He has been a keen sportsperson and always taking on administration positions in the clubs he belonged to. He played badminton at Chowerup and represented Boyup Brook at the South West Games in Bunbury. Ralph also played hockey. He finished the afternoon by completing the paper work and having a well earned cold beer in the clubrooms! Harris Thompson excels in all he attempts and especially in his chosen career path of breeding and judging cattle and animal husbandry. Harris won the Rylington Park Scholarship in 2011 to attend Cunderdin Agricultural College. During this time, he became a Youth representative for the Murray Grey Society, representing WA at the Royal Easter Show in Sydney in 2015, in New Zealand in 2016 where he won the NZ National Junior Judging Championship and the Senior Champion herdsman at Canterbury A & P Show. Last year at the Perth Royal Show, he won the most successful exhibitor of Murray Grey Cattle and went on to show at the Adelaide Royal Show. Harris is an active participant of the Wagin Woolarama, has qualified for the Junior State Merino judging and is a keen poultry breeder. In 2016, he accepted the position as Vice President of the Upper Blackwood Agricultural Society. Harris is kept busy on the family farm as well as in the local family’s IGA business preparing in the early mornings for the day’s business. With his cheerful and positive personality and willing and polite ways, Harris also takes time to help at functions such as the annual Seniors luncheon.

As February arrives, a sense of normality returns with the kids going back to school for a new year and many community groups and activities resuming after the summer break. Just take a look at the calendar to see how much is going on!

February also marks Country Music Festival time. A time that the entire community comes together to put on a huge range of activities, fundraise and showcase our town. Hats off to the Country Music Club Committee and volunteers for their efforts. We extend a big welcome to all of the visitors that this event brings to our community and hope you enjoy the Festival and your stay.

Congratulations to our three Australia Day award winners. Their selfless contributions to the community over many years are certainly acknowledged and appreciated. Well done. It is wonderful to hear that there were so many nominees, a true reflection of the commitment to Boyup Brook and of community spirit.

Enjoy February and the Festival, see you next month.

Cheers Jodi

Storm in a Teacup - Homegrown, Made with Love

Come and join us for the sixth annual women’s field day hosted by Rylington Park and the Boyup Brook Co-Op on Friday, 17 March, at Rylington Park in the shearing shed.

The day will kick off at 9:30am with morning tea, while you can walk through various market stalls. Our main speaker this year is the well-known gardening guru and radio presenter Sabrina Hahn. Sabrina will have two time slots during the day, of which the second one will be an hour of questions and answers - bring along your gardening questions for Sab to answer.

We will also listen to Tracey Lansdell guiding us through how to get the bees back into our gardens. Tracey will also talk about herbs and the medicinal value of plants.

This year we have professional auctioneer and mental health advocate, Tiny Holly, conducting the auction for us. The auction is an exciting part of the day, where Tiny will be auctioning off our logo painting, kindly donated by local artist, Jacquie Broockmann.

Lunch will be prepared by Heidi Webb and Kate Cumming and will be served with a glass of local wine from Beulah Wines. Tickets cost $50 each and include morning tea, lunch (and wine), stalls, speakers and a lovely goodie bag. Buy your tickets at the Boyup Brook Co-Op, the Boyup Brook CRC, the Treehouse Café or by phoning Erlanda on 9765 3012 or 0429 375 609.

Stall enquiries are also welcome. See you in the shed.

The Australian Lions Recycle for Sight program collects over 300,000 pairs of used spectacles and over 50,000 pairs of used sunglasses each year.

After processing the collected glasses, they are distributed to men, women and children in the poorest parts of the developing world at no cost to the recipient.

The processing system includes:

Initial sort: The glasses are sorted into those that are suitable for reuse, those with progressive lens, and those that fail the initial quality assurance test. The glasses that cannot be used have their lens popped and the frames retained.

Cleaning: The glasses are then washed in ultrasound industrial cleaning machines.

Grading: A lensometer is used to read the power and prescription of single lens, bifocal lens and multi focused lenses. This is the most critical part of processing, with considerable care and supervision given to maximise the accuracy of the readings.

Ready for distribution: Each graded pair is given a written prescription, stored in a plastic bag and sorted into boxes of similarly graded spectacles, then packed into recycled lions Christmas cake boxes. The cake boxes are stored in their prescription group ready for export.

Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, humanitarian groups and Christian missions throughout the world, distribute the donated spectacles

to needy people in remote locations. Wherever possible, trained staff set up temporary field stations, where hundreds of people will wait for hours for the Recycle for Sight team to arrive.

Reading glasses are very useful, as many recipients are in need of visual correction to help them perform close up tasks. Sunglasses are beneficial for people living near the equator, especially those with cataracts, to shield their eyes from the suns damaging rays.

