Preface

Marketing research can essentially be broken down into two distinct words-

Marketing and Research. Marketing is essentially a sum total of two entities, the

target market and the marketing mix. Research is an activity of solving problem. The

marketing research process is a set of operations which aids the researcher in the

systematic gathering and analysis of data to help solve decision making problem. The

process provides the researcher with an orderly means to investigate problems.

Marketing research specifies the information required to address these, design

the method for collecting information manages and implement the data collection

process analysis the result and communicate the finding and their implication. We

tried our level best to conduct a research to gain through knowledge about the

market our topic was “Anti Ragging Rules, Justified”. We have put our best effort

into this research to gain the accurate data. if any error or mistake found in collecting

data kindly ignore.

I particularly owe my gratitude to Dr. D. K. Garg (Chairman of Ishan

Institute of Management & Technology), and Mr. M. K. Verma (Dean of Ishan

Institute of Management & Technology).

I also take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to our guide Mr.

Chapter 1

Introduction of topic:

India is badly effected of ragging, a form of abuse on newcomers to

educational institutions. The increasing privatization of higher education has leaded

the academic institutions in India to experience an increasing number of ragging-

related incidents.

In many colleges, like IIT Bombay and IIT Hyderabad ragging has been

strictly banned. However, this ban has not been very effective, as seen by the number

of ragging cases still reported by the media. Ragging involves gross violations of

basic human rights.

Several Indian states have made legislatures banning ragging, and the

Supreme Court of India has taken a strong stand to curb ragging. Ragging has been

declared a criminal offence. According to the observations by the Dr. Raghavan

Committee, which has been constructed by the Union Human Resource

Development ministry on the orders of the Supreme Court of India, the medical

colleges are the worst affected in India.

Strict legislation against ragging could finally come into force. The University

Grant Commission (UGC) has issued new guidelines against ragging in colleges

across the country.

Under these guidelines, students caught ragging will have to pay a penalty of

up to two and a half lakh rupees and will be suspended immediately. They could

even be expelled.

Page 11: MR Project Report on Anti ragging rules

MARKETING RESEARCH PROJECT Page 11

Review of literature:

The scum of ragging has not left our literature untouched too. Who can forget

the initial description of ragging - a bottle of cold drink and three nude freshers - in

the book Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat, A search on the internet or in any

encyclopedia will reveal limitless other ways that the "raggers" use to satisfy their

hungry ego. But if this aggression has become so big that we have started getting the

shocking news that a precious human life has been lost due to the menace of ragging,

it means that the things are crossing the limits, the water has risen above the nose

and we have to act now and control the situation at this moment. The death of a

medical student, Aman Kachroo, at medical college, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh,

stirred the conscience of the entire nation. It still sends chills in one′s spine whenever

the topic of ragging comes up. Now, at present, as a person from the field of public

health, I think of ragging not only as a personal issue, an issue related to a particular

person, but as a social problem with the questions and answers both lying with the

society.

A report in 2008 by the Indian anti-ragging group Coalition to Uproot

Ragging from Education (CURE) analyzed 64 ragging complaints and found that

over 60% of these were related to physical ragging, and 20% were sexual in nature.

These facts and figures are nothing but the reflection of a large picture wherein the

downtrodden people are always oppressed by the mighty ones, and academic

institutions are not an exception to this rule.

Research objective:

The research study tends to follow and achieve specific objectives.

The objectives of this particular study are:-

To know the knowledge of anti ragging rules in students

Main cause of ragging in institutes

College that is most prominent by ragging

To know the awareness of anti ragging rules in students and parents

Role of government and administration to prevent ragging

Outcome of ragging

To know the necessity of anti ragging rule in colleges

Role of college authority to prevent ragging in colleges

Research methodology:

Marketing Research:

Marketing is the function which links the consumer, customer and public to the

marketer through information used to identify and define marketing opportunities

and problems generate, refine evaluate marketing actions, monitor marketing

performances, and improve understanding of marketing as process.

Research Design:

Research design is a frame work or a blue print for conducting the marketing

research project. It specifies details that are necessary for obtaining the information

needed to structure and/or solve marketing research problem. It is helpful to classify

marketing research project‟s on the basis of fundamental objectives of the research,

consideration of the different types, their applicability, their strength and weakness

that will help the researcher to select the best suited specific problem.

