My Inbox….

Welcome to 2016! I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable Christmas and New Year period.

Apologies for the Gazette being out a little later than usual, but we at the CRC also had a holiday!

‘Buy Up in Boyup’ is an initiative of the Tourism Association encouraging the shop local message. For our community’s future, please make local businesses your first option.

Apart from the Australia Day celebrations, January is traditionally a quiet month in Boyup as many have holidays and community groups take a break, but as we look toward February, the calendar is already filling up.

The Music Park is this year’s venue for the Shire’s Australia Day breakfast and awards and well done to the cricket club for initiating a family fun cricket day. Whatever you do to celebrate, enjoy and stay safe - #AustraliaDay

Until next month

Cheers, Jodi

THANK YOU

We would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and well wishes. We would also like to thank those people who looked after our house, garden and animals. Wishing you all a prosperous 2016.

Gordon and Irene Doust

Craig, Carol, Danica and Lonnie McMeikan would like to thank everyone for their kind words and support over the last few weeks. It makes us really grateful to be in such an awesome community like Boyup Brook.

Kind regards, Craig McMeikan

Sincere thanks to the kind person who left two salad bowls and a wooden board in the porch at the Baptist Church. I have searched widely for these for several months without success and asked everyone I could think of for them. I am thrilled to have their return. The plastic bowls are of no consequence but the board has enormous sentimental value as it was made by a dear friend.

Kind regards, Liz Parker

New OIC in Town Firstly I would like to introduce myself as the new Officer in Charge at Boyup Brook Police Station. My name is Jodie SHUTTLEWORTH and I have 14 years of Policing experience in both Regional and Country locations. I recently transferred from Narrogin Police Station where I was a shift Sergeant with 17 staff. I have also worked in Carnarvon, Burringurrah, Mundijong, Busselton, Kensington, Claremont, Cottesloe, Kwinana and Rottnest Police Stations.

I am really looking forward to joining the team here at Boyup Brook Police and the Boyup Brook community. I hope to get out and about to meet you all in the near future.

Traffic Issues Once again we are coming into the Christmas and New Year period and Boyup Brook Police wish to remind all road users to take care over the festive season. Make sure you get plenty of rest, allow yourselves plenty of time to get to your destination and please if you are going enjoy a nice drink or two make sure you have a nominated driver who won’t drink. Boyup Brook Police want to see everyone enjoying their festive season and all coming home safely to their families.

BOYUP BROOK POLICE

Recently, Boyup Brook Police attended a serious crash on the Boyup Brook – Cranbrook Road which resulted in the serious injury of the driver. Police believe fatigue may have been a contributing factor.

Double demerit points commenced at midnight Friday the 18th of December 2015 and continue through until Sunday 3rd of January 2016. Boyup Brook Police will be out and about targeting drink drivers so remember to know your limit or be safe and make arrangements to have someone drive you or collect you to ensure you not only get home safe but you keep your license.

Burglary Offences Boyup Brook has had one recent burglary where an Argon gas bottle was stolen so once again it’s a timely reminder to ensure all your property is secured correctly.

Drug Offences Officers from Boyup Brook in company with other officers from nearby outstations have been acting on information received and have conducted several drug warrants within our sub-district. Three offenders have appeared in Bridgetown Magistrates Court where they were convicted of all their offences.

Blue Light Senior Constable GAUGG would like to let everyone know he is planning the next Blue Light disco for sometime in January 2016 before everyone returns back to school. For further information or to volunteer assistance please S/C GAUGG on 9762 1666

Busy End of Year for St Mary’s

Page 10: Boyup Brook History Not Lost

The Boyup Gazette January 2016 pg 10

The fifth annual “Storm in a Teacup” – Women’s Field Day will be hosted on Saturday, 19 March 2016. Rylington Park and the Boyup Brook Co-Op invite all women to join in the day in the shearing shed on the farm.

The main speaker for the day will be chef Don Hancey. Don Hancey was born and raised in Bunbury, then trained in hospitality and cooking in Perth.

He opened his first restaurant “The Colonial” in Augusta at the tender age of 23, winning a “Gold Plate Award” for best regional restaurant.