It’s remarkable to think that 90% of the discarded second hand spectacles donated, become the gift of sight to a child or parent in the third world.

Please donate your used spectacles and sunglasses (no cases please) at the Boyup Brook Community Resource Centre or the Blackwood Basin Group office.

The continued gift of sight is in your

WANTED

Mountain Bike Riders

As a lot of you already know, I love cycling in the bush, and during the summer months, it's a good time to show you where in and around town this can be done. We'll ride every week on Saturday morning into the bush at 9am. Everyone with a bike is invited if you can ride. I'll make sure this is a social event, meaning we'll wait for each other. Please don't feel you've got to be a super athlete to be there. Kids are welcome! They are more keen when other kids ride as well and so their skills and resilience on the bike increases. I'll show you even our secret little technical track. We start from the parking of St Mary’s school, which is on the corner of Jayes and Knapp street in town. For the more serious riders amongst us, once the children have had enough we go a bit further. Again I'll make sure it's possible for you.

If you feel like it, join us for coffee at the Treehouse cafe after. If you’d like to notify me that you’re coming, like us on Facebook. The event name is Boyup Brook Mountain Bike ride.

their knowledge on feral pig management with workshop participants.

“Providing landholders with the knowledge and skills to manage feral pigs and an insight into the pest itself, will improve their confidence to undertake effective pest management on their properties. The workshops will also provide an opportunity to network with experienced pest management operators, that may provide them with support and/or advice into the future,” Jason said.

The workshops are aimed at private landholders who are concerned about the impacts of feral pigs on their properties and livelihood.

“The management of declared pests on private property is the responsibility of all property owners and managers across Western Australia,” Jason said. “Effective and ethical pest management is an integral part of any farming system and the significant economic benefits of managing pests is not only a benefit to the agricultural industry, but also the natural environment.’’

The first workshop is scheduled to be held at Rylington Park, Institute of Agriculture Boyup Brook, on Thursday the 16th of February 2017 from 10am to 3pm. The second workshop is being held at Darkan Town Hall, West Arthur, on Friday the 17th of February 2017 from 12noon to 4:30pm. This workshop will be followed by a Community Sundowner hosted by Wagin-Woodanilling Landcare Zones Annabelle Garrett, to discuss future Biosecurity and Pest Management issues with local landholders.

If anyone is interested in attending either of these Workshops, please contact Karrie Williamson at the BBG office 9765 1555 or by emailing [email protected]

Landholders in the Upper Blackwood region have the opportunity to attend a free community workshop focused on feral pig management.

In the past few years, feral pigs have become a concern for many landholders within the Blackwood and neighbouring catchments, which has been recognised by the Blackwood Basin Group (BBG).

“The increase in landholder concern and the lack of community knowledge surrounding Feral Pig Management, has been an issue raised by community members with the Project Officers here at Blackwood Basin Group,” BBG project Officer Karrie Williamson said.

Department for Agriculture and Food (DAFWA) Biosecurity Officer Jason Dearle said, “Feral pigs not only cause damage to pasture and crops as well as water resources through rutting and wallowing, but are also considered to be a significant threat to biosecurity, with the species being recognised as potential vector of serious diseases that can be transmitted to livestock.”

To assist landholders with the issues surrounding feral pig management, the Blackwood Basin Group, in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture and Food, will be holding two Free Community Feral Pig Management Workshops in early February. Two officers from DAFWA, Jason Dearle (Biosecurity Officer) and Dr Peter Adams (Development Officer), will share

A New Year, a New Team and a New Harcourts Hero Campaign!

One might not be blamed for thinking that with the recent changes at Harcourts Bridgetown that Principal John Ranieri

is gathering his own version of Charlies Angels (or perhaps building a sort of corporate harem!) with an all-female team

now on board.

In addition to the well-established Property Consultants Cathy Willis and Sue Moscarda, new to the team are Rental

Property Manager Brandie Kenna and Marketing Manager & PA Bernadette Johnstone.

Brandie is self-confessed property nut whose real estate career began in the busy Margaret River Region and the past

year has seen her managing an extensive portfolio across the Perth Metro area for a leading Property Management

Company. She is very familiar with the area with her Mum having lived here for over 20 years.

Now a registered Owner/Builder, Brandie also rented for many years so understands the issues and challenges facing

both Landlords and Tenants. When asked why Harcourts, Brandie said she was excited to join a stable, reliable firm

with a long history who have embraced modern technology and utilise the latest real-time reporting systems using iPads

on site to send detailed and accurate reports giving Landlords absolute peace of mind.

