    PREFACE

The M.B.A programme is well structured and integrated course of business studies. The main objective of

practical training at M.B.A level is to develop skill in student by supplement to the theoretical study of

business management in general. Industrial training helps to gain real life knowledge about the industrial

environment and business practices. The M..B.A programme provides student with a fundamental

knowledge of business and organizational functions and activities, as well as an exposure to strategic

    thinking of management.

In every professional course, training is an important factor. Professors give us theoretical knowledge of

various subjects in the college but we are practically exposed of such subjects when we get the training in

the organization. It is only the training through which I come to know that what an industry is and how it

works. I can learn about various departmental operations being performed in the industry, which would, in

return, help me in the future when I will enter the practical field.

Training is an integral part of M.B.A and each and every student has to undergo the training for in a

company and then prepare a project report on the same after the completion of training. During this whole

training I got a lot of experience and came to know about the management practices in real that how it

differs from those of theoretical knowledge and the practically in the real life. In todays globalize world,

where cut throat competition is prevailing in the market, theoretical knowledge is not sufficient.

Information Technology (IT) industry in India is one of the fastest growing industries. Indian IT industry

has built up valuable brand equity for itself in the global markets. IT industry in India comprises of software

industry and information technology enabled services (ITES), which also includes business process

outsourcing (BPO) industry. India is considered as a pioneer in software development and a favorite

    destination for IT-enabled services.

    7/48

The origin of IT industry in India can be traced to 1974, when the mainframe manufacturer, Burroughs,

asked its India sales agent, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), to export programmers for installing system

software for a U.S. client. The IT industry originated under unfavorable conditions. Local markets were

absent and government policy toward private enterprise was hostile. The industry was begun by Bombay-

based conglomerates which entered the business by supplying programmers to global IT firms located

    overseas.

During that time Indian economy was state-controlled and the state remained hostile to the software industry

through the 1970s. Import tariffs were high (135% on hardware and 100% on software) and software was

not considered an "industry", so that exporters were ineligible for bank finance. Government policy towards

IT sector changed when Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister in 1984. His New Computer Policy (NCP-

1984) consisted of a package of reduced import tariffs on hardware and software (reduced to 60%),

recognition of software exports as a "delicensed industry", i.e., henceforth eligible for bank finance and

freed from license-permit raj, permission for foreign firms to set up wholly-owned, export-dedicated units

and a project to set up a chain of software parks that would offer infrastructure at below-market costs. These

policies laid the foundation for the development of a world-class IT industry in India.

The Indian Information Technology Industry accounts for a 5.19% of the country's GDP and export

earnings as of 2009, while providing employment to a significant number of its tertiary sector workforce.

More than 2.5 million people are employed in the sector either directly or indirectly, making it one of the

biggest job creators in India and a mainstay of the national economy. In 2010-11, annual revenues from IT-

BPO sector is estimated to have grown over US$76 billion compared to China with $35.76 billion and

Philippines with $8.85 billion. India's outsourcing industry is expected to increase to US$225 billion by

2020. The most prominent IT hub is Bangalore. The other emerging destinations are Chennai, Hyderabad

Coimbatore, Kolkata, Kochi, Pune, Mumbai, Ahmadabad, NCR. Technically proficient immigrants from

India sought jobs in the western world from the 1950s onwards as India's education system produced more

engineers than its industry could absorb. India's growing stature in the Information Age enabled it to form

close ties with both the United States of America and the European Union. However, the recent global

financial crises have deeply impacted the Indian IT companies as well as global companies. As a resulthiring has dropped sharply and employees are looking at different sectors like the financial service,

telecommunications, and manufacturing industries, which have been growing phenomenally over the last

    few years.

India's IT Services industry was born in Mumbai in 1967 with the establishment of Tata Group in

partnership with Burroughs. The first software export zone SEEPZ was set up here way back in 1973, the

old avatar of the modern day IT Park. More than 80 percent of the country's software exports happened out

    of SEEPZ, Mumbai in 80s.