There are two types of research design:

Exploratory research design

Conclusive research design

Exploratory research design: It is an informal way of research. It provides

insights information and understanding of the research. Exploratory research could

be used for any of the following purpose i.e. Formulate the problem, define the

problem in more precise way, to develop hypothesis, establish priorities for further

research.

In exploratory research we generally used case analysis, secondary data and

qualitative research techniques.

Page 14: MR Project Report on Anti ragging rules

MARKETING RESEARCH PROJECT Page 14

Conclusive research design: It is a formal way of research. It is a well define

research design because it is used as input in decision making. In conclusive research

design mostly used methods are observation technique, experimentation, survey

technique. Conclusive Research provides information that helps the executives make

a rational decision.

Conclusive research design can be further classified in experimental research

design/causal research design and descriptive research design.

Data collection:

There are two methods of collecting data:

Primary data

Secondary data

Primary data: Primary data originated by researcher for specific purpose.

The collection of primary data involves all the six steps of the marketing research

process. Obtaining primary data can be expensive and time consuming. Survey,

observation and questionnaire are the methods of collecting primary data.

Secondary data: Secondary data are the data that have already collected for

purpose other than the problem at hand. These data can be collected quickly and

inexpensively. Secondary data are generally used for exploratory research design so

that the research objective can defined easily.

Page 15: MR Project Report on Anti ragging rules

MARKETING RESEARCH PROJECT Page 15

Sampling:

The sampling design process is as follows:

1. The collection of elements or objects that possess the information sought by

the researcher and about which inferences are to be made.

2. A representation of the elements of the population. It consists of a list or set of

directions for identifying the target population.

3. Selecting a sampling technique involves several decisions of a broader nature.

4. It refers to the number of elements to be included in the study.

5. In this process requires a detailed specification of how the sampling design

decisions with respect to the population, sampling frame, sampling unit,

sampling technique and sample size are to be implemented.

1. Define the target population

2. Determine the sampling frame

3. Select a sampling technique

4. Determine the sample size

5. Execute the sampling process

Interpretation: India is badly effected of ragging, a form of abuse on newcomers

to educational institutions. The increasing privatization of higher education has leaded the

academic institutions in India to experience an increasing number of ragging-related

incidents. Though ragging has ruined the lives of many, resistance against it has grown

up only recently. Several Indian states have made legislatures banning ragging, and the

Supreme Court of India has taken a strong stand to curb ragging. Ragging has been

declared a criminal offence and to reduce this kind of offence there is a requirement of

strict rules to prevent it. As most of respondent has realized it and give their result that

yes there is an urgent need of anti ragging rules. There are many suicide cases of ragging

has found in across India if we will not stop it now then our future become worst because

students are the future of the country and it become a responsibility of every parents that

they should give right instruction to their children.

Table 4.2

Option Percentage Frequency

Yes 54% 27

No 42% 21

Interpretation: Many respondents have given their answer that yes, because they

think, students come from different cities across India to study it different colleges and

parents allow them on the belief of the college and it become responsibility of institutes

to take care of them and in this situation if any ragging cases are found then it should be

solved by the college itself, but some time we find ragging cases of sexual harassments

that will not be bear by any college and parents themselves, in this cases interruption of

external factors like police is also require because here it become an offence that cannot

be handled by college itself these kind of cases mostly find in universities, but now-a-

days ragging has become hard to handle by college itself in this case they take the help of

police administration, but it should not take as a negative thing because it will indirectly

help the students. If college authority makes a discipline, strict rule in hostel & campus to

prevent ragging then cases of ragging can be reduced. Ragging always does not give bad

impact on the juniors but it also groom the personality and build a good relationship

between junior and senior students.

Table 4.3

Option Percentage Frequency

Yes 72% 36

No 24% 12

Interpretation: There are many rules defined by University Grant Commission

(UGC) for ragging cases. UGC has also setup a national call centre to log complaints

regarding ragging cases. There is also different kind of organization those who work to

stop ragging like, Coalition to Uproot Ragging from Education (CURE), Society against

Violence in Education (SAVE). But few of students aware with these rules and these

organizations, and when cases of ragging occur then they don’t know how to get resolved

from it, to which authority they should complain and a kind of hesitation also come in

mind of the students and this also become a factor in increase ragging cases. But if

government is making any kind of law or rules then first task should be aware the people

with these rules and regulation, if people will not know these things then there is no role

of making these kinds of rules and it becomes useless. That’s why more than 70%

respondents think that lack of awareness of anti ragging rules among students and parents

it is not effective.

