Dear Friends of AssisiSince my fi rst report many exciting things have happened at the Assisi Centre.Our new building has been fully commissioned and the residents and families have embraced the modern facilities with great enthusiasm. As for the ongoing refurbishment of Stages Two and Three, all progresses well with the anticipated date of completion still scheduled for the fi rst half of 2014.Stage Two is now completed.In Mid-July our re-accreditation status was reviewed by the Department of Aged Care. We were visited by representatives of the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency Ltd, who conducted an audit on all of the 44 aspects of the accreditation standards.Following the two-day process, the Assisi Centre was fully accredited on the 44 aspects.On behalf of the Committee of Management, I would like to extend our sincere congratulations to Peter Staples, Eileen Kielty, and Sheila Cheary and to the many dedicated members of staff.During the audit process, I personally experienced some of the contributions by management to achieve this successful outcome and must say that all of us associated with Assisi should be very proud of the dedication and hard work that was undertaken to achieve such an excellent result. One of the memorable moments of this process was the overwhelming positive feedback and acknowledgements by the audit team at the fi nal meeting. A signifi cant number of residents and staff were.present.Also it truly was an extraordinary moment to see residents, in particular, acknowledging and applauding the positive reports delivered by the individual auditors.

Again, thank you everyone for a great team effort.In recent times the Committee of Management has been involved in various strategic planning activities, with particular emphasis placed on the future of Assisi. The strategic planning sessions were facilitated by Tony Yacono of Tony Yacono and associates Pty ltd, over two days. The Committee of Management has now developed a very clear vision for what it seeks to achieve over the next fi ve years.Also recently a number of sub-committees have been established to ensure that there will be vital support for our Committee of Management.Once again I would like to extend my gratitude and appreciation to the Ladies Committee for all their hard work.

It was pleasing to see the garage sale being supported by the many visitors in their quest to snap up a bargain. I would also like to thank the many generous donors to this event. Without such support this event would not be possible.

An annual Race Day luncheon was held at Moonee Valley Race Course, raising $7,500, for the Assisi Women’s Committee.Corvan Townsend, Mike Rossi and their wives pioneered this event. The Assisi community thanks all who organised and attended this very successful event

Finally, on behalf Committee of Management, I would like to congratulate the Chair of the Ladies Committee, Lilian Antonelli, who received the Medal of the Order of Australian, (OAM) General Division, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for Services to Aged Care.

Cari amici dell’AssisiDal mio primo rapporto, come presidente, al centro Assisi sono successe cose straordinarie.La nuova ala è stata ultimata per la soddisfazione dei residenti ed i loro familiari che utilizzano la nuova, moderna, struttura con grande entusiasmo.I lavori di ristrutturazione della vecchia ala stanno procedendo bene e dovrebbero venire completati in anticipo rispetto alle previsioni, per la prima metà del 2014.La seconda fase dei lavori è in via di completamento. Lo scorso luglio il Dipartimento di assistenza agli anziani ha condotto un’ispezione di due giorni presso il Centro Assisi, per il rinnovo dell’accredito di gestione.Il Centro Assisi ha soddisfatto tutti i 44 criteri applicati per l’accredito, ottenendo il massimo punteggio.A nome del comitato direttivo vorrei estendere le più sincere congratulazioni a Peter Staples, Eileen Kiltie e Sheila Cheary, oltre a tutti gli altri collaboratori e volontari dell’Assisi, per l’ottimo lavoro svolto.Durante il processo d’ispezione ho avuto modo di constatare personalmente, l’impegno e la dedizione di tutti coloro che lavorano all’Assisi, per ottenere l’eccellente risultato.

Uno dei momenti memorabili del processo d’ispezione è stato l’ultimo incontro con gli ispettori, durante il quale hanno dato riscontri estremamente positivi sulla gestione del Centro Assisi, ed hanno espresso pareri particolarmente favorevoli per la struttura manageriale che permette di offrire un livello di assistenza mirata alle esigenze dei nostri residenti e le loro famiglie.Un aspetto veramente straordinario è stato l’applauso

spontaneo di tanti residenti e dipendenti dell’Assisi alla lettura dei rapporti dei singoli ispettori.Grazie a tutti per quella che è stata, per usare la metafora calcistica, “un grande lavoro di squadra”.

