the city of Onkaparinga is proud to present the seventh

biennial South australian Readers’ & writers’ festival.

the festival is a celebration of writing as a valuable form of cultural expression and seeks to remind us all of the simple pleasure of reading. this year’s program promises to offer some of the most enjoyable, engaging and informative events we’ve ever presented. there’s great diversity in the program to appeal to readers, writers, poets, cooks, artists and social media fans, as well as those interested in the spiritual and metaphysical. with something for just about every age and taste there’s bound to be something to engage, educate and entertain you.

the festival will culminate with a celebration at the arts centre at Port Noarlunga where we’ll announce the winner of the People’s choice award. Popular australian author Nick Earls will deliver the keynote address and be part of the panel discussion Dirty Little Secrets. the always thought provoking and entertaining great debate will wrap up the day with six people going head to head on this year’s topic, That everyone has a book in them.

featuring six books by new and emerging Sa authors, read over 18 months by 32 book groups, with 300 books circulated and over 300 votes cast. who will win the 2013 People’s choice award (Pca)?

Sandy Verschoor, chair of the Sa writers’ centre, leads the panel of Pca authors as they discuss the experiences of writing their first novel and what they are up to

now. attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments to the authors.

Ever wondered what authors read behind closed doors? do they stick to award winning literature?

facilitator Sarah tooth, director of the South australian writers’ centre, explores the secret bookshelves of david cornish, mark dapin, Nick Earls, Victoria Purman, tim Sinclair and Ruth Starke.

Nick Earls will take us on an entertaining and informative journey through the process of novel writing. from the first idea, planning, drafting, editing and cover design, all the way to the final stop on the promotional trail.

2PM – PoeMs & PRose

Jude aquilina and margaret merrilees will talk about their new books from wakefield Press. Jude is the editor of Tadpoles in the Torrens, a collection of poems for younger readers from well-known South australian children’s poets. margaret is the author of the novel The First Week, which won the unpublished manuscript award at adelaide writers’ week.

3PM – the gReat debate: that eveRyone has a book in theM…

they say every picture tells a story, so perhaps it follows that every person has a story. But is that story good enough to be classed as a book? that’s what our highly regarded and experienced debaters will be challenging each other on this year at our great debate. does everyone have a book in them or can most of us be summed up with a few witty one liners at best?

what’s youRs is Mine: does the idea of intellectual property really protect authors these days?

have you written a great story and worry someone else will rip it off? do you want to adapt an existing work that you did not originally create? there is often uncertainty about how to safeguard artistic ideas or make good use of work by others – and whether it is actually possible to do so in a practical sense anymore.

this session looks at the current state of practice and the law regarding protection of written work to see whether there is a clear and useful path through the confusion over intellectual property (IP).

woRkshoP: FaCts about FiCtion, FiCtions about FaCt

adelaide advertiser columnist and award-winning novelist mark dapin gives a workshop on applying the techniques of journalism to fiction and the tools of fiction to journalism. he will talk about the basics of writing professionally, focusing on storytelling, use of metaphor and simile, the importance of a strong opening, and his own, sometimes disastrous experiences interviewing celebrities such as Gordon Ramsay, who threw him out of his house after only sixteen-and-a-half minutes.

comics are an engaging story-telling medium, stretching from three panel newspaper strips to 3kg graphic novels. Greg holfeld will demonstrate the narrative tools of comics, reveal his own processes and take participants through exercises designed to expand their skills in storytelling, be they wildly humorous or darkly tragic.

meet mark dapin, award winning novelist and columnist for the adelaide advertiser. mark’s long career as feature writer, columnist and novelist has provided him with an almost endless supply of interesting and often hilarious tales.

mark’s writing has been collected in the anthologies Best australian humorous writing 2009, Best australian Essays 2010 and Best australian Stories 2011. his first novel King of the Cross, won a Ned Kelly award and his most recent book Spirit House, was long-listed for the miles franklin Literary award.
