His highlight reel includes work-ing with Sean Connery in The Name of the Rose when he was 16, and roles in True Romance, Pump Up the Volume and the cult clas-sic Heathers. Now the native New Yorker, 46, returns to TV for the second season of USA Network’s drama-thriller Mr. Robot, premier-ing July 13. Earlier this year Slater won a Golden Globe for his role as the imaginary title character. How would you describe Mr. Robot? It’s about a disgruntled young computer hacker who gets recruited into an organi-zation that wants to restore balance and harmony to society. Viewers now know that Mr. Robot is a creation in the mind of Elliot (Rami Malek). What does that mean for you? I feel more freedom. In season one, Mr. Robot said, “What is real?” I always feel I am as real as Elliot imagines me to be. Have you ever talked to someone who’s not actually there? I have. Usually it is me in the mirror, giving myself a pep talk. We all have that in us.Has Mr. Robot made you paranoid about the internet? Definitely. We were given this phenomenal tool. It was like being given the keys to the kingdom without any regulation whatsoever. We’ve got to rein it in a little bit. What was the key for your transition from child actor? Perseverance and be-lief in myself. Honestly, I can’t do anything else. I love this business, getting to act, finding new characters to play and work-ing with creative, talented people. As long as I can keep getting the opportunities to do that, I’m very happy and thrilled.

I loved Lake Bell in the movie In

a World… What is her role in The

Secret Life of Pets? —Consuela L., Lincoln, Neb.

A: Bell, 37, wrote, directed and starred in In a World… (2013), about voice-over artists. She also voiced roles in Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Cassius and Clay and Tron: Uprising. In the new animated The Secret Life of Pets, now in theaters, she voices Chloe, a cat. “Chloe is a bit sarcastic, a little wry and, in general, has a bit of an air of being higher than thou,” she says. “She’s sweet, though.”

WALTER SCOTT ASKS ... CHRISTIAN SLATERSteve Carell, 53, took a break from comedy for his

Golden Globe–nominated role in The Big Short and

Oscar-nominated performance in Foxcatcher, but now

The Office star is back showing his funny side as a

Hollywood bigwig in Woody Allen’s Café Society,

which also stars Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart

and Blake Lively. Here are five facts you may not

know about the Massachusetts native.

1. Carell made his film debut in 1991 in Curly Sue.

2. He once worked as a mailman but quit after a

few months because he was “very, very bad at it.”

3. He owns a general store in Marshfield, Mass.,

where he has been spotted stocking shelves.

4. Carell is an expert ice skater and has played in a

men’s ice-hockey league in Burbank, Calif.

5. He wasn’t the first choice to play Michael Scott on

The Office. Paul Giamatti, Hank Azaria, Bob Odenkirk and Martin Short were all considered

ahead of him.

OUT OF THE OFFICE

Is Diane Kruger coming back to TV? I enjoyed her series The Bridge.

—Barbara P., Waco, TexasA: If you want to see more of Kruger’s work, you’re going to have to head to the movies. She has back-to-back films in July. First, she stars as the sister-in-law to Russell Crowe’s character in the just-released Fathers and Daughters, about a Pulitzer Prize–winning author who suffers a mental breakdown. Kruger, 39, follows that with The Infiltrator, in theaters July 13, based on the true story of an elaborate sting to bring down several drug lords, including Pablo Escobar.

While walking my dog, I won-dered: If our weights were equal, would a biped (me) or a quadruped (him) expend more calories? —William Dunscombe, Plainfield, N.J.

Say you weigh 200 pounds, and your 200-pound mastiff takes you for a walk. Each of you will burn roughly the same number of calories. (The number of legs makes no difference.) But smaller animals burn more calories per pound than larger ones: If your 50-pound dalma-tian and 600-pound pony go along, Spot will burn more than one-fourth as many calories as you do, and Misty will burn less than three times as many. So ponies are more efficient than humans, but humans are more efficient than dogs.

Why does our hair turn gray as we get older?

—K. Thomas, Purcellville, Va.

Our hair turns gray, then white, as our hair follicles slowly stop producing the pigment that col-ors the strands, but the timing of this process is inherited (as is our hair color) and not related to the aging of the rest of our bodies. Depending on your genetic back-ground, you might start going gray in your 20s and be just as strong and healthy as your peers, or you might still have much of your youthful hair color in your 70s, despite a few wrinkles. And no, it's not true that teenagers cause gray hair in their parents. It just seems that way sometimes.

Your eyes have an outer protective lipid layer that keeps in moisture.

Only Soothe XP contains RestorylTM mineral oils that help restore

this layer, seal in moisture, and protect against further irritation.

