Whenever I take a group ofpeople out fpr a summer eveningof stargazing, some one is certain
*% to ask to be shown Orion. My„ reply that Orion is not visible in
summer always evokes a sur- •prised, "Why I didn't know thestars moved! I always thoughtthey were fixed."
Each star is, of course, fixed inrelation to the other stars, but itis not fixed in its relationship tothe earth. For the earth isspinning on its axis under the .
'" stars j rotating!; beneath them*¦ from west 'UfrgSsV and thus is
causing the stars to seem to moveacross the sky from east to westin the opposite directon. So hourby hour the evening sky changesas stars rise; in the east andslowly ajch across the sky, ap-parency moving in the same ;'direction as the sun appears tomove during the day.
If Jthe spin of the earth were theonly factor, the same stars wouldrise in the-east night after nightand cross ' the I sky;, on thesame nightly time schedule; -However, the earth is hot onlyspinning but it is also speedingeastward as well in its great orbitaround the sun. As a result thismovement to the east causes astar that is found in a certainplace at a particular time on onenight to be found there fourminutes earlier on the succeedingnight. Because of this four minutechange, which amounts to twohours inthecourse of a month, astar will be found at the end of amonth some distance fartherwest that it was at the same timeat the beginning of the month,Eventually this westwardprogression will cause the star todisappear below the westernhorizon, not to be seen again untilmonths later it once more rises inthe east
Thus the constellations, exceptfor those known as circumpolarbecause they circle close to theNorth Star, are not visiblethroughout the year, but onlyduring certain seasons. Orion, forexample, is a winter con-stellation, never seen on summerevenings, while the Scorpion is asummer constellation, neverseen in winter.
