Last week we started the Book of Numbers and spent some time looking atwhat it means to travel through the Wilderness or Desert. When Israel enteredEgypt in the time of Joseph, they were 70 souls. Then they were counted just asthey left Egypt and was about 600,000 men. The time after that, they werecounted in Exo 30, with the giving of half a shekel when the Tabernacle wasconstructed. Then each Tribe was numbered in last weeks Portion where theywere set up as the Armies of YHVH, as they embarked on their journey throughthe Wilderness. The name of this Torah portion is naso that means to take

or elevate and that is to take a census, counting the Levites, revealing thepeople behind the scenes who took care of the logistics of the Tabernacle, asthey travelled through the Wilderness. So we are still counting, but in this TorahPortion, we will take a more detail look at Levi, the Tribe that keeps the Campor Headquarters in place, while the other 12 Tribes do battle in theWilderness.

    Counting the Levites

When we looked at the two lists, comparing Exo 30 with Numbers 1,

we saw Levi being excluded as one ofthe twelve Tribes, indicating that theywere not included as part of theArmies of YHVH. Levi was numberedto form part of another purposealtogether; they were responsible for taking care of the Tabernacle and for thespiritual well-being of the troops and the rest of Israel. They had a crucialfunction because if they did not exist or if there were issues within this Tribe, thePresence of YHVH would not be in their midst and the people would notfunction on the level they were supposed to operate, worshipping YHVH. Thismade the existence and the role of the Levites of uttermost importance.

In this section, we will study their function as Spiritual Leaders and how thisfunction exist in Assemblies today so that they can spiritually healthy, that willenable them to do battle as they travel through the Wilderness of this life.

Num 4:1 Then YHVH spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 2 Take acensus of the sons of Kohath from among the children of Levi, by their

families, by their fathers house,3from thirty years old and above, evento fifty years old, all who enter the service to do the work in theTabernacle of meeting.

Take a census is the Hebrew phrase again, nasah rosh or lift up yourheads, this is the same phrase we looked at in the previous Torah Portion, butthis time, it applies to the three sons of Levi; Kohath, Gerson and Merari.

Gerson]vsrgis the first son of Levi we will look at and his name meansexile or a stranger here. Gersons job was to carry all the curtains thatcovered the Outer Court, the Holy Place and Holy of Holies. Their number was

2630. Gerson comes from the root word garash that means to drive out, toexpel and to put away. This word is first found in Scripture in Gen 3:24 whereman or Adam was driven out of the Garden of Eden and Cherubims andFlaming Sword kept and guarded the way to the Tree of Life.

Spiritual Application: The Curtains guarded the way towhat was on the inside of the Holy of Holies, the Holy placeand the Inner Court, just like the Cheribums and FlamingSword guarded the Tree of Life, the rest of the Garden andthe entrance to the Garden. The covering aspect of thecurtains is similar to the covering of the Shield that wasrevealed when YHVH cut a Covenant with Abraham [Gen15], where He said; I am your Shield and your exceedinglygreat Reward. The Coverings of the curtains, protected andformed the place that contained the Presence of YHVH, Whois our exceedingly great Reward. You will find the Rewardinside the Covering, Who is the Flaming Sword as well, theOne Who is the Shield, namely Yshua the Messiah.

Personal Application : The meaning of Gerson is stranger here and thesheets they carried represents our bodies or the flesh, that is only temporary, and covers our Nashamah or spiritual soul. Our temporal bodies will fadeaway over time, making us only strangers passing through. When someone

looks at you, they only see your coverings, that is your garment, that coversyour skin, that covers your body, that house your spirit and soul. Your bodyseparates your inward manfrom the outside world, and people will onlylearn to know you through your coverings, your words and deeds. Ourphysical bodies are fragile, will grow old and will be run down so we shouldnot only invest in the body that is temporary, but rather invest in what ishoused on the inside, the part of you that is eternal and is only really knownby YHVH. Investing in your body or flesh alone, will not pay dividends.Gerson represents your Body or Flesh, Actions & WorksHoly living relationship with people.