Ordinary drops can’t do that.

Dry eye happens when this layerbreaks down. Soothe® XP can help.

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson talks science, space, neckties, vests, fountain pens and his cameo in the new movie Ice Age: Collision Course.By Neil Pond

He’s one of America’s most distin-

guished scientists and the director

of the Hayden Planetarium at New

York City’s American Museum of Natu-

ral History. You may be familiar with

Neil deGrasse Tyson, 57, as the host of

the award-winning Cosmos: A Spacetime

Odyssey on Fox or from his StarTalk pod-

cast and National Geographic Channel

TV series.

Soon he’ll be on the big screen—sort

of—as the voice of Neil deBuck Weasel

in the new animated comedy Ice Age:

Collision Course, in theaters July 22.

“I’m not up there very long,” Tyson

says. “Just a few minutes. But they’re key

minutes.” Tyson’s character is imaginary.

He appears inside the subconscious of

Buck the weasel to help him figure out

‘ICE’MAN

how to save the Earth from a dooms-

day date with an asteroid by steering

him toward solutions based on science,

facts and reason.

“None of the Ice Age movies take

themselves too seriously, and that’s

part of their charm,” Tyson says. “I’m

there, in part, to make sure the little

bit of science that matters, they get it

right—the force of gravity, electricity,

magnetism, static electricity,

collisions shaping planetary

surfaces and shaping the early

solar system.”

If you go see Ice Age: Collision

Course, you’ll see countless play-

ful attempts to put science into

action, he says—and a reminder

that “science is not ‘some other

thing,’ but is all around us at all

times.”

VESTED INTERESTSTyson bought his first “space” vest at Hansen (now Clark) Planetarium in Salt Lake City. “They didn’t have any my size and weren’t get-ting any more,” he says. “All the people working there were wearing them, so I found a salesperson approximately my size and said, ‘Would you sell me the one you’re wearing?’” You’ll see the il-lustrated version on Neil deBuck Weasel in Ice Age: Collision Course.

TIE GUY“If you attend any conferences of astrophysicists, everybody’s got some kind of geeky space tie. They’re basically camouflage,” Tyson says. He has about 120. “I may own more than most,” he admits. “I draw a line—it has to be art, no photos. I have four different renderings of Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. Also, I try not to have people, but I

have two exceptions: I have one with Einstein and one with Isaac Newton.”

THE PEN IS MIGHTIER“I collect fountain pens and enjoy writing with them, as an homage to days when you would dip your pen in an inkwell and

liquid ink was the medium in which you communicated your thoughts.” He knows his collection of 40 is “modest” compared to those of heavy-duty collectors, but “they’re kind of like my children—each one has a different temperament, and not all of them behave the same way under the same conditions.”

FAVE SPACE FLICKSContact Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey starred in this 1997 drama based on a Carl Sagan novel. “How would people react to the discovery that not only are we not alone in the universe, but that the aliens might, in fact, be much smarter that we are?” Tyson says. “And what are the conse-quences of that to our philosophy, our culture, our religion and our relationships to one another?”

Deep Impact A 1998 “asteroid collision movie that gets most of the physics right.”

MY SECRET LIFE“If I had another life—in a parallel universe—I would be a lyricist for Broadway musicals. I love the simple turns of phrase that convey information when set to music. When I’m writing for the public, I want a sentence to resonate with a rhythm and a context that gives deeper meaning than a simple conveyance of those words would otherwise give you.”

1. I’m not making you wait on purpose. In a recent Parade/Cleveland Clinic survey, 38 percent of re-spondents said they wait, on average, 30 min-utes or more for their doctor. “It’s never our desire to make people wait,” says Wanda Filer, M.D., president of the American Academy of Family Physicians. “But the best-laid plans frequently get blown out of the water.” Maybe the patient before you was late and was squeezed in or needed stitches, or someone mentioned chest pain during a routine checkup. “That stops everything,” says Filer. “You have to focus your attention on this patient.” You may never know what caused the

holdup. “I can’t tell you what happened because of confidentiality rules,” says Filer.

2. Don’t play 20 questions. To get the most from your visit, your doctor wants to know why you’re there, ASAP. Don’t assume that your doc will find what you’re secretly worried about—whether it’s a lump in your breast or mole behind your ear. Tell her your top three concerns. And don’t wait until she’s leaving the exam room to reveal your worries. “If a patient brings up something major as I’m leaving, I have to address it,” says Tully. “I then have to repeat the exam, looking at an area

I may not have focused on before.”

