Last year realized a number of successes in our industry: Tourism statistics surpassed prior years in economic impact with increased visitors to our region, ultimately providing a larger return on the state’s investment.

I’d like to think that our Tourism Bureau played animportant role in this development through our on-going partnerships within the communities that weserve. “Welcome to Marion County” who recentlyjoined our service area, bringing our region to ninecounties covering over 5,000 square miles.

Our “News from the Road” magazine won awards for the third year in a row. We partneredwith the Alton Regional CVB to reform the Southwestern Regional Tourism DevelopmentOffice to assist in marketing specific projects. Indicative of growth, the staff was expandedby two with plenty of work to keep three interns busy. We toured and met with ten commu-nities this past year for a total of sixty cities visited within our region!

With a view to 2006, the growth and development in Southwestern Illinois is definitely on anupward climb! Visit our website @ www.thetourismbureau.org

The much anticipated opening of the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta,IL, in August has prompted partnerships throughout the region: Illinois Department ofNatural Resources, Amateur Trapshooting Association, MidAmerica Airport, Vandalia BusLines, etc. are but a few examples of regional cooperation.

Our Visitors Guide 2006 is aptly named, “A virtual canvas ofCountry, Cultures and Character,” with all the diversity that urban and rural communities can provide. Foryour convenience, check out the newly designed pull-out map with 400 events on the 2006 Calendar.

Why not take a few hours, an overnight, or several days to experience all that awaits you in Southwestern Illinois. Truly, it will be your pleasure…See you down the road!

Blessings to you and yours,jo kathmann, Executive Director
