Sandakan Memorial Service
Everyone is welcome to attend the Sandakan Memorial Service at Sandakan Park, Abel Street, Boyup Brook on 8th September 2015 at 11am.
Light refreshments will be provided at the conclusion of the Ceremony.
National Hockey Call Up for Angela
After a stellar performance at the School Sport Australia 16 Years and Under Hockey Championship in August, Boyup Brook’s Angela Chilwell has been named in the Australian Schoolgirls hockey team to travel to South Africa in June 2016.
The not-yet-16 year old scored two goals in the week long Championship in which Western Australia finished fourth.
Playing at the Perth Hockey Stadium, Angela said, “It was awesome to play in front of a home crowd. It made the game a lot easier feeding off the crowd's encouragement.”
In preparation for the Championship, Angela focused on her personal fitness, nutrition requirements and skills, along with training every Sunday morning and Wednesday night and playing in occasional scratch matches.
Currently a Year 10 boarder at St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls, balancing her school work, Club hockey, State hockey and other commitments (including a school rowing team) was a challenge. She said, “I made sure whenever I had spare time I would get work done to keep on top.” This meant late nights, early mornings and even turning down social outings with her boarding mates to be at her best for trials and scratch matches - a real tribute to her dedication.
But it was all worth it with Angela saying “It was one of the most enjoyable hockey tournaments, I loved every second of it.”
Angela joins two of her Western Australian teammates, Isabella Suleski and Renee Rockliffe in the eighteen girl national team. When her name was announced, the teenager squealed with her teammates and found herself holding back tears of happiness.
Mum, Ros Chilwell was also quite emotional as she witnessed the announcement, but overwhelmed with absolute pride and excitement, especially as WA had not done as well in the event as they would have liked. Ros commented, “It was also a great sense of pride to our community, as a lot of Angela's attributes have evolved from wonderful role models coming through the Boyup Junior and Women's teams, and she will always be very proud of that.”
A meeting was held during the event for parents to outline pathways for the athletes and it was stressed how important it is to keep a balance of activities in their lives, to which Ros said, “It looks like she won’t be giving up her spot on the tailing cradle anytime soon!”
As the 2015 recipient of the Shire of Boyup Brook’s Young Achiever of the Year, Angela continues to demonstrate the qualities which earned her this title and with her whole-hearted commitment and work ethic, she is destined to achieve great results.

My Inbox….
Irony is a funny thing. As I wrote the editorial for last month, we hadn’t had rain, but the day we printed it bucketed! Someone was trying to have the last laugh! But Spring is here and personally, it’s my favourite time of year.
September is a very busy month in Boyup as we finish up another school term and many winter sports. All the best to our juniors who are competing in football, hockey and netball finals.
The Sandakan Memorial service will be held on September 8 at 11am. It is a very special event on the Boyup Brook calendar and I encourage you to attend.
The Local Government election is also around the corner. If you would like to nominate for Council, please contact the Shire.
The October Gazette will be in the hands of my trusty CRC staff as I head to Brisbane to compete in the National Masters Hockey Championships. Please direct any queries to Jackki.
Wishing all of the Dad’s out there a happy Fathers Day!
Cheers, Jodi

Seeking Stories of Former Students
Do you know a former student of the Boyup Brook District High School who has achieved great things?
As part of a small grant obtained by the BBDHS P&C, some of the more notable, interesting, colourful, awarded and fabulous members of the school alumni are to be honoured.
A Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal grant has allowed us to fund an ‘avenue of honour’ project, to tie in with the school’s ‘Masterplan’ improvement blueprint. As suggested in the plan, an avenue of trees has recently been planted along the driveway into the Middle School campus, off Beatty Street. Each tree will be accompanied by a small plaque to celebrate the life of a former student of the school.
So, with the trees now in, we need to identify some worthy ex-students, whose achievements in life can be documented and listed on the ‘alumni honour plaques’.
The project aims to help us celebrate the long, proud history of education in Boyup Brook.
From the school’s inception in 1900, thousands of students have completed some, or all, of their education there.
If you know of any alumni, from any one of the decades of the BBDHS history, who has achieved something fabulous, please let us know. Whether it be an achievement of international significance, one of great local value, an act of immeasurable valour or kindness, or an achievement made despite great adversity, we’d love to know about it.
The name, estimated date of attendance at the school and a brief description of the person’s life is all we require.
To make a suggestion, please contact project coordinator, Jennifer Staniforth-Smith, via phone on 9767 1329 or email [email protected]. Alternatively, just send a note in to the school.
Please make your suggestions by or before September 30.
The BBDHS alumni community is now spread far and wide, with many great stories evolving from their achievements. Please help us tell a few of these stories as part of this simple project.

