Promesas Bautismales: ¿Renuncias a Satanás?

Baptismal Promises: Do you reject Satan? During Lent, we prepare ourselves for public promises. The Elect of the Church will make those promises for the first time at the Easter Vigil just before they are baptized. Those of us already baptized will also renew our baptismal promises at the Easter Vigil. The first question all will be asked on that most holy of all nights is “Do you reject Satan?” In the early church, one publicly rejected Satan by facing west (where the sun set,) renouncing him, sometimes even spitting in that direction, as a sign that one was spitting in the devil’s face. Today we hear how Jesus rejected Satan by renouncing the power, the fame and the security that Satan offered. On Passion Sunday (Palm Sunday) we see where that renunciation leads Je-sus –to the powerlessness and death that are the way to his ever-lasting glory. No wonder we need an entire season to prepare ourselves to make those promises. It is serious stuff! Let us pray throughout the remainder of this Lenten season for the courage to keep our promises.

Readings for the Week of March 13, 2011Readings for the Week of March 13, 2011Readings for the Week of March 13, 2011Readings for the Week of March 13, 2011 Mar 13 = Gn 2:7-9; Gn 3:1-7; Rom 5:12-19; Mt 4:1-11 Like Adam and Eve, Jesus was tempted, but did not sin. Our sinfulness is acquitted through one man, Jesus Christ, in whom we are justified. Mar 14 = Lv 19:1-2,11-18; Ps 19: 8-10, 15; Mt 25:31-46 The command of the Lord is clear: love one another, for “what-ever you do to these least ones, you do it to me.” Mar 15 = Is 55:10-11; Ps 34:4-7,16,19; Mt 6:7-15 May God’s Spirit always inspire us how to pray and be open to the Word that the Father may be glorified. Mar 16 = Jon 3:1-10; Ps 51:3-4,12-13,18-19; Lk 11:29-32 Nineveh heard the preaching of Jonah and repented. The Word calls us to repentance as well. Mar 17 = Est C: 12, 14-16,23-25; Ps 138:1-3,7C-8; Mt & 7-12 If we petition in faith, we shall be heard, as was Esther. Mar 18 = Ez 18:21-28; Ps 130:1-8; Mt 5:20-26 The Lord forgives us in the conversion of our hearts and rejoices in the reconciliation of one to another. Mar 19 = 2 Sm 7:4-5a,12-14a,16;Rom 4:13-16-18,22; Mt 1:16-18-21,24a As heir of David and son of Joseph and Mary, Jesus brings forgiveness through the gift of faith

Catequesis Comunitaria

Community Catechesis

Temptation —What would Jesus do? 1st Sunday of Lent

Week of March 13, 2011

Listen to the Word (Matthew 4:1-11) As you heard the story of the temptation of Jesus, what particular words

did you notice? What line in this reading touched your heart?

Look into Your Life Question for Children: What do you plan to do during Lent this year as a way of showing you want to grow closer to Jesus? Question for Youth: When there is silence around you, how does it make you feel? How do you create times of quiet and reflection for you? Question for Adults: When you pause to be alone with God, what distracts and prevents you from dwelling in that solitude? The demands of life? TV? The Internet?

Activities for the home this week Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings: Point out to family members that Jesus was tempted just like we sometimes are, but he did not give in to temptation. Jesus was obedient to God's will. Lenten resolutions can help us choose God's will over our own. As a family talk about what Lenten resolutions each person has made. Write out these resolutions and put them inside the family Bible. Decide what you will do as a family to observe Lent this year. Choose a television program the family has watched or a story in the newspaper or a magazine. Look for modern temptations that cause people to do the wrong thing. Discuss with your family: What are some of the most difficult temptations people face today? What is the best way to deal with these temptations? Display the crucifix in a prominent place in your home. Gather around the crucifix and have each family member reflect on a temptation that he or she is faced with in his or her daily life. Ask God and Jesus to help us in saying "no" to the many temptations that we are confronted with each day. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the three principal practices of Lent. Discuss with your family what it means to fast or give something up for Lent. The Lenten practice of fasting is meaningful for children when it coincides with almsgiving. As a family, consider sharing a simple meal each week and then using the money saved to help a local charity like our St. Vincent De Paul or our Soup Ministry.

Toni’s Camp, a 3-day weekend retreat provides a safe environment and many activities geared to the spiritual, social and recreational needs of youth and adults with develop-mental disabilities. Make an Appeal contribution today and help insure the viability of these important programs which teach our faith and provide the opportunity for deeper involvement and growth as Catholics. Give conveniently and securely at www.archatl.com.

Remember that Annual Appeal Goals are mandatory. If we do not reach the goal the difference has to be paid out of the parish operations fund. On the other hand; once we reach the goal, any amount that exceeds the goal is returned to the parish 100%.

Stewardship: Thank you so much for your participation in the 2011 Archdioce-san Annual Appeal. We are very grateful that we have generously responded to the call to share our gifts with the church. Embracing the concept of Stewardship helps us understand that all that we are and all that we have is a gracious gift from God. Once we recog-nize the benevolence of God we also understand the need we have to give back to God by giving to the ministry of the Church. Out of that understanding comes our need to support the parish, the arch-diocese and the Church at large. Once again, thank you for your generous participation in the Annual Appeal. The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal for 2011 continues and, with the shift in timing this year, we have not yet fulfilled our commit-ment for 2010. We encourage all to view these as the two different campaigns that they are. If you have not, as yet, contributed to the 2010 Appeal, please put whatever you are able to donate in a plain envelope and either drop it in the collection basket or send it to the parish office as soon as possible. The 2011 Appeal is in the pledge stage where you are asked to prayerfully consider what you can contribute and fulfill that pledge sometime in the coming year. Consider now, contribute later. This coming year will prove to be an exciting one for the Chris-tian Community of Our Lady of LaSalette. We will soon be launch-ing our capital campaign to fund the building of our new church and to define our program for the future of our community. Start thinking about how you can help with your time and talent. We’ll talk treas-ure later. Remember, we are all in this together.

We need your help Archbishop’s Annual Appeal-2010 If you have not yet contributed, please do so.

Henry Nouwen

Today’s special collection is a combination of three former second collections: The Black and Indian Missions, begun in 1884, supports evangelization programs in almost every diocese in the country. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal funds a wide range of essential pastoral activities in mission dioceses with special emphasis on evangelization, religious education, and ministry training. The Mission Cooperative Collection is an opportunity for the archdiocese to financially assist those mis-sionaries, (arch)dioceses, and religious orders from around the globe who are ministering to the poor and that so desperately need aid. Please be generous!
