The President elect argued in favour of reforming Mexico´s fiscal system so that it imposes a framework of

accountability upon the Government and incentivizes investment. This would be carried out in parallel to a re-

form in the social security system. Thus he laid out a vision that encompasses both free markets and social

justice.

Moreover he also remarked on the importance of transforming Mexico into an energy powerhouse, which is why he will push for further

private investment in the sector, without giving way to privatization.

In the afternoon, President elect Peña Nieto met with Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, after which he headed to the Official Resi-

dence of Mexico, where he made a statement about his visit to members of the press.

He highlighted that two key issues of his meetings throughout the day were the broadening of some of the most important ties that bind

Mexico and the United Kingdom, particularly issues pertaining to cooperation in education and the further promotion of commercial ties

between both countries.

Additionally, the President elect commented that another important objective behind his working tour of Europe was to create a prior

environment of understanding with Heads of State and of Government.

As part of this ongoing dialogue´s outreach effort, the meeting emphasized the importance of bringing in the private sector and younger generations as stakeholders in the formulation of international development goals. The objective of this discussion was to forge agreements on finance and poverty eradication once the Millennium Development Goals reach their deadline in 2015.

The panellists discussed policy options related to justice, natural resource management, human development, employment and government accountability. After the meeting, Prime Minister David Cameron offered a reception in No. 10 Downing Street where he thanked all the participants and expressed that he hopes to continue with this debate taking off from the “good foundations” laid out on this occasion. The High-Level panel´s discussions will carry on over the next eight months before meeting again in Liberia next year.

Embassy hosts celebrations of Mexico’s Independence anniversary

Reception at the Official Residence

On the day prior to the party, the Embassy of Mexico invited diplo-

mats, British officials and other distinguished guests to a reception at

the Official Residence, in order to commemorate this founding event.

During the reception’s inauguration, Ambassador Medina Mora

gave a brief speech in which he reminded guests that “Mexico is the

only civilization in America that comprises the cultural legacy of three

civilizations and can also boast of being keeper to some of the world’s

most spectacular natural treasures”.

However he also urged attendants to take the occasion not solely

to reminisce on Mexico’s past, but to look forward to the opportunities

can be seized thanks to its stability and emergence as a manufactur-

ing exporting powerhouse.

It has become a yearly custom for London to hear a resounding “viva Mexico!” on the night of every 15th of September. This year was no exception, as hundreds of guests took part in the celebration of Mexico´s 202nd Independence Anniversary organised by the Em-bassy at the Camden Town Centre. Ambassador Eduardo Medina Mora presided over the traditional ceremony known as the “Shout of Independence”, in which the audience enthusiastically cheered the names of Mexico´s national heroes. Prior to said ceremony, the Embassy´s Deputy Head of Mission, Ambassador Alejandro Estivill, gave an introductory speech in which he reviewed some of this year´s events that have further strengthened the bilateral relation between Mexico and the UK, such as Mexico´s Presidency of the G20, Prime Minister David Cameron´s recent official visit to Mexico and the terrific performance of Mexican athletes in London 2012. During the party, guests were treated to Mexican food and drinks, as well as singing to a live Mariachi band. Throughout the eve-ning a giant screen showed pictures of “Invisible Cities”, an exhibition by Mexican photographer Ulises Castellanos, which casts a modern view on Mexico City. During the event, guests danced and mingled in a festive environment that served as a reminder to the UK of Mexico’s naturally friendly disposition.

Ambassadors in dialogue with British Mexican Society

A healthy understanding

4

The Mexican Ministry of Health and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) signed in London a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the cooperation among both institutions, in order to further their citizens´ health and well-being. The MoU was signed during the visit of a Mexican delegation from the Ministry of Health to the headquarters of NICE on the last week of October. The main objective of this visit was to strengthen the relationship between both institutions, and share best prac-tices, in order to improve the quality of the health systems in both countries. Mexico's delegation was headed by Dr. Germán Fajardo Dolci, Undersecretary for Integration and Development in the Health Sec-tor and was accompanied by Fernando Álvarez del Rio, Head of the Economic Analysis Unit and Mr. Francisco Hernandez Torres, Director General of Quality and Health Education. NICE is responsible for providing national guidance on the promotion of good health and the prevention and treatment of ill health.

