Gillian Sorensen, 2014 AL Fellow
Gillian recently co-authored an op-ed for the Washington Post, “A woman should lead the U.N.” alongside Jean Krasno who is a lecturer at the City College of New York’s Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership. In the piece, Gillian and Jean call for a more open, extensive search for U.N. Secretary-General that includes the numerous distinguished female leaders who have acquired deep experi-ence as presidents, prime ministers, chancellors, foreign ministers and diplomats who possess the key qualifications for this challenging post.

Carrin and Marissa recently participated in a panel hosted by the Center for Women in Law at the University of Texas School of Law, featuring a discussion of the global empowerment of women and the life-changing ALI Fellowship. The Center is dedicated to the success of women in the law profession. Every two years the Center, of which Carrin is a co-founder, holds an invitation-only Women’s Power Summit on Law and Leadership. The Center hosts approximately 200 women from around the country -- female lawyers with leading roles in the profession, and key women’s empowerment activists – and feature prominent speakers. This year’s conference featured a social justice component, with a panel that Carrin moderated featuring Marissa Wesely and Dr. Rangita deSilva de Alwis, both leaders in global women’s empowerment.

Nina Lahoud, 2013 AL Fellow
Nina recently returned from the Seeds of Peace launch conference of “GATHER +962: Connecting Global Changemakers” at the Dead Sea in Jordan, an event that brought together over 200 young emerging leaders and change-makers from conflict-affected areas of the Middle East/Asia and established leaders in the fields of diplomacy, education, social en-trepreneurship, community advocacy, women’s empowerment, business, technology, media and philanthropy. Over three intense days, participants engaged in inspiring discussions, interactive activities, skill-building workshops, and an initiative pitch competition that gave a platform to these passionate emerging leaders and their innovative ideas for positive social
change. Fifteen different panel discussions focused on how gender, technology, entrepre-neurship, and media can create social change and contribute to peacebuilding. Nina was invited as a speaker on a “Gender and Con-flict” panel and also as a speaker during the first evening plenary session on “Storytelling: Lessons Learned, Off the Record” where she shared her “public service” journey of more than three decades of work with the United Nations, including in various conflict-affected countries. She also referred to the incredible experience of her ALI Fellowship and gender justice project, and discussed ALI’s focus on encouraging ALI Fellows to contribute to tackling domestic and global issues -- which underscored the importance of “public ser-vice,” dialogue, and partnerships.
Anne and David were both recently featured on the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s EdCast, a weekly series of podcasts available on the Harvard University iTunes U page that features a 15-20 minute conversation with thought leaders in the field of education from across the country and around the world.
Anne and Chris Spence, an educational developer, reflected on ways of improving disability awareness on 2015 World Autism Awareness Day for their EdCast, “Navigating Disability.”
In David’s edition of the EdCast, “Write the World,” he shared his vision for helping students develop the writing strategies and communication tools essential for success in school, career, and life.

Anne Punzak Marcus, 2012 AL Fellow
Paul Irving, 2010 AL Fellow
Paul recently penned a blog piece for the Huff-ington Post, “Hillary Is In -- And Her Age Is No Disqualifier.” Paul states that age is an asset and not a disqualifier and that Hillary or any other presidential prospect should not be criti-cized for engaging and competing at older age. To the contrary, any such individual should be applauded for staying involved and for ongoing commitment and interest in purposeful contri-bution as a lifelong pursuit.

Message from the Chair
On March 25 - 27, Harvard School of Public Health professor and ALI Co-Chairs Barry Bloom and Howard K. Koh, MD, co-chaired and organized the “Ongoing Systems Challenges in US Health Care” Think Tank. The event, focused upon health care reform and its implica-tions for the US, was comprised of three introductory keynote talks presenting health care reform in the US, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Develop-ment (OECD) and Turkey. Attendees spent Friday morn-ing participating in breakout sessions, formulating ideas and developing strategies to improve the US health care system. Participants then gathered in the afternoon for a rich and prolific discussion of their ideas and findings. Thank you to all those who participated - from faculty to industry leaders, and AL Fellows past and present - to make this year’s Health Care Think Tank such a success and a robust catalyst for continued project ideas and formulation. I look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming Cross-Cohort Exchange.
