SEPTEMBER 27, 2015 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

St. Vincent Martyr Youth Ministry

This weekend marks the beginning of Youth Ministry at St. Vincent Martyr. We refer to Youth Ministry as a “Process” rather than a “Program.” From the U.S. Bishops’ document, Renewing the Vision, Youth Ministry is defined as an ongoing faith formation through which adolescents and their families live out their baptismal call within the life of the parish. Three goals have been established to help guide us in this approach.

1. To empower our young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today

2. To draw our young people to responsible participation in the life, mission and work of the Catholic Church

through our parish community

3. To foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person within our Catholic Christian

Community of St. Vincent Martyr Parish

Our goal for teens involved in Youth Ministry is for them to experience the 8 components of our process: Evangelization, Community Life, Leadership Development, Catechesis, Prayer and Worship, Justice and Service, Pastoral Care, and Advocacy. By experiencing these 8 components each of our young people has the opportunity to experience a personal encounter with Jesus Christ that focuses on listening for the specific vocation God is calling him or her to live. In our program the parish itself is the structure and the people are the witnessing faith-sharers. So, there is a curriculum and a structure; it is just not expressed or taught in a traditional way. This year we begin with something new. Our opening today involves teens who will actively participate in our parent/teen liturgy with their continual participation in other parish liturgies throughout the year. Their involvement will include teen musicians, Eucharistic Ministers, lectors, altar servers, ushers, and a witness reflection. I am so grateful to all who have stepped forward to take an active role, most especially to Fr. George and Jan Figenshu for their guidance, assistance and leadership. I am constantly amazed and encouraged by the teens in Youth Ministry. Their level of faith and their willingness and enthusiasm to share their own personal faith continues to convince me that this “Process” works. Feel free to contact me if you would like to get involved, as ministering to our teens truly keeps my faith alive!

SAINT VINCENT MARTYR PASTORAL COUNCIL

Our newly formed Pastoral Council held an organizational meeting on the last Monday of August to prepare for its work for the coming year. It's clear that this consultative body of committed parishioners will be using their varied backgrounds, perspectives, skills and talents to help our parish be the very best version of ourself. They are dedicated to their ministry which is to envision, plan, and oversee the implementation of policies and activities that promote sharing the love of Jesus Christ in our prayer, ministry, education and service.

As we have shared before, the Council has as its purpose to: a. Serve as a consultative body to the Pastor b. Prayerfully discern the needs of the parish community c. Establish clear, concise goals and objectives based on the Envision Parish Plan and the emerging needs of the parish community. d. Serve as a vehicle for constructive dialogue with the parish community. e. Identify and call forth the gifts and talents of the members of the parish community. f. Coordinate, encourage and promote parish ministries and activities to be faithful to the call to evangelize. g. Collaborate with the Parish Pastoral Staff and Parish Finance Council in serving the needs of the parish. h. Work to support and implement diocesan policies and directives and to explore Catholic trends. i. Create committees as may be needed to fulfill these purposes. Judging from the hopes and dreams for the council that our members shared at last month’s meeting and from their receptivity to Father George’s vision of how the council can help him and our parish it is clear that good things are on the horizon. Council members welcome and encourage suggestions from parishioners. Members may be contacted by email. The addresses are as follows: Marcela Bledt – [email protected] MaryBeth Bogdanski – [email protected] Gene Cracovia – [email protected] Patty Della Torre - [email protected] Barbara Doyle – [email protected] Jan Figenshu - [email protected] Kevin Flanagan – [email protected] Jean Fuchs – [email protected] Lenore Luckey – [email protected] Carol McCarthy – [email protected] Michael Newman – [email protected] Joanne Novack – [email protected] Jerry Schreck – [email protected] Stan Wisnewski – [email protected] Addresses may also be found on the parish website. Council meetings will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Library Media Center on the last Monday of each month. All meetings are open to parishioners, and our members are looking forward to seeing you there. Agenda will be published each month.

2015 Bishop's Annual Appeal Serving Christ Amount Us

It is important that when you give to any charitable organization, you are confident that the funds are used wisely. Be assured that your gift to the Bishop's Annual Appeal supports four causes: our Catholic Charities agencies, seminarian education, our inner-city area elementary schools and our priests' retirement residence. Funds are used for no other purpose. Note, also, that all funds raised for the Paterson Diocese stay in the Paterson Diocese. Please make a pledge to the Bishop's Annual Appeal today.