Sempre recentemente sono stati formati alcuni sottocomitati che saranno di preziosa assistenza al Comitato direttivo.Permettetemi ancora una volta di esprimere la mia più grande gratitudine per il lavoro svolto dal Comitato femminile.Permettetemi anche di ringraziare, coloro che hanno fatto donazioni, e tutti i visitatori, alla ricerca di un ‘affare’, che hanno decretato il successo del nostro garage sale.

L’ippodromo Moonee Valley Race Course, non sarebbe lo stesso, senza l’evento annuale organizzato dall’Assisi Women’s Committee, un’iniziativa di Corvan Townsend, Mick Rossi e le rispettive mogli. Behind the scenes at Assisi Centre, Liliane Bulot has been quietly assisting the residents.For the last 20 years, Liliane has started work at seven in the morning, and worked to three in the afternoon, serving breakfast, preparing morning tea, and then serving lunch for the residents.This year Lilly, has decided to retire.Liliane started at the Centre in July 1993, when the Centre fi rst opened. She is our longest serving staff member.“When I started at Assisi, there were only four residents,” says Lilly, “And every day, or second day, someone new would arrive, while today there are many residents” recalled Liliane.Today there are 120 residents and soon 150.Despite the many years spent in Australia; Liliane

still maintains a very strong and charming French accent. Two months after Liliane joined the Centre she met, Teresa Mirabilio, who was from Italy’s Calabria region.Liliane and Teresa became very good friends and inseparable, so much so that they often fi nish one another’s sentences.Teresa started in the laundry and then transferred to the kitchen, where she assisted Lilly serving meals.Liliane was born in Rouen, the capital of upper Normandy, in France, a city famous for its’ own Notre Dame Cathedral and the beautiful Tour de Buerre (butter tower). The tower was painted by Claude Monet. Rouen is also famous among other things as the place of execution of Joan of Arc.

“After so many years, I have made friends with the residents, and I will miss them, as I will miss my colleagues,” says Liliane. “When I retire, I will take it easy for a while, but I haven’t ruled out coming back, maybe as a volunteer, to see my friends and my colleagues”.All at Assisi thank you Liliane for your dedication to the well-being of the residents over the last 20 years. You will be truly missed. As a small parting gift Assisi Centre wanted to send Liliane and her family to a night out at their favourite restaurant as an appropriate way of saying thank you to her for all the work over the years that she has been serving meals to our residents.It’s about time we served her a mealHave a great retirement Liliane and enjoy your trip back to la belle France.

Liliane Bulot, per gli ultimo vent’anni, ha assistito i nostri residenti dietro le quinte.Fin dall’apertura del centro Lilliane, ha cominciato a lavorare la mattina alle sette, fi no alle tre del pomeriggio, servendo la colazione e il pranzo ai residenti e preparando loro una tazza di te.Quest’anno Lilliane, che avendo cominciato a lavorare all’Assisi nel giugno del 1983, è la nostra prima dipendente, ha deciso di ritirarsi.“Quando ho iniziato all’Assisi c’erano solo quattro residenti – ha detto Lilly- e ogni secondo giorno ne arrivava uno nuovo, mentre oggi i residenti sono 120”.Due mesi più tardi, ad agosto, iniziava invece Teresa Mirabilio, una signora, quasi sua coetanea, proveniente dalla Calabria, che ha cominciato con il lavoro in lavanderia prima di passare alla cucina

dove assiste lo chef Andrea e dove aiuta Lilian a servire.Lilly e Teresa, sono subito diventate amiche ed oggi sono diventate inseparabili e spesso l’una termina la frase iniziata dall’altra.Lilliane (Lilly) Bulot, nativa di Rouen in Normandia, Francia, città famosa per essere stata quella dove è stata prima imprigionata e poi giustiziata Giovanna d’Arco nel 1431, ma anche per la bellissima cattedrale di Norte Dame, con la spledida Tour de beurre (torre di burro), immortalata da Claude Monet, nonostante gli anni trascorsi in Australia mantiene ancora un forte accento francese.“Con i residenti ormai siamo diventati amici e mi mancheranno molto, così come mi mancheranno i colleghi che sono tutti molto competenti, ma

anche molto simpatici”, dice Lilly, coadiuvata dall’amica Teresa: E cosa farà Lilliane Bulot ora che non avrà più da accudire i residenti dell’Assisi? “Mi riposero un po’ ma non è escluso che possa tornare, magari come volontaria, per continuare a vedere gli amici, le amiche e i colleghi degli ultimi vent’anni”Tutta la comunità dell’Assisi saluta Liliane con grande affetto e dopo tanti anni al servizio degli altri ha deciso di mandare la cara amica e la sua famiglia a cena nel loro ristorante preferito. Finalmente anche Lilliane verrà servita.Tanti auguri per il futuro e ‘Bon voyage’ verso la ‘belle France’.

