work on loose leaf notebook paper)

Today’s Bell Work Question

Objectives

OWrite in agendas: Straw Rocket Challenge

Safety Test Friday!

OSet up STEM Notebooks

STEM Notebook Instructions

1. Write your first and last name and class period on the outside cover. Feel free to draw, put a cool sticker, or picture on the front that relates to STEM.

2. Number the first 20 pages, front and back. When you open up the notebook, odd numbers are on the right and even numbers on the left.

3. Tape one large envelope into the front cover of the notebook. Label the envelope “bell work” You will store your bell work for the week in the “bell work” envelope. We will keep post-it notes in the basket at your group for the “Brain Board” and tweeting.

STEM Notebook Instructions

4. Go to the back of the notebook. At the top of the last 5 pages, title the pages Vocabulary Reference. You will use these pages to make note of important vocabulary words.

5. When improving your research, lab work, reflection journals, etc. DO NOT erase in your scientist’s notebook. Put a line through it (NO scribbling) and initial or just make your improvements below the original writing.

6. Bell work will be kept on the same sheet of paper for the week. You will date each day, write the full answer, and justify your answers (explain), unless instructed differently.

7. Bell work is turned into your class period’s inbox every Friday.

Straw Rocket ChallengeO NASA scientists, engineers, and astronauts

work daily to solve problems associated with orbital paths of satellites and the rockets that will launch these satellites. They find solutions when equipment does not work and develop designs to handle new challenges—even challenges other countries might be facing.

O As a NASA engineer, you will help North Korea with their rocket challenge. Construct a prototype of a rocket that can be placed into orbit to reach a specific destination, while minimizing the dangers of populated countries nearby.

O As you test, you will always find ways to make it work better. Improving design based on testing is called the engineering design process.

Essential questions to ponder…

OWhat is the identified control and variables in our experimental investigation?

OWhat procedures are needed to test the design features of a prototype?

OHow can we use the Engineering Design Process (EDP) to construct a prototype that meets certain specifications?

OSee any important vocab?

Use a Post-It Note to “tweet” about the following question:

How are you going to use the EDP to design

and construct your straw rocket prototype?
