Message from Administration

Another month has come and gone at Monsignor Doyle. We continue to put our faith into action and this month we did this by bringing in over 1913 kg or 4217 lbs of food over four days during the Veteran’s Food Drive. What a difference this community makes to those in need!  

We celebrated our last day before Lent begins on Shrove Tuesday and will humbly start our faith journey during Lent on Ash Wednesday. Thank you to all our volunteers who helped dish out the pancakes and a special thank you to our Knights of Columbus from St. Peter’s church who brought grills and chefs who flipped pancakes from 7:00 am until all were fed. Our Ash Wednesday liturgy will be March 1st at 1:30 pm, led by our grade 4 classes. You are invited to join us.  

We are looking forward to seeing many of you at our Parent Teacher Conferences on Wednesday March 15th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm or Thursday March 16th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Appointments will be made online and instructions will be included in your child’s Progress Report along with their ID number.

MONSIGNOR DOYLE School Community shows Mercy!!  The 8th Annual Veterans Food Drive was a huge success again this year. This year we decided to measure by weight to get more useable food items for our veterans. Monsignor Doyle School brought in 1913 kg of food and St. Vincent de Paul School collected 889 kg at their school. Both schools embraced the challenge and for the 8th year in a row and the results were out of this world!! In total Monsignor Doyle and St. Vincent contributed in excess of 2802 kg of food to our veterans! 

We will be acknowledging the efforts of all students with a special assembly here at Monsignor Doyle with Mr. Dan Farrell, the principal of St. Vincent de Paul School.  

Our grade 5 students have been participating in a service project this week by helping to sort the donated items at the Veteran’s Food Band. 

As always we would like to thank our ongoing sponsors, Brite Signs, Boston Pizza Crowfoot, and of course our military friends from The Kings Own Calgary Regiment for spending the day with us and sharing their military knowledge and assistance! 

Thank you also to all of you for helping to improve the lives of our veterans and their families! It truly was a wonderful display of community social justice and a ‘coming together’ for both Monsignor Doyle and St. Vincent de Paul schools! 

   

  

 We have been connecting with the students in our school and we 

will continue to connect daily. Students connect not only to their classroom teacher but our support staff and other staff members as well. In February, we talked to the students about choosing a champion. We explained “What is a Champion?” – Someone who is there to talk to, an 

individual to share good news with, and an adult who is there to help you and support you. These people appreciate who you are as a unique creation of God. Jesus is our ultimate teacher of life and his stories teach us how to live the right way. He is the best hero and champion God has given us. We will have various activities throughout the year to facilitate our champions connecting with each other.

We have a great group of students from grade 3‐6 who have been watching out for students who need a little help playing at recess and at lunch. Our Play Leader Peace Patrol team is a voluntary group of students who lead activities outside at recess and lunch. They have a bin of equipment they use to provide various activities outside for anyone who needs someone to play with. If anyone has any ideas of good recess games or if you have outside sports equipment you would like to donate to the Play Leaders Peace Patrols, please contact the office.  

   

    

Progress Reports go home on Friday, March 10th, so please check your child’s backpack that afternoon! 

Parent teacher Interviews will be on Wednesday, March 15th from 4:00–7:00 pm, and all day on Thursday, March 16th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, and again from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. There are NO CLASSES all day on Thursday March 16th as a result.   

Friday, March 17th is a professional development day for staff so there will be no classes for students that day either.       

Our grade 2 to grade 5 classes went to a special Be Brave Hitmen game on Wednesday February 22nd at the Saddledome. We filled two sections and were seated in the Chrysler club seats. The students participated in a flash mob dance to Sara Bareille’s song “Brave” and listened to Stampeders alumnus Randy Chevrier and Team Canada Ice Hockey Olympian Carolyn Quellette share their stories of each overcoming bullying when they were growing up.

 Another highlight of the game was Megan Young from 6E was chosen to be a student organist for the game. We sent in an audition video and she was chosen to play the organ for the game. We were so proud of her when she was introduced.  

The Calgary Hitmen won the game in a shootout.  We will continue to be brave for each other and stand up to bullying. 

              

The school dance was a Jammin’ good time! School Council would like to extend a huge thank you to all involved in putting on a fabulous school dance!! With Disco Dan, silent auction items, photo booths and the candy one couldn’t help but have a great time! 

A special thank you to Amy Solomon (Enlighten Decor and Design) for helping us decorate; Bridget Nielsen (Photography by Bridget Nielsen) for spending the evening taking fun shots at the photo booth; Shelly and Allan Dedrick for running and contributing greatly to the Silent Auction; all the families who donated items for the Silent Auction; the parents and students who volunteered their time and effort; and all the Monsignor Doyle families who danced the evening away with us! 

Thank you again for helping to make our school great!   The next School Council meeting will be at Wednesday, March 8th at 6:30 pm. Please consider coming to the meeting to be engaged in your child(ren)’s school and become aware of all that goes on.

The Sacraments are alive and well at St. Peter’s! FIRST COMMUNION 2017 

Registration has been great so far!               DON’T DELAY….. Deadline for Registration is March 3!  Online registration is available at: www.st‐peters.ca At time of registration you are asked to provide a copy of your child’s 

baptismal certificate and the requested $25.00 registration fee. Cash or cheque please! For questions or more information contact sacraments@st‐peters.ca     

 Every Friday is pick up day if you have any returnable cartons, bottles 

or cans you would like to contribute to the school for the Learning Commons. Please leave your bags by the green bins near the parking lot. We thank Shelley, Becky, Derek and Paul who take the items to the depot. So far this year we have collected $896.00! 