Table 4.4

Option Percentage Frequency

Yes 54% 27

No 42% 21

Interpretation: If we talk about interference of police in ragging cases then it

depend upon ragging cases, because no one institutes want to make a bad image of the

institutes, if any case is found in college then it shows the indiscipline of the institutes,

and students themselves those who have face the problem of ragging also will not want

the interference of police. But ‘excess of everything is bad’, means if ragging has become

excess then only institutes should take the help of police because, cases of suicide, sexual

harassment etc due to ragging cannot be solved by college itself that’s why 42%

respondents also told that interference of police is require in cases of extreme ragging.

Those colleges which are most effected by ragging like medical and engineering colleges

they should take the help of police and administration but up to an extent. Institutes itself

should take the first step to resolve the case. Interference of police in any case of ragging

should not be the primary task for the institutes because in can crush the career of the

students. Institutes should make the strict rules and discipline also they should make a

security system in hostel as well as campus.

Interpretation: With the situation of ragging worsening yearly, there is emerging

a spontaneous anti-ragging movement in India. Several voluntary organizations have

emerged, who conduct drives for public awareness and arrange for support to victims.

Online groups like Coalition to Uproot Ragging from India (CURE), Stop ragging,

No Ragging Foundation became the major Anti Ragging groups on the Internet. Among

them, the No Ragging Foundation has transformed into a complete NGO and got

registered as Society against Violence in Education (SAVE) which is India's first

registered Anti Ragging nonprofit organization (NGO). These groups are working on

issues related to ragging. Each of them is running anti ragging websites and online

groups.

The Indian media also has been playing a crucial role by exposing ragging

incidents and the indifference of many concerned institutions towards curbing the act.

The Supreme Court of India has directed, in its interim judgment that action may be taken

even against negligent institutions. So, on these criteria we can say that government

doing best to stop ragging.

Q6. According to you, what should be the best punishment for guilty person, in case

of ragging? a) Prison (32%) b) Monetary Fine (38%)

Table 4.6

Option Percentage Frequency

Prison 32% 16

Monetary Fine 38% 20

Expulsion 28% 14

Physical Punishment 0% 0

Interpretation: Punishment cannot be the resolution of any cases, sometime those

students who do the ragging they also don’t know why they are doing such things,

because they also has face this kind of situation and to expose that frustration they do the

same thing with their juniors and sometime it become a extreme case that become bad for

their career. But in the case of normal ragging in institutes mostly we find punishment for

guilty person like, to expel from the college, monetary fine etc according to rule of the

institutes. In case of ragging in Banaras Hindu University (BHU), monetary fine of Rs.

50000 for each three students has been imposed on them. But only by the punishment we

cannot stop the ragging because punishment should be like that students can realize their

mistakes but if there is a case of sexual harassment or suicide then it become a crime and

according to Indian crime law only expulsion and monetary fine cannot be the resolution

in this case there may be prison or execution.

basic human rights. The seniors are known to torture juniors and by this those seniors get

some kind of sadistic pleasures.

But in India, ragging is more infamous for its ubiquitous presence in the

educational institutions. According to the observations by the Dr. Raghavan Committee,

which has been constructed by the Union Human Resource Development ministry on the

orders of the Supreme Court of India, the medical colleges are the worst affected in India.

However, India's first and only registered Anti Ragging NGO, Society against

Violence in Education (SAVE) has supported that ragging is also widely and dangerously

prevalent in Engineering and other institutions, mainly in the hostels. But in our survey

we find that ragging is most prominent in engineering college it may be because of the

Table 4.8

(C) Can’t say 18% 09

Interpretation: One of the reasons given by students is on the following lines; as

they were ragged by their seniors, so it′s their right to rag their juniors. Another reason is

the sense of superiority. The crueler a senior is, more terrified are the juniors. It is said to

be that, ragging is a kind of culture which helps to build a good relationship between

junior and senior students. There are some fun things which will build some great rapport

between them. But what’s happening now or you can take some last 20 years, it is going

overboard. It involves physical torture, getting money from the juniors and other things

that can’t be said. Those who are the seniors in the college (not all) will think themselves

as the king of the college and wants the juniors to do all kind of respects to them. But anti

ragging rules prohibited them to do this kind of thing and as per our result also we got the

view of respondents that they also think that it change the motive of the students.

