WALTER SCOTT’S

A: The native New Yorker,35, who got her break at age 18 in 10 Things I Hate About You, will be back alongside Matt Damon as espionage operative Nicky Parsons when Jason Bourne opens in theaters July 29. But first, she stars opposite Anthony Hopkins and Ray Liotta in Blackway, open-ing June 10, as a woman stalked by a sociopathic ex-cop. “When I started acting, I just wanted to get hired,” Stiles says. “Now it’s about who I’m going to be working with and whether I’ll learn from them.” C

The Emmy- and Tony Award-winning actress, 62, is known for her quirky, sexy, offbeat characters in such movies as This Boy’s Life, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Sea of Love. She continues that tradi-tion in Animal Kingdom, the TNT drama series premiering June 14, as Janine, the matriarch of a family of California criminals. Janine is certainly dark and dangerous. One of the first things you learn as an actor is that you have to love your characters. You certainly

have to empathize with them. Most people who do bad things

don’t think they are bad.

She’s the head of one hugely dysfunctional family. The family is what the show’s about. The heist or criminal workings, that’s simply the train that pulls the story along.

How did you know when you were a success—or are you still striv-

ing? I don’t know if I was ever striving. I was just working, putting one foot in front of the other diligently. I’m not a big goal person. I didn’t have big goals as a young woman, or a middle-aged woman or an older woman. I’m doing it until I don’t want to do it

anymore.

You once said, “I’d rather be at home with a book watching Turner Classic Movies.” I do adore Turner Classic Movies and I read a lot.

A: Prior to being nomi-nated for an Academy Award for the movie

Blood Diamond, Hounsou, 52, appeared on Alias and ER. Now he’s returning to TV in season two of Fox’s psycho-

logical thriller Wayward Pines, air-

ing Wednesday nights, as CJ Mitchum, a his-torian with extensive knowledge of the town.

Will Julia Stiles return for the next Jason Bourne movie? She is one of my favorite actresses.

Is Wayward Pines the first TV series that Djimon Hounsou has done? He looks familiar.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if a whooping cough vaccination is right for you and your family.

MY, WHAT A BIG WHOOPING COUGH YOU HAVE.

Understand the danger your grandchild faces from whooping cough. It’s a highly contagious disease that can be

especially serious—even fatal—for infants. Unfortunately, many people who spread it may not know they have it.

If you have a new grandchild or one on the way, ask your doctor or pharmacist about ways you can help protect

yourself and your family from whooping cough, including getting vaccinated.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone, including those around babies, make

sure their whooping cough vaccination is up-to-date.

The first thing you see when you drive onto the lot of CBS

Television City in Los Angeles is an enormous billboard of

James Corden’s face. It’s there because The Late Late Show With

James Corden is a hot property. In the year since Corden, 37,

inherited it from its former host, Craig Ferguson, it has become

known for inventive filmed bits—like spoofing a Calvin Klein

underwear commercial with David Beckham, Corden jump-

ing into a stranger’s pool in his boxers and the hugely popular

Carpool Karaoke segments with singers including Adele, One

Direction, Justin Bieber, Gwen Stefani and Elton John, which

have gone viral with more than a billion YouTube views.

Corden, the son of a Royal Air Force musician, came to Hol-

lywood from a middle-class family in Buckinghamshire, England,

by way of British TV, film success and hit plays on Broadway.

He was in the film version of The History Boys in 2006 and then,

six years later, onstage in One Man, Two Guvnors, a performance

that won him a Tony Award. (He will host the 70th annual Tony

Awards, June 12 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.)

Now comfortably settled in Los Angeles with his wife, Julia,

and their daughter, Carey, 1, and son, Max, 5, he is relaxed as he

Now comfortably settled in Los Angeles with his wife, Julia, and their daughter, Carey, 1, and son, Max, 5, he is relaxed as he

talks about growing up in England, being bullied in school, his family, boy bands and his love for America.

Were you a funny kid?Everyone was funny at school. The difference is that they came to have families that said, “Stop it now. Grow up.” That often means being boring. The cool dudes at my school are still in that same town, working as estate agents or in office jobs. It’s the geeks and the chubby musical theater kid who left that town for New York or somewhere else and are now living in-teresting lives. A lot of the other lads peaked when they were 15. You don’t ever want to peak at 15.

Why were you bullied in school? At my school you could be bullied for anything. I felt like an outsider: “We don’t want you to be here.” I wasn’t bullied ter-ribly. There were people at my school who were bullied worse. If you weren’t bullied, you’re probably a [jerk].