Each year India produces roughly 500,000 engineers in the country, out of them only 25% to 30% possessed

both technical competency and English language skills, although 12% of India's population can speak in

English India developed a number of outsourcing companies specializing in customer support via Internet or

telephone connections. By 2009, India also has a total of 37,160,000 telephone lines in use, a total of

506,040,000 mobile phone connections, a total of 81,000,000 Internet userscomprising 7.0% of the

country's population and 7,570,000 people in the country have access to broadband Internet making it the

12th largest country in the world in terms of broadband Internet users. Total fixed-line and wireless

subscribers reached 543.20 million as of November, 2009.

    Formative years (Till 1991)

The Indian Government acquired the EVS EM computers from the Soviet Union, which were used in large

companies and research laboratories. In 1968 Tata Consultancy Servicesestablished in SEEPZ, Mumbai

by the Tata Groupwere the country's largest software producers during the 1960s. As an outcome of the

various policies of Jawaharlal Nehru (office: 15 August 1947 27 May 1964) the economically beleaguered

country was able to build a large scientific workforce, third in numbers only to that of the United States of

America and the Soviet Union. On 18 August 1951 the minister of education Maulana Abul Kalam Azad,

inaugurated the Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur in West Bengal. Possibly modeled after the

Massachusetts Institute of Technology these institutions were conceived by a 22 member committee of

scholars and entrepreneurs under the chairmanship of N. R. Sarkar.

Relaxed immigration laws in the United States of America (1965) attracted a number of skilled Indian

professionals aiming for research. By 1960 as many as 10,000 Indians were estimated to have settled in the

US. By the 1980s a number of engineers from India were seeking employment in other countries. In

response, the Indian companies realigned wages to retain their experienced staff. In the Encyclopedia of

India, Kamdar (2006) reports on the role of Indian immigrants (1980 - early 1990s) in promoting

    technology-driven growth:

The National Informatics Centre was established in March 1975. The inception of The Computer

Maintenance Company (CMC) followed in October 1976. Between 1977-1980 the country's Information

Technology companies Tata Infotech, Patni Computer Systems and Wipro had become visible. The

'microchip revolution' of the 1980s had convinced both Indira Gandhi and her successor Rajiv Gandhi that

electronics and telecommunications were vital to India's growth and development. MTNL underwent

technological improvements. Between 1986-1987, the Indian government embarked upon the creation of

three wide-area computer networking schemes: INDONET (intended to serve the IBM mainframes in India),

NICNET (the network for India's National Informatics Centre), and the academic research oriented

    Education and Research Network (ERNET).

    19912001

Regulated VSAT links became visible in 1985. Desai (2006) describes the steps taken to relax regulationson linking in 1991:

In 1991 the Department of Electronics broke this impasse, creating a corporation called Software Technology

    9/48

Parks of India (STPI) that, being owned by the government, could provide VSAT communications without

breaching its monopoly. STPI set up software technology parks in different cities, each of which provided

satellite links to be used by firms; the local link was a wireless radio link. In 1993 the government began to

allow individual companies their own dedicated links, which allowed work done in India to be transmitted

abroad directly. Indian firms soon convinced their American customers that a satellite link was as reliable as

a team of programmers working in the clients office.

Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) introduced Gateway Electronic Mail Service in 1991, he 64 kbit/s

leased line service in 1992, and commercial Internet access on a visible scale in 1992. Election results were

displayed via National Informatics Centre's NICNET.

The Indian economy underwent economic reforms in 1991, leading to a new era of globalization and

international economic integration. Economic growth of over 6% annually was seen between 1993-2002.

The economic reforms were driven in part by significant the internet usage in the country. The newadministration under Atal Bihari Vajpayeewhich placed the development of Information Technology

among its top five priorities formed the Indian National Task Force on Information Technology and

    Software Development.

Wolcott & Goodman (2003) report on the role of the Indian National Task Force on Information

    Technology and Software Development

Within 90 days of its establishment, the Task Force produced an extensive background report on the state of

technology in India and an IT Action Plan with 108 recommendations. The Task Force could act quicklybecause it built upon the experience and frustrations of state governments, central government agencies,

universities, and the software industry. Much of what it proposed was also consistent with the thinking and

recommendations of international bodies like the

The New Telecommunications Policy, 1999 (NTP 1999) helped further liberalize India's

telecommunications sector. The Information Technology Act 2000 created legal procedures for electronic

    transactions and e-commerce.