He was then appointed Development Director of Leeuwin Estate Winery, opening up Leeuwin’s first restaurant. Don and his team won another Gold Plate Award at Leeuwin. Don then took over a run down beach shop at Yallingup turning it into a licensed restaurant “Surfside”.

For the past twenty years Don has owned and operated Panorama Catering in Perth hosting many successful events and food festivals in WA’s local and regional areas where they bring skills, knowledge and passion to these existing community events.

His focus now is supporting and promoting WA produce.

As the “WA Food Ambassador”, Don now consults to some of Western Australia’s iconic food companies, assisting them with product development, placement, marketing and generally

being the link / “storyteller” between WA food producers, chefs and the general public. Don Hancey has become WA’s Food Ambassador through his continual support and dedication to WA food producers.

On the day Don will host two cooking demonstrations. He will need a few ladies to taste test the food – you might be the lucky one.

Tickets are $50 and will be available from the third week in February. This includes morning tea, lunch (with a glass of local wine), a variety of market stalls to walk through and all the entertainment.

Other speakers include Bridgetown author/story writer Sarah Evans, Jennifer Egerton-Warburton from Lucinda’s Everlastings in Kojonup and Janelle South (Darkan) from Women in Farming Enterprises.

Again we will auction off our donated logo painting by Jacquie Broockmann and a few other items. Money raised will go towards the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA. You are welcome to book your ticket in advance by calling Erlanda on 9765 3012 or 0429 375 609 or via email [email protected]

Rylington Park is looking forward to hosting another great Storm in a Teacup day. Come and enjoy the day.

Over the years we have assisted many hundreds of landholders rehabilitating their land, constructing endless kilometres of fencing, planting hundreds of thousands seedlings, rejuvenating wetlands, providing habitat for endangered species and much more.

In 2001, the BBG won the prestigious International RiverPrize, still the only Landcare group in Australia to do so and there have been many accolades over the years. Honours and awards are tangible recognition of our accomplishments, in particular this years’ achievement at the Winner of the 2015 State Landcare Awards of the Fairfax Media Landcare Community Group Award.

When I worked in the Forests Department in the 1970’s our Conservator Bruce Beggs used to say; ‘Forestry is more about people than it is trees’. Likewise people and communities are what Landcare is all about.

No matter how many brilliant ideas we may come up with for improvements to the land and the environment, they will all come to nought if the community is not behind them.

As much as Landcare is about the land and the environment, it is about people, after all if we were not here there would be no landcare problems, no need for landcare, nature would look after itself.

The Community Landcare Group Award, to me, is therefore a most significant award, as it is recognition of the outstanding ability of BBG’s staff to engage and work successfully as a community group, to engage with landholders and the public.

Twenty five or more years ago few people, even in rural areas, were aware of the environmental degradation that was stealthily sneaking up on us.

This awakening of awareness has perhaps been the single most important achievement in Landcare. That is why people will always be the most important factor in landcare and why I can feel justly proud of our dedicated team at the BBG - they put people first.

Wishing all our valued volunteers, partners, colleagues and community members a very happy and prosperous 2016 New Year.

Fox Shoot 2016

The annual fox shoot this year will be the first weekend in February (Friday 5 to Sunday 7).

Stockbrands have withdrawn their sponsorship which paid $5 towards the Royal Flying Doctor’s Service for every fox and cat shot in the state. We have decided to charge each team a $20 entry fee and donate this money towards the RFDS. This way we can keep building on the relationship between Red Card for Rabbits and Foxes and the RFDS.

Team registrations can be made from 25 January at the Boyup Brook Co-Op or Greenline or by phoning Erlanda on 9765 3012 or 0429 375 609. Please contact us if you are willing to take out shooters on your property for either or both of the evenings.

We will again have a number of keen hunters (with liability insurance) coming to Boyup Brook to help us get rid of the critters. Thank you to the farmers who have been taking people out in the past. This is a perfect opportunity to get more city folk involved in country activities and building a bridge of understanding between us.