3. I need details, please. Be specific about any symptoms you have. If you can’t shake a cough, tell your doctor when it started, when it bothers you most, whether you’re coughing up phlegm, how you’ve been treat-ing it, what helps your symptoms and so on. “The more specific you can be about what is happening, the better,” says Tully. For example, “If you’ve had the cough less than a month, that changes my thinking and how I am going to go through my workup rather than if you’ve had it longer,” she says. Bonus: Specifics may also help your doc make

a diagnosis without ordering pricey tests.

4. Don’t feel badly if I inter-rupt you. OK, the story of how you sprained your ankle may be hilarious. But your doctor doesn’t need to know it. “I am on a time constraint,” says Kimberly J. Carter, M.D., an internal medicine specialist at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan. “Don’t be upset if I interrupt and ask ques-tions to get you back on track.” If the reason for your complaint isn’t obvious, those questions will help your doctor sift through conditions with similar symptoms and hone in on a diagnosis.

5. I’ve heard it all before. So don’t hold back. Yeah, it’s embarrassing to tell your doctor that sex hurts or you’ve been farting up a storm, but doctors need to know the gory details to figure out what is going on. “We’ve heard it all,” says Filer. “We’re not here to pass judgment.”

6. Tell me if you don’t under-stand something. If you’ve been given a diagnosis, your doctor needs you to grasp what it is, how it’s going to be treated and how to follow up if you have questions, says Tully. So speak up if anything isn’t clear. Repeat instructions for taking medication back

Getting the most from your doctor’s visit is as much your job as it is your doc’s. With a full caseload of patients to see every day, your primary care provider has, on average, 22 minutes to spend with you. “You know your body best,” says Amber Tully, M.D., an assistant professor

in the Department of Family Medicine at Cleveland Clinic. “So you have to be your own advocate.” Here are seven things doctors want you to keep in mind the next time you have an appointment.

to the doc and ask about the most common side effects of your medication, when you can expect to feel better and what to do if you don’t or if your condition worsens.

7. I need you to be honest. If you “borrowed” your spouse’s anti-biotics to treat a self-diagnosed sinus infection or swallowed tons of ibuprofen for your bum knee, fess up. “If you’ve been taking antibiotics for a week and you’re not getting better, that tells me you probably have a viral not a bacterial infection,” says Tully. “If you’ve been taking eight Motrin a day and you have a stomachache, it could be that the Motrin is irri-tating the lining of your stomach.”

Also, come clean if you haven’t taken your meds. “Lots of treat-ment decisions are based on what the patient tells us,” says Carter. If your blood pressure is high and you say you’ve been taking your meds, “I am going to add on new drugs thinking your pressure is resistant,” she says. That extra medication could cause your blood pressure to drop drastically, she adds. Your doctor also needs to know if (and how much) you smoke or drink, which up your risk for lots of illnesses. “I need this information not to pass judg-ment,” says Filer, “but to counsel you and help you be healthier.”

What makes collectors tick? We look inside the hearts, minds and cupboards of six Americans who have a pas-sion for the most interesting things, from robots and D batteries to bells and scary ceramics. By Maura Rhodes

OH MY!HEIDI HANLEY 55, Mamaroneck, N.Y.

What she collects DESK SERVICE BELLS

How many she has 46

Where she keeps them “On

display on a console table in

the family room.”

How she got started “One

day at an antique show, I

saw a service bell. I bought

it; it was intended as a gift.

I never gave it because I

found a second service bell

that was really cool. Once

I had these two bells, my

collection was started.”

Why she loves them “I love

that the bells aren’t precious,

they aren’t behind glass. They’re out and everyone from babies to grandparents bang these

bells. You can’t help but touch them when you walk by because they’re crying out to be

rung. I also love how each one is so different—one can be ugly and have a pretty sound and

vice versa.”

Why she’s a collector “I know people have reasons for collecting things like antique toys or

stamps, where there’s value attached to it. My bells can be worth anywhere from $16 to several

hundred dollars. One was made in India. Another I had shipped from London and it has a

Victorian look about it. But for me the provenance isn’t crucial—just the look and the sound.”

!How he got started “One

day when I was 5, I was

walking to the swimming

pool and passed by the

house of John Daniel, a

famous magician in the ’60s

who collected Lionel trains.

He was having a yard sale.

I remember staring at this

box of trains with the fas-

cination only a child could

have. I had a quarter in my

hand. The guy [Daniel]

took it and gave me a box

of trains. The next day I

went there again—I didn’t

get the concept that the

yard sale was over—and

he handed me another box

of trains. That’s how it all

started. I’m still friends

with his wife.”

