SEPTEMBER 6, 2015 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

From Father George . . . . . It may have been the longest summer possible, with Memorial Day being so early and Labor Day so late but the common consensus seems to be that it sure flew by quickly. I know it certainly did for me - and what a flight it was! Allow me to share some of the highlights. The summer began with saying goodbye to a good friend and brother priest, Fr. Matthew, and saying hello to my two new housemates, Fr. Darwin and Deacon Martin. If you ever wondered if a Brooklyn born pastor, a Columbian born associate and a Polish born Deacon could live and work together in peace and good will, the answer is YES! It does also make for a interesting dinner table. Having settled in our new men, I headed out to give a week long retreat to 23 Sisters of Charity - the experience was heavenly. Not only did I have an opportunity to spend an entire 7 days talking about one of my favorite topics - Pope Francis and the joy of the Gospel - but I got to do it with some incredibly holy women who inspired me more than I inspired them. The icing on the cake was that the retreat house was in Harvey Cedars, Long Beach Island. It doesn't get much better! But in fact, it did! Later in the summer I had the opportunity to put into action some of the things I talked about on the retreat by heading down to Appalachia with our Youth Ministry to serve the people of Preston County, West Virginia. Our Holy Father continually stresses the importance of being with and for our brothers and sisters in their need. I am grateful to Fred Mercadante and Anne Marie Gisoldi for making it possible for us to do exactly that - and I am grateful to you, the people of our parish, for supporting that effort. I did of course get some vacation time this summer too - and I am happy to report that while I was away Fr. Darwin handled everything masterfully - and that there were no hurricanes, earthquakes, middle of the night fire alarms or power outages! For part of my vacation I ventured into Mormon territory, visiting southwestern Utah where I enjoyed some serious hiking at Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. It was the first time I traveled anywhere just by myself. I was a bit apprehensive about how that would be, wondering if I would enjoy my own company - it worked out fine. But I even more so enjoyed the company of my good friend, Bishop Rodimer on our now annual trip to the Glimmerglass Opera Festival in Cooperstown, N Y (yes, baseball and baritones do go together!), where we were joined for a few days by my Dad and Step-Mom. I also enjoyed a few days in the Berkshires with my brother and sister and their spouses where we spent some time honoring the memory of my sister, Jeanine, by celebrating our bond as siblings. And in between it all I had the opportunity to baptize the twin grandchildren of my long time friends, having become an honorary grand uncle! Did I have a good summer - ABSOLUTELY - and what made it so good was the time and space to appreciate how truly blessed I am and to rejoice in the gift of family and of friends, of faith and of ministry, of creation and of nature, of life and of love. Energized by gratitude I welcome what lies ahead on the journey we share together in the Lord!

DAILY READINGS TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Isaiah 35:4-7a Isaiah tells the people to be strong and unafraid. God will save his people, and the blind will see, the deaf will hear, and the lame will walk. Streams will come forth in the desert, the sandy ground will become springs of water. Second Reading: James 2:1-5 James encourages the people to never show favoritism. He discusses an usher who escorted a rich man to the best seat, while ignoring a poor man. God chose poor people to be rich in faith, so we should never judge people by their riches. Gospel: Mark 7:31-37 Some people brought a deaf man who could not speak to Jesus and begged him to lay his hand on the man. Jesus opened the man’s ears and cured his speech impediment. He ordered the people not to tell anyone, but they were too amazed to keep this to themselves.

Domingo XXIII del Tiempo

Ordinario

No teman.

Jesucristo glorificado, no tengan favoritismos.
