Launched in 2003, Monna Lisa is the first industrial digital textile printer that has opened a new era in fabric printing. With the Monna Lisa series, Epson offered a digital printing solution which has allowed the textile market to shift from the pioneering phase of sampling to reliable mass production.

Today, after more than 15 years, the new generation of Monna Lisa Evo Tre, the first featuring the latest evolution of Epson PrecisionCore print head, comprehends a wide range of models characterized by the print quality, versatility and reliability that have made Monna Lisa one of the leading solutions for high quality printing in the textile market.

Both printing companies in the Como textile district, the first who introduced digital technology in their printing processes, and other innovative companies from the textile market have benefited from the performances of the Monna Lisa series, confirming Epson as a reference standard for quality and productivity in the textile market.

In the following pages you can discover their experience and stories of excellence.

Mantero Seta chose Monna Lisa printers to step into the field of digital printing in 2014. With Monna Lisa Evo Tre, the latest version of the digital printer series that has made history in high quality textile printing, Mantero Seta continues to combine tradition with innovation.

Mantero Seta was established in the early 1900s. From the beginning it was considered a byword for unquestioned quality in the high-end silk market for clothing and accessories. Originally the company was merely a warehouse for high quality textiles. It then became a trading company, and only later turned into industrial enterprise engaged in printing, dyeing and weaving silk. The quality and prestige of Mantero Seta fabrics began to gain a reputation beyond the environs of Como, even reaching the main international fashion houses. It was during this phase that Mantero Seta began to grow. A permanent policy of the company is to protect the ownership of the designs and fabrics produced for its long-standing and ready-to-wear clientele.

The Company

In the 1990s, the wish to be a groundbreaking company and the need to meet the stylistic demands of the moment led the dyeing and print house to add to its traditional classic systems, such as screen printing and roller printing, the more innovative digital printing systems.Mantero was looking for a way to range from designs with large masses and a wide selection of colours to the micro-designs of neckwear and accessories where small details drive the printing process. The accessories market has a tendency to consider the front as important as the back. Consequently, colour penetration into fabrics is of the utmost importance, especially to prevent the design from becoming blurred.

After some thorough research, Mantero chose Epson’s Monna Lisa printer, not just for its high quality but also for its extensive versatility, a feature that makes it far different from other printers and makes it possible to reproduce stylistic variants with absolute reliability.

“For us, digital printing stands for Monna Lisa. As far as we are concerned, the winning features of Monna Lisa have always been the quality and reproducibility of a print, in addition to its reliability and ability to cope with large production volumes.”

The Monna Lisa Evo Tre 32, developed by Epson and Fratelli Robustelli, combines the high quality standards required by the haute couture fashion sector with the productivity demanded by the frantic pace of the current fashion market. The innovative proprietary Epson PrecisionCore printing technology, incorporated for the first time in the Monna Lisa Evo Tre series, enables printers to combine unmatched quality and

high productivity with even greater reliability. These features make the printer one of the most versatile digital textile printers on the market. One of the most important qualities of Monna Lisa Evo Tre is its flexibility. It provides users with a single printer to meet a variety of different production needs. It can print on any type of fabric, from the simplest to the most complex designs, with speed and perfect repeatability.

With Monna Lisa, Mantero has combined tradition and innovation, maintaining the high quality for which the brand is internationally renowned.

“For us digital printing means Monna Lisa. According to us, the winning features of Monna Lisa have always been the quality and reproducibility of a print, in addition to its reliability and ability to cope with large production volumes,” says Franco Mantero, CEO at Mantero Seta.

“We print 120,000 metres of fabrics per month. Each Monna Lisa machine produces on average 18,000-25,000 m per month. Six Monna Lisa printers have been installed at Mantero’s Digital Printing Department, which was established five years ago: two Monna Lisa ML

in 2014, two Monna Lisa Evo Tre in 2015 and the latest two Monna Lisa Evo Tre in 2018,” says Antonio Rezzonico, Production Director at Mantero Seta.