Assisi residents,Alvina and Alex Marceglia,have been married for a very happy 74 years.In the mid-1930’s Alex and Alvina met at the local dance in their village Fiume, Northern Italy, and have been together ever since. Apparently it was love at fi rst sight.They have three daughters, six grand-children, and fi ve great-grand-children. Alvina and Alex also had a very exciting life, with Alex travelling the world with the Italian Navy, before and during WW2. He particularly liked America.While in the Navy he qualifi ed as an Engineering Offi cer and could turn his hand to fi x anything that needed to be fi xed. This would hold in in good stead later in life.He studied engineering in English because the Italian ships were built mainly from British parts. Being able to read and speak English would

also hold him in good stead later on in lifeDuring the war three of the ships he served on were sunk and three times he was POW, escaping each time, from British and German camps.In 1950 the family migrated to Australia, settling in Melbourne.Alex was immediately sent off to pick grapes in Redhill Victoria and Alvina became a domestic helper in Kyneton.Because of Alex’s command of English he translated work instruction by the vineyard management and the mostly Italian workforce.Alex eventually worked as a Quantity Surveyor for the then Metropolitan Board of Works which was responsible for Melbourne’s water supply and sewage treatment.Alex also completely built their home in Reservoir, transporting all the timber and everything else on his bicycle. Because of his engineering experience and qualifi cation, Alex

did all the plumbing and electrical installation. Meanwhile, Alivini went to work at Patons Brakes, eventually joining the Bureau of Meteorology. She was qualifi ed to high level in science and mathematics in Italy. Unfortunately like many migrants their qualifi cations were not recognized in Australia.Never the less she helped in the computerization of all the Bureau’s weather reading stations, and was sent to Tasmania and Western Australia to train people and help out setting up the system.In 2007 Alex joined the Assisi community and Alvina in 2011.They have been very happy living at Assisi and are one of three married couples at the Centre..Earlier this year Alex celebrated his 100th birthday and of course received a note from Queen Elizabeth and the Governor General.

Celebrazioni di una coppia dell’ Assisi, Alvina e Alex Marceglia, sposati da 74 anni, si sono conosciuti ad un ballo, negli Anni 30, a Fiume, e non si sono più lasciati.Alex imbarcato in Marina, prima della seconda guerra mondiale, ha avuto modo di visitare il mondo ed è sempre stato impressionato dalla grandiosità degli Stati Uniti.Durante la guerra, le tre navi sulle quali è stato imbarcato, sono state silurate, e per tre volti è stato prigioniero di guerra, e per tre volte è riuscito ad evadere sia da campi inglesi, che tedeschi.Nel 1950 Alex e Alvina, sono sbarcati a Melbourne. Alex è subito partito per Red Hill,

dove lo attendeva la vendemmia di pinot nero e chardonnay della Mornington Peninsula, mentre Alvina ha trovato lavoro come domestica, a Kyneton.L’ex ingegnere navale, che parlava l’inglese dato che aveva conseguito gli studi in quella lingua, è presto diventato ‘l’interprete’ uffi ciale, tra la direzione dell’azienda vinicola e la mano d’opera, che in gran parte proveniva dall’Italia, prima di venir assunto dal Board of Work, l’ente statale, responsabile per l’erogazione di acqua potabile.La coppia ha vissuto per molti anni nella casa di Reservoir, completamente costruita da Alex, incluse le installazioni idrauliche ed elettriche, mentre Alvina, che aveva conseguito studi in

matematica e scienze, dopo una parentesi con la ditta Patons Brakes, ha lavorato per molti anni al Bureau di meteorologia, contribuendo alla computerizzazione del centro e all’addestramento del personale anche in Tasmania e nel Western Australia.Alex e Alvina, che hanno avuto tre fi glie e che sono nonni e bisnonni di 11 nipoti in tutto, sono una di tre coppie sposate che vivono all’Assisi. Alex è arrivato nel 2007 e Alvina lo ha seguito nel 2011.Quest’anno Alex ha celebrato i ‘cento anni’, e naturalmente ha ricevuto gli auguri della Regina Elisabetta e dal Governatore generale.