You’ve been very success-ful. Do you ever fear you could wake up one morn-ing and find your success was a fluke? For sure. I don’t think there is a single performer in the world who’d disagree with that. If you don’t have that [fear], you’re probably not very good. You always think, “I don’t know what I’m doing and they’re going to find out.” And then the deeper you think about it, the more you realize, Oh, no one truly knows what they’re doing! Everyone’s just trying their best.

In your show monologues, you joke about American life. What do you really think of America?I grew up dreaming of go-ing to America. I’d never been to New York be-fore I went [to Broad-way] with The History

Boys when I was 25. My family never went to America on holiday. We could never afford it.

So you like being here?I absolutely love the positivity of the place, the sense that anything is possible. The idea that you can achieve anything you want is so in-spirational. And if you do, the Americans go, “Good for you. That’s great! Do it!” There’s a lack of cynicism here, which I absolutely respond to and adore.

Tell me about your wife, Julia.I love her. I love her. Before I met her, I was quite lost. I was going out quite a lot, but really only going out to find someone to stay in with. I met her, and immediately she anchored me emotionally and in every sense. She’s a great person.

She must have some faults? That’s the only fault I can find in her—that she chose to marry me! [Laughs]

How did you meet?We met through my friend Dominic Cooper, who was in The History Boys with me. We used to live together in Primrose Hill [London]. Julia had known Dominic a long time.

Was she an actress? No. She worked for Save the Children.

Is she still involved in that charity? No. She’s just trying to save our own children. [Laughs]

You’ve done bits with One Direction. They’re brilliant, fantastic!

You really like boy bands. Why?Because all I ever wanted to do was sing and dance in a boy band. It seemed like the greatest life you could ever have. When all my friends were into, like, Nirvana, I was into the Back-street Boys. I loved the showmanship of it.

You’ve changed the format of late-night chat shows. We want to make the show young. We’re on after a talk show [The Late Show With Stephen Colbert], so we have to have a different look and feel. Colbert is doing his show in a 500-seat Broadway theater. Where would you go after the theater? You might go to a bar, or a comedy club or dinner. OK, then let’s have seating with little Tiffany lamps in between and try to make it more intimate. All we want is [the viewers] to see people in a different light.

talk show.

Corden’s Carpool Karaoke segments (with acts including One Direction, above) have become breakout hits on their own.

it suits me very much. I’m really happy. Look, you’re al-ways stronger if you try to find a positive in something. Because, my God, a day is going to come when I’m going to get a phone call at 3 o’clock in the afternoon telling me something genuinely bad and it’s going to floor me for a while. And every day that that doesn’t happen is a brilliant gift.

Will you go back to acting?Maybe. I’d be very disappointed in myself if I don’t do another play or a musical.

It has been said that the show’s sensibility is gay. Why is that? My friend went to dinner with a producer the other day, and he mentioned my wife and kids. And this producer said, “Well, I was certain he [Corden] was gay.” [Laughs] There is a very effemi-nate sort of openness to our show, whether it’s Joseph Gordon- Levitt kissing me on the mouth or David Beckham and me in our underwear. I feel it is a won-derful thing to be as confident and open as you can be.

To be open about what you’re feeling? Just the other day we had Luke Bryan on the show, and I said, “It was like you just get lost in his eyes.” And it is true. There is something to be said for just being an open and honest rep-resentation of yourself. This is not anything that you should be ashamed of in any way. There is a duty to talk about where you stand, provided it’s entertain-ing. Because I don’t think any-one is tuning in to our show to see someone on a soapbox just banging a drum.

How do you do that? We do that every time we get in a car [in Carpool Karaoke] and drive around with someone. And when guests sit together hav-ing a chat, it throws up brilliant moments. My favorite shows are where you’re seeing groups of people that you’ve never seen [together] before. Zac Efron and Sir Ben Kingsley. Amar’e Stoudemire and Betty White. Ray Romano, Salma Hayek and Gary Oldman. We want to be a show that is a fun place to be. That’s why our set is 360 degrees. There’s no line between me and you.

When you do the out-of-the studio bits, like the one where you are showing a ritzy Los Angeles house for sale and dive into the pool, is that scripted?God, no. I love those things. No one knew I was about to do that.

You seem so exuberant-ly happy on the show.Yeah, for sure. We’re selling joy. That’s our currency. Twelve, 15 years ago, late-night talk shows could have a bit of snark and cynicism because everybody felt very safe in the world. Now the news that you’re watching at 11 o’clock is terrifying in so

many respects. I’m a guest here in America, and I consider my job is to bring a slice of levity and light at the end of some-one’s day, to try and make people smile.

What makes you personally happy?[Laughs] I’m at my happiest puttering around! I love noth-ing more than a good day of schlubbing around in shorts. I’m really enjoying life since taking this job. I’ve got to say

‘I WAS QUITE LOST.’