Where he keeps his collec-tions “I’m not what I call a

‘black hole collector,’ who

puts everything in storage,

and I’m not a ‘crush’ collec-

tor, who crowds everything

into a display case. I love to

have key pieces on display

and I rotate them. I want

my house to look like a

home and not a hoarder’s

house. I used to rent garages

from neighbors to keep

my vintage cars in. [He has

five at the moment.] I just

bought a building around

the corner from my house

where I plan to display my

stuff and sell coffee too.”

Why he loves collecting“Collectors are a breed

unto themselves. For me

it’s about the context and

history as much as the

aesthetics—the story that

goes along with a particular

item. I’ve always loved the

feeling that whoever had

something before me loved

it. Was someone looking at

this watch when his child

was born? Did a guy wear

this tie on his first date

with his wife? What also

drives me is the joy and

excitement of exposing

people to things they’ve

never seen before. I love

the stuff, but I also love to

share it and talk about it.”

JUSTINPINCHOT54, Altadena, Calif.

What he collects TOY ROBOTS, VINTAGE CARS, MICROPHONES, WRISTWATCHES

“I especially love detail and mechanical things and dials. Just last year I started col-lecting D cell batteries with cool graphics. Now I have more than 300 of them. Collecting is all I’ve done during the past several years. I financed my collecting by becoming a dealer.”

BRUCE TYLER65, Montclair, N.J.

What he collects EXOTIC BEADS

How many he has “Thousands of individual beads and several hundred strands of beads.”

Where he keeps them “They aren’t on display in

my house. I keep a lot of them in watchmaker

boxes. I’ve exhibited them at the library and at

beading studios.”

His favorite “Facsimiles of warring states

beads from China. The Chinese govern-

ment has the originals. The real ones

were found in tombs of nobles and the

wealthy. We don’t know what they were

for. I like them because they’re different.

They’re also called horned beads.”

Why he loves them “Because of the beauty of

them and because they represent a period in

human history. There were beads traded for

everything, from soup to nuts to slaves. You have

beads with poems on them. They can represent

a family’s lineage. Certain beads from Nagaland

[in India] represent the number of human heads

taken in battle. A whole range of things.”

How she got started “When I was growing up, my parents

Do you get discouraged when you

hear your telephone ring? Do you

avoid using your phone because

hearing difficulties make it hard to

understand the person on the other

end of the line? For many Americans

the telephone conversation – once

an important part of everyday life

– has become a thing of the past.

Because they can’t understand what

is said to them on the phone, they’re

often cut off from friends, family,

doctors and caregivers. Now, thanks

to innovative technology there is

finally a better way.

A simple idea… made possible

with sophisticated technology.

If you have trouble understanding

a call, the Captioning Telephone

can change your life. During a

phone call the words spoken

to you appear on the phone’s

screen – similar to closed

captioning on TV. So when

you make or receive a call, the

words spoken to you are not only

amplified by the phone, but scroll

across the phone so you can

listen while reading everything

that’s said to you. Each call is

routed through a call center, where

computer technology – aided by

a live representative – generates

voice-to-text translations. The

captioning is real-time, accurate

and readable. Your conversation

is private and the captioning

service doesn’t cost you a penny.

Captioned Telephone Service (CTS) is

regulated and funded by the Federal

Communications Commission (FCC)

and is designed exclusively for

individuals with hearing loss. In order

to use CTS in your home, you must

have standard telephone service and

high-speed Internet connectivity

where the phone will be used.

Callers do not need special

equipment or a captioning

phone in order to speak

with you.

Finally… a phone you

can use again. The

Captioning Telephone is

also packed with features

to help make phone calls easier.

The keypad has large, easy to use

buttons. You get adjustable volume

amplification along with the ability

to save captions for review later. It

even has an answering machine that

provides you with the captions of

each message.

See for yourself with our

exclusive home trial. Try the

Captioning Telephone in your

own home and if you are not

completely amazed, simply

return it within 60-days for a

refund of the product purchase

price. It even comes with a

5-year warranty.

The Captioning Telephone is intended for use by people with hearing loss. In purchasing a Captioning Telephone, you acknowledge

that it will be used by someone who cannot hear well over a traditional phone. 811

PRESIDENTIALLIBRARIES

RICHARD NIXON PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY

& MUSEUMSimi Valley, Calif.

We celebrate our last in a series.

By Kathleen McCleary

Don’t miss: The Vietnam War gallery exhibit that documents the return of American POWs at the end of the war. “It was one of the most com-plex conflicts in U.S. history, but the return of the POWs was a huge thing. I’m always affected by seeing now-Senator John McCain walking down the steps of the plane, limp-ing and shaking the hands of the dignitaries there to meet the plane,” says director Michael Ellzey.

