed system. The session will discuss the proper steps to take when completing an Operations and Maintenance Service Call.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 20178:30am - 9:45am Educational Breakout Sessions

Choice A: Control Panel Best Practices & Troubleshooting (#2)Vince Hannesson, JSE-Rhombus

This session will focus on the variety and best usage practices of different control panel components. It will include a discussion of installation tips and common errors to avoid with new installation as well as how to troubleshoot problems with control panels. Attendees will get hands-on access to various control panel components. This session will be re-run on Monday at 10:45am.

Choice B: Drain Field RenovationJoe Keeton, Arcan Enterprises Inc.

What can be done to maintain or improve the water absorption in a drainfield? A traditional anaerobic septic system has soil absorption area which consists of an area of ground which has been usually tested for a percolation rate, soil type, and location and found suitable for the absorption up to a fixed quantity of water per day. Oxygen in the soil is not tested for and may be the most important component of a soil absorption area. Attendees will learn about how Septic-ScrubTM drainfield flow restorer can be used as a chemical treatment to oxidize the sulfides and release oxygen into the drainfield. This is essentially the same way that letting the system rest does, except much faster. Septic-Scrub can not only be used to try to restore flow to a slowed system, but can be used effectively to help prevent the system from building up sulfides to the point that the water absorption is severely slowed and builds up in the aggregate.

Choice C: Nitrogen Treatment in Alternative SystemsDave Gustafson, P.E., University of Minnesota Onsite Sewage Treatment Program

This session will discuss the importance of understanding the nitrogen cycle as it relates to Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems. The discussion will include what alternative treatments are available to nitrogen reduction and the necessity for on-going operation and maintenance on these systems to ensure that nitrogen levels are met.

10:15am - 11:30am Educational Breakout SessionsChoice A: Buying or Selling a Septic Business

A. Rhodes Wilson, A. Rhodes Wilson & Associates

Do you want to grow your septic business through acquisition or exit gracefully through selling it? This session will help identify prospective buyers or sellers and make a successful approach; apply appropriate valuation factors; understand potential pitfalls of the sale and identify and understand typical sales terms and conditions; structure the deal; and know what to expect at closing and during the transition.

Choice B: What Makes a Good Septic Inspection?Frank Parker, Parker Wastewater Consulting

What make up the properties of a “good” septic inspection? This presentation will cover the process inspectors should go through to deliver a high-quality inspection product to the end user.

Choice C: Operation & Management of PumpsDave Gustafson, P.E., University of Minnesota Onsite Sewage Treatment Program

In this session the we will cover the operation and maintenance of pumps in an Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS). The discussion will include the purpose of having pumps in an OWTS. How the pump is selected and sized for the specific application. And, the proper operation and maintenance that needs to occur on systems with pump components.

1:00pm - 2:15pm Keynote Address: Worksite SafetyDave Glacken, Occupational Safety and Health Administration

This OSHA presentation is an ideal overview for both workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in the workplace. The program provides information regarding workers’ rights and employer responsibilities regarding the important safety topics of confined space entry, trenching/excavation, and competent person identification.

2:45pm - 4:00pm Educational Breakout SessionsChoice A: Why Do Pumps Fail?

Tom Robsock, Orchard Pump

Review the differences between pump applications, discussing various types of construction and design used such as motors, bearings, impellers, and seals. The presentation will explore common sources of pump failure and the reasons behind the failure.

Choice B: Inspector Roundtable: Common Onsite Septic System IssuesPanel of PSMA Inspector Certification Trainers

The panel of PSMA trainers will discuss how inspectors can identify common issues with onsite wastewater systems. Both newly certified and veteran inspectors will benefit by exploring real-life inspection issues with the panelists. Learn how they resolved some of the tough cases…come and share your experiences.

Choice C: Advanced Onlot Wastewater Treatment Tech DevelopmentMatt Kinney, Student-University of Pittsburgh Johnstown; Dr. Shannon Parks, P.E., University of Pittsburgh Johnstown; John Smith, P.E., CES Clean Water LLC

Nitrogen (N) levels in waterways are of increasing concern worldwide due to its consumption of oxygen in water via algal blooms supported by increased N levels, potential negative human health effects such as blue-baby syndrome, and expanding dead zones in water bodies such as The Gulf of Mexico and Chesapeake Bay. Nitrogen typically enters our waterways from sewage treatment plants, on-lot wastewater treatment systems, and fertilizers in stormwater runoffs. While treatment of nitrogen in publicly owned treatment works is becoming standard, nitrogen removal technology in on-lot wastewater treatment systems (aka household septic systems) is in its infancy. While several advanced on-lot wastewater treatment systems have been developed, none have been proven to be cost effective with long-term performance data. The objective of this research project is to review the current landscape of existing and emerging septic system technologies, with a focus on the ability to remove nitrogen. In addition to nitrogen removal performance, capital, operational and maintenance costs will be compared, as well as ease of installation and operation.