The Official Residence of Mexico opened its doors to receive members of the British Mexican Society who were invited by Richard Maudly, Chairman of the BMS, to a public conversation with Ambassador of the UK to Mexico Judith MacGregor and Ambassador of Mex-ico to the UK Eduardo Medina Mora. Both Ambassadors reviewed the accomplishments made in various areas by the bilateral relationship during 2012, as well as the work yet to be done in order to fully exploit the potential that lies within this transatlantic friendship. Ambassador Macgregor remarked that education is playing an increasingly prominent role in binding Mexico and the UK. One particu-lar example of this was the announcement earlier in year by the British Council in Mexico, of a state level initiative that aims to train thou-sands of Mexican teachers in professional English. Both Ambassadors highlighted the “shared values” between Mexico and the UK, which was particularly evident in the context of the good working relationship that both countries established in the G20, a forum that Mexico presided during 2012. This was followed by Prime Minister David Cameron’s visit to Mexico City, in which he led an enthusiastic business delegation that have placed high hopes on both countries’ pledge to double trade by 2015 to reach £4.2 billion. Ambassador Medina Mora also pointed out that the year on year increase in tourists from the UK to Mexico -which makes it the third most important source of visitors to Mexico- has caught the eye of stakeholders in the tourism industry; thus the opening of new flights and frequencies from various airlines connecting both countries. “During my three years as Ambassador of Mexico to the UK I have noticed a growing trend an ever more avid curiosity from both coun-tries to tighten the ties that bind them, whilst creating new ones, in order to know more and more about each other. Some of you might be familiar with the fact that Plato use to say that curiosity –the drive to enquire about another being- was born from a sense of amazement. In this sense, we can conclude that both countries have found precisely that, a sense of amazement about each other.”

Ambassador Eduardo Medina Mora took part in the inauguration of Mexico Week, a jam-packed programme of cultural events organised by the University of Southamp-ton´s Centre for Mexico-Southampton Collaboration (MeXsu). From the 28th of Octo-ber to the 3rd of November, Southampton University and an array of venues across the city were taken over by exponents of Mexico´s contemporary culture. The programme included innovative plays such as Juana in a Million and The Art of Demonstration, as well as highly accomplished films: Cronos directed by Guillermo del Toro, Arráncame la Vida which is based on the acclaimed novel by Ángeles Mas-treta and Tequila Oil: Getting lost in Mexico.

No festival dedicated to Mexican culture could lack musical performances, which is why Mexico Week was embellished by the talented Elena Durán, Paté de Fua and a Mariachi band. Moreover, attendants also had the chance to learn Dazón in specialized workshops. Even though Danzón is of Cuban origins, it is cus-tomary to see couples dancing this festive music in public squares in Mexican towns. Mexico Week coincided with Day of the Dead, which is why MeXsu set up a traditional altar at the Avenue Campus and hosted a Day of the Dead party. In his inaugural speech, Ambassador Medina Mora thanked Professor Clare Mar-Molinero, head of MeXsu, for this outstanding series of events and highlighted that this initiative evinces that the UK is increasingly interested in searching beyond dated stereotypes of Mex-ico, and delve deeper into its vast culture.

A week dedicated to Mexico in Southampton

As part of the Promexico´s drive to seek new business connec-tions between Mexico and the UK, trade commissioner in London José Neif and trade Officer Andrés Espinosa held meetings with representatives of companies with a stake in industries that are key to Mexico´s growth potential: energy and aerospace manufac-turing. The former accompanied a delegation of Mexico´s national oil company, Pemex, who travelled to the UK to promote the third round of incentivized contracts for private companies. Trade com-missioner Neif also met with Fernando Calvillo, CEO of Fermaca, in order to discuss the company´s upcoming road show which seeks to attract investors for the company´s second gas pipe-line that will stretch from Mexico´s northern border down to the centre of the country. Trade officer Espinosa attended the Aerospace Engineering Suppliers Fair and Congress in search of prospective companies that could be integrated into the supply chain -particularly in terms of processes, specialty plastics and raw materials- of what is becoming a fast growing industry in Mexico.