Gematria: Gersons numberwas 2630 and consists of the numbers 26 and30 or 3 that means Covenant. The number 26 represents the name of YHVHthat adds up to 26 as well. It also accounts for a cube that has 26 attributes,

counting all the sides, corners and surfaces. The Holy of Holies is acube that housed the Presence of YHVH. The New Jerusalem willbe a cube where YHVH will dwell with His people forever. Thecovering will be removed, just like the curtain of the Holy ofHolies has torn, that allowed access into the Presence of theFather. In the same way, will our fleshly covering (body) beremoved, that will allow us access to the direct presence of theFather, where we can exist in His Holy Presence because we arein Covenant with Him.

Merari yrrmis the next son of Levi and his name means bitter. TheMerarites job was to carry all the beams and pillars with silver sockets. Theirnumber was 6200. Merari comes from the root word marar that means to

make bitter, to provoke and grieved. So when YHVH was provoked anger or iswe grieve His Spirit, then we make YHVH bitter or marar, that frequentlyresults in a bitter experience. This word is first found in Scripture in Gen 49:23within the blessing that was spoken over Joseph by his father Jacob, saying; The archers have sorely grieved him and hated him and shot him. The Archersis the Hebrew baalchets. Ba-al means master or to be married to andarcher means, wounded. It was the ones he was in covenant with thatwoundedhim, that grieved him and made him bitter.

QWho was wounded by the ones he was in Covenant with?

Prophetic Appl ication: The Merarites job was to carry all the

pillars and silver sockets. These were the heaviest parts ofthe Tabernacle to carry and are the areas of the Tabernaclethat touched the earth, where the spiritual realm touched thephysical realm. The function of the pillars was to lift up andhold up the curtains. These parts of the Tabernaclerepresents the pole or stake Yshua hadto carry for the sakeof the people He was in Covenant with, where He was liftedup, and everyone who looked at Him and believed in Him,would receive healing and salvation. Yshua was woundedand shot by the people He was in Covenant with, eventhough He was married to them. His death grieved the Father

deeply, but is the pinnacle event that demonstrated His lovefor His people.

Personal Application : Merari represents the bitterness of life, all thetroubles you face and experience living inthis imperfect world. We all have troubles, and we all must carry the heavy loadwhenever we face difficulty in life. Thepillars represent the structure that upholdsthe curtains and makes up the dwellingplace for YHVHas well as His

Priesthood. These posts represent thestructure you need in your life that willuphold you when thigs gets tough.

We find mention of these pillars in Exo 17, where Mosess arms were held upduring the battle against Amalek. The word used for support is the wordamunah, that means pillar, support and faith. The word amunah comesfrom the word aman that means Truth, that forms the basis for amunah orfaith. Knowing His Word allows releases faith in your life that gives yousomething to lean on in times of testing, that we need to overcome whenmararior the bitterness of life presents itself. Merari represents your Mindand your Soul, Word, Truth & FaithRelationship with Yshua.

Gematria: Marais number was 6200 that consists of the numbers 6 and 200.The number 6 represents man and the number 200 or 2 representsRestoration of Relationships. Faith and Truth is the means to restore yourrelationship back with the Father. Faith is based on Truth that is the Word orTorah, that represents the Messiah as well. This means that your relationshipwith the Word (Yshua) will determine your relationship with the Father.

Kohaththq, the next son of Levi, that means to call out, assembly, and toally oneself,or to become someone who supportsa cause. Their job was to carry and take care ofand the setting up of the Holy place and Holy ofHolies that housed all the furnishings; the Ark, theMenorah, Altar of incense, Table of Showbreadand all its utensils. Their number was 2750.

Personal Application : These are the believers who supports the causeand imply that the House of YHVH is not a club for the use of spiritualentertainment. The House of YHVH or Assembly is a place where youcontribute your efforts to support the cause of establishing YHVHs Kingdom

here on earth. There are very strict requirements carrying and setting up thispart or the Tabernacle and teaches us that our intimate relationship with thefather requires strict guidelines and dedication, and great care needs to betaken to maintain this relationship. Koath represents your SpiritPersonalRelationship with the Father.

