We are thrilled to present our 2017 line-up of leading Australian authors - John Flanagan, Jacqueline Harvey, Jack Heath, George Ivanoff, Louise Park and Michael Wagner. The diverse range of events is sure to engage and inspire your students to discuss books, writing and ideas.

Our program of author presentations and creative writing workshops has something to enthuse both boys and girls from Year 1 to Year 8.

Jack HeathWrite your own dangerous story – Year 3-4Jack Heath gives you the beginning of a story… you give him the rest! In this fast and funny workshop kids will write action-packed stories, share them with friends and learn tips for making their words exciting.Action story mashup – Year 5-6Jack Heath wrote his first novel by borrowing the plot from Metal Gear Solid, the setting from Aliens and the main character from Final Fantasy VIII. Now you have the chance to make your own Frankenstory! But be warned, you’ll be racing against the clock – and competing with Jack to see who can write the best story mashup.

Jacqueline HarveyGoodies, baddies and everyone in between: how to create interesting and memorable characters – Year 5-6Create interesting and believable characters with great names, dropping them into a plot and seeing where they go, understanding what makes a great character and the role of heroes & villains, sidekicks.

Write well: strategies for effective creative writing – Year 3-4Discuss your ideas, do lots of writing and share your work with others. This workshop explores, show, don’t tell; character development, plotting, planning, great beginnings and epic endings.

Michael WagnerExciting writing – Year 1-6Using his most popular and recent books as guides, Michael humorously and clearly explains where ideas come from, how ‘bad’ ideas are often the best, how plots can be quickly constructed around almost any idea, why having a creative outlet is wonderful for your brain and much, much more. Michael’s talks inspire students to read, write and create.

Louise ParkDinosaurs, beasts and boy spies; space agents, ballerinas and secret diaries: building worlds, characters and adventures – Year 1-4Louise shares where she gets inspiration for her series fiction (including Zac Power), how she creates memorable worlds and characters, and builds drama and tension. Students will even get a sneak peek of the creative process for her current work in progress, launching in July 2017. This session includes a talk, a reading and plenty of audience participation.

George IvanoffYou choose & RFDS: story choices, research and remote settings – Year 3-6Discover the inspiration and writing process behind the popular You Choose series and the Royal Flying Doctor Service adventures. George will also read from his books, demonstrate his story maps and show you holiday snaps of locations that ended up as settings in his stories.

Workshops

George IvanoffChoose your own stories – Year 3-4 and Year 5-6In his You Choose series, George Ivanoff creates narratives where the stories go in different directions, depending on the reader’s choices. In this workshop George will show how narratives are built from a series of choices and consequences – and then help students to create their own story.

Louise ParkMemorable, believable characters: developing them and showing them to your readers – Year 5-6How do you develop believable and memorable characters? Using the ‘Read like a Writer’ technique students will analyse techniques writers use to ‘show’ rather than ‘tell’ to develop their characters. They will then have the opportunity to apply workshop skills and writing tips to their own writing. This session includes some role play.

Write your own Zac Power adventure story – Year 3-4The 12-year-old boy spy, Zac Power, is one of the best-known book characters today. In this workshop students will explore the narrative structure of the Zac Power Test Drives and Spy Recruit series, then scaffold and write their very own Zac Power story. This session includes some role play.

Author presentations

John FlanaganJoin the Brotherband – Year 3-8John Flanagan’s Ranger’s Apprentice and Brother-band adventure series have sold more than eight million copies worldwide. Hear of the inspiration behind his tales of Wolfships, epic battles and treachery; a session that will delight fans and is sure to inspire more. Come armed with cut-throat questions!

Jack HeathPranking the Prime Minister, and other hilarious stories – Year 3-8Jack Heath shot to stardom as a teenager when his first action-packed novel became an international bestseller. 18 books and many crazy adventures later, he’s ready to share the surprising things he learned along the way. This session will enthuse even the most reluctant reader.

Jacqueline HarveyThe stories behind the stories – Year 3-6Hear about the inspirations which have shaped Jacqueline Harvey’s writing career and how her life and experiences have influenced the development of her characters, Alice-Miranda, Clementine Rose and the huge supporting casts in both series: male, female, young and old. Jacqueline’s high energy, interactive presentation will have your students in stitches!

George Ivanoff

George Ivanoff, a Melbourne children’s author, has written over 100 books, including the You Choose series and the Royal Flying Doctor Service Adventures. As a kid, George loved reading interactive books, where he got to make decisions about the direction of the story. He has had more fun plotting and writing the You Choose books than pretty much anything else, and writing the RFDS Adventures has opened his eyes to the amazing work done by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. George drinks too much coffee, eats too much chocolate and watches too much Doctor Who. Students will love his sessions that are presented with a dramatic flair.

