We kick things off the week of Thanksgiving from November 26-28. There is a Lowcountry Boat Cruise at the River Park on Wednesday, November 26 followed by a special holiday Member Mingle Bonfire complete with great food, kid crafts, lawn games and dancing on the Deck to the music of our favorite DJ. The next day, we will be serving our popular Thanksgiving Day Buffet, which is the largest holiday dinner that we host each year with seating at 12:30 and 2:30pm. On Friday, November 28, the 7th Annual 5K Turkey Trot race begins at 8am and shortly after the race, Andrew Rice is conducting a Junior Golf Camp for children between the ages of 7-15. To register for the golf camp, please call Andrew at 843.815.8446. That afternoon, you might consider a Boat Cruise on the Okatie River to view the sunset with Captain Eric from 3-5pm. What a great way to end the day.

Congratulations once again to the South Team for making it two in a row at the 10th Annual North-South Challenge Cup. The series has certainly tightened with the North now leading the South 6 to 4. Please mark your calendars for several other upcoming member tournaments. The Senior Club Championship, November 7 & 8, The “Haig” (2-day Member-Member), November 14 & 15 and the Club Challenge, on December 4 & 6.

The Golf Shop will once again be hosting its Holiday Wine & Cheese Party and Balloon Sale on Thursday, December 11 from 5-7pm. We encourage everyone to stop by and take advantage of some terrific pricing on last minute items for your holiday gift list.

Our December holiday events will be filled with all the joy and excitement this season has to offer beginning with a Holiday Shopping Expo in the Clubhouse Foyer with Light Hors d’oeuvres and Champagne on Tuesday, December 2. On Sunday, December 7 our Annual Toys for Tots Member Mingle, followed by a Christmas Luncheon and Ornament Exchange on Tuesday, December 9. The Celebration of Chanukah Dinner will be held on Thursday December 18. Santa is scheduled to visit Berkeley Hall for our Santa Brunch on Sunday, December 21 and the Annual Family Bonfire will take place at the River Park on Tuesday, December 23. We hope you and your family will be able to attend.

Finally, our Annual Meeting will be held on Friday, December 12 at 4pm. New Members will be elected to the Board and we will be reporting on the Club’s performance and accomplishments in 2014.

On behalf of myself and the entire Staff, we would like to wish you and your family a safe and joyful holiday season.

The ARB Report by Wendy Wagner, Architectural Review Board Administrator

2014 has proven to be another active year of new construction at Berkeley Hall. Since the beginning of this year, 9 homes have been completed, construction has begun on 12 more and the ARB is reviewing 14 new plans for final approval. This brings the total

numberofhomescompletedandoccupiedto283-abuildoutof51%. In addition, there are 17 new homes currently under construction.

Beginning January 1, there will be some changes to our fee structure. The submittal fee for new construction has been increased to $5,000 and payable with your first ARB submission for review. This fee is used to offset the administrative costs of the architect and inspectors that the ARB must employee during the construction of each home. The cost of a new mailbox installed at the end of construction is included in the submission fee. Both the builder deposit of $10,000 and owner deposit of $6,500 remain the same. The $1,000 street use fee has been eliminated.

The ARB office welcomes Members to stop by or call me at 843.825.8443 or email [email protected] with any questions or concerns you would like to bring to the ARB. If you have just purchased your lot or home in Berkeley Hall, please contact the ARB for a copy of the ARB Standards.

Charity Cup Raises Over $140,000The 2014 Charity Cup was held during Memorial Day Weekend this year, and Berkeley Hall took the opportunity to honor our local heroes: Active Duty Military, First Responders, and Police. Berkeley Hall Members and local businesses teamed up to invite more than 20 of these local heroes to join us for a weekend of golf, fun, and camaraderie. What better way to spend Memorial Weekend!

The Charity Cup event provided Berkeley Hall residents and friends an opportunity to make a difference for local charities as well as honor our local heroes. The weekend included an opening cocktail party, golf tournament, silent and live auctions, culminating with a grand gala event, on Saturday evening. Over $140,000 was raised which will be used to support projects of local not for profit organizations that address the basic human needs of the greater Bluffton Community, especially those who are most vulnerable.

The Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation (BHCF) Grants Committee has received applications from 16 local charities for the 2014 grant cycle. The committee’s deep and thoughtful evaluations continue as they prepare recommendations for the consideration of Berkeley Hall’s Board of Directors. In the next Berkeley Hall Experience, we will share information on review process and the Board’s approvals. We hope to hold a member mingle event in mid-November bringing representatives from the charities we support to meet with you, their benefactors. More information on that will be forthcoming.

Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation Grants Now Exceed $500,000

Since 2008, the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation has donated nearly $350,000 to local charities. With the allocation approved for the 2014 grant cycle, the BHCF grants to local charities will exceed $500,000. That is a half a million dollars that has and will help vulnerable and low income families, children, adults, veterans, and the elderly to lead more successful, comfortable and productive lives.

Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation Annual AppealAnd now, as you begin to plan your year-end charitable contributions, we ask that you consider the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation. Your tax deductible contribution to BHCF will enable these programs and many others to continue and flourish in their ability to reach the more than 1,400 people living in poverty in greater Bluffton.

Thank you for your generosity and the spirit of giving you bring to the Berkeley Hall Community. Warm wishes to you and your family this holiday season!

Members Tour Italy with Andrew & Terry Rice

Andrew Rice, Director of Instruction at the Practice and Learning Center, and his wife Terri escorted 7 couples from Berkeley Hall on an 8-day trip to Northern Italy. Members who attended the trip included Art & Linda Arns; Rich & Theresa Forde, Brian & Ginger Hayden, John & Sherry Langhorne, Ric & Terri Savoury, Bob & Mary Knighton and Steve & Sonja Southern. They spent the first three nights in the gorgeous and breathtaking Grand Hotel Tremezzo situated on the banks of Lake Como. While there, they played golf at a mountain golf course called Menaggio, toured the ancient city of Como and spent an amazing afternoon in the famous town of Bellagio. They continued their travels to the land of Amarone, and stayed at the intimate Hotel Cordevigo. In addition to playing golf in Amarone and touring Verona, they attended a cooking school, and the men prepared a delicious meal for the ladies. The trip included an abundance of laughter, singing on the bus late into the night, drinking awesome wines and eating fine Italian cuisine. Every trip that Andrew and Terri have organized has turned out to be an unforgettable experience for our Members.

Monday, Nov.3 at 3pm, Ladies’ Locker RoomThe Other Room by Kim Triedman

Kim Triedman’s The Other Room is a gorgeous meditation on what the death of a child can do to a family that prefers silence over exhibition. With her pristine sentences, she depicts howeven the simplest of moments can stretch the lives of the survivors dangerously thin. The book brims with yearling, circling both

the reckless and selfish sides of love and grief until the novel reaches a fever pitch. This is the true work of a poet enriching every possibility of narrative. ~ Amazon.com

Are Crunches and Sit-Ups Hurting Your Golf Game?

by Doug Weary, MS Exercise Physiology, NSCA-CPT and TPICGFI

Good posture is synonymous with good golf. One of the first things that a teaching pro will discuss with their students is the importance of maintaining good posture.

In picture # 1, Doug Weary illustrates the C-Posture that is typically seen on the golf course. Notice in his address position, how his upper back and shoulders are rounded and slumping forward. From this set-up, it’s very difficult for him to maintain his posture throughout the backswing without keeping his swing plane short and wide. Compare this to a more up-right and relaxed athletic pos-

ture he illustrates in picture #2. From this position, Doug can make a full shoulder turn and properly set the club at the top of his backswing.

Perhaps all of those crunches and sit-ups you’ve been doing may be contributing to bad posture on the golf course. Compare the curve in Doug’s back (illustration # 3) while he performs a crunch to the curve of his back in the C-Posture. Now consider all the other activities we perform during the day that are done in a hunched over position that continues to reinforce bad posture when playing golf.

We suggest that if you want to tone your abdominals, you perform planks and stability ball rollouts rather than crunches and sit-ups. This simple change in exercises may lead to an overall improvement to your golf game. Speak to one of our Fitness Center Trainers to learn more about exercises that are not only good for your body, but your golf game.

Austin Ernst wins her first LPGA Title at the Portland Classic

The Portland Classic was Austin’s first LPGA win on the LPGA Tour, beating I.K. Kim on the first hole of sudden death. This win was her first top 10 finish of the 2014 season. The Portland Classic was held at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club, in Portland, Ore. and is one golf course that she has had success at in the past. In the same event last year she shot a 62 and finished tied for ninth.

Austin joined Berkeley Hall this past winter as an Aspiring Professional in preparation for her second season on the LPGA Tour. As a freshman at LSU, she won the NCAA Individual Championship in 2012, and followed that up with an All-American season her sophomore year before deciding to join the LPGA. She resides in Seneca, S.C., where her father Mark is the General Manager and Head Golf Professional at Cross Creek Plantation Golf and Country Club.

STOP PULLING YOUR LEFT ARM INTO IMPACT AND START TURNING IT

To fix your chronic slicing, use left-arm action to square up the face at impact.

