A: Vardalos, 53, who wrote and starred in the 2002 hit comedy, was waiting for new inspiration to strike. And it did—on her daughter’s fi rst day of kindergarten, when someone’s random comment was the spark that became My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, which combines original cast members (including Vardalos and John Corbett) with new additions (John Stamos, Rita Wilson) for an even bigger, fatter wedding, opening in theaters March 25.

The Grammy-winning country singer, best-selling author and TV host, 51, steps into a new role to play Mary, mother of

Jesus, in The Passion. The two-hour musical about the last hours of Jesus’ life, featuring contemporary music, airs live tonight on Fox from New Orleans. The Passion is narrated by Tyler Perry and also stars Seal, Jencarlos Canela, Chris Daughtry and gospel performers Michael W. Smith and Yolanda Adams. Why did you want to do The Passion? What’s interesting to me is whether you were raised in the church and you know the story; whether you’re Christian or not, the message is important: a story of suffering, sacrifi ce, love and forgiveness, hope and redemption.

In The Passion, you sing a couple of Whitney Houston songs. I told the pro-ducers, “If we’re going to do a Whitney Houston song, make sure that you’re thinking that Trisha Yearwood is going to

sing this. I believe in my ability to hit the notes, but I’m not Whitney Houston, so let’s make sure we’re not trying to copy what she did.”Any chance you will be collaborating with your husband, Garth Brooks, on an upcoming project? Garth and I are working on a Christmas duet album. We’ve been on tour for about a year and a half, and it’s a three-year tour, so we have our next 18 months laid out for us, but we’ve always wanted to make a duet album.There are more episodes of Trisha’s Southern Kitchen coming up on Food Network. How does cooking fulfill you in a way that singing doesn’t? I get satisfaction out of making a meal for people that I love and having them enjoy it. But there’s not really anything in my life that I do that’s just for me that feeds my soul like music does. I hope I never have to pick between all these things I get to do. sweat, can leave you more vulner-able to germs and infections. In fact, a University of California, Irvine, study found that staphy-lococcus bacteria can survive on gym equipment and locker room benches even after being sanitized. Staph bacteria are commonly found on the skin or in the noses of healthy people, but if they get into your bloodstream, say through an unbandaged cut, they can cause serious complications. Why does a mirror appear to swap the left and right sides of our faces but not our foreheads and chins, regardless of whether we orient our heads vertically or horizontally?

In fact, a mirror doesn’t reverse any part of our image. Instead, it reflects light directly back at us. (You can demonstrate this by facing a mirror and raising your left hand. The hand on the left side of your image goes up.) The mistaken perception comes from the assumption that because the mirror faces us, the image faces us too. In contrast, a camera records (not reflects) light. So a photo “faces us” and shows us what other people see.

My husband and I enjoy playing bridge with other couples. He is extremely smart but consis-tently gets “bad” cards, and he is starting to dread the game. Is there such a thing as luck?

Certainly! But I doubt that your husband is nearly always getting bad cards. Instead, I suspect he isn’t playing the game as well as he’d like. To remove Lady Luck from the table, ask your friends to agree beforehand, and the next time you play, deal the cards face-down as usual. Then, before picking up the hands, al-low your husband to trade hands with anyone he chooses. Do this repeatedly and see if he’s hap-pier with the results.

S uperman and I have a lot in common. I really want to protect the people I love, and I really try to do the right thing at all times. Some-times I’m going to mess up your life, but my

intentions are to try to be as helpful as possible. I suppose that’s the reality

of all relationships: Some-times you let the person you love down, and sometimes they let you down. It’s the “I love you regardless” thing that makes a relationship real.

� e Superman and Lois Lane relationship is com-plicated. He has the weight of the whole world on his shoulders. And there is the rather overwhelming fact that he’s a superpowered alien! But their relationship is also honest, because in Man of Steel Lois knows Clark Kent is Superman from the very beginning—and that’s where it diff ers a little from the comic books. � is time around, Lois knows exactly who he is. And I don’t think the secret of him being Superman aff ects their relationship; I think they’re way beyond that.

Superman and Lois are both extraordinary indi-viduals. Lois Lane is an incredibly intense journalist who can probably be considered quite abrasive by some of her peers who don’t have the same hunger and drive. And Superman’s a very unique individual with an incredible soul and an incredible heart. � ey are exceptional individuals who rub off on each other. To be with anyone else would probably be rather boring.

I think Superman is who he is because of the incred-ible women in his life, the Loises who have made him

In a Parade exclusive, Henry Cavill and Amy Adams—Superman and Lois Lane in the new movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (March 25)—talk about love, trust, complicated relationships and why this dynamic duo has endured for nearly 80 years. As told to Amy Spencer

W hen I was growing up I used to play Lois and Clark with my Barbie dolls. I loved Lois Lane with Chris-topher Reeve, and I played out stories for them. I had a big crush on Superman. I used to take tin foil and

make the ice from Superman II when he gave up his powers for Lois so he could be a mortal man and be with her.

Lois Lane was so outside of the world that I lived in. � is idea of living in a metropolis and being an indepen-dent woman putting herself in peril for the truth was kind of awesome. Lois was groundbreaking. Today a female reporter isn’t a big deal; we don’t even think twice about a woman on the ground in Baghdad or in Syria. And hopefully we’ll keep moving forward. (Now we just need to get her paid the same as her male counterparts!)

