4.2. Antenna pointing.

The installation of the ODU and antenna pointing must be done by qualified personnel, aware of the

safety regulations for personnel working at height outdoors, above roofs of buildings or on towers for telecommunications.

Totalconn Srl is not responsible for damages to persons and / or properties resulting from the

installation of the unit, external antennas and ODU.

We recommend:

• Place the antenna as high as possible to have a connection more efficiently.

• Place the ODU properly behind the antenna, making sure that all the four retaining clips are properly closed and that the device is aligned with the antenna.

• Check the optical visibility with the other antenna.

• Check for the presence of vegetation, the growth of which would impede the propagation of the radio link between the two points.

• In the absence of-sight allignment according to the angles specified by the radio project. This task can be difficult using parabolic antennas because the opening angle is very small.

WI4LINK offers a web interface modified, compared with ordinary equipment with mikrotik RouterOS. This interface is simplified so as to offer, and to allow to change only the information necessary to get

a good point to point link.

We suggest to use, for the sighting and the configuration, the interface WEBFIG, which you can reach

by connecting with a browser at the address: http://192.168.17.1/webfig

for the “master” device, and http://192.168.17.2/webfig

for the “remote” device, instead of the interface winbox.

When the device is turned on and the link is working, optimize the signal using the status page of the

apparatus, which appears as below. The screen is slightly different between the two devices, because one is configured as "master" and

the other as "remote", but it provides on both the same type of information.

In addition, the apparatus WI4LINK offers an analog output signal related to the pointing, on a BNC

connector.

This output has a voltage value proportional to the level of signal received by the device, according to the following table.

Page 14: Outdoor Wireless Bridge @17Ghz W4LINK - ServiceNet · • Indoor Unit or IDU: Gigabit Power Over Ethernet adapter (POE) • Outdoor unit or ODU • Parabolic antenna, directly connected,

The level can be measured with a meter to get an immediate visual information about the status of

pointing.

4.3. Configuration of WI4LINK

The operating system pre-installed on the apparatus is RouterOS, whose manual is available online at the following internet address: http://www.mikrotik.com/documentation.html

For the configuration of the apparatus is recommended to use the utility webfig, pre-installed. The

utility is based on the integrated web server on the apparatus, and therefore accessible to the IP

address of the apparatus itself.

Or use WinBox, which can be downloaded at this Internet address: http://www.mikrotik.com/download.html, or from our website in the download section:

http://www.wi4net.it/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=72&lang=it .

The guide for the use of WinBox can be found at this web address:

http://www.mikrotik.com/docs/ros/2.9/guide/winbox

The apparatus is provided with an IP address:

Master 192.168.17.1/24

Remote 192.168.17.2/24,

on Ether1 interface. The first address is set in the master, the second in the remote.

If you can not access the apparatus via its IP address, you can do so via winbox and MAC address. In this case, from winbox interface, you must select the MAC address of the device.

To access the configuration via webfig, you must set on your PC an address in the same subclass

(192.168.17.x netmask 255.255.255.0), and login to the system by entering the following

username and password (note the capital letter on password):

username: user password: User (only for testing with Webfig , admin password will be provided by email)

4.3.1. Setting the transmission power

In compliance with the regulations, in Italy, you MUST manually set the transmit power to limit the

EIRP under 100mw (20dbm) at antenna, as in the following:

country : italy frequency mode: superchannel

Tx Power: related to the used antenna:

Antenna type Tx Power

40cm, 35dbi 7dbm

65cm, 38,6dbi 4dbm

90cm, 41dbi 1dbm

The device contains a signal attenuator, which can be switched on or off via two webfig commands,

as in the figure. The units are preconfigured in factory with the attenuator switched on.

The main configuration parameters are accessible via webfig.

Webfig is a safety interface, and restricts editing apparatus to what is necessary to set up a point to

point link. We recommend using winbox instead webfig only if you are sure of what you are doing, and please

note that resetting the device to factory settings, power, channel and bridge connection will be automatically restored.

The attenuator, however, remains in the state of last setting.

The screen below shows the options that webfig provides for the configuration of the radio part of the

bridge to 17GHz. The fields are already configured to be able to have a high bandwidth, in the presence of a received

signal level of at least-82dB, with latencies around two milliseconds for the packets.

The security is demanded to the key of the NV2 Protocol, proprietary of Mikrotik.

17Ghz Channels

The Wi4Link apparatus is configured so as to define a series of channels between the frequencies of 17100Mhz and 17300Mhz, with different bandwidths.

This allows, on the same tower, to have more repeaters, without that these not interfere significantly, and to obtain high values of the signal/noise ratio while maintaining a reduced amplitude of the

channel. So, covering greater distances than an apparatus that uses the entire available bandwidth. The table that follows lists the channels defined on the apparatus. The same channels are defined

with different bandwidths, and for each channel are shown (approximately) the start and end

frequency. The 17GHz channels are obtained from the 2.4Ghz channels, using a frequency shifter that adds an

offset of 14850Mhz to the initial channel.

Note:

On mikrotik, unused modulations are replaced by '802.11G, that is 54mbps. Because of the channel, and modulation speed, the actual speed of each modulation is about 77% of the nominal.

An adaptive algorithm makes sure that the apparatus to automatically select the best modulations.

At each modulation corresponds a theoretical maximum bandwidth. In practice, the real bandwidth is less, because part of the available bandwidth is lost in the transmission protocol and in the control of

errors. In the absence of errors, the real bandwidth is expressed as a percentage of the theoretical

bandwidth (around 77%). In the presence of errors this value can be reduced greatly due to the retransmission of erroneous packets.

The apparatus allows to evaluate the amount of errors on the transmission with the parameters

TX/RX CCQ. These parameters are expressed the percentage of packets received correctly in both directions of the channel.

Low values of TX or RX CCQ are caused by wrong antenna pointing, by the presence of reflected signals together with those received, by the presence of obstacles, even small, within the ellipsoid of

Fresnel, from simple high distance, and at the frequency of 17GHz also from changes in the weather..

In case the TX or RX CCQ are less than 100%, it may be advisable to turn off the modulations of

higher order, from MCS15, until arriving to a situation with CCQ close to 100%. This helps to get more stability, and often much more bandwidth.