Throughout the 1990s, another wave of Indian professionals entered the United States. The number of

Indian Americans reached 1.7 million by 2000. This immigration consisted largely of highly educated

technologically proficient workers. Within the United States, Indians fared well in science, engineering, and

management. Graduates from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) became known for their technical

skills. Thus GOI planned to establish new Institutes especially for Information Technology to enhance this

field. In 1998 India got the first IT institute name Indian Institute of Information Technology at Gwalior.

The success of Information Technology in India not only had economic repercussions but also had far-

reaching political consequences. India's reputation both as a source and a destination for skilled workforcehelped it improve its relations with a number of world economies. The relationship between economy and

    Future of Indian IT Industry

The current scenario in the IT industry of India and the tremendous growth registered in recent years has

generated much optimism about the future of the Indian Information technology industry. Analysts areupbeat about the huge potential of growth in the Information Technology industry in India. The major areas

of benefit that the future growth in the IT industry can generate for the Indian economy are

Exports - The IT industry accounts for a major share in the exports from India. This is expected to grow

further in coming years. The information technology industry is one of the major sources of foreign currency

    or India.

Employment - The biggest benefit of the IT industry is the huge employment it generates. For a

developing country like India, with a huge population, the high rate of employment in the IT sector is a big

advantage. The IT industry is expected to generate employment of 2.2 million by the end of 2008 which is

expected to increase significantly in coming years.

FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) - High inflow of FDI in the IT sector is expected to continue in coming

years. The inflow of huge volumes of FDI in the IT industry of India has not only boosted the industry but

the entire Indian economy in recent years.

The Nasscom- McKinsey report on the IT industry of India projects that the Indian IT industry will reach 87

billion US Dollars by the end of 2008. 2.2 million Employment is expected to be created in the IT industry

according to this report. The report also projects 50 billion US Dollars of IT exports from India by the end of

    2008.

Software exports from India are expected to grow in coming years. New markets for software exports from

India have opened up in the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe. The

reputation that India has earned as a major destination for IT outsourcing has opened further possibilities.

Many developing countries are now using the Indian model for growth in the IT sector.

Another important area of future growth for the IT industry of India is the domestic market. While exports

dominate the IT industry at present, there is huge scope of growth in the domestic market which can be

    tapped in the future.

The US recession has had its share of negative impacts on the Indian IT industry. However, the industry has

faced the challenges posed by the global market and is sustaining its rate of growth. The focus for the futureis to ensure that the benefits of the IT industry percolate to the grassroot levels.

    Challenges before Indian IT Industry

At present there are a number of challenges that are facing the information technology industry of India.

The experts are however of the opinion that there are certain things that need to be done in order to make

sure that India can maintain its status as one of the leading information technology destinations of the world.

The innovation needs to be done in three areas that are connected to the information technology industry of

India such as business models, ecosystems and knowledge. The information technology sector of India also

has to spread the range of its activities and also look at the opportunities in other countries.

The improvement however, also needs to be qualitative rather than just being quantitative. The skill level of

the information technology professionals is one area that needs improvement and presents a considerable

amount of challenge before the Indian information technology industry.

The Indian information technology industry also needs to co-ordinate with the academic circles as well as

other industries in India for better performance and improved productivity. The experts are of the opinion

that the business process outsourcing service providers in India need to change their operations to a way that

is more oriented to the knowledge process outsourcing.

In the recent times a bill has been passed in the state of New Jersey that allows only the citizens or legal

non-Americans to be given contracts. This legislation has also affected some other states like Missouri,

Connecticut, Wisconsin and Maryland. These states are also supposed to be considering these laws and theirimplementation. This is supposed to have an adverse effect on the outsourcing that is the source upon which

the information technology industry of India thrives. The information technology professionals who aim at

working in the country are also likely to be hindered by the legislation as a significant amount of these

professionals have been going to work in the USA for a long time.

customers to serve their customers better"

    Interpretation

42% of purchasing decisions of people are based on the Friends fallowed by 37 % on the family

13%on senior officers and less percentage depend on celebrity endorsements so company do not

invest most on the celebrity endorsement .