Spiritual Application: This son of Levi represents our spiritual internalparts that furnishes the Tabernacle, within the Body of Messiah. Everyaspect of every piece of furniture and every utensil represents one of theareas of the Body that is required to make it function so that it can manifestthe fullness and Presence of YHVH in the midst of the Assembly. The Body

of Messiah cannot be represented in only one person having it all, butwillonly manifest through collaboration and unity of all the bodyparts within theAssembly or Fellowship.

Gematria: Koathsnumber was 2750 that consists of the numbers 2, 7 and50. The number 2 means Restoration of Relationships, 7 means Promises ofYHVH and 50 or 5 means Grace. All the furnishingsinside the Tabernacle exists to complete the House ofYHVH in order to fulfil the Promises He made with man, because of His Grace. The Promises of YHVH will notcome to pass without the House or Body of Messiah andrequires that there needs to be unity within the Assemblyso that His people can extend Grace to the world.

    Carrying the Tabernacle

Num 4:17-19 Then YHVH spoke to Moses andAaron, saying:18 Do not cut off the tribe of thefamilies of the Kohathites from among theLevites; 19 but do this in regard to them, that

they may live and not die when they approachthe most holy things: Aaron and his sons shallgo in and appoint each of them to his serviceand his burden.

Service is the Hebrew word avodah hdbiand is translated as, work, bondage, service. It comes from the root word avad dbithat means, work, servant, service and worshippers. All three these groups of Levites had towork and carry something that collectively made up the Tabernacle of YHVH in

their midst. We read in Matt 11 where Yshua describes work or service untoHim, He describes it as an easy Yoke that is carried, and a Burden that is lightand manageable.

Mat 11:28-30 Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for

I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.30For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

Q - What is the work that YHVH wants you to do, what does it mean to carry ayoke and a burden?

It is our jobs to discover the yoke and then to carry the yoke, walking in the

purpose He placed upon your life, one step at a time. We will now look atdifferent aspects of the yoke and how it is relevant to us as Believers labouringfor our Messiah.

Helping New Believers: The yoke is not the heavinessof the Law like people tend to think, but it is a yoke ofpurpose, and when you carry it, you will find rest. Whennew people come in, they should not be burdened withall the dos and donts, putting an overwhelming burdenupon them. They first, have to settle in, find rest for theirsouls, so that restoration and healing can take place

before they are used in the Body. The next phase after their full recovery is totake up His Yoke, finding out what His purpose is in their life. His burden is easyand His yoke is light, it will come naturally, and they will want to carry this yoke.If you experience His yoke it as too heavy, you might have taken on a yoke thatis not yours, or you could have taken on a yoke that is overloaded with manmade traditions.

Learning their Purpose: Yshua was a Carpenter, and one of His jobs wasprobably to make yokes. He is not only the One makingthe yoke for the ox, but He is also the Creator Who madethe ox as well and understands the requirements to make

a yoke that suits the animal and fits the purpose. TheYoke Yshua made you, is comfortable, sits well and has apurpose that naturally suits you.

You cannot ask for a better fit. You are created for a purpose, and that purposeis the Yoke you carry so that you to can fulfil your destiny here on earth, inrelation to carrying the Tabernackle. The Yoke is made for two to carry, you onthe one side and Yshua on the other, together carrying and pulling the load, helping you every step of the way. This is the second reason for carrying theYoke; to learn from Yshua and to know Him. This means that His Yoke not onlyconnects you to your destiny but also connects you to Him. You do not have toworry about how you will fit into the bigger picture, only take His Yoke upon yourshoulders, take one step at a time and keep on walking.

Warning to the Assembly: The phrase in Matt 11, you will find rest for yoursouls, is an actual passage Yshua quoted from the ProphetJerimiah that relates to the end times.

Jer 6:16-19 Thus says YHVH: Stand in the (ancient) ways andsee, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walkin it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said,

We will not walk in it.17

Also, I set watchmen over you, saying,Listen to the sound of the trumpet! But they said, We will notlisten.18 Therefore hear, you nations, And know, Ocongregation, what is among them. 19Hear, O earth! Behold, Iwill certainly bring calamity on this peopleThe fruit of theirthoughts, Because they have not heeded My words Nor My

    Torah, but rejected it.