Waste Collection/Recycling Council resolved to contract with Perthwaste for the kerbside bin collection services and for the supply of bins. The current arrangement with Warren Blackwood Waste is set to end with the last service from that company Thursday 17 September 2015. Warren Blackwood Waste will be removing its wheelie bins on that day or sometime soon afterward.
Council is purchasing a new stock of bins and each property to be serviced will receive a red topped bin for general waste and a yellow topped bin for recycling. These new bins will be distributed before the first Perthwaste service is conducted in the week Commencing 21/9/2015. Collection day will move from Thursday to Wednesday and the first service with Perthwaste will be Wednesday 23/9/2015. The service that week will be the general waste and the recycling, and so you will need to put both bins out that day. The following week - Waste only will be collected on Wednesday 30 /9/2015 and the week after – Waste and Recycling collected Wednesday 7/10/2015. From then Waste Weekly and Recycling Fortnightly.
Warren Blackwood Waste are looking to place some of its old bin stock in the Shire transfer station and make arrangements for the Lions to sell them on their behalf. Assuming the arrangements are made, there should be an opportunity to purchase used wheelie bins at the transfer station from late September.
The new services will be provided to properties already serviced by the current kerbside bin collection done by Warren Blackwood Waste.
Sandakan Memorial Service Everyone is welcome to attend the Sandakan Memorial Service at Sandakan Park, Abel Street, Boyup Brook on 8th September 2015 at 11am. Light refreshments will be provided at the conclusion of the Ceremony.

I was fortunate to attend the WALGA Convention week with Cr Kaltenrieder, Cr Aird and Cr O’Hare. It was great to liaise with like minded people from other Councils, especially country residents who have very similar issues of population decline, medical services and quality of life generally. Justin Langer was the guest speaker at the breakfast and entertained us all with lessons on life and raising 4 daughters.
Finally it is good to see more rain around lately, some crops are looking very good but if we don’t get more, there could be water problems next summer.
The Sandakan Memorial Service will be held on the 8th September 2015 along with the Sandakan scholarship being presented.
Until next time take care and God bless.

Landmark Dalgety South West Wool Store
The rise in the wool market has flowed through to local wool stores, with the Landmark Dalgety South West Wool Store having outgrown its original premises to recently relocate to a new, larger site at Unit 1 /13 Rose Street in Bridgetown.
Manager of the Wool Store, Matthew Chambers was born and raised in Boyup Brook and has been with Landmark for four years. He said, “The business was established three years ago and has grown quickly to now do over 800 bales a year.”
The wool store offers private wool buying with on farm pick up and a 48 hour EFT payment, as well as wool brokering including forward selling. Matthew offers a reliable, trustworthy and prompt service for all sizes of wool growers. “Whether it’s the five pet sheep, the mob of fifty from the hobby block, the ten butts of bits and pieces clogging up your shed, the time has never been better to turn it into money with a strong wool market,” he said.
“Our forward selling options are simple, fair and transparent with growers being able to lock in a price up to three years in advance.”
The Boyup community is one that Matthew is very proud to be a part of. He said, “Being the fourth generation of Chambers in the area and now raising three of my own children, I don’t think there is a better place to live.”
Matthew is the Vice Chairman for the Rylington Park Management Committee, a steward for the wool section at the Dinninup show and also a committee member on the RAS wool section and Young judges section. He is also the Over-judge for the Junior wool judging at the Wagin Woolarama, the Perth Royal and Dinninup Shows.
Matthew can be contacted on 0467 781 166. Deliveries to the store can be arranged by appointment.

