PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Walwanni and hello,

As usual there is so much to celebrate and acknowledge with the outstanding efforts of our students. The sporting

success continues to grow week by week and our students’ achievements at school and out of school sports are

exceptional.

Year 12 are at the end of their secondary schooling journey and this has occurred so quickly with Trial Examinations and

students completing major works in Industrial Technology, Textiles Technology, Visual Art, Drama, Extension English,

Extension History and Music. The students must be complimented on how outstanding their projects were across all the

subjects. In addition, they are so appreciative of the extra time staff have dedicated to them to ensure every student

succeeds.

Last week, I was fortunate enough to spend time with the students participating in the Garinda Gubaa Garidja Canoe

Cultural program - “Youth of the Bark Canoe”. This is an amazing cultural program which gives students greater

understanding of their culture and the opportunity to work with Elders across several communities to gain important skills

and knowledge. I am truly excited to see where this opportunity takes our students and their communities.

Year 10 students have participated in the VALID Science state wide testing this week while Year 11 are preparing for

their end of course examinations in Week 9. We wish them all the best!

I enjoyed the P&C meeting during Week 6 in Bermagui and look forward to the next meeting in Narooma on Monday 16

September.

Thank you to the Parents and Carers who attended the recent Senior School interviews last week. It’s great to be able to

have individual time with the teachers to discuss your child’s educational journey.

Have a fabulous fortnight and, remember, “Together we soar”.

I asked some of the students why they liked Breakfast Club. This is what

they said…

“It’s a nice place to hang out, there’s good music, food and drink and it’s

warm.” Patrick

“Because I don’t have enough time in the morning to make breakfast at

home.” Bella

“Good music, yummy food, good vibes, it’s warm.” Zehara

“Because sometimes I don’t have breakfast at home.” Anonymous

A HUGE thanks to Narooma Woolworths for their contributions each

week to make this program possible! Your generosity is greatly

appreciated!

We are looking for a couple of volunteers from the community to come

and help out with Breakfast Club. Please call the school and ask to speak

to Phoebe or Mrs Rowland if you are interested in helping. You will need

a working with children check number.

Kind regards,

Phoebe Adams (School Chaplain) and Mrs Rowland

BREAKFAST CLUB AT NAROOMA HIGH

This term, students have been making the most of breakfast now being

available at Narooma High. There’s been plenty of cheese toasties and hot

milos going around as well as some good chats and even some dancing! It’s

safe to say students leave with a full belly and a smile on their face.

I’d like to commend students for their positive attitudes and help in setting up

and cleaning up each morning! It really is a fun and uplifting atmosphere and

a great way to start the morning for our students.

NHS DEBATE TEAM Last weekend Luka Potts, Aisha Thomas and Crystal Elmasri represented Narooma High School at the National

Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA). Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Narooma they participated in 3 days

of lively debate, consistently demonstrating respect and support. They have described the experience for us:

“Last weekend we travelled up to Canberra to participate in MUNA, held at the Museum of Australian Democracy. Narooma High represented Syria and we fought valiantly during the debate. We made lifelong friend with Egypt and the rest of Bloc 3. It was an amazing experience, and although at times stressful and daunting, we would highly recommend to anyone interested. A huge thank you to Ms Wicks who took us up and guided us through the experience. Love Luka, Aisha and Crystal. #Sih-ree-hah #peaceinthemiddleeast”

The Junior and Senior Roborebels robotics team continue to meet 4 times a week. So far this term the Senior Roborebels worked through the holidays into week one to complete their robot Buzz ready for the Duel Down Under. We travelled on the school bus to Macquarie University at the end of Week 1 for 3 days of competition in Deep Space. Our robot consistently performed well, no more electrical problems of schwarf (nuisance metal shavings) encountered in March, thanks to the rewiring of the electrical team headed by Will. The arm to pickup and dispatch the hatch consistently worked well and we managed to attach a claw for cargo carrying. Congratulations to Adam and Andrew for leading the mechanical team in completing all the hardware. The coding team, led by Mrs Potts overcame the code issues to get all parts on the move. The drive team of Hayes and Josh consistently performed well on the field. Collectively, all this effort led to the team being picked on the 2nd alliance with a Melbourne University team and UNSW University team. Congratulations on making it to the quarter finals and receiving our first FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) trophy from the judges for STEM outreach. This is my favourite competition as everyone is competitive but so helpful and we, as a team, learn so much. Thank you to the school executive, P&C and our sponsors Club Narooma, QUOTA for getting us to these great competitions. better together. Students have the power to help the

cities, towns, and places they call home reach new

heights. We are now building robots and coding them

to complete 14 missions on the table in 3 rounds of

2.5 minute each. We will compete in the Regional

finals for this in Ulladulla on November 16, go

Roborebels.

ROBOTICS

Both teams held a demonstration at the Narooma Town Library for Science Week in Week 4. Displaying their robots, explaining how they work and driving them, with an opportunity for the public to drive the EV3 in a game of sumo bot. Great fun was had by all!

Today our class tested everyday things to see if they were acids. We used cabbage juice. We found

acids went red. by Noah Thomas

INDUSTRIAL ARTS NEWS

It’s that time of year again, with Year 12 finalising their Major Timber Projects. They were marked on Tuesday 3 September for their HSC.

Junior AECG members received awards and AIME jumpers for all their hard work representing and supporting other Aboriginal students.

NHS GIRLS NRL

Great day of tackle footy at Kezie Apps Shield in Batemans Bay. Narooma 14s and 16s winning the day and the 12s just missing out, in a nail biter in the final. So proud of all the girls! They all played like champions . Well done.

STUDENT OF THE YEAR QUEST

Geena Thomas, of Year 11, took part in the Quota International Region 14 Student of the Year Quest Final yesterday. While she didn’t take out the win (that went to Niamh Christopher of Smith’s Hill High School), Geena represented our school with articulated poise and pride. All contestants were incredibly well spoken and passionate about their topic. As one of the judges said, the future is in good hands.