Thank you all for supporting this event every year – it’s really heart warming to see so many locals coming to the counting and weighing in on the Sunday morning at the Pistol Club. Thank you also to the Pistol Club for putting up breakfast for us every year. Please enter a team and join us to shoot as many critters possible – it would be great to beat our tally from last year.

Bringing Back the Brook

Natural Resource Management was given a significant boost in December, with the State Government announcing funding for more than 140 community projects across WA, including the Blackwood Basin Group’s ‘Bringing back the Boyup Brook’ initiative. For a full list of projects visit http://nrm.wa.gov.au.

A total of $3.99 million will be distributed through the State Natural Resource Management Community Action grants program, including $3.19 million from Royalties for Regions.

Member for Warren-Blackwood, Terry Redman, said the grants of between $5,000 and $55,000 would be distributed for 142 community projects, helping to protect the State’s natural resources.

“These projects conserve and restore unique eco-systems throughout WA. Without these grants, much important environmental work would not be able to occur,” Mr Redman said.

The State Natural Resource Management Community Action grants are part of a $24 million commitment over three years towards natural resource management in WA.

“The grants support local-decision making, enabling communities to do on-ground works that are vital to their local area and encourage their continued involvement in the initiative,” Mr Redman said.

Community Capability Grants for small natural resource management projects close on May 30, 2016.

Kids Create Christmas Fun

The Christmas spirit was in full swing as a number of local children spent a fun morning at the Community Resource Centre on December 22.

With a table full of craft materials, their creativity took hold with some impressive Christmas tree decorations and cards made out of bottle tops, popsticks, pipe cleaners and paper.

Icing Christmas shaped biscuits was also popular and there were plenty of laughs as they played ‘Pin the Nose on Rudolph’.

The CRC is looking to expand its activities for the youth of Boyup Brook in 2016. For more information, call 9765 1169.

“THIS AUSTRALIA!”

God bless Australia, land of the true

With ranges wide and horizons blue.

Land of the emu and kangaroo.

With ‘Diggers” in khaki and sailors in blue,

And airmen valiant in all that they do,

Protecting this country for me and for you.

Migrants come, hoping to leave pain and strife,

Seeking a place in Australian life.

Those who were born in this land of the free,

Thank the good Lord for their liberty.

So give unto others as you have received,

Of all nature’s wonders that you have perceived.

God bless Australia, what eér be your fate,

Long live Australia, Good On yer Mate!!

Mental Health Reforms

Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson MP has welcomed sweeping changes planned for mental health services, which will change the face of mental health delivery across the country.

Mr Wilson said the Mental Health Reform Package sets out bold reforms to be phased in over the next three years, with the Country WA Primary Health Network (PHN) at the forefront of planning and commissioning better care.

The key reform will see people with severe and complex mental illness benefiting from new funding approaches to co-ordinating and delivering services, providing choice and control for people with mental illness.

“The Country WA PHN will be in charge of commissioning the mental health services they consider necessary and appropriate in the area to meet our specific local needs,” Mr Wilson said.

“This is all about recognising that with mental health or illness, not everyone is the same and may need varying levels of care or treatment depending on how their condition is assessed.

Included in the reforms is a new approach to suicide prevention, a single telephone and digital gateway to find the mental health advice or service needed along with specific care reforms focussed on children and indigenous Australians.

“I have already started introducing the PHN regional managers to health service providers and constituents at forums I’ve recently held,” Mr Wilson said.

“I look forward to continuing to work with them directly to make a real difference at the grassroots level.”

Each year, up to 4 million Australians suffer some form of mental health issue, making it the third most significant chronic condition in the country, after cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Full details of the Turnbull Government’s Mental Health Reform Package is at www.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/mental-review-response

An Evening With John Callaghan

January 30th at Community Hall 7:30pm

$10 Entry Fee Children and Students Free

Meet John Coffee and Bickies after show

Contact John Hopkins 0407 195 631

John Callaghan grew up in the rugged WA mining town of Kalgoorlie/Boulder, where he got his love of the land and its

people. He is a singer/songwriter who is a very proud and parochial Aussie. John describes himself as a singing

storyteller, who likes to draw the listener into the visualization of the songs he sings.