Blackwood Taste Popular
The seventh annual Taste of the Blackwood Festival drew record numbers of visitors to the Bridgetown Civic Centre on Saturday, 8 August.
Coordinator Libby Burgess said “We were thrilled to draw nearly 700 visitors – our best one day figures so far. We are going to start planning our 2016 event immediately and try to make it bigger and better again.”
In a celebration of the Blackwood Valley, indoor stalls showcased the quality, diversity and value of local products with a broad variety of items such as cheese, honey, sourdough bread and award winning wines, to name only a few.
The large range of free presentations and workshops including the basics of beekeeping, making natural lipbalm and permaculture were well attended by both adults and children.
Stallholder Chris Shedley of Shedley Wines noted “I think Taste of the Blackwood is a great event, wonderful for bringing visitors into first hand contact with our amazing local producers.”
Sponsors of the 2015 event include: Blackwood Valley Wine Industry Association, South West Development Commission, Label Magic, Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes, Bridgetown Party Hire.
Soil Health Doctor Well Received
Over ninety attendees braved the cold to attend the recent Soil Health Forum featuring soil specialist Dr Maarten Stapper last month at Rylington Park.
Organised by the Blackwood Basin Group (BBG) with support from the South West Catchments Council, funded by the Australian Governments Regional Landcare Facilitator Program, this workshop was Dr Stappers’ only South West appearance.
“The event was a huge success with in-field demonstrations, practical information and engaging speakers,” said Sara Dulex, BBG Project Officer.
Dr Stapper spoke on improving the profitability of farms by harnessing the power of natural soil processes and maximising soil fertility to receive, store and transmit energy to support plant growth.
Personal case studies presented by wheatbelt farmer Di Haggerty and local Moodiarrup farmer Geoff Whitaker were extremely popular and demonstrated how the soil health knowledge could be applied in the farm context.
“You can judge the success of a workshop predominantly by two things – attendance numbers and participant feedback forms,” said Sara. “When these show improved knowledge and willingness to implement this on-farm, you know that you are on the right track with topical information and skills sharing.’
A sundowner provided by the Boyup Brook Co-op at the end of the day gave participants a great chance to ask questions of the presenters and discuss all they had learnt. There was also a great deal of networking between landholders throughout the day on past learnings and future plans; this is a key reason for forums being so important.
Sara thanked the presenters and all those who attended for making the event such a success.
With such a demand for new and innovative information on agricultural techniques, the BBG is keen to look into running workshops on similar topics in the future. If you would like to suggest future workshop topics, or keep up to date with upcoming events and workshops, please contact the BBG on 9765 1555 or email [email protected].

Wildflower Watch
Did you know that photographic records of 180 wildflowers found in the Boyup Brook town bush blocks can be viewed at the Visitor Centre?
These are only the tip of the iceberg but a useful beginning for those wanting to identify plants.
September and October are the peak months with over 50 in each month but many are ground hugging plants with small flowers, so carrying a good magnifying glass is a worthwhile decision.
Some favourites are Cowslip, Donkey and Purple Pansy Orchids; several different Hibbertias with their yellow buttercup flowers; blue Dampiera; a number of Hakeas; Granny Bonnets with their distinctive patterning under the petal; Pimelea; Purple Tassels; the bright yellow leafless globe pea; yellow conostylis (hairy leafed variety) and the first of the trigger plants.
CWA Celebrates 85 Years
The 85th birthday of the Boyup Brook branch of the Country Women’s Association was celebrated in the Old Country Women’s Rooms. Their guest Speaker was Mrs Margaret Sullivan, the Pacific Area President.
Mrs Sullivan spoke on some areas having water and other health problems. She also congratulated Boyup Brook on their eighty five years and wished them many more to come.
Dorothy Ricetti attended the conference, but unfortunately Tanya Newman was unable to attend. Dorothy remarked that the conference was very fruitful motion-wise. With many guest speakers and local choirs to entertain.
There are other branch functions to go to. Our next raffle was for the Sandakan Scholarship, on 27 August.
Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month. Everyone welcome. Contact Tanya Newman 9765 2867, Ruth Clark 0413 847 365 and Dorothy Ricetti 9765 1760.

APRA AMCOS Music Grant
The Country Music Club of Boyup Brook would like to acknowledge a successful funding application from APRA AMCOS for our program of music workshops.
APRA AMCOS helps music creators get paid for their work and give music users easy ways to legally play and copy what they like. Royalties keep the music coming and ensure the industry’s future.
The program is designed to support APRA AMCOS members and to nurture the development and skills of the Australian song writing and composing community.
During the 2016 Boyup Brook Country Music Festival workshops will provide the opportunity to learn how the music industry really works from Industry professionals.
This will allow sharing of insights and incredible experiences, providing some great networking prospects and will allow songwriters and composers to work with industry professionals to gain experience, inspiration and new ideas.
The aim is that the workshops will be ‘owned’ by the participants, and that there will be a real sense of purpose in achieving personal goals, unlocking potential and releasing inhibitions enabling them to enjoy a ‘total’ experience.
The skills development sessions are professional, very intensive and hands on and people will go away not only with a definite idea of where to go next, but practical tools to help them get there.