Louise Park

Louise Park draws from a strong background in education, literacy and publishing to produce her blockbuster bestselling series Zac Power Test Drives and Spy Recruit, Boy vs Beast, Star Girl, Bella Dancerella and her latest series Harriet Clare. She's also knee-deep running her own publishing business, Paddlepop Press, and the new joint-venture publishing group, Stories Inc. Louise has a passion for promoting literacy and is the ambassador for the ‘Bright Futures are Written by Hand’ and the ‘Five from Five’ Literacy Project. She writes under her own name as well as the hugely successful pseudonyms: H. I. Larry, Mac Park and Poppy Rose.

Michael Wagner

Michael Wagner is a Melbourne-based author of more than 70 books for children including the much loved, 20-book, Maxx Rumble series, the CBCA Notable Picture Book of the Year Why I Love Footy, the popular Undys series, Bear Make Den (a picture book co-written with his partner, Jane Godwin), and his naughty new series, So Wrong. Before becoming an author, Michael worked as a radio broadcaster with the ABC, wrote and produced animation for TV, wrote comedy for Brian Dawe, grew up in a housing commission flat in Melbourne, and played in a band that almost became famous.

John Flanagan

John Flanagan's Ranger’s Apprentice adventure series originally comprised 20 short stories that John wrote to encourage his son to enjoy reading. Now sold in more than 30 countries, the series regularly appears on the New York Times’ bestseller lists and has been shortlisted for children's book awards worldwide. In 2011 John launched his latest series, Brotherband, which is set in the same world as Ranger’s Apprentice. John, a former television and advertising writer, lives with his wife in Sydney.

Jacqueline Harvey

Jacqueline Harvey is an award winning, bestselling children’s author. Following a twenty-year teaching career she became a full-time writer in 2012 and has written 31 books for young readers. Her picture book, The Sound of the Sea received an Honour Book in the 2006 Children’s Book Council awards while the Alice-Miranda and Clementine Rose series’ have both received numerous short listings and awards. A highly experienced presenter, Jacqueline has delivered hundreds of talks and workshops at schools and festivals around the world and is equally adept working with boys and girls. Her books have been translated into numerous languages and Alice-Miranda is in development as a television series.

Jack Heath

Jack Heath is the pen-name of an award-winning author of children’s and teen fiction. His bestselling novels include The Cut Out, 300 Minutes of Danger and the Countdown To Danger series. He wrote his first book in high school and sold it to a publisher at age 18. His books have been translated into several languages and optioned for film and TV. Jack regularly tours Australia to teach creative writing and share his love of literature. His face paced novels and enthusiastic presentations have helped thousands of young people to get hooked on reading.

Free when accompanying students. A ratio of 1:10 has been allowed.

* Teacher/adult supervision is required at all sessions. If parents are bringing small groups it is expected that at least one adult will remain for the duration of the session.

Unfortunately we have had to increase our prices this year due to library spaces being unavailable and new ticketing procedures. Ticket prices have been set at cost recovery only.

Venues

All sessions take place in Newcastle's Cultural Precinct.

As Newcastle Region Library will be closed for renovations during March 2017 we have utilized rooms at City Hall, the Civic Theatre Playhouse and Newcastle Museum. All are within 5 minutes' walk of each other and close to Civic Park (an excellent location for lunch and play for the students).

Risk Assessments are available upon request.

Bus drop off is available close to each venue.

MacLean's Booksellers will be at the Festival on both days with a large selection of each authors books and there will be opportunities for book purchases and author signings between sessions.

How to get hereThe festival is held in the Civic Precinct, which is close to bus links and the bustling Honeysuckle and Darby Street eatery strips.

Please note, the rail line has been cut at Hamilton Station and passengers cannot alight at Civic or Newcastle stations. Buses are available at Hamilton Station for transfers to the city. For updates about track work and for timetable information see www.sydneytrains.info.

Newcastle Taxis bookings can be made by phoning 133 300 or book online at www.newcastletaxis.com.au.

You are encouraged to leave your car at home, especially on Saturday, 2 April, as community markets will be held in Civic Park and parking spaces will be hard to secure. The festival recommends all-day parking at the Wilson Parking station on the corner of Perkins and King streets, Newcastle. For more details see huntercarparks.com.au andwilsonparking.com.au.

Venue & Precinct InformationThe Civic Precinct is located between Hunter and King streets. There is wheelchair access to City Hall via the Wheeler Place entrance and there is an internal lift. If you require assistance, please email admin@newcastlewritersfestival.org.au and the festival can arrange for a volunteer to be available.

The main information desk is located in Wheeler Place and is staffed by volunteers. Programs and session information is available. Due to restoration work at City Hall the King Street driveway will be closed. Access will be limited to the stairs. Please use the Wheeler Place entrance if you have mobility concerns.

Use the maps below as a guide to the venue to locate individual rooms.

Sound and video recording is not permitted without approval from the festival director. Please email manager@newcastlewritersfestival.org.au.

At the conclusion of each session, all seats are to be vacated. This enables sound and stage staff to set up for the following session. Doors will open 20 minutes before the start of each session.