John says he has been singing for as long as he can remember. He was the lead singer/songwriter in a moderately

successful Queensland country-dance band years ago, called 'Stratus'. After becoming a Christian in the early 80's he

decided on a family and a solo career, singing and sharing his testimony, leading others to Jesus. His Christian album

"Beginnings" is his most successful album.

Always wanting to take the next step, John decided in 2012 that it was time to get all his 'ducks' in a row and forge ahead

with a new album, so he gathered up his songs and headed for the recording studio to record his long dreamed of album,

which he called, "This Day Would Come".

He has written many songs over the years, and has recorded several albums, with moderate success. Most notably,

"Waltzing Matera" & "Stand Up" which has become his signature song. He was commissioned by Western

Mining to write a song about the WA School of Mines in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, and performed it at their charity ball.

John has toured England, Ireland, South East Asia, NZ and many parts of this great land of Australia. John has played

with, and been support to such famous acts as Johnny Cash, Don Williams, Barry McGuire, James Blundell and Jack

Clement, and appeared regularly on many television shows, including the "Reg Lindsay's Country Homestead" early in

his career.

When not performing at festivals and clubs, John spends much of his "spare" time singing and sharing his life story in

churches, prisons, schools, old peoples homes and hospitals, where his special brand of music and charisma lifts those

who hear him play and inspires achievement. John's favourite saying is “Music is the Elixir of the soul. It enables people

to forget for a while about their daily lives and be transported, through song, to another place and time.”

As a retired Australian Karate Champion, he is often called upon to talk to young people about reaching out and being the

best that they can be, regardless of their background or current circumstances.

John has won many awards over the years for his vocal, songwriting and entertaining ability, however

has always had a heart to see others find Christ through his story's and his music.

If you think you may like John to share his testimony and songs, please give him a call -

Regional emergency services organisations are being reminded that they can now apply for a Royalties for Regions funded Fuel Card, valued at $2,000 to support local volunteers.

Member for Warren-Blackwood, Terry Redman said applications for the Regional Emergency Services Volunteer Fuel Card (RESVFC) are currently open, and encourages all eligible volunteer brigades, groups and units (BGU’s) in the Warren-Blackwood region to submit their application.

The Fuel Card scheme was a Nationals WA election commitment, and is supported by $7.37 million in Royalties for Regions funding. It will provide assistance to manage fuel and transport costs of eligible units which include Bush Fire Brigades, St John Ambulance, Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services, State Emergency Services, Volunteer Fire Services, Volunteer Emergency Services and Volunteer Marine Rescue Services.

Applications are currently open and need to be submitted by Sunday 10 January; with the first fuel cards being distributed in February 2016.

Volunteers are the backbone of our communities and our emergency service volunteers are the ones we turn to in times of great need. This card, which is modelled on the highly successful pensioner fuel card, will be an efficient way to help out with their costs.

The Royalties for Regions Volunteer Fuel Card is there to support these services as a practical means to assist with transport expenses in responding to emergency situations and Mr Redman would like to ensure that the Warren-Blackwood Emergency Services are aware that they are eligible for this funding.

Organisations can apply at www.dfes.gov.au/fuelcards

God says, ‘I know the plans I have for you ... plans to prosper you ... plans to give you hope and a future ... pray to Me, and I will listen to you.’ (Jeremiah 29:11-12).

This year ask God for His plan. It’s miserable playing a part for which you’re ill-suited. It’s like walking in shoes that don’t fit.

So ... what are you good at? What do you enjoy doing most? What accomplishments make you feel best?

List five moments in your life when you were acutely aware of this feeling of fulfilment. Does this reveal anything about your purpose? If money wasn’t a consideration, how would you fill your days? How does this compare with where you are now?

What one small step can you take right now – one phone call made, one letter written, one email sent – to move you towards your true calling?

