If it is his church than the gates of Hell will not prevail. The moment we start teaching our opinions and watering down his teaching than it becomes 'my' Church. And that is where the gates of Hell have their power. Keep this parish united to Christ in word and deed, Father Anthony

Keys to the Kingdom - Part 1

Greetings everyone,

We are all familiar with the passage from Matthew 16 when Jesus said,

"And I say to you, you are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church and the

gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it." There are different versions

of the name Peter: Greek=Petros, French=Pierre, Italian=Pietro, Latin=Petrus, and

Spanish=Pedro. The Aramaic is Cephas. They all mean the same thing 'stone'.

Now we all realize that a stone can symbolize a strong foundation for the

Catholic Church. It is not high and mighty but rather low and probably walked

upon. It is firm but breakable. Peter will remain strong in his faith for one reason,

because Jesus prayed directly for him. He is the only person that Jesus actually

prayed for by name. Jesus prayed that his faith would endure. Jesus did pray for

the future of his Church which indirectly includes you and me.

Sometimes we forget that stones can also be stumbling blocks for others.

Immediately following that passage Jesus will reprimand Peter for being the voice

of Satan. Remember that not all of the Popes were always saints. Some of them

did not accept the will of God in their lives. I imagine it is a very difficult position

to fill. I remember hearing how Saint Pope John Paul II would go to confession

every week. We should pray for our Pope that he be a vessel of love and truth for

us.

Notice that Jesus said that he will build 'his' Church. He never said that he

would build a church for Peter. He never said he would build a church for his

mother or John or James. Remember that important pronoun 'his' church. I want

this parish to be 'HIS' Church. If it is his church than the gates of Hell will not

prevail. The moment we start teaching our opinions and watering down his teaching

than it becomes 'my' Church. And that is where the gates of Hell have their

power.

Keep this parish united to Christ in word and deed,

Father Anthony

Rite of Election

The Rite of Election, presided over by the Bishop, is a major step in the faith journey of catechumens. In this Rite, which normally occurs on the First Sunday of Lent, the Church makes its “election”, chooses the catechumens who, up to this point, have spent much

time in formation to move on to the sacraments of initiation at Easter.

Let pray for our catechumens