‘BEFORE I MET HER,’Corden says of wife Julia,

Ask MarilynBy Marilyn vos Savant

I've heard that painting our roofs white could reduce our air- conditioning costs in the summer. But wouldn't we lose much of what we gain in the winter, when a white roof would reflect warmth from the sun?

—G.Z., Columbus, Ind.

It depends on the local climate and the kind of "cool" roof. (The term refers to a roof that is simply cooler than a comparable stan-dard roof.) Ideally, your cool roof would have a smooth, bright white surface and be horizontal in rela-tion to the ground. This sort of roof has been common for centuries in many hot parts of the world, but it isn't a realistic goal for most U.S. homeowners. Still, in our country overall, we would likely gain more than we would lose. Individual states and cities must make their own assessments. Cool roofs on homes are just one part of larger energy-savings plans that include changes to public and commercial building codes, cool pavement, trees, other greenery and more.

Go to Parade.com/pops for the recipe for our 1963 Chocolate Milk Pops.

We love dipping into Parade’s archives to see how our tastes have changed. We were charmed by the Chocolate Milk Pops from 1963 but thought they were ripe for an update.

Today’s creative cooks are chilling everything from coconut milk to tequila, and they’ve swapped yesteryear’s disposable paper cups for environmentally friendlier reusable popsicle molds. —Alison Ashton

MEXICAN DARK CHOCOLATE

POPSICLESCombine 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder, ⅓ cup sugar, 2 Tbsp corn-starch and ¼ tsp salt in a saucepan. Add 2 cups unsweetened almond milk, whisking until smooth. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently. Cook 1 minute or until thickened. Remove from heat. Stir in 1½ oz dark chocolate, chopped. Add ½ tsp vanilla extract, ½ tsp almond extract and ¼ tsp ground cinnamon. Cool, stirring occasionally to prevent skin from forming. Scrape mixture into 6 (3-oz) popsicle molds and freeze. Serves 6.

Combine 7 oz cubed fresh or frozen mango, 1 cup sweet-ened condensed milk, 1 cup canned coconut milk and ¼ tsp ground cardamom in a blender or food processor. Puree until smooth. Stir in 1 seeded, minced serrano chile pepper. Pour into 6 (3-oz) popsicle molds; freeze. Serves 6.

WATERMELON-BASIL-TEQUILA POPSICLES

Combine 2 cups cubed seedless watermelon, ¾ cup cold water, ¼ cup basil leaves, 2 Tbsp tequila, 2 Tbsp honey and juice of 1 lime in a blender or food processor. Puree until smooth. Pour into 8 (3-oz) popsicle molds and freeze. Serves 8.

Do you get discouraged when you

hear your telephone ring? Do you

avoid using your phone because

hearing difficulties make it hard to

understand the person on the other

end of the line? For many Americans

the telephone conversation – once

an important part of everyday life

– has become a thing of the past.

Because they can’t understand what

is said to them on the phone, they’re

often cut off from friends, family,

doctors and caregivers. Now, thanks

to innovative technology there is

finally a better way.

A simple idea… made possible

with sophisticated technology.

If you have trouble understanding

a call, the Captioning Telephone

can change your life. During a

phone call the words spoken

to you appear on the phone’s

screen – similar to closed

captioning on TV. So when

you make or receive a call, the

words spoken to you are not only

amplified by the phone, but scroll

across the phone so you can

listen while reading everything

that’s said to you. Each call is

routed through a call center, where

computer technology – aided by

a live representative – generates

voice-to-text translations. The

captioning is real-time, accurate

and readable. Your conversation

is private and the captioning

service doesn’t cost you a penny.

Captioned Telephone Service (CTS) is

regulated and funded by the Federal

Communications Commission (FCC)

and is designed exclusively for

individuals with hearing loss. In order

to use CTS in your home, you must

have standard telephone service and

high-speed Internet connectivity

where the phone will be used.

Callers do not need special

equipment or a captioning

phone in order to speak

with you.

Finally… a phone you

can use again. The

Captioning Telephone is

also packed with features

to help make phone calls easier.

The keypad has large, easy to use

buttons. You get adjustable volume

amplification along with the ability

to save captions for review later. It

even has an answering machine that

provides you with the captions of

each message.

See for yourself with our

exclusive home trial. Try the

Captioning Telephone in your

own home and if you are not

completely amazed, simply

return it within 60-days for a

refund of the product purchase

price. It even comes with a

5-year warranty.

The Captioning Telephone is intended for use by people with hearing loss. In purchasing a Captioning Telephone, you acknowledge

that it will be used by someone who cannot hear well over a traditional phone. 811
