RULES:

The object of the event is to stack up 20 bales of hay (OPEN) or 15 bales (JUNIOR) to the greatest height as quickly as possible. No extra bales of hay will be given during any one event to replace broken bales. Teams will consist of THREE (3) MEMBERS.

The bales of hay shall be picked up and carried (not thrown) from the start line 10 metres to where the stack should be built. One (1) team member must finish seated on top of the highest bale and the stack must stand unaided for a minimum of five (5) seconds - then may be held by members of the team for the stack to be measured.

Teams will have a maximum of three (3) minutes to finish in heats and two (2) minutes in the final. There will be a whistle sounded 30 seconds before full time. Teams will be notified when time is up by two (2) sounds of the whistle at which point they must cease building and sit on the top bale (not all bales have to be used). Where more than one team finishes with stacks of the same height (measured to the highest bale), the fastest will win.

Heats of 2 to 3 teams will be run with the highest and fastest overall progressing to the final.

HIGHEST THREE TEAMS TO GO INTO THE FINAL.

Finalists are also asked to demonstrate knowledge of their local community and current affairs and apart from their potential ambassadorial qualities, contestants are also judged on their involvement in and experience of rural affairs.

HINTS ON EXHIBITION COOKING

♦ It is important that you read the schedule carefully. Check closing time for entries♦ Read your recipe – it could mean the difference between success or failure♦ Always weigh your ingredients♦ Never turn your cake onto cake cooler. The marks are regarded as a decoration.

Place on board covered with tea towels♦ Do not use packet cake - unless stated♦ Use castor sugar for finer cakes♦ Most important to use fresh ingredients, especially shortening♦ Do not use cornflour in sponge, unless it is in the schedule♦ Do not use ring tin unless stated♦ Do not put cakes in plastic containers or bags before judging as this can draw

moisture – use cellophane for best results♦ Biscuits and pikelets should be dainty♦ Ice cake on top only, no frosting unless otherwise stated♦ Weigh sponge mixture for even heights♦ Do not over-flavour especially soda♦ Do not trim a cake♦ You have taken care with your cake, so take care with your presentation

RicH fRuit cake

class 2531 of cooking (section 25)nsW competition (compulsoRY Recipe)

Sponsored by THE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETIES COUNCIL OF NSWand Berry Show Society Inc. Prizes 1st $20, 2nd $10

The Winner must bake a second Rich Fruit Cake in order to compete in a semi-final to be conducted by each of the fourteen groups of the Agricultural Societies Council of NSW. The fourteen winners at group level will each receive a cash prize of $15, and are required to bake another Rich Fruit Cake for the final judging at the Royal Easter Show, where the winner will receive a cash prize of $50.

The following recipe is compulsory for all entrants

RicH fRuit cakeHere’s what you need: 250g (8oz) sultanas 250g (8oz) chopped raisins 250g (8oz) currants 125g (4oz) chopped mixed peel 90g (3oz) chopped red glace cherries 90g (3oz) chopped blanched almonds 1/3 cup sherry or brandy 250g (8oz) plain flour 60g (2oz) self raising flour 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 250g (8oz) butter 250g (8oz) soft brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon lemon essence or finely grated lemon rind 1/2 teaspoon almond essence 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence 4 large eggs

Here’s what you do:Mix together the fruits and nuts and sprinkle with the sherry or brandy. Cover and leave for at least one (1) hour, but preferably overnight. Sift together the flours and spices. Cream together the butter and sugar with the essences. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then alternately add the fruit and flour mixtures. Mix thoroughly. The mixture should be stiff enough to support a wooden spoon. Place the mixture into a prepared tin no larger than 20cm (8 inches) and bake in a slow oven for approximately 3-4 hours. Allow the cake to cool in the tin.

NOTE:To ensure uniformity and depending upon the size it is suggested the raisins be snipped into 2 or 3 pieces, cherries into 4 to 6 pieces and almonds crosswise into 3 or 4 pieces.

BERRY SHOW TREASURE - 2015 - KEITH MILLERKeith was born in 1923 in Nowra, the third of five boys to William and Winnie Miller, and was raised on the family farm, Broughton Mill, in Wharf Road, Berry. He attended both Berry and Far Meadow Public Schools, then Nowra High. Keith didn’t enjoy school, so when he was offered work as a drover for a local livestock dealer, he was happy to combine work with school. In 1937 at the age of 14, Keith left school to work on his grandparents’ dairy in Bundewallah. Two years later he joined the 7th Light Horse Brigade. In November, 1945, he was discharged from the Army and returned home to work on the family farm.

In 1951 Keith married Nancy Morison and they lived with Keith’s family while he renovated the old house on the farm. They eventually moved into this house, where they lived for the reminder of their respective lives, raising four children.

Agricultural Shows and Friesian Cattle were Keith’s passion. In 1946 Keith joined the Committee of the Berry A. & H. Society, remaining a member for 56 years. He was made a life member in 1976 and was President during 1977 and 1978.

As Show days drew near, Keith would, after milking, do a drive through the Showground just to check everything was in order. His old Jeep was as well known to the Berry community as Keith himself.

Keith loved the Berry Show and he would be so pleased to see that it is still carrying on the tradition of being a very successful Country Show.