Harcourts is a global brand with a strong local focus and 2017 will see the start of the Harcourts Hero campaign. The

quarterly event will see a lucky winner, as voted by the community, pick up $250 worth of Community Vouchers. This

is in keeping with Harcourts long standing advocacy of local business. As Rotarian and Principal John Ranieri

commented “we feel thankful to be so well supported by the community and always want to give back when we can”

Nominations are open now until February 10th and can filled in via Facebook or by picking up a nomination form from

the Harcourts Office, The Cidery or Greenbushes CRC. Get your nominations in and you may be the lucky winner of a

$50 voucher from The Cidery which will be announced at the Prizegiving on Friday March 24th at The Cidery.

Fox Shoot 2017

It is time to shoot some foxes again. With harvest out of the way (almost) they are coming out and begging for attention.

This year’s fox shoot will be held during the weekend of Friday 24 February to Sunday 26 February. The Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA) took over the sponsorship of the Red Card for Rabbits and Foxes and will be giving $5 towards the Royal Flying Doctor Service for each fox and each cat shot at every Red Card event state wide.

In addition to this, a few local farmers have come together and decided to make a donation towards prostate cancer research for every fox shot in the Boyup Brook Shire. We are definitely shooting for good causes – please get on board and help us get rid of as many critters as we possibly can.

Teams can be registered at the Boyup Brook Co-Op, Afgri or by phoning Erlanda on 9765 3012 or 0429 375 609. Registration fees are $10 per team. Be sure to come along on the Sunday morning (26 February) at 9:00 am for the count and weigh-in at the Boyup Brook Pistol Club who will once again provide breakfast.

We have a large number of prizes to give out, thanks to the generous sponsorship from local businesses and firearms and sporting goods dealers in Perth, Bunbury and Busselton. There are also farmers donating towards the prizes for the event.

As in the past we are offering all landholders the opportunity to have some capable shooters come to your property and help you get rid of foxes, cats and rabbits. Preferably, you will drive the ute and the visitors will operate the spotlight, open gates, etc. All visitors will have liability insurance. This way we can form more teams, cover more land and hopefully kill more than last year’s record of 466 foxes. Give us a call and we will organise to send people to you.

Prepare Entries for Show Features

The last class in each section at the show usually is for an article of the show feature.

In the Home Industries the Steward hopes to change this to a “champion” of the past winners of the “Most Outstanding” article to create a feature.

The plan is to invite the past recipients of the Most Outstanding award to submit a piece of their own work for this class.

We need some readers help in locating two of these recipients of their whereabouts or where they live, namely Veronica Drazic and Rosaley Mckeown.

Secondly for the 100th Show in 2018 there will be an “Elizabeth Andrews Memorial CHALLENGE” in the Patchwork-Quilting section for a wall hanging, up to 1 metre, may include appliqué, embroidery, patchwork and/or quilting.

If it tells a story even better. Generally hand work has preference over machine work. So put your thinking caps on and start putting your ideas together now to have ready for the 2018 show.

The Elizabeth Andrews Memorial Challenge for this year is in the Photography section for a collection of three photos taken in the Boyup Brook Shire of a theme of your choice, eg. Home gardens, farm scenes/activities, wildflowers.

This event is supported by Country Arts WA and the State Government, through the Department of Culture and the Arts, Department of Regional Development, Lotterywest and Royalties for Regions.

‘Just the Way It Is’ for Country Music Lovers

“It's a plume of dust down an old dirt road, and hanging off the rails at the rodeo,” and for so many, it's warm February days, sitting in the shade of gum trees by the river, surrounded by the buzz of people connected by a love of music. That's just the way it is at the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival, presented by LiveLighter and for the first time in 2017, the Country Music Club of Boyup Brook is thrilled to be welcoming the legendary Lee Kernaghan to its stage and will undoubtedly give us a show we will never forget in 2017.

Lee Kernaghan has cemented his place as one of the greatest Australian country music singers of our time, and to many, his songs are the embodiment of the Australian country. Winner of 36 Golden Guitars, Lee is second only to Slim Dusty himself, and has had over thirty number one hits on the Australian Country Charts. His most recent album, Spirit of the Anzacs, has been certified platinum and was number one on the Australian charts for four weeks. Lee is a rare blend of success and authenticity, and is a passionate supporter and advocate for rural culture. He has been awarded the Order of Australia in 2004 and was named Australian of the Year in 2008.

The Boyup Brook Country Music Festival is known not only for its amazing headline acts, but also for its incredibly diverse line-up that always has something for everyone. This year's show will deliver an array of local and national talent that country music lovers have come to expect. Crowd favourites such as Patrick McMahon, Karin Page, Gypsy Chicks and Red Ochre provide the audience with their authentic country sounds, while well-known interstate names Dave Prior, Acoustic Juice, Rohan Powell, Greg Champion, Carter and Carter and Justin Standley will cross the borders to grace the stage.

