The experts were speak- ing at the ‘Low Vision Camp’ that started at SKIMS Medical College Bemina on Friday. Over 50 patients were registered at the camp which is being organized by Depart- ment of Ophthalmology in collaboration with Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital Delhi as Nodal Agency and Sight Savors India Mumbai as Proj- ect Partners under National Low Vision Project. The camp would continue on Saturday. Jammu and Kashmir is among few states across the country having the Low Vision Project established here. Addressing an inaugural function, the Head of Depart- ment (HOD) Ophthalmol- ogy, Professor Reyaz Ahmad Untoo, briefed the audience about the significance of ‘Low Vision Rehabilitation’ in the interest of improving quality of life in affected patients. “In children, the magnitude of Low Vision is higher in our state as com- pared to national preva- lence of 1.05 per cent. Under the project, only 21 Centres across the country have been established,” he said. He underscored the need for coordinated efforts for rehabil- itation of Low Vision in view of the increased number of patients with Age Related Mac- ular degenerations, advanced diabetic eye disease, advanced glaucomas, high refractive errors, Heredofamilial and macular degradations. The Medical Superinten- dent SKIMS Medical College Hospital, Dr Nazir Ahmad Pandit, appreciated the efforts of the department and Nodal agency for organizing the programme. The Low Vision Special- ist from Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital Delhi, Nasim Akhtar, briefed about the initiatives for Low Vision Rehabilitation through a power point presentation. The function was attended by Faculty, Doctors, para- medical Staff and other staff of the hospital. Deal with Pakistan politically: BJP to UPA Srinagar, Oct 25: With escalation in ceasefire viola- tions on LoC and International Border, Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) on Friday asked the Congress led UPA gov- ernment for a political discourse with Pakistan for ces- sation of hostilities. Addressing a press conference here, the national spokesperson of BJP, Prakash Javedkar, said: “the activi- ties taking place on the border since the last two months are unacceptable.” “Time has come to respond to Pakistan in clear terms. If it does not stop what it is doing, then there are many political ways to teach the country a lesson so that it does not dare to do such things again,” he said. “Ceasefire violations and infiltration attempts on the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir have gone up since Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, met his counterpart, Nawaz Sharief, in New York on September 29. By meeting Sharief, our PM gave a message that the Indian government is soft towards the issue of terrorism,” he said. He said when Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, and Union Home Minister, Sushilkumar Shinde, visited the International Border, the Pakistani troops resorted to heavy shelling. “Pakistan’s whole policy is Kashmir-centric. If there is an issue between India and Pakistan, it is the use of Pakistan’s territory for propagating terrorism against India. This is what is worrying the country and needs to be solved,” he said. “If Dr Singh has said that he is disappointed with the continuous ceasefire violation, let me tell him that this is Pakistan’s continuous activity and they will continue to disappoint you unless concrete action is taken against them. (KNS) Shabir pays surprise visit to Islamabad hospitals Imposes fine on 3 erring officials Srinagar, Oct 25: Minister of State for Health, Shabir Ahmad Khan, during his surprise inspection to Mirza Muhammad Afzal Beg District Hospital, Mother Child Care Hospital Islamabad and Sub District Hospital Bijbehara on Thursday evening imposed fine of Rs 1000 each on 3 officials for dereliction of their duties. The Minister during his visit to these hospitals inspected the Emergency, Surgery, Ortho, Gynae wards, Sick and Child- care and SNCU units and blood banks and enquired about the facilities being provided to the patients. Meanwhile, the Minister gave nod for additional Ambu- lance for MCH, Islamabad besides Rs. 10 lakh for Hospital renovation. He said government contemplates to make this MCH as a first Referral Unit and in this regard a proposal has been mooted to the Centre for approval of funds. He said that an ICU ward with required diagnostic equipment would be setup in new Hospital block of Dis- trict hospital Islamabad. He gave on the spot direction to the concerned for further improvement in the sanitation facilities in and around the hospitals besides ensuring hassle free treatment facilities to the patients. He also issued strict orders for providing free treatment facilities to the expecting mothers and infants besides to and fro transport facilities to them under JSSY. He warned for stern action against officials found neglect- ing their duties. The Minister emphasized the need for effective implemen- tation of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) flagship programme to ensure universalization of health services in rural areas of the State. Govt to regularize 1st batch of EVs as GLTs Srinagar, Oct 25: After rendering services for over seven consecutive years, the first batch comprising of over a thou- sand Education Volunteers (EVs) is all set to get regularized as General Line Teachers (GLTs) in a few days. The state government is scheduled to issue orders of regu- larization at a function that will be organized by the Direc- torate of School Education Kashmir. “Since my department will organize a function in Srinagar, I will be distributing over 1200 regularization orders of EVs turned into ReTs.” said Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand, who also holds education portfolio. KNS CRPF camp likely to be relocated from Yusmarg Srinagar, Oct 25: Authorities in the Tourism department are likely to make necessary arrangements for relocation of a CRPF camp at Yusmarg. Officials of the department have been expressing concern that the presence of troops at the tourist spot is causing inconvenience to the visitors. Sources said the Yusmarg Developmental Authority has taken the step so that people visiting the place don’t feel ‘insecure’.

Srinagar, Oct 25: In view of high magnitude of low vision among children in Jammu and Kashmir as compared to national prevalence of 1.05 percent, experts on Friday underscored the need to check various ophthalmo-logical disorders.