Hopes for Further Funds
The Blackwood Basin Group (BBG) staff have been hard at work since the 2015 State NRM Community Action Grants opened in mid-August.
With many farmers in the Boyup Brook Shire wanting to address land degradation issues on their property, it was up to the BBG project team to get the applications in within the very short timeframe.
The BBG submitted four applications in total, with three focused on fencing off degraded riparian and remnant vegetation areas on private property in combination with revegetation work in order to address erosion, biodiversity and habitat decline, and nutrient run-off into waterways. If successful in attaining funding, these grants will assist farmers in the Benjinup, Dinninup and Scotts Brook localities.
The fourth application was an extension of the BBG’s flagship Waterbird project in Greenbushes. To achieve the vision of creating a wetland mosaic across the historical mining landscape, the BBG is hoping to extend weed control, revegetation and scientific monitoring to the New Zealand Gully waterbodies in order to enable release native fish species in the future. These fresh water dams provide a unique opportunity for such projects, and with assistance from the State NRM Program, the BBG hopes to establish a successful and significant biodiversity hotspot right here in our local area.
The BBG would like to thank all the farmers and community members who have contributed their time and effort over the last five years in similar devolved grant programs across the Boyup Brook Shire, and hope we can continue to be successful in attracting funding to assist in protecting and improving our unique south-west landscape.
Robbers in Our Bush
Cootamundra Wattle (Acacia Baileyana)
Why is it a weed? 1. Native to NSW. 2. Fast growing. 3. High survival of seeds 4. Germinates prolifically after fire. 5. Excludes light from soil. 6. Forms a dense layer of leaf and pod remains. 7. Eliminates indigenous species. (This is true of all introduced wattles)
Plant: Small tree up to 10 metres. Leaves: Feathery or fern like and silvery grey. Flowers: Prolific golden yellow, ball shaped in clusters of stalked flowers branching off a single stem.
If you have this wattle in your garden please consider grubbing it out, OR prune heavily after flowering and before seeding. If it is growing on your roadside please eliminate it.
These seeds are viable for twenty years.
You will need to keep at it. Above: Cootamundra Wattle

Adventures Continue at Early Learning Centre
Something has been lurking in the darkness, nibbling on the plants at Boyup Brook Early Learning Centre. Our broad beans have been munched by snails and our snow peas sampled by rabbits! But not to fear, our gardening adventure will continue… keep an eye out for more changes to come including the disappearance of our beloved cubby.
We would like to thank Malcolm Armstrong, Jenna Jacobson, Kim Askew and Keri Tripp for all their hard work and efforts during our recent busy bee. Many hands make light work.
In other news, our entrance garden beds are looking fantastic thanks to the great efforts by Playgroup and the Shire. The new native plants are stunning and have been greatly complimented by children, parents and visitors alike.
Our pre-Kindy children have been busy visiting the District High School’s Early Start Program. Be sure to give us a beep and a wave hello if you see us walking in our orange vests.
Our healthy lunchbox and nutrition workshop was a huge success, and we owe a massive thank you to local personal trainer Tara Reid for hosting this.
For those who missed it, we will be looking into having a follow up hands on session in the near future. Feel free to contact the service if you are interested.

Student Guide Dog Writing Challenge As part of the CRC Guide Dog Challenge, students were encouraged to participate in a writing challenge themed around vision impairment and Guide Dogs.
The Year 5/6 class from Boyup Brook DHS took up the challenge and submitted some wonderful stories using the mandatory first line ‘My Guide Dog is my best friend’.
The competition judges were local published authors, Mr Graham Calley and Mrs Lesley Geers, with both thrilled to read the entries. Their judging criteria was based on the story being within the 500 word limit; relevance to the topic VisAbility WA / Guide Dogs WA, creativity and content as well as neatness, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
As no entries were received in the other age groups, it was decided to award a winner from Year 6 and Year 5. After collaborating their thoughts, Mr Calley and Mrs Geers selected the Writing Challenge winners to be Georgia Dalton (Year 6) and Brooke Nield (Year 5). The girls each received a certificate and an amazing prize pack with donations from Boyup Brook IGA, Boyup Brook Pharmacy, Boyup Brook Post Office and the CRC. Tayla Forbes was also awarded with a Highly Commended certificate. Below are their stories for you to enjoy.
Pugsy the Great
by Brooke Nield
My guide dog is my best friend and his name is Pugsy. Pugsy is my best friend because he helps me get around the town. I know what your thinking, I should be able to get around the town by myself but really, I can’t because I’m blind. I have been blind all my life and Pugsy has always been there for me.
One of the best times I’ve had with Pugsy was when we went to the beach and Pugsy had the end of a stick in his mouth and I held the other end of the stick in my hands and he led me along in the water.
Another great time was when I first got Pugsy and that night he followed me around everywhere to make sure I was safe and happy. Every night since then Pugsy has slept on my bed and made sure I was safe and happy.
In all my life I have never crashed into a car, been lost, hurt myself or forgot to put something away and that is because I’ve got Pugsy and he is my best friend.
My Guide Dog Rex
by Georgia Dalton
My guide dog is my best friend. In the early stages of my life I became completely blind, so not long after, my wonderful parents got me a guide dog. I named him Rex. He is a beautiful Labrador with golden, shiny fur. He acts as my eyes everywhere I take him. If I need to cross the road he will sit down telling me to go no further if there is a car coming. When it’s all clear he will stand up and walk onto the road, guiding me across.
Yesterday I was walking along the footpath to the shops, when I felt a nudge on my leg, that’s when I realized he was steering me into the shops. I knelt down and stroked the soft, golden fur on top of his head. He then nudged me to help me up on my feet and then guided me through the shop. At home that night I treated Rex with a treat for his hard work, but even though he was done for the day he still didn’t let me out of his sight.
The next morning I was about to get out of bed when I heard this loud bark. I knew that Rex was warning me of something, so I stopped. Then I heard this rustling noise near my bed, then I knew what he was doing. He was moving my slippers out of the way so I didn’t trip. I gave him a quick pat and then he guided me to the kitchen. After I had breakfast, I walked back into my room to get dressed. Little did I know though the mat near my door was folded up. I got my foot caught on it and stumbled, but then Rex came running in and jumped up with his paws on my shoulders, pushing me up straight. I hugged him and thought about what would have happened if he hadn’t have been there.
No other guide dog can ever replace Rex.