Yshua connect this Yoke to the ancient ways, to the old paths that areconfirmed in v 19 to be His Torah and His Word. This is not a new Way or newrevelationthat leads to His rest, it is walking in His Torah, travelling on andfollowing the old path that leads to the place of rest, which is the Promised

Land. Verse 16 states that His people refused to walk in it, not heading to thewarnings of the watchman. Because of their stubbornness, He will bringcalamity upon the believers like this, upon His people who have access to HisWord but refuse to follow His Torah or ancient path. If they continue in theirnew corrupt ways then they will not enter into His Rest.

    Carrying the Yoke

There are four words for Yoke in the Torah; mote, minor, oland tsemed. We are going to look at each one of these Yokesand see how they apply to our lives.

Moteuvmis the first word that means bar or pole thatrepresents the yoke. When you change the tet toa tav (similar in sound making a homophone),

makes the word muth tvmthat means death. This Yoke represents the Yoke, pole or stake(cross) Yshua carried on the day when He gaveHimself to die for the sins of the world, beingobedient unto death.

  • 7/26/2019 Parashah 35 Nasso.pdf

    7/11

    7

Personal Application: This is the Yoke you carry, is similar to the Yoke Yshuacarried as found in the Berit Chadasha (NT), where it says you need to take upyour stake (cross) and follow Him. This means to follow Him even unto death. This Yoke represents your commitment, the first step you take in following Him,where you die to yourself first, before you put on His Yoke, walking in yourdestiny. Without this Yoke of commitment, you will never be able to fullybecome like Him. Yoke of Dedication & Commitment.

Minorrvnmthat means, beam or yoke. It comes from the root word nerrvnthat means lamp, and to break up the soil.Ifyou add the letter Heyh, you get the wordMenorahhrvnm. The fascinating thing aboutthis is that the Menorahs light is linked to thecarrying of a Yoke that results in the breaking up

of the soil. This relates to the Parable of theSower in Matt 13, where the seed of the Word is sown in different types of soil;the best soil is the good ground that was tilled, ready and receptive to receivethe seed and bear fruit, thirtyfold, sixtyfold and some a hundredfold.

Matt 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see yourgood works (mitzvots) and glorify your Father in heaven.

Spiritual Application: This yoke represents mitzvotsor good works that you carry in your life. It is the Yokethat shines, so that people can see it and glorify theFather. This Yoke is related to the Menorah that

represents the Festivals and all the visible symbolsofyour faith that are part of His ancient Path. When youdo these things, people around you can see it. Somemay ask why you carry this burden, thinking it is doneaway with when Yshua came. Then you have anopportunity to present the truth and a right to speak into their lives. His light isdesigned to shine in this dark world, so that people looking for the Truth, cancome to the light you shine by carrying His Yoke. Yoke of Mitzvots or GoodWorks.

Ol limeans uponand is found in Gen 27:40 where Isaac blessed Esausaying that he will serve Jacob, but there comes a time when hewill break his yokefrom his neck. The word ol is also found in

the word bel-e-yal,liylbthat means, without a yoke. Deut13:13 reveals the Sons of Belial who was bad because theybrought in the worship of false gods. We are mentioned again inthe Berit Chadashah (NT) in 2 Cor 6:15

2 Cor 6:14-15 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. Forwhat fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And whatcommunion has light with darkness?15And what unity has Messiah with

Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?

Paul is addressing the Assembly in Corinth, teaching them on Holiness and tobe set apart, to be different from the unbelievers and not to be yoked to them.

  • 7/26/2019 Parashah 35 Nasso.pdf

    8/11

    8

Spiritual Application: This yoke represents thecarrying of the Torah in your life. Paul asked thequestion; what unity does Yshua have with Belial orYokeless people and what fellowship is there betweenrighteousness and lawlessness? How many Believers

today are addressed by the same message from Paul, but they still walk like the Sons of Belial, bringing infalse worship and refuse to put on the Yoke of Torah intheir lives, saying the Law is abolished? The reasonwe carry the Yoke of Torah on our lives is so thatothers can see it and read the Torah on us without even noticing. It is similarto when Moses carried the Commandments as he came down from thepresence of YHVH, people could physically see the Commandments. When youcarry His Commandments in your life, people will look at you and see YHVHsStandards without you even uttering one word. Light makes no sound, it onlyilluminates and reveals the hidden things of YHVH. We are lights of this world.

