The Future is Ours

News from the Deputies Desks Year 8 and Year 10 students have now made their subject selections for 2017. Any student who has a concern about their pattern of subjects will need to see myself or Mr Lee as soon as possible.

Both of these year groups will be involved in targeted welfare workshops during Term 3. Year 8 will participate in a Drug Awareness workshop in Week 8 of this school term. Year 10 will be participating in violence prevention workshops.

Candy Baker is inspiring fourteen Year 10 students to explore their individual creativity. These students are participating in workshops lead by Candy to expand their thinking patterns and learn to approach work from different angles.

Year 12 students are heading down their last stretch as students at Byron Bay High School. All students have been issued a Tutorial Timetable for the remainder of this term. The timetable outlines all topics to be covered in each class in every subject. The term ends with our Year 12 Breakfast and Presentation Assembly. We look forward to celebrating these students’ schooling achievements together as a school community.

Ms Janine Marcus, Deputy Principal Years 8, 10 and 12 Year 7 are hitting their strides and becoming very comfortable within the school, it's hard to believe that it's past halfway! I am proud of their commitment to the school and all of their lessons. We are pleased to announce that we raised $800 from the Showcase and we put this towards a native bush tucker garden which many of the students have shown great enthusiasm in watering!

Year 9 students have some significant assessment tasks this term. At this time students should be working on their Science Student Research Project, a task that asks students to design and carry out a scientific investigation. Mathematics will have a class test in Week 8 on the topic of Earning Money and Investigating Data. Students and parents are reminded they can find course and assessment information for all Year 9 courses now at the school website Year 9 2016 Topic and Task Maps

Year 11 examinations will be held in the last two weeks of this school term. This will be the final assessment for Year 11! Term 4 sees the formal commencement of Year 12 (HSC). Year 11 Reports will be issued in Week 4 of Term 4.

Mr Mark Smith, Deputy Principal Years 7, 9 and 11

Year 6 Transition Project

What would a waterpark in Byron Bay look like?

Over the last few months Year 6 students from the local area have been working on a Transition Project with Mr Galletly from Byron Bay High School to support their move into Year 7. All students involved have been using Edmodo, an educational social networking site, to share ideas and help one another with their work.

Part of the project involved creating a solution to the question: “What would a waterpark in Byron Bay look like?’ On Wednesday 10 August the students visited Byron Bay High School to present their work and meet their future friends and teachers. The quality of work was outstanding, innovative solutions using sustainable ideas and imaginative models, booklets and Minecraft projects were presented with confidence and enthusiasm throughout the morning.

As you can see from the photos, the students worked extremely hard to produce such well-crafted and impressive solutions to the issue. Year 6 students peer assessed each other’s work in small mixed school groups, assisted by Year 10 students. Many of these Year 10 students will become mentors and accompany the Year 7 on the 7-11 camp in 2016.

During the afternoon, whilst the rest of the school was taking part in sport, the Year 6 students completed a Treasure Hunt in the school grounds, assisted by their Year 10 mentors.

Congratulations to all students who took part and presented themselves so well, Byron Bay High School is looking forward to welcoming you all again soon.

The next opportunity for Year 6 students to visit Byron Bay High School will be in Term 4 when they will accompany their parents to an information morning.

Mr Stuart Galletly, Head Teacher HSIE

Year 12 Farm Product Study

The Year 12 students for their Farm Product Study studied the production of milk after it leaves the Farm gate. They were given a behind the scenes tour of the Norco Ice Cream factory at Lismore by the Factory manager Mark Harrison. It was an amazing experience to observe the advanced technology and engineering in the value adding of milk.

They later had tour of the pecan orchard and the processing factory at the Pantry Eltham. The day was an eye opener into the technology and science that is applied in biological farming practices and value adding of products in Agribusiness.
