Improvements at the Highway 169 interchanges at 96th and 108th Streets have been fully funded by the Missouri Department of Transportation and the City of Kansas City. Those interchanges lie in the midst of more than 1,500 acres of undeveloped land on both sides of the highway that are prime for development. Let’s put the First and Second Creek project in some kind of perspective. We have to start talking about growth and development in the Northland. No one else is. Everybody needs to take a look at what has unwittingly become Kansas City’s best-kept secret. The best economic news in the area in recent memory came recently when Ford Motor Co. announced it will invest more than $1 billion to update the Claycomo assembly plant, and hire an additional 1,600 workers when the update is complete. That’s great news in a sluggish economy. It got a lot of press, and deservedly so. But there is more good stuff about future growth and development in the Northland that has gotten little if any media attention. The First and Second Creek watersheds development is one of them, and it will be huge. It includes nearly 15,000 acres of undeveloped land, about the size of Liberty. Much of it lies in Platte County, but it spills over into Clay County. This plan was envisioned as far back as the 1960s when Kansas City annexed it. The city council has approved funding for that, up to $45 million, and the work will begin early next year.

It is estimated to take up to 20 years to develop, but anyone in the development business knows that once activity like this begins, things can move quickly. What remains to be completed is a development plan that will provide a good mix of residential and commercial. It will increase the population of the Northland by an estimated 130,000 people and provide up to $100 million a year in new sales revenue for Kansas City. There’s more. The Shoal Creek Valley development was over 3,000 acres and was a success story that went way beyond anyone’s initial imagination and it’s still growing. Around the Northland

The City of Riverside joined Briarcliff Realty and members of the community for a groundbreaking on the new Riverside Horizons Development Tuesday, October 18th. Briarcliff Development said construction would begin this year on an estimated $12 million plan, including 25 acres of lakes, three miles of tree-lined canals and land set aside for public use and recreational purposes that is projected to connect to the Missouri River Trail.

SAVE THE DATE!It’s only November, but before you know it, the Annual Banquet will be upon us. The

evening banquet will be Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Argosy Casino Hotel & Spa. This event is to celebrate the Chamber’s

accomplishments for 2011. One highlight of the evening is the presentation of the

Northlander of the Year award. Corporate tables (seats 10) sponsorships will be

available for $750 and individual seat are $65.

October Luncheon: Ed_cation: All That’s Missing Is U!Northland school superintendents and higher education representatives gathered for the annual Education Leaders Luncheon, on Tuesday, September 13th, at the Chamber office. This discussion brought to light the successes and challenges that affect all levels of education. The committee chose three of the Northland Superintendents to represent the group and the top three themes that came out of the September lunch. Dr. Dennis Fisher, Park Hill School District, Dr. Mike Reik, Platte County R-3 School District and Dr. Todd White, North Kansas City Schools presented to the NRCC membership on Tuesday, October 18th at Black On Burlington. The luncheon was a huge success and motivated us to think creatively about Northland education. A huge thank you goes out to Morgan Hunter Education Division and Louie Scimeca for sponsoring the luncheon.

cont’d from front page: Second Creek project, and you have potential growth that can hardly be equaled in the metro area. This kind of growth has been part of the Northland landscape for well over a decade, and it happened with little fanfare. Horizons is another excitringdevelopment project in the Northland. Lead by Briarcliff Development Co, this 260-acre site will be home for a projected 5,900 jobs over the next generation. In Platte County, the KCI TIF plan has also given Northlanders something to crow about. It was created in 1999, when there was no existing business within its boundaries. By 2009, there were 60, including Wal-Mart and Lowe’s, Shoppes on the Boardwalk and the Tiffany Springs Market Center. Then there is Zona Rosa that has become a new and exciting Northland destination point. It continues to grow. The Northland has also far outpaced other parts of the metro area in new housing starts. Even now with the housing market as it is, it still leads. The long-awaited redevelopment of the Antioch Shopping Center is about to begin. Put all this in a human context. It has created jobs. In the future it will continue to create jobs, thousands of them, in an economy that cries out for some light at the end of the recession tunnel. That’s part of the Northland’s well-kept secret. Is development happening? You decide. Article written by Gene Hanson.

Around The NorthlandSamual U. Rodgers Health Center Named “Corporation of the Year” At this year’s 29th annual Minority Enterprise Development Week Award celebration, Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center was selected as “Corporation of the Year”. The award was given to honor the Health Center’s ongoing support of local minority businesses. Of particular note, Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center is completing the final phase of construction for a new facility on land adjacent to the existing Health Center at 825 Euclid in the northeast area of Kansas City. Price tag for the new building is approximately $25 million. Over $5 million of the cost will go to minority and women-owned subcontractors, representing almost 36% of the total amount spent on sub-contractors for this project. “Our commitment to support locally owned minority businesses didn’t start with the new building project,” noted Hilda Fuentes, CEO of Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center. “It’s the way we continually conduct our day to day business operations. It’s not only the ‘right’ thing to do—it’s the smart thing to do. The quality of goods and services provided, is outstanding.” “I’m honored to have our organization chosen for an award that speaks to our commitment to support diversity both within our Health Center and also beyond it, strengthening our local minority-owned business economy,” said Fuentes.

Governor Nixon Helps Open Public Computer Centers Governor Jay Nixon celebrated the grand opening of six public computer centers (PCCs) at the campuses of Metropolitan Community College-Kansas City, as part of Missouri’s MoBroadbandNow initiative. These computer centers will provide under-served residents access to computers and high-speed Internet access for training to help them in the job market and in their personal lives. Metropolitan Community College is a partner in the state of Missouri’s MoBroadbandNow initiative, and received a federal Broadband Technology Opportunities Program grant through the Missouri Department of Higher Education. “From the start of my administration, I’ve made it clear that the State of Missouri was going to make broadband access a top priority,” said Gov. Jay Nixon. “These computer labs here in Kansas City will provide the public, specifically unemployed and underemployed citizens, with access to knowledgeable staff, and courses in basic digital literacy and technology careers. As we extend the reach of high-speed Internet access across Missouri, the benefits for education, health care, public safety, commerce and consumers will be felt for decades to come.” The PCCs are located on each of MCC’s five campuses: Blue River in Independence; Business & Technology in Kansas City; Longview in Lee’s Summit; Maple Woods in Kansas City north; Penn Valley in Kansas City; and at the college’s Pioneer location, a satellite extension of the Penn Valley campus just east of the 18th & Vine district. The Metropolitan Community College Public Computer Centers function as one-stop technology centers for launching new opportunities, new careers and personal enrichment, with a specific focus on the unemployed and underemployed population in the target areas. ”We appreciate the opportunity to bring these six Public Computer Centers and digital literacy training to the communities we serve, and we appreciate Governor Nixon’s role in making the PCCs possible,” said MCC Chancellor Mark James. “This type of community access is an important part of our mission.” Users are required to register on their first visit to a PCC but there is no fee to use the computers. A lab specialist is available during operating hours to assist users. In addition to open lab time, the PCCs offer free computer training in seven core areas: computer basics; Internet and email; computer security and privacy; social media; basic software; digital devices; and job searching.