Mexico Through Your Senses reveals culinary gem

BILATERAL

As part of a series of cultural events that brings select British audiences closer to some of Mexico’s finest cul-tural products, the Embassy welcomed guests on the 11th of October to the Official Residence where they had the opportunity to enjoy one of Mexico’s most exquisite dishes, mole. Prior to the tasting, chef’s Erick Medina and Nuno Mendes held a public conversation in which they dis-cussed the wealth of Mexico’s diverse culinary traditions and examined the preshipanic and hispanic heritage of mole, which is one of the first historic instances of fusion cuisine. Mole is chocolate based savory sauce that is normally served with chicken or pork and has an array of variants, such as the classical black mole, the fiery red, yellow and even white. This chapter of Mexico Through Your Senses was themed on the senses of taste and smell. During the events’ inaugura-tion, Mrs. Laura Medina Mora highlighted that this dish is highly representative of Mexico’s omnivourous capacity to harmo-nize elements from various cultures, something which it shares with the United Kingdom. For this occasion, Chef Erick Medina prepared three delicious variations of mole (yellow, red and black) accompanied by tortillas and red rice. For those familiar with mole, it came to no surprise to see attendants ask for more than one serving of each dish. As demand for Mexican food continues to grow in the UK, it will surely be a matter of time for more menus to feature this mouth-watering dish.

Ambassador Eduardo Medina Mora took part in a round-table discussion at the Institute of Higher Studies in Geneva on the 24th of September, dedicated to Carlos Fuentes´ legacy to literature, international law and diplomacy. The event was organised by said institution and Mexico´s Permanent Mission to the UN. Ambassador Medina Mora reviewed the acclaimed writer´s longstanding relation with diplomacy, first during his childhood and teenage years as son of the distinguished Ambas-sador Rafael Fuentes; later on as an official at the Foreign Ministry in various capacities and finally as Ambassador of Mexico to France from 1975 to 1977. However he also high-lighted the influence that these experiences had on Fuentes´ intellectual formation. In this sense, Ambassador Medina Mora remarked that Fuentes insisted on the importance of gaining a “transversal knowledge” which encompasses economics, politics, a sense of history and culture in order to accurately understand the world. Moreover, Ambassador Medina Mora also reflected on a “harmonic tension” that lived within Fuentes: “it is clear from his many years abroad, the infinite amount of books he read and his standing as an international intellectual that he was very much a citizen of the world. A man of his time. However, even though his interests and education always re-mained universal, his passion was very much rooted in his country of nationality. The con-

stant physical distance that Fuentes had with Mexico allowed him to view the country with an eye that was both lucidly critical, yet at the same time, devoutly infatuated.” During the event, Dr. Florence Olivier from Sorbonne University and jurist Marcelo Kohen explained the influence of Fuentes on lit-erature and international law. Geneva was the first European city in which Fuentes lived. There he studied at the Institute of Higher Studies and aided Mexico´s Ambassador Roberto Córdoba, then member of the UN´s International Law Commission. It is worth noting that London was also a particularly significant city for Fuentes, which served as a haven for him in the latter years of his life to immerse himself in the passion that made him a universal Mexican.

