Year 11 Snow Trip 2019

The Annual Byron Bay High School Snow Trip took place for Year 11 last week, with forty eight students making the journey from Byron Bay to Thredbo Ski Resort. An early start of 4am Sunday morning didn’t dampen the excitement and the students were lucky enough to see falling snow Sunday evening, which helped increase the excitement levels.

After a hearty meal Sunday night the group slept well and then they prepared for the lessons Monday morning. With a mix of boarders and skiers most of the first time students had a blast picking up the skills well in the two hour lesson. There were many funny stories told of thrills and spills and the group was full of enthusiasm for the remaining week on the slopes.

As the week progressed the snow skills improved and exploration of the skiing terrain meant more challenges with all students enjoying the variety of runs Thredbo has to offer. The Thredbo Leisure Centre’s heated pool provided welcome relief for the aches and pains each evening before the group meetings and dinner.

With the week drawing to a close the final highlight of the trip was night skiing on the Thursday evening which began with an impressive Fireworks display on the beginner slope outside our accommodation. This was a great addition to the thrill of being on the mountain under lights.

The final morning had the best weather for making the summit to the highest ski lift in Australia. With no wind and brilliant visibility allowing some of the students to ring the bell and soak up the stunning views Thredbo has to offer.

Many of the students with their new found skiing or boarding skills are looking forward to doing a season themselves in a gap year or planning a trip in the future.

Royal Brisbane Show ExcursionA lot of fun was had by all the students who attended the Ekka/Royal Queensland Show! It was a great opportunity to experience the diverse world of Agriculture and see the many displays and forms of entertainment. Some of the Year 7 students who attended said their highlights of the show included a demonstration of cotton being processed and feeding animals at the animal nursery. Mr. Duncan’s passion for aquarium fish was shared with the beautiful displays. Of course, there were many exhibits of all types of farm animals to explore. This included visiting the relatives of our own Anglo Nubian goats and Wyandotte chickens which were on show. Thanks to all for making it a great day!

One Vision ‘Music for Life’ Project

Term 3 has seen Byron Bay High School begin a music project, delivered and facilitated by the One Vision Productions team, from Byron Bay. Twenty-five students between Year 7 and 10 have volunteered to take part. We are now seeing them getting stuck in to the project, pouring out creative ideas all over the place and they are now starting to formulate them into an artistic product of which they will be proud.

One Vision Productions seeks to create change throughout Australia in working with community centres, schools, government organisations and youth agencies to educate and empower youth and communities through their work.

Over a 10 week period, students will identify and discuss issues and themes relevant to their lives, collectively and individually. They will write and record hip hop lyrical compositions, engage in dance and performance art, design and film an accompanying film clip which will then be disseminated through the community using traditional and social media channels. Students learn Ableton Live and create their own beats while being backed by some of the best producers globally.

Through the delivery of hip hop music, music production techniques, and dance and film production workshops, One Vision provides a platform for participants to engage in a project that improves school attendance and engagement, enhances self-esteem, confidence and team work, and allows participants to express themselves through language and movement. The programs are educational, creative, culturally sensitive, engaging, empowering and therapeutic.

One Vision Productions have produced incredible and successful work with many local high schools and we hope that our students will be the next big hit in local youth empowerment and issue based song writing. This project has been developed in consultation with the school to provide additional opportunities for students at our school.

Bill Turner Cup Coffs HarbourThe first game was against Mackillop Catholic School Port Macquarie. The teams were evenly matched in size but our Byron boys played intense and attacking football to be ahead 3:0 at half time. Mackillop came back hard in the second half but with gutsy defending from the Byron boys Mackillop only managed to score one goal, giving Byron a 3:1 win. Hani Addis scored two goals from the striker position - one from a nice through-ball from Harry Spiteri and the other a header from a corner kick. Jack Crabtree headed the ball into the top corner to score the third goal. All boys played very well.

The second game was against Hunter Sports High School from Newcastle and it was a very different story. HSHS had quite a few representative players from academy teams of the Newcastle Jets and the Western Sydney Wanderers, and it showed! Despite HSHS keeping possession of the ball for much of the game, the Byron boys put up a determined fight to keep the score to 4:0. All Byron players put in commendable performances against the bigger and stronger Hunter outfit. Man of the match for Byron was goalkeeper Jackson Luke who was peppered by the opposition and did some spectacular saves. Not far behind was Aaron Spry who did a great job defending against the Hunter attackers.

Unfortunately Mr Schmidt was unable to attend the trip to Coffs Harbour which gave me (Mrs Cranfield) the privilege to take the boys. He was on the phone with calls and texts with words of encouragement and wisdom which gave the Byron boys a lift in both games. Mr Schmidt should be extremely proud of what he and the Byron Bay High School soccer team has achieved.

To make it to the final 8 of the Bill Turner Cup is a fantastic effort considering 850 teams take part. Well done boys, you should be very proud of your achievements.

