Today is the anniversary of the great miracle of the sun at Fatima (October 13, 1917) and Pope Francis has arranged for the original 1920 image of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima to be brought to Rome for the consecration ceremony. At Fatima, Mary spoke to the three shepherd children about many things: she promised a miracle in October, she asked the children to do penance and pray the rosary for sinners, and she asked that the priests build a church on the site of her apparition. In today’s Gospel, we see that Jesus gives a similar message. He performs a miracle of healing for the ten lepers. We see that Jesus encourages grateful prayer when He commends the one leper who “returned to give thanks to God.” (Luke 17:18) We also see that, like Mary, Jesus acknowledged the legitimate religious authorities: the priests. Jesus told the lepers to “go, show yourselves the priests” of the Jewish temple who had the sacred duty of authenticating cures. Mary in her many apparitions throughout the world always insisted on submission to the priests of the church. Mary usually had some request or message or secret that had to be delivered to the priests or to the bishop or to the pope by the visionary. Those who saw the great apparitions of Mary were always told to “go to the priests”: Juan Diego, St. Catherine Labouré, St. Bernadette, and the children of Fatima, etc.) Along with the pope, let us entrust ourselves to the Immaculate Heart of our Mother Mary who shows us the way to peace in the world: prayer, penance and obedience to Church!

From the Pastor’s Laptop If you feel a little holier today, it is

probably because today Pope Francis will be consecrating the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Mary in her many apparitions throughout the

world always insisted on submission to the priests of the church.

Religious Education Tough Catholic Questions on the Bible...

Are the stories in the Bible true? This question has been adapted from the book, “Did Adam and Eve Have Belly Buttons?” by Matthew Pinto Yes, all the stories in the Bible are true. This does not mean, however, that each and every biblical story is intended to be read as history. The parables of Jesus, for example, are “true” in that they contain life-changing truths that can lead us to a deeper understanding of God and the life of repentance and love He is calling us to live. But this does not imply that the events described in the parables actually occurred. The disciples of Jesus, upon hearing these stories firsthand, likely would not have been confused on this point; they understood He was conveying profound truths through a hypothetical or fictional narrative. That said, there are many events described in the Bible that are clearly intended to be understood historically—i.e., they really happened. The Bible should not be seen as a single book written in a single literary style; rather, it is as a collection of writings of various genres. Whether a particular story or passage is history in the true sense, then, depends on the context and the style employed by the writer. Ultimately, we must always read the Bible in accordance with Sacred Tradition, as both form “a single deposit of faith” and with the guidance of the Magisterium (see CCC 85).

Parish Stewardship — a way of life

Profiles in Stewardship by Debbie Greco

FOCUS ON LEADERSHIP: Plaza Refreshments are served today by our Plaza Refreshment Volunteers. Please thank them for their service.

Kavitha Kumar became a catechist last year for a Grade 2 class preparing for their First Confessions. She has a wonderful way of creating a sacred environment in her classroom, enhancing the lessons with statues and little replicas of the sacred vessels that her students can see and touch. Kavitha has been trained in a wonderful curriculum called Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and incorporates many of the ideas into her classroom. This year, Kavitha is catechist for a class of Grade 5 students who are preparing to make their F irst Holy Communion and the creative reverence with which she shares the faith is a great gift. Kavitha and her husband Remo, along with their three children, Abishek, Frances and Freddy took a trip to the Holy Land last summer and came back with many beautiful photos and stories that also enrich her teaching. Kavitha walks in the footsteps of Jesus, and by her life and teaching is helping many others to follow God. St . Francis De Sa les says Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength.” This, to me is an apt description of Kavitha. Our parish is very blessed by her generous stewardship of God’s gifts.

HOLY MASS AT THE SHRINE OF "OUR LADY OF BONARIA" Sunday, 22 September 2013 part I

Today the desire to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Bonaria, that I had announced in St Peter’s Square before the summer began, has come true. 1. I have come to share with you the joys and hopes, the struggles and

responsibilities, the ideals and aspirations of your island, and to strengthen you in the faith. Here in Cagliari, as in all Sardinia, there is no lack of difficulties — there are so many — problems and concerns. I am thinking especially of the lack of work and of job insecurity, and therefore of uncertainty about the future. Your beautiful region of Sardinia has long suffered from many situations of poverty, which have been worsened by its condition as an island. The faithful collaboration of everyone, along

with the responsible commitment of institutions — including the Church — is necessary in order to guarantee that fundamental rights are accorded to persons and to families, and in order to foster a more stable and fraternal society. The right to work, the right to bring home bread, bread earned through work must be guaranteed! I am close to you! I am close to you, I remember you in prayer and I encourage you to persevere in bearing witness to the human and Christian values that are so deeply rooted in the faith and history of this land and of its people. May you always keep the light of hope burning! 2. I have come among you to place myself, together with you, at the feet of Our Lady, who gives us her Son. I am well aware that Mary, our Mother, is very much in your hearts, as this Shrine testifies, to which many generations of Sardinians have climbed — and will continue to climb! — in order to invoke the protection of Our Lady of Bonaria, Principal Patroness of the Island. Here you bring the joys and sufferings of this land, of your families, and even of those of its children who live far away, who have left with great pain and longing, in order to find work and a future for themselves and for those who are dear to them. Today, we who gather here want thank Mary, because she is always near to us. We want to renew our trust and our love for her. The first Reading we heard shows us Mary in prayer, in the Upper Room, together with the Apostles. Mary prays, she prays together with the community of the disciples, and she teaches us to have complete trust in God and in his mercy. This is the power of prayer! Let us never tire of knocking at God's door. Everyday through Mary let us carry our entire life to God's heart! Knock at the door of God's heart! In the Gospel, however, we take in Jesus’ last gaze upon his Mother (cf. Jn 19:25-27). From the Cross, Jesus looks at his Mother and entrusts her to the Apostle John, saying: This is your son. We are all present in John, even us, and Jesus’ look of love entrusts us to the maternal care of the Mother. Mary would have remembered another look of love, when she was a girl: the gaze of God the Father, who looked upon her humility, her littleness. Mary teaches us that God does not abandon us; he can do great things even with our weaknesses. Let us trust in him! Let us knock at the door of his heart!