This word for Yoke, ol makes the word Olahhliwhen adding a Hey. Theolah is the Elevation or Burnt offering, the offering that was the mostexpensive of all the offerings because it was entirely consumed and no one atefrom it. This is what is what Paul meant in Rom 12, where he said we are to beliving sacrifices, we need to become olahofferings unto YHVH, givingourselves completely unto Him. Yoke of Torah.

Tsemeddmothat means to pair, couple, two animals yoked togetherandacre. This word is used in Judges 19 whereLevite was travelling at the side of Mout Ephriam

with his Concubine, travelling to her fathershouse. After meeting up with him, their plan was togo back to the House of YHVH, with a couple ofasses (tsemed) with them. Ass is the wordchamorthat comes from the root word chamarthat means to be troubled or to be in turmoil.Thestory ends with the Concubine being killed by the

Sons of Belial, the Yokeless, lawless ones from the Tribe of Benyamin.

Spiritual Application: The picture of two asses yoked together is anindication of great turmoil, chaos and mayhem that came upon them because of

the Yoke that led them to the House of YHVH. The purpose of carrying thisYoke is to lead theConcubine (new believers) to the House of YHVH, but theyoke-less ones, the Sons of Belial, will try to stop you in achieving this goal. The other insight here is that the opposition not only comes from people in theworld, but also from fellow believers (Benyamin). The Sons of Belial arebrothers and sisters in Messiah that are opposed to carrying the Yoke of Torah, that are the ancient Way that leads to the House of YHVH. As a result of thisbattle, the people we try to bring into the Kingdom will be killed in the process, going back in the world and not wanting to have anything to do with thisconfused faith they were trying to be part of. Yoke of Unity.

    Nazarite Vow

The Nazarite vow was taken in order toseparate yourself from the world and commityourself solely to YHVH for a period of time.

It is the Hebrew word natziyr ryznthatmeans, consecrated one or devoted one, andis first found in Scripture in Gen 49:26 whereJacob blessed Joseph saying that the blessings from YHVH has exceeded thatof the blessings on his fathers, and will be like a crown upon his head, to thosewho choose to separate (natziyr) themselves form from their brethren.

    They were to:

separate him or herself unto YHVH for a period of time abstain from drinking or eating anything from the vine during the vow

grow the hair long stay away from dead bodies

Two places in the Berit Chadasha refers to the Nazarite Vow, the first waswhere Paul the Apostle committed to taking the vow to proof to the Phariseesthat he is still obeying and following the Commandments and Torah.

Paul part icipated in a Nazarite vow: Paul was in Corinth coming from Athenswhere he did that sound a bit strange to people who are not familiar with thecustoms and Commandments in the Torah.

Act 18:18 And Paul having remained many days more, taking leave of the

brothers, he sailed from there into Syria. And Priscilla and Aquila werewith him. And Paul had shorn his head in Cenchrea, for he had a vow.

Paul took a vow and shaved his head that is part of the Nazarite vow asdescribed in Numbers 6.

Num 6:4-8 All the days of his Nazariteship he shall eat nothing that ismade of the grapevine, from grape seeds even to a stem. (5) All the days ofhis vow to separate, no razor shall come upon his head. Until all the daysare fulfilled in which he separates to YHVH, he shall be holy. He shall let thelocks of the hair of his head grow. (6) All the days that he separates toYHVH, he shall not come near any dead body. (7) He shall not make

himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, or for his brother, or forhis sister, when they die, because his separation to his God is upon his head.(8) All the days of his separation he is holy to YHVH.

They accused Paul falsely, accusing him of teaching the Jews not to observethe Law of Moses.

Act 18:12-13 But Gallio being pro-consul of Achaia, the Jews with oneaccord rushed against Paul and brought him to the judgment seat, (13)saying, This one persuades men to worship Elohim contrary to the Torah.

Paul was accused of teaching the believing Jews not to keep the Law of Moses, better known as the Torah, they accused him of teaching them not tocircumcise their children and not to walk after the customs as prescribed in theLaw of Moses.