Plenty of Action

The last few months have certainly been packed with plenty of action There really I so much to be excited about coming up soon. Of course the fi rst big news is that we met the maximum 44 standards for accreditation. It is a credit to Eileen Kielty and her whole team. We do appreciate what they do so often over and above the call of duty. You can read the report of the accreditation agency either on our website www. Assisicentre.com Or the accreditation agency website .accreditation.org.au/accreditation/accreditation standards/We know that we can always improve and that’s exactly what we will be doing And we start now. One of the things that the auditors really liked was that our unit manager structure where each unit manager was much closer to the residents and familiesNew Position Now we have added to that structure with the appointment of a new role of assistant Director of CareEileen Kielty our Director of Care, has too much work and needs more time to have face to face time with resident families and staff . Fiona Kool, who many will know as one of our unit managers will be our new Assistant Director of Care.

We want our residents and our families to be able to say, one of the best decisions they could have made at the time was to go to live at Assisi Centre. No one ever wants to come into care if they don’t need to before its time, but we fi nd more and more that if the decision is being made too late. People can miss out on the benefi ts and security of not having to worry as much about the day to day things that can go wrong at home alone. As well as other benefi tsNow that we are entering the fi nal stage of the redevelopment we can begin to see how Assisi Centre will really be a good homely place to live in so many ways.And it won’t be long now. -Only a few more months to go.The Galli ProjectOne thing that’s coming now and we want you involved also, is to share your family’s story of migration to Australia. We will be creating a big wall with photos of the migration story - the big ships, where people lived in their early years after arrival the work and how the family settled. It will not only be pictures but interviews and stories as well Everyone knows about all the famous people who have made such a big mark on Australia but everyone who made that very brave journey has a great story and it is part of our a history that that we don’t want to lose. So much a part of living at Assisi today and the future.

We will be collecting photos. Interviewing and using those stories to help staff get to know the resident better and have something personal they can talk about with them. We will be telling you more in the months ahead The Pamela and Lorenzo Galli charitable foundation who are wonderful contributors to Assisi Centre have given us a $50,000 donation to make it all happen. Gli ultimi mesi sono stati particolarmente impegnativi ma ci hanno dato anche grandi risultati. Il più importante è sicuramente la ‘promozione a pieni voti’, ottenuta dalla Aged Care Accreditation Agency, l’agenzia che rilascia gli accrediti di gestione alle Case di cura e di riposo.Il Centro Assisi, e questo è merito di Eileen Kielty e del suo team di collaboratori, ha ottenuto il massimo del punteggio soddisfacendo tutti e 44 i criteri, previsti.L’intero rapporto è reperibile sia sul nostro sito www.Assisicentre.com, che sul sito dell’agenzia.Consideriamo comunque l’ottimo risultato conseguito come un punto di partenza, non di arrivo, e vogliamo continuare a migliorarci.Uno degli aspetti della nostra gestione, che sono stati oggetto di commenti particolarmente positivi, da parte del team di ispettori, che ha visitato l’Assisi, è stata la nostra struttura manageriale, dove ogni direttore di reparto lavora a più stretto contatto con i residenti e i loro familiari.Nuova caricaQuesta struttura si è ora arricchita di

una nuova posizione quella di assistente direttore, che allevierà la mole di lavoro di Eileen Kielty, e che verrà ricoperta da Fiona Kool, che molti dei lettori avranno conosciuto ,in qualità di direttore di reparto.Comprendiamo quanto sia diffi cile e doloroso per molti, dover lasciare la casa dove spesso hanno vissuto una vita, e dove hanno tutte le loro memorie, ma spesso se la decisione viene presa troppo tardi, ci si priva del livello di assistenza e di attenzione e di sicurezza, di una struttura quale il Centro Assisi.Il nostro obiettivo, la nostra aspirazione, è che i nostri residenti e i loro familiari, considerino la decisione di affi darsi all’Assisi, come una delle migliori mai prese.Tra qualche mese i lavori di ristrutturazione, che hanno raggiunto le fasi fi nali, verranno ultimati e l’Assisi.

Il progetto GalliUn’altra novità per l quale chiediamo il vostro contributo è di condividere con noi le vostre storie di immigrazione in Australia.