Day of the Dead in the UK: more alive than ever

Day of the Dead Festival at the Old Vic’s Tunnels captivates audiences From the 31st October to 3rd November, the Embassy of Mexico in the UK, in collaboration with Wahaca and Nomad, presented a sensational series of cultural events at the Old Vic’s Tunnels to celebrate the Day of the Dead, one of Mexico’s traditions that best represents its mixed heritage from Spanish and Prehispanic culture. The Festival’s attendants not only enjoyed some of Wahaca’s most delicious dishes -as the Tunnels were transformed into Wahaca’s street kitchen and Mezcalaría bar- but had the chance to witness the first four shows of Rodrigo y Gabriela’s new European tour. Moreover, the festival also featured exhibitions of work by highly acclaimed Mexican photogra-pher Graciela Iturbide, and newly commissioned installations of visual arts by the London based Le Gun collective, British artist Hew Locke, Nancy Fouts, Tupac Martir, Dr. Lakra, Harry de Quette-ville, Vivienne Griffin and others. On the last day of the Festival, families were invited to take part in handcrafts workshops in which children learned how to decorate the indispensable sugar skulls that are iconic of this tradi-tion, as well as listening to legends and myths related to the Day of the Dead which were narrated by a storyteller. Though often misunderstood, the Day of the Dead is not a sinister or somber custom. During this time of the year, families gather to welcome the temporary return of their loved ones from the afterlife, welcoming them with the things that they most enjoyed whilst alive, which is why this tradi-tion has a festive tone. During this four day festival the spirit of the Day of the Dead ran through the Old Vic Tunnels, and reminded attendants of an idea put forward by Ambassador Medina Mora during the festival´s inauguration: “what lies at the heart of Día de Muertos is a message that transcends the borders of nationality and creed; namely, that by remembering the life of those we love that are no longer amongst the living, we allow them to shine with renewed light and remind ourselves of the wonder that is to be alive.”

Page 9: NEWSLETTER OF THE EMBASSY OF MEXICO IN THE UNITED KINGDOMembamex.sre.gob.mx/reinounido/images/stories/PDF/invierno12.pdf · NEWSLETTER OF THE EMBASSY OF MEXICO IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

The Embassy of Mexico in the UK, dedicated this year's tradi-tional altar of the Day of the Dead at the Official Residence to the memory of the internationally acclaimed writer Carlos Fuentes, who passed away this year. The altar itself was a stunning installation made by Mexican visual artist, Tupac Martir, who tailored its design and construc-tion so as to incorporate symbols that best represented the writer’s life. Additionally, the altar was also themed on the island of Janitizio, which boasts of one of the most stunning Day of the Dead celebrations: the fishermen of the island cross the lake at night on candlelit rafts, thus symbolizing the return of the dead to the world of the living.

The Embassy hosted a reception at the Residence for diplo-mats and other distinguished guests to commemorate the event. During the gathering, the Ambassador of Colombia to the UK, Mauricio Rodriguez, read out a special message that President Juan Manuel Santos sent for this occasion, in which he told of Fuentes´ close links and friendship to Colombia.

CULTURE

The life of Carlos Fuentes celebrated in Day of the Dead

Moreover, Mrs. Laura Medina Mora, who headed this initiative, also addressed guests on the importance of this tradition and on the legacy of Carlos Fuentes. In this sense Mrs. Medina Mora pointed out that although his death is an irreparable loss for his family, friends, country and readers across the world, Fuentes was an ideal protagonist for an altar of the Day of the Dead, be-cause his insatiable curiosity about various dimensions of the world served as a warning to the living that “that to be truly alive, it doesn’t suffice to breathe and eat. We must be awake, critical and not sleepwalk through the infinite amount of details that make the world a fascinating place to inhabit.”

The 20th Edition of Raindance Film Festival (26th of September – 7th of October) screened a selection of seven exceptional and recently produced films, celebrating the best of independent Mexican Cinema in London and recognizing the importance of Mexico to this art form. Raindance is widely recognized as the largest independent film festival in Europe. Special features included the opening night film "Here Comes the Devil" –a supernatural thriller directed by Adrián García, that recounts the tale of the mysterious changes that occur to a couples´ children after they venture into the caves of the mountainous region near Ti-juana. As part of the festival’s effort to promote emerging talent, the Mexican strand featured the directorial debuts of many up and com-ing filmmakers that will surely join the ranks of consolidated directors such as Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritú or Guillermo del Toro. This se-lection showcased Donkeys by Odín Salazar, Flower in the Slime by Guillermo González (Center of Cinematographic Qualification, CCC) and My Universe in Lower Case by Hatuey Viveros (University Cen-tre of Cinematographic Studies, CUEC). Three important new documentaries formed part of the line up: Die Standing Up by the prestigious journalist Jacaranda Correa; the touching story of Purépecha Herlinda Morales in Brilliant Soil by Jose Luis Figueroa and Sebastián Díaz; and Barbarous Mexico by Luis Rincón which explores the legacy of slavery in Mexico. The Mexican strand at Raindance festival evinces the growing curiosity in British audiences to discover more of Mexico´s heritage in filmmaking, a heritage that is being renovated everyday by the crea-tivity and innovation of young Mexican filmmakers.