  • 7/26/2019 Parashah 35 Nasso.pdf

    10/11

    10

As a witness against these accusations, Paul and four men partook in theNazarite vow to prove that they did adhere to Torah and dedicated themselvesto YHVH, completely.

Act 21:20-24 And hearing, they glorified YHVH,and said to him, You see, brother, how many

thousands of Jews there are who believe, and theyare all zealous of the Torah. (21) And they areinformed concerning you (Paul), that you teach allthe Jews who are among the nations to forsake

Moses (Law of Moses Torah), saying that theyought not to circumcise their children, nor to walkafter the customs. (22) What is it therefore? At allevents a multitude will come together, for theywill hear that you have come. (23) Therefore do this, what we say to you:We have four men who have a vow on themselves;(Nazarite vow) (24)taking them, be purified with them, and be at expense for them, so that they

may shave their heads. And all may know that what they have been toldabout you is nothing (a lie), but you yourself also walk orderly and keep theTorah.

Act 21:26-27 Then taking the men on the next day, being purified withthem, Paul went into the Temple, declaring the fulfilment of the days of the

purification, until an offering should be offered for each of them. (27) Andwhen the seven days were about to be completed, the Jews who were from

Asia, having seen him in the Temple, stirred up all the crowd and laidhands on him,

All these accusations were false because of them observing this Commanded in

the Torah. When they saw Paul fulfilling the Nazarite law of purification, bringingthe sacrifice, they stirred up the crowd with the news and laid hands on him andwanted to kill him.

Be Filled with the Sprit: The second place it refers to one of the aspects of aNazarite Vow, is in Eph 5:18 where it says not to be drunk with wine, but to befilled with YHVHs Spirit. Is this related to this Nazarite vow that points out toyour dedication and separation from the rest of the Believers, to commit yourselfto YHVH on a higher level? Looking at the blessing released over Joseph, itmakes it clear that those who separate themselves more than their brothers, willreceive a blessing greater than your fathers. Joseph represents the Believers

coming from the Nations through the Gospel message of Messiah Yshua. Thisreveals to us that this blessing that now is upon these Believers in Messiah, willmake his brothers jealous, just like the blessings upon Joseph provoked hisbrothers to jealousy.

Q - What is this blessing that is greater than that of the fathers?

Receiving YHVH Spirit that will enable them to walk in His Ways and do thesame things Yshaudid, reaching the nations for the Kingdom of YHVH.

Rom 11:11 I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall?Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles.

It was possible for Paul to take a Nazarite Vow because the Temple still existedin his day.

    Taking a Nazari te Vow

Q - How will it be possible for us to take this vow in the absence of the Temple?

If you think about it, Joseph was separate (naziyr) to his brothers, and this wasin the absence of the Temple. That makes it possible to follow the principles of

this Vow, applying the intent of this Commandment in your life.

Abstain from the f ru it of the v ine: Vine or wine is the Hebrew word yayin ]yythat comes from an unused root meaning to effervesce - bubble, sparkle, hiss.It was first used in Scripture in Gen 9:21 where Noah drank wine, that resultedin uncovering his nakedness.

Spiritual Application: Nakedness is another way of describingthe weaknesses or shame of the flesh, that is sin. To abstainfrom the fruit of the vine is to walk Holy unto YHVH, discipliningand dedicating your body 100% unto Him so that you will notsin. This will teach you to finish what you have started and stay

committed to the cause, serving YHVH and broadening HisKingdom. Its all about commitment and dedication.

Not cutting the hair: No razor shall come upon the head. Razor is the word ta-

ar ritthat means, razor, to make naked, the sheath of a sword. It comesfrom the root word arah hry that means to lay bear, to pour out, to empty. Itis first used in Scripture in Gen 24:20 where Rebeckah hurried to give water tothe Camels, that was the sign to the Servant that she is the Bride of Isaac.

    Spiritual Application: Isaac represents

Messiah and Rebecca represents the Bride ofMessiah and the Servant represents YHVHsSpirit. The sign that she was the Bride, was thefact that she hurried to give water to thecamels.