A number of events will be held from Wednesday 15th to Sunday 19th February and begins with a light-hearted Welcome event at the Caravan Park and the launch of the Art Awards at the Town Hall.

Finalists of the West Australian Country Music Awards presented by LiveLighter have just been announced with 9 categories and $9,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. Winners across all of the categories will be announced at the 2017 event, which for the 32nd year running will be held at Boyup Brook during the Festival. Karin Page, winner of Best New Talent and Best Group two years in a row at the Awards with her former band China Doll, will also be returning as the recently crowned the 2016 Toyota Star Maker winner.

The Festival also offers four days of fun with a friendly, country vibe. Street markets bustle with the hum of people and the sounds of buskers on the main street, and the Boyup Brook Ute and Truck Muster provides roaring entertainment through the streets of Boyup Brook.

Campers and caravanners sleep beneath the stars over the weekend. Food stalls provide fresh food on site, and the Country Music Club of Boyup Brook's retail store, Hot Country, offers clothing, music, footwear and accessories for attendees to browse or buy.

The Boyup Brook Art Awards, held in conjunction with the Festival, provide something a little different, showcasing great local talent, and the Festival, gives ample opportunities to bootscoot your way to lighter living, even providing lessons for those whose dancing is a little rusty.

There is something to keep everyone entertained, including workshops, the largest Bush Poets breakfast in WA, and lots of activities for the children. The Festival is built on the backs of its many volunteers, who work tirelessly to create a festival that has become one of the best in the country, and a must visit destination for all country music lovers.

UTE AND TRUCK MUSTER

The Boyup Brook Ute & Truck Muster has been around for 14 years now. Ute, truck, vintage cars and tractor enthusiasts travel from all over the state to show their pride and joy off to the thousands who line the streets of Boyup Brook! This year we are very excited to have the Colonial Clydesdales participate in the parade and then be available for rides in the old-fashioned bow top wagon.

Registrations begin at 8am with everyone lining up at the Old Railway Station, hanging flags, polishing the duco and having a chat with likeminded motor fanatics and fans who come down for a pre-parade squiz.

The fun continues at 11am, as the convoy rolls out of the Old Railway yard and hits the streets of Boyup Brook to the applause and appreciation of the crowd lining the streets. The parade ends up at the Hockey Oval next to the Music Park where they assemble for judging and spectators can have a closer look and talk to the owners if they wish.

There will be plenty of fun and games in the Ute & Truck Muster area as usual and this year the Ute & Truck Muster Stage will feature the very talented Hayden McGlinn, Velvet Edge and Tom Fisher & the Layabouts so you can sit back and enjoy the atmosphere.

BUSH POETS BREAKFAST

Bush Poetry continues to add an amazing atmosphere to the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival, with the Sunday morning Bush Poet’s Breakfast being among the biggest and best in Australia. Leading the herd of bush poets that descend on our Festival, we welcome Robyn Sykes and Dave Proust (Prousty).

Both are well known of the festival circuit in the Eastern States. Robyn Sykes writes, observes, works and learns on a farm in south-west NSW. The Australian Champion Bush Poet studied crocodiles, lived in Japan and edited the Yass Tribune. She is an award winning writer and poet and has performed her original poetry around Australia and in New Zealand.

Many people remember ‘Prousty’, as he is better known, from his appearance at Boyup Brook in 2010. He was a huge hit with his outrageous humour and antics, and his habit of constantly pushing the boundaries. Be prepared for the crowd participation part of his performance. No one is safe! Even his long-suffering wife Therese bears the brunt of many his stories. But there is also a serious side to him, and Dave has poems on the hardships of farming through to the tragedy of war.

Among the WA poets for this Festival are past State Champions Peter Blyth and Christine Boult. Peter had a farm at Salmon Gums called “Bugger Up Downs”, and has written many poems based on his experiences there. Christine is a very talented performer who is currently touring the East and wowing audiences on that side of the country.

Peg Vickers hails from Albany. She has an amazing sense of humour and regales her audiences with the exploits of Grandpa, as well as many other hilarious poems. Peg has the knack of ending her poems with a punch-line that no-one saw coming. She has won the “Poets Brawl” several times at the Bowling Club session on the Saturday morning of the festival.