From the analysis we can say that most of the respondents that is 38% accepting gift pack with accessories

fallowed by the cash discount 37% and very less people are accepting the coupons and all. So companies

should offer the accessories rather than giving the coupons for shopping and additional services. So that way

they see boost up in their balance sheets.

    Analysis: 10

To know about best media people expose too.

    Interpretation

After doing this analysis we can confess that electronic media is strongest tool for spreading

out the messages in a very effective way that is contributing 55%of the total population are expose to this

media then print media is having 27% penetration in the population. So companies should increase the

number of frequencies of the advertisements in electronic media

for giving the messages to target audience. It will lead to high penetration of ads in less cost

about the holdings by these inferences we cant say that holdings are very effective media in conveying the

    messages in people.

    Interpretion

After considering this data we can say that the brand awareness of HCLs ME BRAND is less

that is only 38% so for the highest brand awareness HCL Company should increase the ads frequencies on

electronic and print media both that will help HCL technologies to gain higher

brand awareness. But one thing is that may or may not be this analysis is correct because of the 56%of the

    sample size is Army personnel.

    Findings

From all Respondents (33%) people is having laptop /desktop that is very less percentage so HCL

Company can increase its association with SBI Bank for giving the loan facility on their DSP

accounts that will generate profit for company and to its stake holders.

Of total students respondents (42%) students are having laptop/ Desktop. This seems to average

concentration of computers in students so company by manufacturing stylish, light weighted, laptops

in reasonable price will lead to its profitability along with its brand image.

One third (31%) of total market is captured by the Dell fallowed by

22%HCL,17%Lennovo,11%eachAcer and HP by considering all these analysis we can say that Dell

is having very good brand image because of its quality and colors.

    42/48

From total respondent (43%) of that is looking for both the attributes quality and price backed by

27%quality,23%priceand very less customers are looking for the gift and all . So IT companies

should look for both quality and price both to establish strong market.

More than one third approx. (43% )of the total sample size prefer laptops of 2.5 kg fallowed by the

27% of population preferring 2 kg so after considering the analysis one can predicts that IT

companies should produce laptops around 2.5 kg the increase their sales figure.

38% of total population prefers coloured laptops fallowed by the light weight35% and mat finish

only10% that is given by the HCL, ACER and other laptop brands.

Approx. one third (30%)of the population wants to purchase from the retail shop fallowed by

28%want to shop by loan facility and companys outlet and online shopping comprising 22%and 20respectively.

More than one third of total population, (38%) accepting gift pack with accessories fallowed by the

cash discount 37% and very less people are accepting the coupons and all.

38%of the total population knows about the HCLS ME BRAND that is very less percentage

so company should increase its expenditure on brand promotions and advertisements will help it to

    enhance its sales.

    Limitations:-

The duration of this IIP was 2 months. It was very short time of span to identify the market and

its customers behavior. So happening during this duration were observed, if more duration was

observed then more findings can be drawn.

This study is revolved around only Army personnel in Pune city. So, this research is based on them. They

are contributing 56% of the total population so the findings may be varying from other sources.

This research consist of the army people serving on rank of Sep, Naik, Hvl. Rarely having the Major,

L/COL, Colonel ect. May be this have the impact on findings?

People are not taking the research work seriously means they are not interested in filling the questionnaire

    properly.

The HCL ME BRANDS brand awareness is very less in the market so company should increase its

advertisement and promotional tool for maximum reach of audience.

Some people are having very poor perception on Indian brands.

Long distance and traffic also created obstacle in the project.

This was non-paid project so some where it felt the need of money but I dont have.

People dont have that much time to sit with you and fill the questionnaire properly so toget better response questionnaire should be paid.

    CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

    The factors to be concede

HCL are quality, colored and light weight of the product. Consumers are found to consider these attributes

as important in making their decision. They should also give special attention to right pricing the product

after taking into consideration the price charged by the competitors.

Since significant relationship is found to exist between income and quality, the marketer must promote the

products keeping the target income group in mind.

Pricing of the product must also consider income group, as significant relationship is found to exist between

income and gift pack, cash discount. Therefore decision regarding the promotional offers should also

    consider income as decisive factors.