FEAST OF SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI (Blessing of Animals)

In honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, we will celebrate the Blessing of Animals (English/Spanish) on Sunday, October 4 at 3:00 p.m. on the back porch of the church. Saint Francis is loved by Catholics and non-Catholics alike. He patterned his extremely simple lifestyle after the life of Jesus. His beautiful prayers and songs provide a map for the way we should live our own lives while giving us a glimpse of heaven. His 'Canticle of Creation," gives praise to God for all of God's creatures, "great and small."

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process

offered to adults who wish to discern their call to full membership in the Catholic Church. Saint Vincent Martyr will host 5 Inquiry Sessions (September 30, October 7,

October 14 October 21, October 28) to help you discern if this is right for you. RCIA is for those: who have never been baptized who have been baptized in another faith tradition who have been baptized Catholic but have not received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist.

Come and See if God is calling you to become Catholic.

FALL SCRIPTURE SERIES: THE GOSPEL OF LUKE

Our Fall study challenges us to submerge ourselves in the richness of the Word of God. It is an opportunity to look at the Old and New Testament verses and learn more about the Faith and Times of Jesus. More than just a Bible study, it’s biblical catechesis. This course will be a nice preparation for our Sunday Readings during the Cycle C Year, the Gospel of Luke. If you have never participated in a Bible Study before, take the plunge! For our veterans, this will be our time to prepare for the Year of Mercy! Each class is offered three times each week: Sunday at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. and Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. We will begin the week of October 4th. Please bring YOUR BIBLE! To register, contact Jan at [email protected] 973-377-4000 ext 253.

CHRISTIANS OF THE HOLY LAND Our parish will once again be visited by the Christians of the Holy Land the weekend of October 3/4. This group of Bethlehemites travels throughout the U.S. and bring the message of those Christians who live in the holy city. Besides sharing their story and plight with us, they also will bring some beautiful olive wood religious articles for you to check out and possibly purchase. The group is lead by Rami M. Qumsieh, KHS who visited us once before. The merchandise sale will take place in the school gym after all the Masses that weekend.

SUNDAY READINGS TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

But Moses explained that prophets are chosen by God, not the people. Second Reading: James 5:1-6 James speaks out strongly against people who become rich by cheating their workers. He claims the wealth they have dishonestly collected will be a testimony against them on judgment day. Gospel: Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48 Jesus explains to his disciples that it is acceptable for a person who is not part of their group to speak in his name, but he does warn them that anyone who tries to lead his followers astray will be severely punished. Jesus also discusses personal failing and the importance of taking whatever steps are necessary to avoid them.

The Grief Recovery Method® Support Program

Grieving is the most normal and natural response to a loss, but it is the most misunderstood experience. Society wants us to deal with loss as an intellectual response. That is why grief can have a lasting impact on a person’s happiness. Grief is an emotional response to a loss. After your loss, you may have wished that some things had been different, better or more. There were hopes, dreams and expectations that now will never come to pass. The intention of the Grief Recovery Method® Support Program will help you discover what was emotionally left incomplete. If you are willing to make a commitment of time and some work, you will recover and move beyond your grief. Dangler Funeral Home, Inc. offers this program free of charge. To find out more about this program, please join me: Betty Dangler, Certified Grief Recovery Specialist® When: Thursday, October 8, 2015 Time: 7:30 PM Where: Burroughs, Kohr, Dangler Funeral Home 106 Main St. Madison, NJ 07940

SERVICE

ANNUAL HAITI FOOD DRIVE

The annual food drive for the Missionaries of the Poor in Cap-Haitien, Haiti has begun. This weekend and next (October 3/4) are the collection weekends for those wishing to contribute. As in past years there will be a table outside church after Mass with the food items that are being requested.

A Family Perspective

The words in today's Gospel, "Whoever gives a cup of water in the name of Christ will not lose their reward" hits home. As parents we gain our "reward" when be bring water to a frightened child in the middle of the night, or Kool Aid to parched five-year olds, or hold ice chips to the fevered lips of a spouse. It is that simple and that sacred. In our homes we give until it hurts "in the name of Christ.

Segunda Lectura: Sant. 5, 1-6

Lloren y laméntense, ustedes, los ricos,

por las desgracias que les esperan. Sus

riquezas se han corrompido; la polilla

se ha comido sus vestidos;

campos está clamando contra ustedes;

Y recuerda a aquellos

que den un vaso de agua a los que siguen el Mesías

que no quedaran sin recompensa. Consejos de una

enorme actualidad que a todos nos afectan.”
