2013-2014 dates postedSummer Office HoursOur wonderful office staff will be working over the summer, in case you need to stop by or call. Office hours are M-F, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., excluding state and federal holidays.

Island School Food Booth at Farm Bureau FairIsland School parent, Pepe Trask, is organizing a food booth for Island School at this year’s Farm Bureau Fair. The proposed menu is: BBQ chicken sticks, chips & salsa plate, spaghetti with meat, marinara or vegetarian sauce, tofu salad, green salad w/ sweet peppers, black olives and sesame dressing. This will be a fund raising effort in support of a variety of student programs including but not limited to: athletics, robotics, chorus, theater, video production, visual arts, etc. Volunteers will be needed to prepare food and work the booth on August 22-25, at Vidinha Stadium. Summer MailingsWatch for three (or four) mailing from us over the summer. The first deals with forms needing completion: updated names and addresses, medical forms, etc. There is a deadline for getting these in and then they are filed. The second concentrates on the Student/Parent Handbook -- rules by which we live and breathe, governing dress and behavior, among the topics. Students and parents are asked to sign a form indicating that they have read, understood, and agree to follow the rules of the school. The third focuses on activities connected to

the opening of school, including bus and lunch sign-ups, registration for students in grades 6-12, assessments for the elementary children, and orientation meetings for parents.If deemed important, a fourth mailing will be sent. These will be sent via post or email, depending on the content.

Book Buyback Sell your books at our online bookstore, MBS Direct. Go to http://bookstore.mbsdirect.net/ischool.htm. Print your quote, then drop it off along with your books to Melissa in the Office. Books will be accepted through tomorrow, June 7, from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Use the MBS Direct Bookstore account you set up when you purchased your books. Marine Ecology Class FilledThis popular summer class is fully booked.We hope to do it again next year.

Senior Send-Off Today-12:30HS students will celebrate the end of finals and the members of our senior class with a BBQ & water fun at the Senior Gazebo. On the menu will be beef & veggie burgers, chips, fruit, cake & cookies. 12:30-2:00 p.m.

GEOLOGY – Ms. Mink’s class spent five days exploring Hawai‘i Island, from east to west and from sea level to the top of Mauna Kea. They went into the pitch black of an old lava tube and out onto a field of crunchy, broken up new lava; they saw a huge red plume of fumes rising into the night sky from Halemaumau crater, the parkland in Hilo where tsunamis twice wiped out blocks of people’s homes and businesses, and the scarp where several square miles of the island fell into the sea, creating a wave that flooded completely over Lanai.They roasted at South Point, froze at 14,000 feet, and traveled almost 800 miles. Best of all, Ms. Mink and Mr. Massaro would like to congratulate and thank seniors

Austin Taylor and Damian Lynch, and juniors Kiana Baptiste, Austin Cook, Keana Green, Tyler Schump, Kalena Wong and Kellan Wortmann for their excellent behavior and camaraderie throughout the trip.

NA PUA KEIKI – Students and their families are invited to the Fairytale Ball tonight in the Weinberg “Ballroom” to honor those moving up to kindergarten. This is a sleepover and begins this evening at 5:30 p.m. There will be ballroom dancing, sword, shield, magic wand and crown decorating. Parents are bringing a

potluck dinner and breakfast. Those who wish to attend will head out in the morning to Hanapepe Salt Pond for the Beach Blast-Off.

MORNING CIRCLE – Elementary Student Council members received certificates of accomplishment this morning. Fifth graders left Morning Circle as all lower grades Moved Up to their next grade for a taste of what’s in store next year.

The Headmaster’s Senior Brunch last Saturday, at Gaylord’s, was well attanded and featured the seniors performing, once again, their May Day dance.

2nd graders performed their Rainforest play yesterday and enjoyed tropical fruit salad at their Rainforest Festival.

SIXTH GRADE – Girls in grade 6 had a great field trip to Hanchett Ranch earlier this month. They learned horsemanship, riding skills, and ancient Hawaiian crafts, making hau bracelets and bamboo whistles. At the end of the day, the girls rode their horses in barrel races for an authentic rodeo experience.

KIF TRACK – This year, for the first time, we had five girls qualify for the

Hawai‘i High School State Track and Field Champi-onships, held May 10

and May 11 at Mililani High School. Pictured from left to right are are coach Corey Dobashi, Allison Culliney ‘15, long jump and triple jump, Joy Claypoole ‘13, 3000 meter run and 4 x 400 relay, Chan Hsu ‘14, 1500 meter run and 4 x 400 relay, coach Eric Wortmann, Jade Murphy ‘16, 4 x 400 realay, Madison Moore ‘15, 4 x 400 relay and Coach Milo Spindt.

FACULTY ACHIEVEMENT – Mary Castelanelli placed 4th in the Ironman Triathlon on Hawai‘i Island. Mariko Strickland is in Colorado, competing in SUP down river event at the GoPro Mountain Games. Adie Siebring will spend the month of July in Cambodia, volunteering at the Future Light Orphanage, where she

will help develop curriculum for their school and teach English.

SPORTS BANQUET – Friday night’s Sport’s Banquet was attended by 350+ Voyager athletes and their families, as well as their coaches. Joy Claypoole and Marcus Punua (pictured above) received the Booster Club’s Blue & Gold Award, given to a male and female Voyager athlete who best demonstrates the Voyager spirit. Five students played four varsity sports this year: Michael Miller ‘15, Madison Moore ‘15, Eric Potter ‘16, Kellan Wortmann ‘14, and Joy Claypoole ‘13. All received letter jackets (except Joy, who already earned one).

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT – Congratulations to Pierce Murphy ‘12, who won the men’s division at

last Saturday’s Ha‘ena to Hanalei 8 mile run (for the 3rd time). Also to Eric Potter ‘16, who came in 3rd in his divistion in the 5K run. 3rd grader Spencer Summerhays came in 4th in the 1 mile kids’ run.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION –Ms. Mariko’s students in middle and elementary showed significant improvement in their fitness skills. They were tested at the beginning and end of the year in the following: one mile run, curl-ups, trunk lift, push-ups, back-saver sit and reach and body fat percentage.

FIFTH GRADE – Ms. Wortmann took her class on an overnight to Hanchett Ranch in Moloa‘a. They had a fabulous time, despite (or because of) the rain. Some of them made Lomi Lomi massage sticks from guava branches. They learned how to open combination locks for next year, had mud fights and played like crazy.

ACTING OPPORTUNITY: Women In Theatre (WIT) is rounding up people for Kaua‘i Summer Shorts - the ten minute play festival that hits the stage August 9 & 10.