    

  

We hosted the annual Knights of Columbus Basketball free throw completion early in February and many of our students enjoyed shooting hoops. Congratulations to these students who participated: Parker Bryant, Connor Braaten, Lorelei Rennie, Ethan Wong, Timber Healey, Gavin Tilley, Roman Maudie, Bryce Delay, Noah Kisser, and Douglas Gibson.  

We would also like to congratulate our age group winners: Liam Delay, Hala Salah, Miles Thompson, Vanessa Cruz, and Bennett Anderson.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION 2017‐2018 ONGOING! 

 All Calgary Catholic School District elementary 

schools offer a kindergarten program. Depending on total kindergarten enrolment, schools may offer a choice of morning or afternoon classes on a first‐come, first‐served basis.  

A child who turns four years old on or before March 1st is eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall of that same calendar year. For example, this means to register for kindergarten next September (2017), a child must turn four years old on or before this coming March 1st, 2017. Your child’s birth certificate is required at the time of registration.

School Memo re: Mumps To: Students, Parents and Staff of Alberta Schools From the Alberta Medical Officers of Health Date: 2017-Feb-21 Outbreaks of mumps in Manitoba and the United States in the past several months are a reminder that vaccine-preventable infections, including mumps, are still a risk to health, including here in Alberta. To reduce the risk to your child, and our communities, we need to ensure as many Albertans as possible are up to date with their mumps immunization. This includes yourself, and your children. Mumps is a contagious viral infection that can often cause swelling and pain in the jaw (one or both cheeks may look swollen). Some people with mumps won't have gland swelling, and some may feel like they have a bad cold or influenza instead. Mumps is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes near you or shares food or drinks with you. A person with mumps can spread the virus seven days before and for nine days after symptoms start, though it is most likely to spread the virus one to two days before and five days after symptoms start showing. Although mumps usually goes away on its own in about 10 days, in some cases, it can cause serious complications that affect the brain (meningitis), the testicles (orchitis), the ovaries (oophoritis), or the pancreas (pancreatitis). These complications can have life-long effects. Mumps can be prevented through immunization (vaccine). The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine, and the MMRV (measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella [chickenpox]) vaccine, both protect against mumps. Most children get these vaccines as part of their routine childhood shots. The first dose is given at age one, and a second dose at age four. The vaccine is safe, and is also effective. Before the mumps vaccine existed, mumps was a common childhood disease in Canada and the United States. Protect yourself, and your children: 1. Check your own and your children’s immunization records to be sure that you and your children are up to

date on your vaccines. Call Health Link (811) if you are unsure how to find or check your immunization records, and/or to learn how to make an appointment for immunization. Mumps-specific recommendations include: • Children should receive one dose of vaccine at 12 months of age, and a second dose between four

years and six years of age. By the age of six, all Albertan children should have received two doses of mumps-containing vaccine.

• Adults (18 years of age and older) and born in 1970 or later should have at least one dose of mumps-containing vaccine. (Note: two doses are recommended for post-secondary students of this age and for all healthcare workers)

• Those born before 1970 are assumed to be immune due to the fact that mumps was extremely common prior to vaccine being available. (Note: one dose is recommended for post-secondary students of this age; two doses are recommended for all healthcare workers).

2. Anyone with symptoms of pain on chewing or swallowing and/or swelling of the cheek or jaw should call Health Link (811) or a doctor to book an assessment and consideration of testing. If you think that you or your child has mumps, be sure to call ahead and explain the symptoms before you go to a doctor's office.

3. Anyone with symptoms as above should stay home from school/work for 5 days from the start of swelling.

4. To prevent spreading infections, always: • Practice good hand hygiene – wash hands often with soap and water, or use alcohol hand rub.

• Avoid sharing items that could be contaminated with saliva, such as water bottles, drinking glasses, utensils, etc.

• Clean and disinfect surfaces that are touched often (e.g. door handles). • Cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or a forearm, not your hand.

District Day with the Calgary Hitmen

Thank you to everyone who attended our District Day on January 27, 2017! It was wonderful to see so many members of the Calgary Catholic community come together and celebrate. We want to give a special thanks to the record number of school mascots, the face-painters from St. Isabella, the band from Our Lady Queen of Peace providing pre-game entertainment, the Hockey Canada Skills Acad-emy students displaying their talents, students from St. Francis High School who helped sell 50/50 tickets and of course, our Calgary Hitmen partners. Thanks to your support, over $10,000 was raised for the Calgary Catholic Education Foundation, which will go towards enhanced opportunities, equip-ment and experiences for our students. Summer School 2017

Calgary Catholic School District offers high school courses during the summer to any student born after September 1, 1996, including students completing Grade 9 in June 2017. Students can take up to eight credits in Summer School that can include one direct-instruction course and/or a combination of online courses. Students completing Grade 9 in June 2017 are eligible to take most high school courses (except Religious Education 15). Five-credit courses run from July 4 – July 28, 2017 and three-credit courses run from July 4 – July 19, 2017. CAREERFair: RAP and Skilled Trades

Students and parents/guardians are invited to attend one of the annual CAREERfairs to connect with employers and industry. Ask questions about the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) and Skilled Trades. Calgary Catholic Education Foundation Fundraiser with Steve Bell

Steve Bell, a well-known Christian musician, will perform a concert on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (10827 - 24 Street SW) in support of the Calgary Catholic Education Foundation (CCEF).