Interpretation: The ill effects of ragging include all the dimensions - right from

the physical injury through beating, hitting by objects or by forcing to perform dangerous

tasks to sexual abuse by forced stripping, forced masturbation, forced unnatural sex, etc.

The psychological effects include constant fear, loss of concentration, inferiority complex

and guilt because of decline in academic performance and feeling of insecurity arising

out of financial exploitation. Being a victim or perpetrator of school bullying, the most

common type of school violence, has been frequently associated with a broad spectrum of

behavioral, emotional and social problems. Results of a prospective study of Korean

adolescents showed that bullying independently increased suicide risks. But if we talk

about overall result then it give a psychological pressure in the mind of students and

when it become excess then cases of suicide also can seen. Ragging has reportedly

caused at least 30-31 deaths in the last 7 years. In the 2008 session, approximately 7

ragging deaths have been reported.

Interpretation: On June 2009 the Ministry of Human Resource and Development

(MHRD) and University Grants Commission (UGC) had launched the helpline wherein

students, parents and guardians can file their complaint by phone using a toll-free

number. The call centre for the helpline, run by a Dalmia group company, Caretel

Infotech in Delhi which has a 20-seater inbound centre. It gets around 1500-2000 inquiry

calls every day through the actual number of complaints registered is only one or two per

day. HRD minister Kapil Sibal said after launching the helpline, a student's single call

will immediately go to the head of his institution and the district authority. A supervising

authority, likely to be an NGO, will also get to monitor what action has been taken on a

student's complaint. "The helpline (1800-180-5522) will operate round-the-clock and

function as a watchdog. Once a student calls and registers a complaint, the process of

giving him assistance will start within 15 minutes. Overall as per the result of survey also

we find that this helpline number is giving benefit to the students.

Interpretation: Students those who come for the study from different places they

want to make a better career for themselves. But if they ragged by their seniors then the

main thing come in their mind about their future they know that if they will make any

complain regarding this it can create a bad impact on them. That’s why most of the

students do not complaint regarding this and in extreme case it becomes a result of

suicide and mentally disturbance. There are lots of cases of ragging that cannot be

expressed then how they can make complaint for it. As per the result of survey also we

find that most of the respondents say yes it happens and 70% respondents agree with this.

But I think it should not be because it they will not complain for it then how the concern

authority will know about such cases and it become difficult for them to stop ragging.

To remove this drawback, college authority should make such kind of complain

system so that it remains confidential and also guilty person has punished for it. Then

students will not hesitate on making complaints and ragging can be easily removed.

Interpretation: As per the survey result we find that it happens. College

authority, UGC and other anti ragging organizations are doing their best to remove

ragging. But provisions like putting a compliant box or expecting the fresher to report the

incident to anti ragging cell/committee don’t work because such provisions fail to

convince the fresher of complete anonymity and his /her safety.

The best way to tackle this problem is by making it mandatory for every college in

the country to do a weekly/fortnightly anonymous survey of the entire first year batch to

find out if any sort of ragging is taking place in their college. The idea is to encourage the

students by approaching the entire batch and maintaining absolute anonymity rather than

waiting for a whistle blower to come forward and report the incident. Unless we make

this important provision, the college authorities will continue to live in oblivion and feel

that ragging is not a problem in their institution, if these things followed by institutes then

ragging can be reduced.

Interpretation: The saying ‘Students are the future of the nation and society’ has

now become outdated. People now accept that they are the present. Demographics also

go in their favour. Youth account for almost half of India. And the ratio of the youth and

students will continue to grow as per the trends available for next few decades. We need

to groom and promote the students and motivate and support them to perform their best

for themselves as well as the society and imbibe good moral values. It is very unfortunate

that despite this knowledge, we fail to protect them from violence. Incidents like violent

ragging by seniors, fights among students, sometimes even leading to murders make the

situation worse. This instils a feeling of anger and revenge. This insensitivity degenerates

and they behave violently with anyone who comes in their way and stop respecting their

teachers and parents. In developed countries, the rights of the children and students are

taken care by the law. India too has laws for punishing those perpetrating violence

against students. So in case of ragging also there should be a special law/committee to

handle ragging cases.

Interpretation: We must know the origin and purpose of ragging. Ragging came

into the existence for the foremost purpose of interaction. It is tool of interaction and co-

operation between juniors and seniors. But we know because of misuse of this tool it

become an offence.