THE PROBLEMFrom the top of the swing you bring the club down and through the ball with an aggressive pull of left arm. This mistake fails to get the clubface square through impact, causing weak slices and poor contact. Your distance suffers because you’re not compressing the ball, and your accuracy is poor as well. Pulling usually puts you in a position where the back of your left hand faces well right of the target. This causes the clubface to be open. You need to be in a position where the back of your left hand is facing the target at impact, which squares the clubface.

THE SOLUTIONTo improve the quality of your contact and hit the ball longer and straighter, you must stop pulling your left arm and instead allow it to rotate through the impact area. Here’s how:

STEP 1During your backswing, don’t just lift the club up. Instead, turn your shoulders and gently rotate your left arm (upper arm and forearm) in a clockwise direction. The clubface should also rotate in the same direction so it opens a bit.

STEP 2As you swing the club down from the top, begin rotating your left arm in the opposite (counterclockwise) direction so that the clubface slowly begins to rotate back to square.

STEP 3At impact, get your left forearm and the back of your left hand facing the target – this is your key to get the clubface square. You should feel the back of your left hand turning down toward the ground a bit, which will help you compress the ball against the clubface.

STEP 4As you swing past impact, allow your left arm to continue to rotate so that the knuckles on your left hand turn towards the ground. This is how the majority of great players hit the ball, and it’s how you should too.

This month, I’d like to touch on the mental and physical side of the game and give you something to evaluate when considering your reaction to your various shots on the course. It’s normal for golfers to set high standards for themselves as they work to improve their games. However, high standards

can begin to corrupt your mental approach if you can only be satisfied with a perfect shot followed by a perfect outcome. Accepting nothing less that perfection is not a recipe for cultivating a positive attitude.

Consider the fact that during every round of golf, every shot you play can only result in one of four outcomes as illustrated in the chart below.

We can all deal with quadrant #1 and we should be upset with quadrant #4, but how do you respond to quadrants #2 and #3? When playing golf we all prepare and work toward good shots and good results, yet we know that will never always be the case. In fact, there has never been a round of golf played where every shot would fit into quadrant #1. We will always en-counter adversity at some point and need to accept less than perfect results. The perfectionist accepts only quadrant #1 - that quickly leads to frustration and a very unhappy and disgruntled golfer.

I am not advocating that as golfers we should never get upset - quadrant 4 will take care of that. I do believe however, that with a better understanding of the big picture, we must learn to accept less than stellar shots that work out (quadrant 3) and good shots that don’t (quadrant 2) as part of the game that we play. When you can do that you are growing and improving, as a golfer.

Pre-Round StretchingQ.) “What stretching exercises should I perform before I play?” A.) Good stretches to warm-up before the round will work the entire body and take it through movement patterns that prepare you for the stressors that it will endure during the round.

Derek Lemire, Director of Spa & Fitness Center demonstrates how to properly stretch our body before going out to play a round of golf.

These moves ARE NOT recommended in your pre-round warm-up:

• Bounce in Forward FlexionThis motion puts you in bad flexion posture, reduc-es the activity of the flexor muscles and can actually stiffen your back.

• Club Behind Back and Rotate (Sequencing)

A definite no-no! This old favorite can add sway to your swing and poor shoulder position in rotation can cause muscular strains.

• Swing Multiple ClubsThis method of warming up can lead to compensatory movements in arms, altered proprioception (balance), altered weight control, overswinging, a reverse C and increased potential for a reverse pivot.

These moves ARE recommended in your pre-round warm-up:

• Hip, Trunk and Shoulder StretchThis covers most areas. When you do this get into a lunge position, maintain upright posture, suck in lower abdominals and bend trunk into side of forward leg. Switch and do the other side.

• Core Stability and RotationLeave the club out of this one. Assume an athletic stance, rotate upper body with no motion below. Keep the elbows at your rib cage while feeling tension between inside thigh and lower abdominals.

• Cross Over Hip Drill (My Favorite)

For this exercise cross the right elbow to the left knee. Gradually increase speed as you go and do this for 30 seconds on one side before switching.

Keep in mind that these warm-up exercises are the basics. Time is always a factor and these three exercises shouldn’t take you more than five minutes. If you’re interested in peak performance it’s five minutes very well spent. Thanks for the tips Derek!

As the fall season gives way to winter-like temperatures, it signals a change in golf course management activities that can affect one’s game and the conditions found on the course.