WA’s Soil Health Champions have been revealed in the push to highlight the importance of soil health in the state’s southern agricultural regions.
The announcement comes in the lead up to the Talkin’ Soil Health conference in Kojonup in September, and in recognition of the 2015 International Year of Soils.
The farmers were nominated and chosen for the work they were doing in promoting healthy, sustainable soils on their properties.
Manjimup avocado and cattle farmer Doug Pow has been selected as the South West Catchments Council’s Soil Health Champion.
Mr Pow has been trialling several different methods to improve his farm’s soil health, including placing biochar under avocado trees to see if it will improve growth and yields.
He has also introduced dung beetles on his farm to incorporate cow manure into the soil to improve soil fertility, reduce flies and to reduce parasite loads on the pasture.
In the Northern Agricultural Catchment Council’s region, Buntine farmer Stuart McAlpine has been focusing on encouraging soil biology by adding organic stimulants into his system.
Nine years ago he began extensive on-farm research and development leading to a more efficient farming system while cutting back on fertiliser.
State Soil Health Champions
Achieving improved resilience in his soils has improved nutrient use efficiency and enabled him to reduce risk in dry seasons.
With a similar focus on soil biology has been Wheatbelt NRM’s Soil Champion Rob Grylls. He’s been manufacturing his own liquid organic fertiliser on his Bencubbin farm, using amongst other things lupin chaff, straw and sheep manure.
Rob has spread the fertiliser using liquid injection at seeding and spraying post emergent, as well as applying compost from metropolitan waste centres. He is also trialling the incorporation of oil mallee mulch from on-farm plantings.
To hear more from these innovative farmers, and other leading industry experts, you can attend the Talkin’ Soil Health conference in Kojonup on the Thursday 10th and Friday 11th of September.
To register online go to www.talkinsoilhealth.com.au
The event has been funded through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme.

The Collie Vets will be attending again and they are also sponsoring the popular dog jump competition. Do you own a promising high flying dog? Time to really focus on the training.
The sausage making competition sounds lots of fun. It has been conducted at several South West shows and by the time it gets to us, all the minor hiccups should be ironed out and we should be able to have the biggest and best competition. After the sausages are made – and judged! – there will be a big cook-up and everyone will have the opportunity to sample all the different sausages.
The Society wish to thank Andrew and Anne Thompson from Venturon Beef for sponsoring the competition AND supplying all the beef; wonderful support and oh boy, those sausages are going to be so delicious.
This year your membership tickets will be different –there will not be a tear-off strip. In order to save time when making the tickets it has been decided to dispense with the tear-off strip and so if you need to leave the grounds but plan to return, you will have your hand stamped. This way, the gate keepers will know not to charge you twice. It has been the practice at
several of the other Shows and seem to be working well.
And for those people who try to get free drinks at the Bar, the tickets will also be different!
There will be a busy bee on Sunday 30th August – painting, rubbish removal and more seats at the Bar – are some of the things to be done. If you would like to join the merry crew please come at 9.00am.
The Rural Ambassador State Final was held at the Claremont Showgrounds on August 22. The Winner was Jess Warr from the Mid West region and the runner up was Denis Warnick from the Central Region. Waroona’s Kirstin Waller represented the South West Region admirably.
On a sad note, our Patron of many, many years, Sandy Lewis is not enjoying good health at the moment and he now resides in a local nursing home. His family have been in touch and will keep us informed of Sandy’s condition. If you would like to contact him, he and Trisha live in Victor Harbor, South Australia.

