Fr. Ma ’s Message Le ng God Be God It seems to me that Jesus would have made a great comedi‐an. He seemed to enjoy shocking and surprising people. So many of his stories had endings that turned people's ideas upside down. The Gospel story of the generous landowner which we hear from Ma hew (20:1‐7) on this 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time was surely one of those stories that suc‐ceeded in astonishing the people who first heard it. I hope that it might do the same thing for us. The parable of the landowner who paid all of the workers the same wage, no ma er when they started their day or how much they contributed can lead us down so many paths. Don't compare. Be grateful. Let God be God. Get rid of envy and resentment. Be content with your life. Trust God to give you what you really need. Let God be God. I think we can waste much of our lives figh ng God. This thought comes out in many different ways, but the common way is through dissa sfac on with our lives. We look at our lives, and then we look at the lives of others who seem to have it be er than ourselves. We wonder why we have to deal with so many problems, while it looks like other people are free of the worries that bother us so much. Why doesn't God change the way my life is going? But o en all we are looking at is the surface of life. We come to very hasty and shallow conclusions about things. We don't want to do the hard work of thinking more deeply about things. Reflec on takes effort and can't be done in a hurry. But reflec on and God‐awareness leads to wisdom, rather than just to thoughtless judgements. Father Richard Rohr, the founder of the Center for Ac on and Contempla on says, "This is how our contemporary culture seems to look at it: 1) Our culture no longer really values the inner journey, if it would be honest. 2) In fact, we ac vely avoid and fear it. 3) In most cases we no longer even have the tools to go inward because, 4) we are enam‐ored and entrapped in the outer self in the private edges of our private lives." We believe that our God is generous. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, the emphasis was on the wonderful for‐giveness of the father rather than on the sinfulness of the son. In like manner, the emphasis in today’s parable seems to be on the goodness of the landowner, rather than on the reac ons of those who thought they were cheated. Jesus wants us to know in our hearts that God is a loving and a generous God, and he urges us not to see things merely from a worldly perspec ve. Con nues:

Con nued:  In today's story the ones who worked all day were upset when the ones who worked for only one hour were given the same wages. They cried out, "These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day's burden and the heat". In a way, these work‐ers are correct. God did make them equal. In fact, in God's eyes we are all equal ‐ equally deserving of God's love and generosity. And yet, there is something in us that constantly tries to compare who we are and what we have with who others are and what they have. Any kind of comparison, which puts one person above another person, goes against the spirit of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The simple fact of the ma er is that we do not understand the mind and heart of God. "...my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord". Of course, the trick is to live with that reality instead of con‐stantly figh ng it. That is why the inner spiritual journey is one that is good for all of us to be on. If we live only on the surface, we will always be figh ng the apparent inequality of life, always wondering why our life is the way it is, con‐stantly looking at other people's lives, wishing we could have their lives instead of the ones we find so difficult to live. When we live only on the surface of life, we tend to see things and people from a limited point of view. No doubt about it ‐ today's Gospel calls us to see things from an en rely different point of view. May God grant us the grace to know and believe in our hearts that God's way is always the best way. Thank you to all who supported the good works of the Good Shepherd Sisters through their online auc on and fundraiser. Thank you for suppor ng those in our local community who are making a difference in peoples’ live. It is in giving that we receive.