Roger Cracknell has developed into an accomplished performer since he first came to Boyup Brook in 2010. Roger has written many funny poems, but he also has several of Henry Lawson’s poems in his repertoire. With four programs featuring bush poetry, there is ample opportunity for all poets, whether beginners or seasoned campaigners, to have a go

Other Poets this year include: Brian Langley, Peter Nettleton, Irene Conner, Dave Smith, John Hayes, Rob Gunn, Jim Riches, and our very own Bill Gordon. There are numerous other Bush Poetry events on throughout the festival days and are all within the programme book.

Assistance for Small Properties

Courses and events are being planned to engage, enthuse and assist owners of small rural properties.

Managing a property can be hard work. Unfortunately sometimes dreams of a rural lifestyle are broken because it all seems too much and too hard.

Now a collaboration between a consortium of local organisations led by the Blackwood Environment Society, the State Natural Resource Management Office and funding by ‘Royalties for Regions’ has seen the start of a project to assist small landholders understand the ‘nitty gritty’ of owning and managing a property, and how to make it work, and work well.

Presently the project is concentrating on the 900 small landholders in the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes, and we invite you to register interest in being a part of the project.

You will be invited to a series of free workshops, field days and property visits (called the ‘Picnic Tours’). There will be introductory events in Perth for absentee owners and we intend to have a presence at the Balingup Small Farm Field Day on 22nd April. The workshops and field days will cover a wide range of topics from helping you ensure that your property has enough water, through essential livestock management to living with the native fauna and flora on your property, and keeping pests and weeds at bay, and much more.

What the project needs now are your contact details so that we can send you more information about events, and details of our Facebook page and website, which should be starting soon. Please contact the project manager, Adrian Williams, to register your interest. Phone (08) 9761 4370 or 0427 086 299, or email [email protected].

Craft Hut

Boyup Brook Arts and Craft Group have begun 2017 with discussions about starting up a project to supply cloth shopping bags for people to borrow and return (called Boomerang Bags) We are hoping to set up a large box at your local stores and fill it with handmade cloth bags( using recycled material) that can be used by YOU to take your shopping home in rather than use Plastic bags which end up in landfill. The idea is to endeavour to make Boyup Brook plastic bag free or at least reduce the number of plastic bags we need to send to landfill.

We are presently approaching our local IGA for their support in this project. So watch this space. As usual the group are planning to supply Devonshire teas at the Country Music Festival as well as some handmade goodies on our stall.

We are very lucky to have been the recipients of a large amount of pottery/ceramic gear donated by a family from Lake Clifton and are busy collecting it and storing in our new shed. This will keep us busy for a while to come.

We are also planning to pave the outside area of our shed and are looking for donations of yellow sand used for paving .If you have any or know someone who has and wants to get rid of it we are happy to collect it. Just contact either myself on 0429399739 or Mary-Anne Brlevich 97651149

Our AGM will be held on March 2nd at the Craft Hut so if you are interested come along and join us on the corner of Barron Street and Jayes Rd .

Mitchell Wins Wool Store Prize

The lucky winner of a Bunnings Voucher valued at $800 was Rob Mitchell of Dinninup via Boyup Brook.

The Boyup Brook Wool Store annually conducts a promotion and prize draw for clients which runs from October to December. The prize was drawn by local Post Mistress, Yvonne Dent, at the Boyup Brook Post office.

Rob was delighted with his prize, especially as he had been in the draw for the last few years without winning anything.

Second, and third, prizes both went to Jasmine Tipene of Boyup Brook, again drawn by Yvonne Dent.

What’s Your Bushfire Survival Plan?

If you live in or near bush, fire is a real risk to you and your family. Preparing yourself, your family and your home is your responsibility. A Bushfire Survival Plan will help you take action and avoid making last minute decisions that could prove deadly during a bushfire.

Develop a Plan When developing your plan, decide if you will leave for a safer

place, which may be to relocate to family or friends, or stay to actively defend your home

If you live alone you may like to form a plan with a neighbour Make sure you put your plan in writing, give everybody their

own tasks and have a list of actions to take if there is a bushfire

Keep it in an easy to find place and make sure everyone knows where it is

Practice your plan Once you have developed your plan, practice it with your

family or neighbours Review it every year

Last year flew by with so many activities that a final year ‘report’ just didn’t happen! So before the New Year starts, it seems timely that we comment on the past and tell you of some things already lined up for this term.

Camping is always a top priority for the Guides and yes, we did do a canvas camp in November at “Grindon”. The grass was still a bit green and the paddock looked great with different coloured tents here and there. Tracking was quite a feature of the camp and the girls successfully followed two trails to the rubbish tip where they enjoyed scrounging for materials to make into a recycled object. The most popular were old car tyres which were brought back to camp and converted into swings. Another trail, which provided them with ‘treasures’ was a little more challenging as the gifts were hidden in round hay bales. Needless to say, where sweets are involved, they were all found! Several skits were written which when performed caused much hilarity. Cooking on a protected open fire was also a challenge but the meals were great! The weekend climaxed with parents arriving to witness the Promise Ceremony for two new Guides. Great weekend.