Volunteers Need Consideration
Nationals WA Member for the South West Colin Holt MLC has welcomed the findings of an Auditor General report on the Support and Preparedness of Fire and Emergency Services Volunteers in WA.
The report, published in August, assessed if the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) effectively recruits, prepares and supports fire and emergency services volunteers.
Mr Holt said the report demonstrated a need to pay critical attention to facts and figures relating to the State’s volunteer force as well as the wellbeing, training and support of more than 20,000 individuals volunteering across about 800 emergency services groups.
“Volunteer emergency services personnel are a hugely valuable asset to South West communities, stepping up to assist others during catastrophic events,” he said.
“These men and women often put their own lives on the line to ensure the safety of others and for that reason alone, the State needs to improve record keeping and information associated with this dedicated force.”
Mr Holt said it was particularly important DFES developed specific volunteer policies and procedures to ensure best practice management of issues like training, fatigue and communication.
He added that as the State’s lead emergency services agency, it was incumbent upon DFES to improve its relationship and data sharing with local government-managed volunteer groups.
“The report found DFES had made considerable progress in identifying how it recruits, prepares and supports its volunteers, but there are still many improvements to be made in the area of data collection and communication,” he said.
“Similarly, the report identified a trend of declining of volunteer group numbers, especially in regional areas, which is a great concern in the context of emergency response capacity.”
Mr Holt said a Nationals WA-devised policy to support emergency service groups through allocating them $2000 Emergency Services Volunteer Fuel Cards should be implemented as soon as possible.
“This commitment will be funded by Royalties for Regions, providing an incentive to volunteer by reducing fuel costs shouldered by emergency service volunteers as well as offering a small thankyou for the vital role they play in protecting our communities,” he said.
“Along with DFES implementing recommendations made by the Auditor General’s report, our community safety network could be significantly strengthened by this investment.”
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Garden Club Cuttings
For our August Garden Club we visited Simon and Kate's five acre property in Ridgeview, Boyup Brook. With the weather being kind, there were twenty members and visitors.
The long drive up to the house with large trees either side was majestic, on the right hand side, surrounded by native trees enmass giving the property privacy and seclusion.
Kate spoke passionately how the garden evolved and planned to build a house eight years ago previously a paddock. The first thing they did was put a dam in to capture the rainfall, then over the years, build the house and establish the garden.
The magnificent large Jarrah and Marri Trees around the back of the house were already there, wonderful habitat for the birdlife.
Closer to the house they have established more garden beds, an area for growing vegetables and a potting shed. A gravel path takes you down through a pergola planted with climbing roses (eventually covering it) with a circular limestone fire pit at the end, play areas for the children and more. On the northern side are fruit trees which are overlooking the dam.
We were lost for words to see what Simon and Kate have achieved in such a short space of time - it's a credit to them both. They have created a sanctuary for themselves and for the many species of birds coming into their garden. Thank you once again Simon and Kate for given us the opportunity to experience your part of 'Paradise' in Boyup Brook.
We settled into afternoon tea with homemade cake admiring the peaceful beautiful garden. The plant raffle was won by Leslie.
Garden Club next meeting is on Tuesday 8th September we will be visiting Pat and Gordon Ross's garden, Barron Court, Boyup Brook. Head out of Town turn left at Banks Road, turn left at T-junction Abel Street, then left at Barron Court. There's plenty of parking up towards the house.
Those who wish to carpool meet at the usual place outside the Shire Hall at 1.30pm. Please bring a chair/cup and plants to swap.

App for Learning Potential
Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson MP has welcomed the launch of an innovative new mobile app to encourage parents to get more involved in their children’s education.
“The Learning Potential app, which is available for free on Android and Apple devices, makes it easier for parents and carers to be part of their child’s learning, and will help get the most out of the time they spend with their child,” Mr Wilson said.
He added, “The app is packed full of helpful articles and videos offering tips and ideas for parents to become more involved in their child’s learning.”
Parents’ involvement is an important part of a good education and with the strong support of school teachers and families; children can do better through their school life.
The Learning Potential website also contains all of the content from the app to make sure that content is available to people who do not own a smart device, with all content available in an accessible format.
The Learning Potential mobile app was launched recently by the Minister for Education and Training the Hon Christopher Pyne MP who said “This app offers inspiring ways for parents and carers to become more involved in their child’s learning, from the high chair through to high school.”