Sporting ExcellenceSporting excellence hit P3 Recovery Centre at Burleigh Heads Tuesday 27 August. Our students were exposed to hot and cold baths from 10 degrees to 39 degrees ... plenty of screams. Then onto the dry room, normatec boots and sleeves. A great day of education around recovery in sport.

English News - Byron Bay Writers Festival 2019On Thursday 1 August a group of Byron Bay High School students from years 7 to 11 attended the Byron Bay Writers Festival Secondary School day, held at Elements of Byron. The excursion provided the students with the opportunity to meet their much loved literary heroes, as well as to listen to a wide variety of authors and thinkers from the fiction and nonfiction categories.

The day consisted of five sessions, giving students the choice between two speakers for each session. The speakers included the likes of Isobelle Carmody, speaking about the art of storytelling; John Marsden, exploring the art of growing up and the education system; and A. C. Grayling, who talked in detail about the necessity of philosophy in the modern world. Markus Zusak in particular was a highly engaging speaker, who allowed students to understand the keys to effective creative writing through his explanation of a humorous and layered story. Students were most excited for the last speaker of the day, Eddie Woo, who is an enthusiastic mathematician. To the delight of some students, Woo was happy to meet with them after the session, allowing them to ask detailed questions about their shared passions.

Overall, the excursion was a delightful event which saw students from all years able to engage with a wide range of Australian literary figures.

“A future full of potential for Georgia”

Georgia Conechado is in her first year of Engineering Research and Development studies, which she says has been both fun and challenging.

“I really enjoyed a project from one of my first courses, Discovering Engineering, where we worked on building a rover, which is a small autonomous vehicle. When we were finally doing the test through the maze, and seeing something that we actually created and designed ourselves, it was a really great feeling.”

Coming to ANU from Byron Bay is something Georgia says she couldn’t have achieved without scholarship support.

“I was on the lookout for scholarships from Year 11 because I knew that, if I didn’t get a scholarship, it would be really hard for me to do full-time uni. My family’s socio-economic status meant that they couldn’t support me financially through university.”

Not only has scholarship support helped Georgia come to ANU in the first place, it has meant she can fully experience campus life and get more than a degree from her time at university.

“I’m involved with the ANU Filipino Association. My dad’s Filipino, but because I’ve lived with my mum all my life, I haven’t had much of a connection with that side of my family’s culture. I’ve also joined the Engineering Students Society and been to a few of the Japan Club events, because I’m learning Japanese.”

As the recipient of the Female Excellence Scholarship for Engineering, Georgia is keen to point out the positive impact of supporting women to pursue STEM in higher education.

“In an ideal world, if everything was equal, we wouldn’t need scholarships specifically for women. But it’s not equal at the moment. If there’s a problem, you can’t just ignore it and expect it to get better.”

This drive to create a better future is a strong motivator for Georgia, who says she is passionate about renewable energy and social justice issues. She believes it is vital to provide opportunities for promising students.

“Education is one of the fundamental building blocks for making a nation great. There’s so much potential within everyone. If they don’t get opportunities, you are losing potential to make great change in the future.”

Georgia is a recipient of the Regional and Rural Equity Scholarship; Accommodation Equity Scholarship; George Alexander Foundation Scholarship; and Female Excellence Scholarship for Engineering.

Mobile Phone Policy

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Recently the NSW Department of Education undertook a comprehensive study into the impact of the overuse of Mobile/Electronic devices amongst students. The review concluded that there are profound adverse impacts on student’s academic, social and emotional wellbeing when such devices are used for non-educational purposes during school hours. As a result of this current research, and in line with our commitment to providing safe and productive learning spaces for all students, Byron Bay High School has made the proactive step to update our Mobile/Electronic Device Policy which came into effect Term 2 2019. The new policy is as follows:

1 All Mobile/Electronic Devices (including earphones) must be switched off or on silent and placed in the student’s bag before the start of a lesson, assembly, or any leaning space and are to remain in their bag unless the classroom teacher has given permission otherwise.

2 Mobile/Electronic Devices in the classroom (without teacher permission) will be confiscated by the class teacher and can be collected at the front office by the student at 3:25pm. If phone is confiscated on multiple occasions, a call home will be made.

3 Refusal to hand a Mobile/Electronic Device to the classroom teacher will result in a detention issued by the classroom teacher and referral to a Head Teacher who will confiscate the device and can be collected at the front office by the student at 3:25pm.

4 Refusal to hand a Mobile/Electronic Device over to a Head Teacher will result in a warning of suspension and referral to the Deputy Principal who will confiscate the device for parent collection.

5 Refusal to hand a Mobile/Electronic Device over to the Deputy Principal will result in immediate suspension.

We appreciate that parents and guardians may need to contact their child throughout the day, and in support of our new policy, we kindly ask that this communication be made through the front office by phoning 6685 8188. Messages will be promptly passed on to students.

At Byron Bay High School we are unreservedly committed to building safe and supportive learning environments which promote academic excellence, innovation and an appreciation of diversity, and we trust that we have your full support in this initiative.

Yours in partnership,Byron Bay High School