Following camp, it was time to prepare for our Christmas visit to the hospital and the Lodge. The Guides sang various carols interspersed with narrative giving the history and meaning of the Christmas tree and its decorations. The girls had made the decorations from three ply wood and painted them adding generous amounts of glitter to make them bright and pretty.

Boyup Brook Girl Guides At the end of the story, the tree, complete with star, looked very attractive. Each of the residents was given a parcel of the same decorations for their Christmas tree.

Following the devastation of the Yarloop fires, Guides and some dedicated parents decided to assist the people of Yarloop by potting on all types of plants – flowers, fruit trees, strawberries, etc. – to both give them a patch of colour to brighten their day and/or to have something that was growing and would provide produce. Two car loads of plants were taken to the Harvey Council for distribution. Sincere thanks to all who participated in this service project – they were much appreciated.

Now the New Year begins with Thinking Day – a day to celebrate the joint birthdays of the Founders of Scouting and Guiding. A trip to Gnomesville with more painted gnomes to place in the Girl Guide horseshoe will happen when it is a little cooler. A special mention for Cheyenne Beagley – she has joined the Unit and has started her leadership training. It is wonderful having another Leader to assist in the Unit. There will also be a surprise program as Cheyenne progresses through her training.

Finally, a reminder – Girl Guides meet immediately after school finishes each Monday until 5.00pm. But – our first meeting is not until Monday 13th February. We’re looking forward to a new year of fun and activity and will welcome new girls to our happy band.

CoMHAT Update

With our children heading back to school to start a new year, they may feel a little anxious and worried.

Physical reactions to anxiety can be extremely scary for kids. What can you do?

The mind and body affect one another. Anxious thoughts can trigger bodily reactions. Bodily reactions can cause more anxious thoughts. It can be a vicious cycle. Fortunately there is a way to break the cycle.

When your child has a PHYSICAL reaction to their anxiety, treat it with a PHYSICAL response. Instead of trying to offer ‘logic’ to quell the anxiety, teach your child to talk to their body in a different way.

Here are 4 methods which can help: 1) Deep breathing 2) Exercise - ask your child to get up and walk around 3) Engage in a tight, long hug 4) Invoke an emotion that causes a physical response like

laughing

“Depression, Anxiety and Panic Attacks are not signs of weakness. They are signs of trying

to remain strong for far too long.”

Farm Safety is Everyone’s Business

Many of us have had a ‘close call’ during our time at work – this can be magnified when working alone, at heights and with both sophisticated and also basic machinery which is the norm on many farms.

Farmsafe WA Alliance urges the farming industry and any visitors to farms to continue to “Think safe” and look for risky situations before acting during busy times and also at school holiday periods as many of accidents and fatalities seem to occur during school holiday periods.

It is important to note that risky and difficult situations can arise when the workplace – ‘the farm’ - is the same location as the family home and play areas for children. It appears that many of the tragic accidents that have occurred in the past might have been prevented.

Farmsafe WA Chairman Mike Norton said “On farm safety should never be underestimated. It needs to be front of mind at all times.” Mr Norton added “We urge people not to rush jobs and to be always thinking ahead about what might happen – particularly if you are on a quad bike or tractor and if you are unsure of terrain.”

The Farmsafe WA Alliance focus will continue to be on supporting the agriculture and food industry and service providers to the industry and we will continue to campaign for and on behalf of farm safety. There were less deaths in Western Australia in 2016 than other states, however even one fatality is one too many!

Mr Norton added “Death and injury on country roads and farms are a huge burden to all those directly affected – including family and friends and even the local ambulance volunteers. We all need to take personal responsibility to keep our farms and communities injury free”

Providing a safe workplace is an important and integral part of doing business on farms – and it is most importantly for everyone to realise its legislation. Farmsafe WA Alliance are continuing to work hard to provide effective solutions that are easy to implement and not complex.

“As an industry and globally Western Australians farmers are leaders in production and innovation in agriculture, it makes sense that we can also lead in regards to farm safety.” Mr Norton added.

There are some things God will do for us, and other things He expects us to do for ourselves. ‘Blessed… is the man whom You discipline and instruct, O Lord, and whom You teach from Your law, that You may grant him [power to calm himself and find] peace in the days of adversity.’ (Psalm 94:12–13 AMP)

Do you want the ability to stay calm regardless of the circumstances? To remain cool when the heat is on? To be an instrument of peace wherever you go? To be on top of the circumstances instead of under them?