In many regions of the country, golfers occasionally face frost de-lays in the winter, thus pushing back starting tee times. When frost is present, golf course superintendents delay play until the frost has melted. This is done to prevent damage that affects the quality of the playing surface and could potentially be very expensive to repair. The following article published by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) expresses the significance of frost in upholding a pristine golf course such as Berkeley Hall.

Frost delays

How can a footprint be a killer? When it’s a footprint made on a putting surface that is covered with frost. It’s hard to believe that simply walking across a golf green cov-ered with frost can cause so much damage, but the proof will be there in a few days as the turfgrass dies and leaves a trail of brown footprints. That’s why most courses will delay starting times until the frost has melted. And it’s also why golfers who appreciate a quality putting sur-face will be patient during frost delays.

Greens are fragile. The putting surface, or green, is an extremely fragile environment that must be managed carefully and profession-ally. Remember that every green is a collection of millions of individual grass plants, each of which is a delicate living thing. Obviously, Mother Nature never meant for these plants to be maintained at 3/16 or even 1/8 of an inch for prolonged periods. This stress makes greens con-stantly vulnerable to attacks from insects, disease, heat, drought, cold - and frost.

Frost is essentially frozen dew. It can form when the temperature (or wind chill) is near or below the freezing point. The ice crystals that form on the outside of the plant can also harden or even freeze the cell structure of the plant. When frosted, the normally resilient plant cells become brittle and are easily crushed. When the cell membranes are damaged, the plant loses its ability to function normally. It’s not much different than cracking an egg. Once the shell is broken, you can’t put it back together.

Although you won’t see any immediate damage if you walk on frosted turf, the proof will emerge within 48 to 72 hours as the leaves die and turn brown. And, since just one foursome can leave several hundred footprints on each green, the damage can be very extensive. A short delay while the frost melts can preserve the quality of the greens, pre-vent needless repairs and may even save you a few strokes the next time you play. ~ Reprint from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA)

Understanding Frost Delaysby Danny Malone, Certified Golf Course Superintendent

Cool Season Flower Planting by Kayne Hoecht, Community Maintenance Supervisor

As the temperatures cool and most plants prepare to go dormant, it’s time for us to remove our warm season annual flowers and plant new flowers to last for the next six months. Out of the thirteen thousand plants to be installed this year, a majority of them are from the Nature and the Penny series. The Nature series is a considered a breeding cross of viola and a pansy. This breeding process has created a plant that has the best char-acteristics of a pansy and a viola. This breeding equates to a plant that is more prolific than a pansy, is more compact than a pansy, and has a larger bloom than a viola. The developer of this series boasts a plant that is quick to rebound from rains and frost. From the nature series, you will see a few different colors planted throughout landscape, with the standout color being Rose Picotee. The depend-able Penny series viola will also be used in many garden areas, with Denim Jumpup being a favorite of the viola types we use, because of the bold impact of its blue color. To add some variation, we always plant some foliage material such as kale or mustard. This year, we are using a proven success from last season, which was an ornamental Kale of the Songbird series. Songbird Kale has a wavy, upright leaf that drains off moisture well and has a compact habit. Songbird is also much slower to go to seed in the spring (also known as “bolting.”) A plant that is slow to bolt is important because when bolting occurs, seeds are forming and the life cycle is coming to an end. Most of these ornamental foliage plants will bolt early spring, prior to the desired duration, which would be lasting until we install summer time annuals.

Oyster Roasts are a Winter Ritual in the Lowcountry

Attending a Lowcountry Oyster Roast is a ritual in the winter for any true southerner, - whether you are a native or transplant. Have you ever considered how the oysters get from the marsh to the shuckin’ table? Well, coastal Carolinians have been harvesting oysters for thousands of years. Ancient Shell Middens, found along backwater creeks, are evidence of Native Americans’ appetite for

this saltmarsh delicacy. Southern planters considered serving oysters – prepared in myriad ways - the only way to impress northern visitors. It’s said that Czar Nicholas insisted on being served Carolina oysters during his reign.

This year, the season began in mid-September and runs through April. Local watermen, clad in heavy boots and thick gloves, take their bateaus or skiffs up into the oyster beds between mid and low tide. Using a mallet or oyster rake, large clumps of the gray and craggy filter feeding bivalve are broken off. Back at the dock, the harvest is rinsed, then divided into those to be shucked and those that will end up at your oyster roast.

Oysters are only as good as the water in which they grow. It is imperative that we protect and maintain our pristine estuarine environment to ensure the quality of our oysters. We invite you to tour the Okatie River and observe the impressive oyster beds, with Eric Burns, our Master Captain and Certified Naturalist with Marshgrass Adventures. Please remember to bring along your binoculars!