Ultimately, the most powerful thing about Superman and Lois is trust. He trusts her because she gives him a place to be vulnerable. And she trusts him with her life. As a journalist, she wants to believe in hope and integrity, yet she’s be-come jaded; learning to take somebody at their word is new for her. Superman represents hope and integrity, so he has reacquainted her with this optimistic side of herself. Lois’ job isn’t just about getting attention or awards. It really is about the pursuit of truth.

I think Lois balances Superman. He’d still be as strong without her physically, but emotionally Lois is a superwoman in her own way. It’s not always about having strength or speed or powers of invisibil-ity. Physically, no one is Superman’s equal—but being equal doesn’t mean we have the same strengths. It’s like with my husband and me: His strengths lie in one place, and my strengths lie in another, and when we bring them together it makes us stronger. So it really humanizes Superman to put him in a relationship with a strong woman where he can show a weakness that feels very human. It makes him mortal in a way.

I also love how willing Lois is to put her fears aside. She assesses the risks and says, “� is is probably a bad idea, but you know what?

S uperman and I have a lot in common. I really want to protect the people I love, and I really try to do the right thing at all times. Some-times I’m going to mess up your life, but my

intentions are to try to be as helpful as possible. I suppose that’s the reality

of all relationships: Some-times you let the person you love down, and sometimes they let you down. It’s the “I love you regardless” thing that makes a relationship real.

� e Superman and Lois Lane relationship is com-plicated. He has the weight of the whole world on his shoulders. And there is the rather overwhelming fact that he’s a superpowered alien! But their relationship is also honest, because in Man of Steel Lois knows Clark Kent is Superman from the very beginning—and that’s where it diff ers a little from the comic books. � is time around, Lois knows exactly who he is. And I don’t think the secret of him being Superman aff ects their relationship; I think they’re way beyond that.

Superman and Lois are both extraordinary indi-viduals. Lois Lane is an incredibly intense journalist who can probably be considered quite abrasive by some of her peers who don’t have the same hunger and drive. And Superman’s a very unique individual with an incredible soul and an incredible heart. � ey are exceptional individuals who rub off on each other. To be with anyone else would probably be rather boring.

I am going to do it anyway.” � is is something I try to teach my daughter: It’s not about being fearless; it’s about overcoming your fears and trying anyway. And as more women head out into what are more traditionally seen as male roles, I think it’s important to have a place where you can surrender to what-ever your version of femininity is. I know that’s something I’ve worked on, to have that balance of being strong but also allow-ing myself to be soft. For me, I feel more secure if I know I have a place to be taken care of emotionally, a place to be myself.

Sure, the stakes are a bit higher in Superman and Lois’ relationship because they’re dealing with someone going after world domination. But they have similar problems as other couples when it comes to core issues. In Batman v Superman their issues are very much about communication—being able to talk to the other person and trusting that what they say is taken at face value. It’s like with my husband, I’d be like, “Are you going to be here when I’m 80?” And you have to trust that when they say yes they mean it. � at’s hard for any couple.

I think together they probably make a very nice home. I think he’s the better cook. She travels a lot for work, so something tells me she eats really weird room service. Superman is always on the move, going from place to place, so he has learned to take care of himself. But they’re the kind of couple who aren’t that exciting. � ey probably just chill out at home. I think Lois likes watching news and tries to rope him into watching � e Bachelor. But Superman’s not interested—he’s too busy making dinner. And I imagine he gives her foot rubs.

Going forward, I hope Lois and Superman’s story continues to be told, whatever that is. And a vacation would be nice. I don’t imagine they’re going to make a movie called Lois and Supes on Vacation, where they go to the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. But they need some nice light time, just the two of them. No reporting, no world in peril—just a nice cabana!

1 0 1Asparagus is cropping up all over at farmers' markets and in grocery stores. Its season is February to June, peaking in April. Look for tight tips (unfurling is a sign of age), and skip any bunches with dry or split ends.

1. For vinaigrette: Whisk together zest and juice of 1 lemon, 1 Tbsp rice wine vinegar, 1 tsp Dijon mus-tard, 1 tsp maple syrup, ¼ tsp fi ne sea salt and ¼ tsp pepper. Slowly add ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil, whisking constantly.

2. Bring a large saucepan of salted water to a boil; place a large bowl of ice water next to stovetop. Cook 1 lb asparagus, ends trimmed, tips intact and spears cut into 1-inch pieces, 2–4 minutes or just until crisp-tender. (Visit Parade.com/skills to learn how to prep asparagus.) With a slotted spoon, transfer to the

ice water. When cool to the touch, drain well and spread on a towel to absorb any remaining water.

3. Combine asparagus and 3 cups cooked white quinoa in a large bowl. Toss with enough vinaigrette to coat all of the ingredients, about ¼ cup. Add 1/3 cup toasted cashews or hazelnuts, coarsely chopped, 1/3 cup thinly sliced scallions, ¼ cup packed fresh mint leaves, fi nely sliced, and ¼ tsp each salt and freshly ground pepper; toss again. Add more salt, pepper and/or vin-aigrette to taste. Serve warm or at room temperature. Serves 4–6.