Today God, in essence, is saying to you: ‘Live by My Word in every area of your life. Learn to be sensitive to My voice; quick to respond and to obey. My yoke is easy and My burden is light. I’ll never give you anything too hard to handle or too heavy to carry. Give me your concerns—one by one as they arise. Delight yourself in the assurance of My love, My provision and My protection, and I’ll give you the desires of your heart.

Because the devil is ‘the accuser’ he’ll constantly point to your flaws and tell you you’re not worthy. Don’t listen—he’s the father of lies! I’ve saved you by My grace and positioned you in Christ. I see you through His atoning blood, therefore you are always accepted in My eyes. Give Me all your anxieties and cares. Begin to live in the present, not the past or the future.

Look for My blessings and you’ll find them. Enjoy life in all its fullness, for this is My plan for you this year.’

“HIGH HOPES!”

They phoned up the Dentist and got me a date –

I’m sure not impressed, I have to relate! -

Would you care to be gallant and take my place,

As I have no desire that dentist to face!

I can see myself quaking in that chair –

I’d rather be anywhere else but there!

I remember my Mum saying ‘Yes my golly,

Go and be brave and you’ll get a lolly!’

So on second thoughts I’d better just go –

That dentist may have lollies, I just hope so!!

The place to list you club’s upcoming sporting event, games roster or publish results.

The Boyup Cricket Club only played one game in the month of January. In a home game against last season’s Premiers Dingup, Boyup were in need of a win to keep in touch with the top 4.

Dingup won the toss and elected to bat, and from the outset started playing attacking cricket. With the score at 2-96 after 15 overs, it looked like Boyup might be chasing a large total.

Enter newcomer to the Boyup Brook Cricket Club, Daniel Hopkins, who proceeded to tear through Dingup's middle to lower order, taking 4-38 in a great display of bowling. Coupled with a few great run outs from veterans Brendon Mead and Scott Tweedie, Boyup bowled Dingup out for 124.

In reply to the chase, Boyup were off to a steady start with openers Scott Tweedie and youngster Jakob Marsh. When Tweedie was dismissed for 11 and Leigh Clark soon after for 4, Boyup were in a precarious position at 2-25. Tristan Mead came and left pretty quickly, but not before he had scored a run a ball 26. Tim Mead hit a four on his first ball at the crease, but that was all he troubled the score, with the game evenly positioned at 5-64.

Cricket Catch Up The game soon turned in Boyup's favour as Jakob continued to hold down his end, whilst skipper Ty Bancroft played positively. Jakob with a fantastic score of 25 and Ty scoring a quick-fire 32 saw Boyup on the verge of victory.

With 10 runs to win, cousins Rowan (17) and Brendon Mead (17) saw Boyup over the line to post a fantastic win, finishing Boyup's innings on 148.

Boyup posted a hard fought victory over Forestry to enter the top 4. Boyup batted first and when the top order all failed Boyup were in strife at 3-20. But with Ben Mead (24), Ty Bancroft (30) and particularly Brendon Mead (52), with the support of Jacob Maw and Rhien Lloyd, Boyup finished their innings with a competitive total of 156.

In reply, Boyup bowled and fielded well throughout the innings to bowl Forestry out for 123 and post a 33 run victory. Daniel Hopkins again starred with the ball taking 3 wickets. Ty Bancroft, Leigh Clark and Tristan Mead grabbed 2 wickets each as Boyup posted their 4th win in a row.

There are two home games in February: February 4th vs Bridgetown February 25th vs Northcliffe

With social tennis falling on December 31, the Tennis Club held its own New Years Eve celebrations after social play. It was a great way to see out 2016 and welcome the New Year.

January sees tennis fans spoilt for choice when it comes to watching the many Championships held in the lead up to the Australian Open. The Hopman Cup in Perth certainly enticed many local club members to go along, particularly with the chance to see Roger Federer.

Locally, there was also a Hopman Cup style event held with a fantastic turn out. Nine countries were represented with pairs selected by drawing a nation’s flag out of a box! The format was Fast 4 with each pair playing a men’s singles, women’s singles and mixed doubles. At the end of play, it was team Australia (Craig Nield and Ros Chilwell) and team Poland (Ben Thompson and Carmel Page) who won their pools and took home special diamanté encrusted tennis balls.

An initiative by Tennis Australia allocated players in the main draw of the Australian Open to tennis clubs around the country to support. Heather Watson from Great Britain was Boyup Brook’s player and there were mixed emotions when she knocked out Samantha Stosur in the first round.