You’ll be surprised: Nixon’s resigna-tion letter is in the collection, but not on permanent display. “People are fascinated not only with the accomplishments during his administration but just as much with the intricacies of his human character,” Ellzey says. “How did a person come to fall like that?”

Relevant today: Nixon appeared in the first televised presidential debate ever, in September 1960 against John F. Kennedy. Many thought Nixon won the debate verbally, but he “looked terrible, pale and sweating, and Kennedy was the stalwart of the new television icon,” Ellzey says. “Televised de-bates are huge to this day, and that began with Nixon and Kennedy.”

Go to Parade.com/presidential to read about all 13 presidential libraries.

My grandchildren are my pride and joy.

One of the charming things about young

children is they’re painfully honest. Months

ago, when reading a story to my 4-year-old

granddaughter, she looked away and said

that my breath was “stinky.” I didn’t think

much of it until it happened again the next

week – and it was right after I brushed my

teeth.

I’ve always kept up with oral hygiene,

so bad breath wasn’t something I worried

about. I didn’t notice it myself, but I asked

my dentist about it soon after. According to

him, bad breath is very common in seniors.

A major problem for many of us is that less

saliva is produced as we get older, and a

number of over-the-counter and prescrip-

tion medications (another fact of getting

older) make that problem much worse.

Most of us have to take multiple medica-

tions as we age, a cause for a very dry

mouth – and very bad breath.

Saliva acts as a natural mouth rinse,

clearing away bacteria and food particles.

When your mouth is dry, bacteria thrive.

Leftover food particles feed bacteria and

break down, releasing sulfur as bad breath.

Plus, we have receding and bleeding gums,

diabetes or other conditions compromising

our oral health.

In the past, I’ve used plenty of products

that I thought would solve bad breath, but

I didn’t understand the real problem – or-

dinary mouthwashes that claim to kill bac-

teria and give you “fresh breath” contain

alcohol. They temporarily reduce bacteria,

but then in an hour or less, your breath

stinks again, whether you realize it or not.

Plus, the alcohol dries out your mouth even

more, worsening bad breath caused from

medicines.

My dentist suggested an alcohol-free

mouthwash, but that alone wasn’t enough.

It was important to me to eliminate bad

breath for a full 24 hours and have healthy

gums and not gingivitis. I did some re-

search and found SmartMouth Advanced

Clinical Formula (Gum & Plaque).

Granted, it’s not one of the cheaper brands,

but it offered all the benefits I was looking

for.

So, there are two separate solutions in-

side the SmartMouth bottle that don’t come

into contact until they are poured down

through a dual-pour spout into the cup.

There they mix and activate to provide 12

hours without bad breath. I rinse in the

morning for all day protection and at night

before bedtime for no more morning breath.

The taste is pleasant, not overly minty.

There’s no burning and no drying of my

mouth, but the rinse kills bacteria that

cause bleeding gums and gingivitis.

My dentist approves of my healthy gums,

and my granddaughter lovingly tells me,

“You’re not stinky anymore, Grandma!”

SmartMouth Advanced Clinical Formula

(Gum & Plaque) is available at Walgreens,

CVS, Target, Rite Aid, Kroger and else-

where, and now they have a Dry Mouth

formula that eliminates bad breath PLUS

provides soothing relief from dry mouth,

on the shelves at Albertsons, Kmart and

(NO MEAT!)

s

Vegetables are stealing the spotlight on plates these days, with more than a third of Americans eating less meat. And this recipe, adapted from Meat on the Side: Delicious Vegetable-Focused Recipes

for Every Day by Cooking Channel host Nikki Dinki, proves eating your veggies doesn't have to mean giving up bold flavor. —Alison Ashton

Preheat oven to 425°F. Toss 1½ lb baby carrots with 1½ Tbsp olive oil, 1 tsp smoked paprika and ¾ tsp kosher salt. Spread in a single layer on a rimmed bak-ing sheet. Roast 45–50 minutes or until very charred and slightly shriveled, stir-ring occasionally. Combine 1 (15-oz) can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed; 4 oz goat cheese; ¼ cup lightly packed flat-leaf parsley leaves; 1 tsp minced

fresh rosemary; juice of ½ lemon; 1 garlic clove and ½ tsp kosher salt in a food processor; pulse until smooth. With motor running, pour 2 Tbsp olive oil through food chute; process to combine. Spread bean mixture evenly over cut sides of 6 (6-inch) baguettes, halved lengthwise. Top with a layer of sliced cucumber, carrots and alfalfa sprouts. Serves 6.