There is tremendous fear in the minds of the freshers and huge possibility of

backlash because of which the fresher decides to tolerate ragging and as a result almost

99.99% of the ragging cases go unreported and problem remains suppressed. When

students take admission in the college then they have a kind of phobia with the seniors,

due to this they do not personally interact with them. Respect and fear both are different

things, now juniors respect the senior due to fear but that should not be. I think juniors as

well as seniors both should personally interact with them. By this we can remove ragging

and conflict between them.

Interpretation: It is said to be that, ragging is a kind of culture which helps to

build a good relationship between junior and senior students. Many lives have been lost

due to the ragging. The reason behind it is ragging, a culture which is being followed in

many a colleges by the senior students. It’s happening everywhere in this country. But it

seems like, it has been happening more in engineering and medical colleges. That’s how

it is getting interpreted. Though ragging has been banned but since the time it has been

banned there is an atmosphere of confusion prevailing in the campus. Perhaps that is why

several students still believe that this ban has been unnecessarily imposed on them.

Ragging means not physically torture but it should be a kind of interaction and co-

operation between juniors and seniors. If ragging will consider with this concept then

there is no need to ban ragging. Because many students think that ragging is a kind of

interaction, that’s why more than 55% respondents have given their answer in favour of

this. So, I can say that ragging can be reduced but cannot be stopped.

Chapter 5

Finding:

During the course of marketing research I found that some people are very co-

operative but some of them were not interested in filling the questionnaire. Despite

these types of obstacles I tried to our level best to do the survey and learn a lot by this

type of survey. I find mostly engineer student they say that ragging is mostly seen in

universities and medical colleges, management colleges is an area were ragging

rarely seen.

Suggestions and recommendations:

The saying „Students are the future of the nation and society‟ has now become

outdated. People now accept that they are the present. Demographics also go in their

favour. Youth account for almost half of India. And the ratio of the youth and

students will continue to grow as per the trends available for next few decades. We

need to groom and promote the students and motivate and support them to perform

their best for themselves as well as the society and imbibe good moral values. It is

very unfortunate that despite this knowledge, we fail to protect them from violence.

To reduce ragging I think every institute will constitute an anti-ragging body

which will have representatives from school authorities, local police and local media.

The Indian media has been playing a crucial role by exposing ragging

incidents and the indifference of many concerned institutions towards curbing the

act. The Supreme Court of India has directed, in its interim judgment that action

may be taken even against negligent institutions.

Page 36: MR Project Report on Anti ragging rules

MARKETING RESEARCH PROJECT Page 36

Conclusion:

After doing marketing research, we reached following conclusion:

Ragging is most prominent in engineering colleges.

Anti ragging rules are effecting the interaction and co-operation among the

students.

Most of the people think that there should be a special law for ragging cases.

Lack of complaints to concerned authority is also a reason to increment in

ragging cases suicide is the most outcome of ragging.

Lack of awareness among parents and students, anti ragging rules are not

effective.

Monetary fine is the best punishment for guilty person in case of ragging.

People think that ragging cases should be solved by college authority only but

in extreme cases interference of Police is also require.

Limitations:

Many respondents were not interested in filling the questionnaire.

Because most of the respondents were engineering background so they

preferred that ragging is most prominent in engineering college but

actually according to a survey medical college is most affected by

ragging

Personal Experience

As per the research title, our respondents were students. To start my research

first I have made an attractive questionnaire, here attractive means well organized

with sequence, order and phrasing of the questions because these entire thing show

the interest of the respondents otherwise it become.

We know that if we will go any college or university then we can find

respondents easily but to interact different types of respondents we went to Atta

Market, we were think that here we will easily get the respondents but people in Atta

Market were too busy, there main thing was to convince them, after some struggle

we find about 15 respondents. But we think that filling of the questionnaire should

not be force fully so for the next day we decided to go in Institutes.

On the second day we have visited in different colleges in Knowledge Park at

Greater Noida. Here we find that they were interested in filling the questionnaire

with his/her willingness, other than the questionnaire respondents has also given

their opinion about ragging cases and his experience also.

So overall these two days I have expended to interact with the respondent and

we find that main thing in market is to convince the customer and here respondent

were as a customer for our marketing research. This marketing research helped us to

improve our communication skill, and also we find that target market is most

important before doing any marketing.
