LENTEN REGULATIONS ON FAST AND ABSTINENCE

Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years of age or older. Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal. MOUNT CARMEL APARTMENTS We are looking for people who are parishioners or resi-dents of the apartments to serve on a Board of Directors for the apartment complex. Meetings are held several times a year. If you are interested and/or need more infor-mation, please see Monsignor Pedone or contact Cheryl Berthiaume, the Chair of the Board, at [email protected].

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Friends,

I write to update you on the continuing work on the façade of Mount Carmel church. The membrane covering the façade has separated in several places exposing the ped-iment to water. The contractor is working to re-anchor it. Also, the architect has determined that the building now needs “through bolts” to attach more securely the façade to the building. However, this will further damage the art work in the back of the choir loft, which I had hoped to try to salvage. The interior of the church still poses a danger to anyone entering and is not safe. We have had to borrow over $200,000 to pay for the work on the façade because we do not have the money and have received none from any other sources. I am grateful to the members of the Mount Carmel Proper-ty Committee as they continue to deliberate over the fu-ture of the buildings and property on the Mount Carmel campus. March 16, 2017

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock.” —Rev 3:20

How have we responded to the gospel call to serve Jesus through the poor and vulnerable? It is for this reason that we join with parishes around the country in the National Collec-tion for Catholic Relief Services on the weekend of April 2. This collection reminds us that through your generosity, you can help ease the burdens of our brothers and sisters around the globe.

Thanks to your donation, you can

alleviate suffering and provide assistance to people in need

through the international Catholic humanitarian agency,

Catholic Relief Services (CRS)

supply outreach and pastoral care to refugees, migrants,

and travelers

provide assistance to victims of natural disasters and other

emergencies around the world through the Holy Father’s

Relief Fund

advocate for poor and vulnerable people and for interna-

tional justice and peace

actively help victims of human trafficking and refugees by

providing resettlement services and public policy advocacy

For example, in Niger, changes in climate in western Africa are

adversely affecting poor and rural farmers. No matter how hard

these farmers work, droughts are shortening the rainy season,

leaving harvests too small to support families and communities.

Your support of CRS is helping connect businesses that provide

drought-resistant seeds to these communities. These new rela-

tionships are providing hope to these communities for a sustain-

able future.

Please be generous in the Catholic Relief Services Collection in

your parish. By participating in this collection, you are respond-

ing to Jesus in disguise in some of the most marginalized com-

munities in our world.

With every prayerful best wish, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Robert J. McManus

Bishop of Worcester

PARTNERS IN CHARITY

The Worcester Diocesan Annual Partners in Charity Appeal

has begun. This appeal is a vital lifeline for many throughout

the Diocese and allows our members to assist in the Church’s

mission. We are on our way toward our $50,000 goal. $1,385

has been sent directly to the Chancery. Many of you have re-

ceived a letter and a donation envelope from the Chancery.

You may return it to the Chancery or to us either by mail or by

depositing it in the basket during the Masses.

Vera Novick and Julie Tufano have graciously accepted to be

co-chairs again this year and will be assisted by the Mount Car-

mel Council Knights of Columbus. Our “in-pew” solicitation

will be held the weekend of March 25th and 26th. Please prayer-

fully consider your gift to this very important appeal which is a

lifeline to so many.

We encourage you to be generous and prayerfully consider

making a pledge. Thank you for your support of this worthy

cause.

5-Year CORI Renewals

As we recently publicized, the Safe Environment regu-

lations stipulate that CORI checks need to be renewed

every 5 years in order for parish staff and volunteers

to continue their service. A list of people who had

their

CORI checks in 2012 will be placed on the vestibule

bulletin board next weekend—March 25 & 26. If your

name is on the list, contact Ginny Lelakis at 508-792-

2750 and she will arrange for the renewal. Thank you

PREPARING FOR AND CELEBRATING THE

SCRUTINIES

We, the baptized, are a welcoming and supportive community.

On the first Sunday of Lent we celebrated the Rite of Sending

for our Catechumen, Jessica Geraway. On the 3rd, 4th, and

5th Sundays of Lent, we, together with the Jessica, the elect,

will participate in rites called the Scrutinies. To "scrutinize"

means to take a careful look at something. For us it means

Healing any weakness or sin, Strengthening what is good, and

“holding fast to Christ”. We look at our life to see where

change and growth are needed. In order to change and grow,

we need to recognize and name the temptations with which we

struggle -- the things that get in the way of our relationships --

and pray for God to strengthen us. Some of these faults and

attitudes are subtle and tough to dislodge, but we know we

can with God's help and the prayerful support of our commu-

nity. The community does not scrutinize the catechumens; the

catechumens scrutinize their own lives and allow God to scru-

tinize them and to heal them. Jessica has experienced ac-

ceptance, affirmation and trust within our parish community.

While we are praying for her, she will be praying for us. Scru-

tinies are proclamations of hope and trust of God's help, heal-

ing, and power. They are a promise of us as a community to

live together in the power of the Holy Spirit. Scrutinies

strengthen us in Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life.

Healing Prayer of Surrender

Dear Lord Jesus, it is my will to surrender to you everything

that I am and everything that I’m striving to be. I open the

deepest recesses of my heart and invite your Holy Spirit to

dwell inside of me.

I offer you my life, heart, mind, body, soul, spirit, all my hopes,

plans and dreams. I surrender to you my past, present and fu-

ture problems, habits, character defects, attitudes, livelihood,

resources, finances, medical coverage, occupation and all my

relationships.

I give you my health, physical appearance, disabilities, family,

marriage, children and friendships. I ask you to take Lordship

over every aspect of my life. I surrender to you all my hurt,

pain, worry, doubt, fear and anxiety, and I ask you to wash me

clean.

I release everything into your compassionate care. Please speak

to me clearly, Lord. Open my ears to hear your voice. Open my

heart to commune with you more deeply. I want to feel your

loving embrace. Open the doors that need to be opened and

close the doors that need to be closed. Please set my feet upon

the straight and narrow road that leads to everlasting life.

Amen.

Lenten Prayer

O Jesus, Who by reason of Thy burning love for

us hast willed to be crucified and to shed Thy

Most Precious Blood for the redemption and sal-

vation of our souls, look down upon us here

gathered together in remembrance of Thy most sorrow-

ful Passion and Death, fully trusting in Thy mercy;

cleanse us from sin by Thy grace, sanctify our toil, give

unto us and unto all those who are dear to us our daily

bread, sweeten our sufferings, bless our families, and to

the nations so sorely afflicted, grant Thy peace, which is

the only true peace, so that by obeying Thy command-

ments we may come at last to the glory of Heaven.

Amen