Vogliamo creare un muro di foto e di storie dell’immigrazione, dalle navi dalle quali sono sbarcati tanti italiani, ai loro primi lavori, alle loro famiglie. Non si tratterà solo di una carrellata di immagini ma anche di storie e interviste dei protagonisti.Tutti conoscono le storie degli immigrati che hanno lasciato il loro marchio nella storia australiana, ma chiunque abbia preso la coraggiosa decisione di emigrare, ha una storia da raccontare, che fa parte della nostra coscienza collettiva, così presente e reale nei residenti del Centro Assisi, che va preservata.Nei prossimi mesi saremo in grado di informarvi su quando cominceremo ad organizzare le interviste e il ritiro delle fotografi e, che serviranno per il nostro ‘muro dell’immigrazione’, che sarà reso possibile dal generoso contributo della fondazione Pamela and Lorenzo Galli Charitable foundation, che ha donato la somma di $ 50.000 per il progetto. Out &about

The new bus was bought with donations from our wonderful Assisi community and has proved to be a great success.Every week, Assisi bus driver, Cameron Grace, staff and volunteers take residents out on trips, often twice a week. Over the last 18 months the activities teams have organized picnics by the Yarra River, at Sugarloaf, Emerald Lake and Warrandyte.

From the safety of the bus, the residents witnessed the wonders of theWerribee Range Zoo.Residents have also visited the Melbourne Museum, the Melbourne Planetarium, at Scienceworks, and the Lindsay Fox Car Museum at Docklands.Residents also frequently enjoy lunches at the Veneto and other Clubs.Werribee Park proved to be extremely

popular. The residents wandered the Mansion, the beautiful grounds and Victoria’s offi cial Rose Garden. The roses of many varieties were in full bloom and are rarely seen in one fantastic show.These are just a few of the trips organized by the Assisi Activities Team over the last 18 months. More adventures are planned.

Il nuovo autobus, super attrezzato, acquistato con le generose donazione della splendida comunità che si raccoglie attorno al Centro Assisi, è stato un successone.Ogni settimana, ma spesso anche due volte a settimana, l’autista dell’Assisi, Cameron Grace, si mette al volante, e porta residenti, personale di assistenza e volontari, a fare delle gite.Negli ultimi diciotto mesi, sono stati

organizzati svariati picnic lungo il fi ume Yarra , ma anche a Sugarloaf, Emerald Lake e Warrandyte.I residenti che spesso si godono un pranzetto al Veneto Club o in altri club italiani di Melbourne, sono rimasti a bordo dell’autobus durante la visita al giardino zoologico di Werribee, dove non ci sono recinzioni, ma hanno passeggiato nei padiglioni del Museo di Melbourne, del Planetario, Scienceworks e al museo delle

macchine di Lindsay Fox, magnate dei trasporti su strada di Melbourne, situato a Docklans.La visita a Werribee Park è una delle preferite dai residenti, per le tante cose da vedere, oltre allo zoo, come gli splendidi giardini con più di 5.000 varietà di rose, e l’elegante e signorile villa con i suoi saloni.Queste solo alcune delle attività programmate dalla squadra dell’Assisi, ma nuove avventure sono in arrivo.

of the Lord in August at the Assisi Centre. Nearly 40 residents and staff attended Holy Mass and Communion.St Jude Thaddeus the Apostle is the patron saint of “Hope and the hopeless and lost causes”. St Jude was one of the twelve apostles and a relative of Jesus. St Jude Thaddeus should not be confused with Judas Iscariot.

Giuda Taddeo l’apostolo ha celebrato la Santa messa per la festa della Trasfi gurazione di Gesù celebrata il 6 agosto, nella cappella del Centro Assisi. Oltre quaranta tra residenti e dipendenti hanno assistito alla cerimonia.San Giuda Taddeo patrono della “Speranza e delle cause perse”, era uno dei dodici apostoli ed un parente di Gesù, e non va confuso con Giuda Escariota, che tradì Gesù.