What have you learned about your purpose through failure? Are some areas clearly not a part of your calling at all? Who do you admire for the way they’ve applied their talents? Why are you like them? What can you learn from them? How would you describe your vision for your life this year? Or five years from now? Or ten? Who are people in your life who really get who you are? Have you asked them what they think your purpose might be? Have they given any indication of how they think you should use your talents?

If you could write your own obituary, what would you want it to say? What would you like to be remembered for?

As you begin the New Year, ask God for His plan.

A strong contingent of members participated in the first Championship event for the season on December 19. The Handicap Mixed Doubles, sponsored by Boyup Brook Tyre Service, saw a field of ten pairs enter, making the competition a two pool split. The competition was tough all day, with most matches going to a tie-break with the self-handicapping system. The top of each pool played off in the final with Jen Staniforth-Smith and Graham Bergin defeating Sharon Nield and Rance Dorrington in a tiebreak.

The competition was followed by the annual Tennis Club Christmas Party sponsored by Boyup Brook IGA. A special guest arrived with treats for the youngsters, and those young at heart.

Mike and Michelle Lloyd are off to the Hopman Cup in January as the lucky winners of tickets donated by Tennis Australia.

Social tennis will continue throughout January with the next event being the Handicap Singles in a Fast Four format on February 6.

Junior tennis returns on Thursday, February 11 for Term 1. The juniors were treated to a fabulous six weeks of professional coaching in Term 4 2015 with Andrew Woodward, South West Zone coach. The skill level of all juniors has seen marked improvement under Andrew’s instruction and their enthusiasm even greater.

The annual Open Tournament is also fast approaching, this year to be played on March 5-6. Entry forms will be available soon.

The Boyup Brook Working Horse Club held its first Christmas Windup over the weekend of the 5th and 6th of December at our club grounds - Harvey Dickson’s Rodeo Arena. The weekend was structured with Junior/Juvenile Riders on Saturday the 5th and over 18’s on Sunday.

The Christmas Gymkhana consisted of a number of different races and events for the Juniors including a bending race, straight barrels, musical tins, egg and spoon, sack race, barrel race and apple bobbing. The kids and runners had a great afternoon. The spectators all had sore throats that night from cheering and laughing. It was a fantastic day for the young riders, with many having a huge boost in confidence and lots of fun at the same time.

Winner of the Free Rangers was Shay McGuiness. Winner of the Lead Liners was Kayley Johnson.

The kids were delighted to hear the sirens coming into the Rodeo Arena that afternoon with the big man himself - Father Christmas! A huge thank you to Boyup Brook IGA for the donation of all our supplies for the wonderful presents from Santa - thank you to the Boyup Brook VFF for bringing him along to our windup.

We relocated down to the Music Shed that evening for a BBQ Dinner - thanks to the Laverty Family for the donation of meat and all our members for bringing along so much wonderful food, and Harvey and Rose for once again opening up the Kitchen and Music Shed for us.

The dinner was a very special occasion with the first presentation of The Ken Brand Memorial Trophy. Ken passed away a few months ago and was a very special friend and supporter of our club. The Memorial Trophy is for someone who represents the club in a positive light, who helps, encourages, and has over all great sportsmanship within the club. The Winner of the trophy was Lee Holland. Congratulations to Lee who is a very deserving winner.

Adults started riding at 9am Sunday. The Adult Gymkhana consisted of western bending, flag race, straight barrels, time trials, musical cans, sack race, apple bobbing and a jackpot barrels (where the winner takes all). The spectators had just as much fun as the riders. There were some very close races, a dead heat and we discovered some very competitive club

Boyup Brook Working Horse Club

members. Ribbons got thrown left, right and centre, heaps of fun for horses and riders.

A big thank you must be relayed to Graham Ward, Lauren Willow and Marie-Claire Ryder for all the effort and time they put into facilitating the day - setting up, timekeeping, recording, scoring and presenting ribbons. The days ran incredibly smoothly and it’s a credit to the club.

