Dear Parents and caregivers, HSC Program

We are getting closer and closer to the end of the HSC. The final week of this term sees us launch into the final school-based examinations for many subjects. The remaining school based examinations will occur in Week 5 of Term 3. It is wonderful to see many students in all courses are working hard towards completing assessments tasks and coursework. School reports have been prepared and issued to students and families this week. Please read these documents carefully and ensure you are putting in place strategies your teachers are suggesting to ensure your final stages of study are effective.

I remind students and their families to be aware of the stress and anxiety that can arise as we approach the final stages of the HSC. The very best way to avoid stress is to make a study and revision plan - this will alleviate feelings of stress that arise from poor organisation. If you are experiencing difficulties talk to your Teacher, Year Advisor or a member of the Welfare Team early for assistance. Driving to School

I remind all students and families that students who drive to school MUST provide the school with written permission from their parent or caregiver to drive a car to and from school. In addition this permission must indicate if a parent consents to other student passengers travelling with them. Student passengers must also have written consent to travel in another students car to/from school or for any school related activity. I also remind families of the dangers associated with inexperienced drivers carrying peer-aged passengers. Our community is well served by school buses, and driving to and from school should be avoided. Appropriate permission notes are available from the school office. Year 11 Attendance

A recent review of Year 11 attendance data indicates that too many students are still arriving late to school without an acceptable reason. All students' in Years 7 - 11 are required to attend school for the entire day, even Year 11 students that have a study period in the morning or afternoon. This includes Wednesday until 12.45 pm. I seek the support of all families to ensure their child is adhering to these attendance expectations. Mr Mark Smith, Relieving Principal

Careers Expo @ Goonellabah

Recently a large group of year 10 students attended a Careers expo at Goonellabah, the group participated maturely and enthusiastically in both hands on activities (electrotechnology, simulated spray panting, construction, animal care ) and information gathering activities. Numerous universities and vocational career pathway providers had stalls where they eagerly answered questions, gave advise and supplied valuable information. The information gained will be very helpful as the students prepare to elect subject selection for year 11 and 12. Early next term there will be another opportunity to attend a follow up Careers Expo in Lismore.

Tax File Numbers

Numerous students have been inquiring about Tax File Numbers - this information and much more is on the school careers website www.bbhscareers.com.au. (Tax file information is under the menu bar ‘Important Information’.)

Mr Brian O’Connor, Careers Advisor

Byron Bay High School P&C Association

The parents and citizens association meet on the third Tuesday of every school term month from 7 to 8.30 pm in the school library. All parents and care givers are welcome to attend. The meetings provide an informal opportunity to engage the school principals, teachers and other parents/caregivers and discuss important issues for the school and its students. Any enquires please email [email protected].

Important topics discussed at 17 May meeting included; how the P and C could financially support the mental health first aid courses, what the staff development days entailed and an update on the plans for the new learning centre. We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting 21 June. A new initiative of the P and C is to have a staff member from different faculties present at each session.

Year 10 and 11 Agriculture students have grown beautiful edible flowers. These have been pollinated by our school bees which produce our beautiful school honey which is available at the canteen for $7 per container.

Year 7 HSIE Excursion to Broken Head Nature Reserve. On 17 May all Year 7 pupils took part in an excursion to Broken Head Nature Reserve. The students undertook a range of fieldwork tasks applying the skills they have been developing during class time. On arrival half of the group were greeted by Delta and Nigel from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services who gave engaging presentations to the students. They covered topics including traditional uses of native vegetation, sustainability and custodianship. The remaining half of the group walked through the nature reserve to the lookout and created a field sketch overlooking Kings Beach. After recess the groups swapped and all students had the chance to ask questions of our visitors. The students also discovered some of the Aboriginal history of the area in walking through the reserve where they learned the dreamtime story of The Three Sisters. At lunchtime students enjoyed an amazing BBQ cooked by Brian (Golden Tongs) O’Connor and took the opportunity to rest up before the afternoon session began. Students returned to the school walking along the beach reveling in our pristine coastline and great weather. Once again, it was a fantastic day enjoyed by both students and staff. Mr Galletly and the HSIE staff would like to thank all involved and acknowledge how well the year 7 students conducted themselves throughout the day, well done!

This parenting course is designed to support parents/ carers to understand and respond proactively to the challenges of adolescence, and to help strengthen the parent/ teenager relationship. Topics covered: adolescent development, how relationships are protective, risks teens face, challenges parents face, how parents and teens push each others buttons and how to positively influence your teen.

The Future is Ours

North Coast Future Planning

A couple of weeks ago, 4 BBHS students (myself included) attended the North Coast Future Planning Workshop for high school students, held at Southern Cross University. The aim of the workshop was to gather the views held by the students on how the region should plan its growth in the next 20 years. The students were set a variety of task, which concluded with a presentation by each school group outlining how one aspect of the area should be developed over the next 20 years.

This opportunity was really important to us because it informed us that not only are the local councils looking into and planning for our future, they are also interested in involving the people (my generation) who will be running our area in the coming decades.

The day was a great experience in team building and collaboration as it gave the 4 of us chance to develop and improve eachothers ideas. Additionally, the study of Geography at school equipped us with the skills for situations such as this as we’ve been taught how to effectively communicate, evaluate situations from a range of perspectives and work in a team. Geography also helped to provide us with knowledge of the issues our community will face over the next 20 years such as population growth, infrastructure provision and sustainability.

In conclusion, the workshop was a great success and was a very enjoyable experience. It was the perfect chance for our generation to contribute and mould our own future in the North Coast Region. Hopefully it will become an annual event. By Cooper Motley