Poems by Chick
“For Ethel”
We pay a tribute to our friend Ethel,
Who was full of life’s priority.
Always in command, whatever the demand,
And submitted to every authority.
She loved to sing, her praises to ring,
And share of her Christian view.
Ethel gave of her own and to family now grown,
And to friends and acquaintances, too.
So dear Ethel, farewell, we will ever tell,
Of your faith and your courage inspired.
May God, ever bless, as we confess,
You were a friend to be desired.
So rest now in peace, may your joys never cease.
We confess we will miss you so.
Hasten away in heaven to stay,
You have our salute as you go!
Farewell, dear friend.

On Saturday the 24 August 2013 my family and I had the great pleasure of going to Pemberton to catch up with Fr John Rea.
During the afternoon session I went up in the line for a blessing, I asked Fr Rea to pray over me for the young girl outside who wouldn’t come in for a blessing. After Fr Rea prayed for her he added, “and Lord something marvellous for our dear sister Anne”
I must admit my first thought was “Yes, Thank you Jesus, I’m going to win lotto, then immediately felt bad for such a mercenary thought, then I got excited as I knew that my daughter’s unborn son, who was meant to be born with Downs Syndrome would be born healthy. Throughout the rest of the day I told everyone who would listen that Lee-Anne would have her baby on the Sunday.
Sunday the 25th I got up early around 5am, to get sheep in before we went to Mass. I got the sheep rounded up and had them at the gate on to the road as it was starting to get light. The sheep ran through the gate perfectly, a bit unusual and out on to the road, but instead of turning to the left like normal and heading for home, they bolted to the right heading for the T road. As I took off through the paddock to cut them off I called out “Jesus, you will have to stop them”. The sheep came to a dead stop about 5mts from the T road and just stayed there. I could not believe my eyes.
I slowed the bike down and as I looked up to the east along the bottom of the horizon the sky had what looked like a thick line of the most amazing pink colour, a colour that can’t be described as
Marist Healing Priest Visits Pemberton it was so delicate, yet strong and a shade I haven’t seen. As I was looking at the pink, my eyes were drawn to the bush on the edge of the road. The trees and shrubs where alive, pulsating with the joy of the Creator. So many different shades of green, olive, greyish, yellow. Even the dead sticks were alive. Everything kept changing, glistening and glowing and just the sheer joy of the plants as they adored the creator, which they did perfectly.
I understood why we need an eternity in Heaven as it was impossible to look away from such joy filled wonder and awe. Even though the trees and sticks are alive with the wonder of God we are still able to use them, we just have to have respect for the great gift that God has given us in nature. I don’t know how long I saw this for, but when it returned to how we normally see things the sky was still quite grey, no sunrise and the sheep where still standing at the T road.
I rode the bike down to the corner and the sheep turned around and walked home. I also understood the goodness and mercy of God in not allowing us to see this normally as we would not get anything done. We would never be able to tear our eyes away from this sight as it is constantly changing, and just the sheer joy of nature in adoring our God Almighty is enthralling. I know I haven’t done justice to what I saw as I don’t have the words to describe the vision, it’s too profound.

Research shows the results of the ‘dad deficit’. Too many children today are growing up without a father’s input. And as a result they end up making poor life, relationship and marriage choices.
So how does a dad equip his kids for life in the real world? (1) Know what they’re up to. Get to know what makes them tick. Ask what subjects
they enjoy in school, and which ones they’re struggling with. Learn who their friends are; who they spend time with at break and after school. Try to listen and learn. Take them out occasionally for breakfast or a ham-burger; they’ll feel like royalty spending one–to–one time with Dad!
(2) Teach them to stand tall. A tragedy of their young world is the increasing suicide
rate because of playground bullying. Teach your children to stand up for themselves. Teach them respect, and how to protect themselves by speaking up appropriately in class when they’re unclear about the lesson, or to courageously say what they believe. Teach them assertiveness in confronting unfair treatment. Kids who become ‘punch bags’ are set up to be victimised!
(3) Alert them to the dangers of having a sense of entitlement.
Yes, they need parents who express unconditional love for them. But some of us think our kids can do no wrong—even when they do! Consequently they grow up having unrealistic expectations and a distorted view of how life works. Everybody gets a scorecard in life, and it records both our wins and our losses. Let your kids know that we all make mistakes. Failing to recognise that just makes them self–deceived and sets them up for heartache. Children learn from failure how to deal with disappointment; it prepares them for later life when things don’t go their way.
(4) Be their example. However accomplished your ‘preaching’ skills may be, you need to be ‘walking the walk’ in front of your children- you are their role model. You can tell them it’s important to be healthy and active, but if you’re a couch potato inhaling bags of chips and watching endless footy matches, they’re not convinced. Set an example by getting fit, pursuing a healthy lifestyle, activities and interests, and watch them think how ‘cool’ it is to be like Dad.