Winner of the Open section was Sara Weir. Winner of the Cast for Age was Lee Holland Judged Award winner was Nicole Mason Winner of the Jackpot Barrel Race was Jim Laverty with 20.42secs

The Boyup Brook Working Horse Club started midway through 2015 and has grown into a wonderful, supportive, friendly club that has a diverse range of riders in age, ability and disciplines. We thank everyone who makes up our club and the members and committee would specifically like to mention: The Inglis Family for some very classy cattle for us to use

throughout the year. The Dickson Family for an absolutely amazing, safe, clean &

beautiful venue. Boyup Brook IGA for donations and raffle spots. Fran and her kitchen crew for doing such an awesome job

feeding the mobs and keeping the kitchen going and clean To all those who have donated cakes, biscuits and

equipment this year. Our spectators for cheering and helping through out the

year.

Congratulations to all who came and had a go. For those who couldn't make it, please know you were missed.

The next club day is going to be a casual camp out on the 2nd and 3rd of January.

Our first official club day will be the February 7th 2016 - Cattle Day.

On The Green

Mixed Variety Pairs Held on Sunday 22 November with three rounds being played in different formats for a change of pace and to hopefully improve our pairs game.

Mixed Fours Carnival On Sunday 6 December a mixed fours carnival was held with a full field of players and several teams coming from areas around Boyup Brook. The event is sponsored each year by Archer and Sons Funeral Homes, MacNeils, Primaries and Phoenix Fuels.

Three rounds were played during the day with the first game of 14 ends being held before lunch. Lunch was available at the Boyup Brook Club Inc and enjoyed by the players. Our thanks go to Blue, Gina and Tanya for looking after us on the day.

Two more games were held in the afternoon followed by a lovely afternoon tea provided by members and organised by our Convenor Susanne Connor.

During the day the winning team on each rink, for each round, received a cash prize, which was a popular bonus.

Following afternoon tea presentations were made to the winners. First was the Schinzig team from Moodiarrup, followed by a Manjimup team then a Balingup team which included Ginny Mitchell.

Ladies Pennants The ladies team is going well, taking full points against Donnybrook on Tuesday 15. This puts us in second place on the League ladder behind Manjimup Green. We now take a break over Christmas with our first game for next year being held on Tuesday 5 January.

The men have not had a lot of success this season though having many close games. It has been difficult at times with players not being available on several occasions due to other commitments.

They played at Manjimup on 19 December and then have a break until 16 January with a home game.

Christmas Windup Our Christmas party was held on Sunday 20 December with social bowls in the afternoon and followed by a festive afternoon tea and drinks at the Boyup Brook Club.

Year 2016 The ladies start with their 2 Bowls Single event on Thursday 7 January and the men have their Men’s Fours in late January.

Boyup Cricket Working Hard

Boyup Seniors have had a win, a loss and a bye in the last few weeks. Having played the last few games at home they are still fighting to move up the ladder as finals approach.

We hosted Dingup on November 21, which unfortunately we lost.

With a rest, the following week saw the team come back and beat Forestry. Duncan Kostera making a smashing 67 to lead the team to be all out for 168, left the bowlers to make sure that Forestry couldn’t reach our score. Ty Bancroft the best bowler on the day with 5/16 of 4 overs.

Boyup took on Northcliffe again at home and unfortunately couldn’t chase down their score of 179.

We have a few more home comes coming up starting on January 6 when we take on Bridgetown, followed by Manjimup on January 30. Let’s hope we can walk away with a win from both games.

Boyup Juniors have been playing great, seeing the young kids improve with every game they play. They are now on a well earned break, until school goes back and their first game will be on February 6 at home. The last home game for our juniors, so come down and watch our up and coming superstars play.

Some of our junior players are heading to Bunbury to play in the development squad and wish them all the best.

Hockeyroos to Play in Bunbury

Australia’s Women’s Hockey team, the Hockeyroos, will face England in two International Test Matches at the Bunbury Hockey Stadium on February 12 and 14, 2016.

The Federation-sanctioned tests are preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympics and are helped made possible by Department of Sport and Recreation funding through the Country Sport Enrichment Scheme.

The funding is also going towards community events around the match including open training sessions, Hockeyroos clinics for schools, junior and South West Academy of Sport athletes, coach-the-coach sessions and an umpires and officials workshop.