Rosetta Anzanello has been associated with the Assisi Centre for 18 years.When her father became a resident, she and her husband visited every week.Rosetta has been a volunteer for just over 15 years. Most Tuesdays and Saturdays, Rosetta travels to the Assisi Centre to socialize with the residents and assist with their care.“I love helping as a volunteer because it gives you a great feeling when you see the smiles from the residents after talking with them and fi nding out about their lives,” said Rosetta.“I also am very grateful to the volunteers and staff who helped my father,” added Rosetta.Rosetta and her husband have travelled overseas seven times, visiting the USA twice.They have been married 57 years, enjoying their two daughters’ family, and their grand-children who are 18 and 21.Rosetta is a keen gardener and she and her husband love dancing at the Vento Club most weekends. Rosetta thinks volunteering adds a purpose to one’s life. Volunteers are an extremely important part of the Assisi Centre Community, and are very welcome. Rosetta Anzanello, volontaria all’Assisi, da quindici anni, si è avvicinata al Centro tre anni prima, in occasione del ricovero del padre, quando lo veniva a trovare ogni settimana assieme al marito.Ogni sabato e quasi ogni mercoledì, Rosetta visita il centro Assisi, per socializzare con i residenti e per assisterli: “Mi piace moltissimo il volontariato per la soddisfazione, la sensazione di gioia che provo quando i residenti che assisto, mi sorridono. E poi sono molto grata ai volontari che hanno aiutato mio padre”.Rosetta e il marito, sposati da 57 anni, con due fi glie e due nipoti di 18 e 21 anni, sono andati all’estero sette volte, due delle quali hanno visitato gli Stati Uniti, ma quando sono a Melbourne, questi amanti del ballo, nel week end, è facile trovarli sulla pista del Veneto Club.Per Rosetta Anzanella il volontariato ha aggiunto una dimensione ed ha dato un altro signifi cato alla sua esistenza. This is the fi rst of series of articles about the infl uence of Italian migrants on the culture of Melbourne.By Ricardo Schurri and Christian Peterson.

The infl uence of Italian migrants on the restaurant and cafe culture of Melbourne has been nothing short of spectacular. The fi rst restaurants in Melbourne date back to 1850, when the request to the now Melbourne City Council, for a permit for an industrial kitchen was made.The fi rst elegant restaurants were the French, Cafè de Paris, next to Theatre Royal Hotel, at the top end of Melbourne and the Vienna Cafè, in the Block Arcade.The two most important restaurants in Melbourne in fi rst two decades of the 20th Century were the sophisticated and bohemian Fasoli’s, Maison Doree in King Street openingx in 1897, which was owned by two Swiss migrants.

The Maison Doree was frequented by the famous soprano, Nellie Melba, bohemians and writers.The other restaurant Cafè Denat, opened in 1893, in Flinders Lane, before moving fi rstly to Little Collins Street ,and then to Exhibition Street and fi nally the top end of Bourke Street, Melbourne.The Panelli family supplied non- traditional vegetables, such as artichoke and asparagus and an Italian variety like radicchio salad to these restaurants . The descendants of the Panelli Family continued a fi ne tradition in Melbourne’s restaurant culture that still goes on today, Giselda Panelli married an Australian called Jim, who was to opened a wine establishment which is a Melbourne institution. Jimmy Watsons, in Lygon Street Carlton. Today JC Watson Wine Merchants carries on that fi ne wine tradition.

The earlier Cafè Denat is now known as Grossi Florentino and is still one of the most important restaurants in Melbourne.Those early Italian pioneers started the Italian infl uence on Melbourne’s cuisine and the wine industry and ended the domination of England’s “roast and three veg.”At fi rst some of these restaurants provided meals that were inexpensive, however some restaurants became known for fi ne food and elegant dining. Melbournians have a lot to be thankful to the Italians that migrated to Australia.Now if you enjoy an Espresso coffee, then you have Milanese Luigi Bezzerra to thank for that, as he invented the world’s fi rst Espresso machine, which was patented in 1901.His machine was the foundation for Melbourne being known as the home of Australia’s Best Coffee. promosso la dieta mediterranea, hanno trasformato la maniera di mangiare e bere a Melbourne mettendo fi no al dominio inglese del “roast and three veg”.I ristoranti italiani che sono stati aperti nel corso degli anni, all’inizio erano luoghi di ritrovo per i giovani immigrati, ancora non sposati, per un piatto di pasta e un bicchiere di vino, ma presto molti di loro sono diventati ristoranti eleganti e raffi nati, espressione della grande tradizione culinaria italianaMelbourne ha sicuramente un voto di riconoscenza nei confronti degli immigrati italiani, ed ora, se gradite una buona tazza di caffè, dovreste ringraziare il milanese Luigi Bezzera, inventore della prima macchina espresso, brevettata nel lontano 1901.Quelle stesse macchine per il caffè sono diventate le fondazioni affi nché Melbourne diventasse la capitale australiana del caffè, ma questa è un’altra storia, per un’altra edizione di Notizie.