Cinematic and cultural festival wins over British audiences

An array of Mexican and British institutions presented LondonMexfest, a three day artistic fiesta that took place at RichMix

during August. The festival featured live music, contemporary, award winning films alongside exhibitions, food – and Lucha

Libre. The festival’s success was evident from the enthusiastic reaction of its more than 5000 strong audience.

Attendants were wowed with a top level line-up including the world premiere of Made in Mexico -a kaleidoscopic portrait

of Mexico by UK filmmaker Duncan Bridgeman- followed by a live concert from Amandititita, the Mexican queen of An-

arcumbia.

After this grand opening, LondonMexFest showcased a litany of films by some of Mexico’s most prominent directors,

such as Michel Franco (this year’s winner of Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes), short films by Carlos Cuarón and Palm

D’Or winner Elissa Miller. The programme was also comprised by a selection of Mexican sci-fi classics that influenced the

likes of Quentin Tarantino and Guillermo del Toro.

The festival included a photography exhibition themed around Mexico’s Lucha Libre by Lourdes Goubet, as well as an

artistic projection onto Rick Mix’s façade by Tupac Martir.

Moreover, LondonMexFest was honoured with the presence of a sensory pop up studio set up by Sight of Emotion char-

ity. The head of this organization, Gina Badenoch, was recently recognized as a Young Global Leader by the World Eco-

nomic Forum for her work in using photography as a medium of empowerment for the blind and visually impaired.

During the festival, Virgin Atlantic and the Mexico Tourism Board organized a draw to win a double return flight to Can-

cun. The lucky winner, Stephen Gallagher, received the prize from Manuel Diaz Cebrian, the Director of the Mexico Tour-

ism Board in London.

LondonMexFest was presented by The British Council, The Mexican National Council for Culture and Arts, The Mexican

Film Institute, Morelia International Film Festival, Ambulante and CANANA and was supported by The Mexican Embassy in

the UK and The Mexican Tourism Board. Official supporters include Cinepolis, José Cuervo and Wahaca.

World Travel Market 2013

12

Consolidated for some time as the biggest exhibition in the tourism industry in the United Kingdom, World Travel Market celebrated in 2012 its 33rd edition. Mexico participated with a 400m2 pavilion, which hosted more than 70 tourism companies, such as destination manage-ment companies, hotels, tour operators and ground operators coming from Mexico to offer their products and services to British and Euro-pean buyers. This exhibition was reserved to the tourism industry from the 5th to the 7th of November and opened to the public on the 8th of November. During World Travel Market, the Mexico Tourism Board continued to cement its relationship with Visit Britain through a program of col-laboration and a common agenda covering items such as immigration, customs, cultural promotion and exchange between both countries, in order to increase the bilateral traffic of tourists. During a working breakfast with leading figures from the British tourism industry -organized by both institutions with the help of the Brit-ish Council- the Mexican Minister of Tourism, Gloria Guevara, made a presentation on the growth of the tourism industry in Mexico and the increase in the number of British passengers to Mexico.

More precisely, there was a 6.9% increase in the number of British passengers to Mexico at the end of September 2012 compared to the same period in 2011, which is in line with the growing trend of tourism flows from the UK to Mexico. This demand has caught the eye of Airlines, which is why Virgin Atlantic will be adding a third frequency to its Heathrow-Cancun flight come summer of 2013. During that same time, British Airways will be opening a fifth frequency to its Heathrow-Mexico City flight and TUI/Thomson will increase its capacity to Can-cun with a new Boeing 787 Dreamliner on May 2013. Moreover, will start operations from Heathrow to Mexico City in December 2012 with 3 frequencies per week and will introduce its Boeing 787 Dreamliner in the summer 2013 to increase capacity. These actions will ensure the sustained growth of the number of British passengers to Mexico and will further strengthen the position of the United Kingdom as the third source market of tourists for Mexico, after the USA and Canada.