Boyup Brook followed this initiative with each member being allocated a player to support and follow during the event. Congratulations to Molly Keogh and Rachel Staniforth-Smith who were drawn winners Serena Williams and Roger Federer.

Tennis Tales With school resuming, social ladies and junior tennis recommences on February 2.

Upcoming senior events include the Handicap Singles and Mixed Doubles Fast 4 event on February 4 and the annual Loving Cup on February 11.

Entries are also now open for the 2017 Boyup Brook Open Tournament which will be held on March 4 and 5. Visit the website www.boyupbrooktennis.myclub.org.au for entry forms and conditions of entry, or call Jodi on 0427 095 533.

Juniors Participate in International Match

Three young Boyup Brook cricketers were recently able to attend the One Day International game between Australia and Pakistan in Perth.

Josh Miller, Cameron and Jakob Marsh took part in the Boundary Support Squad coordinated by the Commonwealth Bank. The boys were required to sit outside the boundary and collect any balls that went for a 4 or a 6 and return them to the fielding team. The Boyup lads took their turn on the boundary during the Pakistan innings and got a close up view of Australia’s bowling and fielding.

The opportunity to attend a first class game was greatly appreciated by the boys and their families. Each member of the boundary support squad received entry to the game for themselves, a parent and another child, as well as shirts and caps to be worn on the day and a back pack with other goodies.

The boys took the opportunity before the game to watch members of the Australian team warming up in the nets.

Being part of the crowd at such an event is always awesome and the boys are enjoying sharing the stories of their experience. They are grateful to the Commonwealth Bank and Boyup Brook Cricket Club for the opportunity to attend the game and participate in the event. Above: Josh Miller, Jakob and Cameron Marsh

Rotary Tour of the Blackwood

The Tour of the Blackwood is the brainchild of a group of local cyclists with a passion for their community and the future of its youth uppermost in mind.

To this end, funds raised will go to Blackwood Youth Action Inc. (BYA), with the focus on being to give our rural youth access to counselling with a trained metal health specialist, and ensuring rural youth have the same opportunities for support and assistance as their city friends.

BYA will be working in conjunction with GP DownSouth to deliver its initiative, taking inspiration from GP DownSouth’s recent success in the Peel region with PYMS and Peel Youth Medical Services. Blackwood Youth Action and GP Down South are in preparation to deliver mental health education and treatment in 2017 through schools in Boyup Brook, Bridgetown, Manjimup and Pemberton.

The Rotary Tour of The Blackwood will hold its inaugural bike ride on 22nd April 2017. The Rotary Tour of The Blackwood is a ride, not a race. Three picturesque courses have been created to challenge a wide range of riders’ fitness and experience.

How can you help if cycling is not your thing?

You could forward the website details (http://

www.blackwoodtour.info/) to someone you know would be keen

to ride. Or you may want to donate money to this regional cause

by sponsoring me (Michiel Mel) or somebody else. You can do

this by going to the website and click donate.

Fun For All at Pony Club

The Blackwood Horse and Pony Club members were joined at their club grounds on the corner of Bridgetown Boyup Brook Road and Boyup Brook Greenbushes Road, by Grandparents and even Great Grandparents who travelled down from Gelorup for the last rally for 2016. All enjoyed a beautiful fun filled day of show jumping, hacking, a “Handy Pony” course, games and pony dress-ups.

The day started with hacking and “best presented pony”. The judges took into account the ages and abilities of the children preparing their ponies with minimal assistance from parents so ponies sported manes in bunches and partly plaited as well as beautifully plaited and presented animals.

The show jumping - at appropriate heights for the rider’s capabilities – was a delight to watch with most riders doing clear rounds. The “Handy Pony” course was a challenge for both ponies and riders who had to complete various tasks, some with the riders mounted and others requiring the riders to dismount and lead their ponies through obstacles. The games saw the ponies and riders divided into groups, with all ages and capabilities in each group, and caused a lot of excitement and cheering for the teams with many close finishes.

Once again the dress–up competition brought out the imagination and creativity of the club members. There was a mermaid on a “sea” horse, Santa with a Christmas tree horse, Pocahontas on an American Indian war horse, a bee on a garden of flowers, Maid Marion whose horse was Robin Hood and Rainbow Brite on her horse Starlight to name a few.

The club members are now looking forward to the 2017 year of Pony Club which commences on the 19th of February. Registrations will commence at 8:30am and riding instruction will start about 9:30am.

The club would very much welcome new members and even if you don’t yet have a pony it may be possible to organise a spare pony to be brought along by one of the members.

The club allows interested people to attend two rallies as a trial to see if you want to join before making a commitment for the year. If you have any questions ring our president Sue Brown on 04317 17 470.