Boyup Brook Cricket Club
With the Boyup Cricket Club joining the Warren-Blackwood competition this season, it looks to be an exciting year of cricket ahead. Last season saw the end of the Donnybrook-Blackwood Association, and it was a promising finish to the season with the boys winning 3 of their last 4 games.
With experienced players in Tristan Mead, Scott Tweedie, Ty Bancroft, Leigh Clark, Peter Harvey, Ben Mead and Nigel Brittain pulling on the whites again, coupled with the up-and-coming stars in Jacob Maw, Corey Bennett, Luke Reilly, Joseph Thompson, Ben Thompson, Tom Keightley and Patrick Reilly, the 2015/16 season looks to be a promising one for the boys in green.
To start the season we will be holding our AGM at the Boyup Club on Thursday, September 3rd at 7:30pm. It would be great to get as many people there to give their input on the season ahead.

Juniors Well done to all our fantastic Minkey and Mini players who had their last session on August 20.
The Minis had lots of fun dressed up as their favourite characters and the Minkey girls showed how much their skills had improved this year when they played a match with the Under 10 Junior players. It was great to see such determination and courage shown against older kids - and there may be a few handy goal sneaks stepping up to the Junior ranks next year!
The Junior Hockey season is winding up and at the end of August, the teams were evenly matched with both Sharks and Hornets having the same number of wins for the year. The players have shown remarkable development during the season with their skills and sportsmanship improving each game.
The Semi Final on September 5 will be a great pre-cursor to the Grand Final which will be played on Saturday 12th September at 9.15am.
The Final will be followed by presentations and the wind-up.
All Minkey and Mini players, as well as family and friends, are invited to come along to the final to cheer on the Juniors. Presentations will be made to all groups.
This will be a celebration of a fantastic year for all Mini, Minkey and Junior players.
Women After taking out the 2014 A2 Women’s Premiership, the Boyup Brook Women’s Hockey team have finished the season at the other end of the table in 2015. The team was competitive all year, however was not able to convert on the scoreboard.
Bandits’ Captain Jodi Nield said “This was probably more of a regular season for us. Last year was amazing but it’s really difficult to compare when our team changes so significantly from year to year.”
“The results didn’t go our way this season, but we’ve played some great hockey, had fun and we’ll turn around and do it all again next year!” she reassured.

Golf Day to Support Foodbank
Nationals WA Member for the South West, Colin Holt MLC, is sponsoring a club day at Boyup Brook Golf Club on September 5 2015 that will support locally based charity Foodbank WA.
All competitors are asked to bring a can of non-perishable food to place in the specially marked Foodbank boxes at the club.
Foodbank WA supplies over 420 charities and 430 schools with the provisions they need to fight hunger in the community. More than 51,300 people are helped on average every month, including 16,000 children.
“Your donation of canned food could make the difference between someone in your community having a meal or going hungry,” Mr Holt said.

Thank you to Roos’ Coaches Fran Staniforth-Smith and Steve O’Connell. You guys did a great job and should be very proud of your efforts, especially being first time coaches. It is a very hard and challenging job which has its ups and downs but rewarding none the same. Thank you and congratulations.
Congratulations to Deanna for her efforts in both Penquins and Falcons. Deanna has undergone a lot of training this year in Perth with “The Good the Bad & the Ugly” programme, run by well-known and accomplished coaches of WA and National Netball. Deanna is very passionate about netball and gets very excited when things get nitty gritty. Good luck in the Finals.

ELDERS “Live It”
The Wool Market in August has seen values rise 26% compared same time last year with 21.0 micron fleece wool trading above 1400 clean cents with 18.0 micron wools achieving 1500 clean cents and above. Very strong demand for high tensile strength fleece wool (NKT), also skirtings are trading in the 1200 clean cents. Oddments are still at a 28 year high and look at maintaining current levels. The first 3 weeks of the selling season, prior to the recess provided slightly higher volumes compared to the previous year, but since the resumption of sales volumes have dropped away against some expectations and buyers have less wool to work with. Supply and Demand in its purest form means that the market will rise, however quite a lot of new season shearing is underway. The devaluation of the Chinese currency heavily impacted the Aussie dollar, with weakness passed onto our currency. Ultimately a weaker AUD bodes well for the market as it increases competiveness going forward. Weekly sales continue in September. Regards Tim Burgess—District Wool Manager