The core points of the company’s offer are the designs of Mantero’s Style and Design Department with its about 100 employees, and the historic archive. Digital printing, which has become considerably important for Mantero, has provided the company with an excellent means to convey these strengths.

“The Mantero 1902 collection is the stylistic expression of designs from our archives and of the new colour variants produced by our designers and digitally printed by Monna Lisa.” Mantero concludes: “The combination of these elements continues to produce remarkable results.”

Monna Lisa Evo Tre was adopted for the GreenDrop project, developed by one of the largest businesses in the Como textile districtto create increasingly sustainable products.

While an increasing number of companies is exploring digital textile printing, Creazioni Digitali is currently one of the largest businesses in the Como district operating in this field. Expert in digital sublimation printing for the clothing and furnishing sector, the company stands out for its impressive production capacity and its strong focus on innovation, research and development. Founded in 2006 in Como, in 2012 the company relocated to a new 6000 sqm headquarter in Lurate Caccivio (CO). The new location is now entirely dedicated to digital printing and to the development of exclusive designs and variants specifically created according to customer requirements. Thanks to its close collaboration with high-profile partners, Creazioni Digitali has become a key supplier for many important customers over the years. It currently has 38 employees and a turnover of around 6 million euros and its annual production in 2018 exceeded over 2,5 million metres.

The Company

In 2017 Creazioni Digitali presented GreenDrop, an innovative printing process which uses sustainable dyes. It enables to print on fabrics consisting of various compositions of fibre mixture used in the textile industry and elsewhere. Based on the use of pigments, this technology no longer employs the classic fabric steaming and washing processes. Compared with traditional processes, it reduces water consumption to a minimum (around 1/3) and produces lower CO2 emissions. The result: economic value, versatility, waste reduced to a minimum and truly sustainable products. This was the backdrop for the Epson Monna Lisa introduction in Creazioni Digitali in 2019 in order to pursue the company’s ambitious project focused on the sustainability of all production

processes. Creazioni Digitali decided to create a dedicated team and to introduce in its R&D labs the Epson digital textile printer par excellence - developed together with F.lli Robustelli. Monna Lisa has been chosen with the goal of entering new markets with pigment printing thanks to its reliability and the high quality of its prints.

“The sustainability of the textile supply chain is an increasingly crucial issue for both consumers and operators. We are very happy to have found in Epson the ideal partner for this project, which is not just a printing style but a whole new way of conceptualising the product.”

Characterized by the innovative proprietary Epson PrecisionCore printing technology – integrated for the first time in the Monna Lisa Evo Tre series –, Monna Lisa Evo Tre 16 is a highly versatile industrial digital printer thanks also to the use of different inks depending on fabrics and markets in which it is used. Quality, unparalleled flexibility and total reliability of this printer make it unique and enable it to meet the most diverse production requirements. All this without forgetting the importance of the sustainability theme in modern society,

a goal Epson has pursued wholeheartedly for some time. In fact, its Total Solution is part of continuous research for minimum environmental impact through practices such as eco-design and chemical certifications. The entire range of Genesta inks, developed by Epson in partnership with For.Tex, not only offer quality, precise and colour-resistant printing on all types of fabrics, but they are also approved by OEKO-TEX® with ECOPASSPORT certification. Their high reliability reduces head cleaning cycles and drastically limits consumption.

Creazioni Digitali is committed to a more and more sustainable printing and its results and performances in this field have been excellent so far. The company launched the production phase a few months ago and is very happy with its partnership with Epson, particularly given the important contribution of Monna Lisa to the GreenDrop project, which has been developed to make all phases of digital printing production processes more sustainable.

“For us, the sustainability of production processes is a must. We have been working in this direction for some time and we firmly believe in GreenDrop printing, which we commonly define as SmartWater Digital Style because of its excellent sustainability properties”, comments Roberto Lucini, CEO at Creazioni Digitali.

“The sustainability of the textile supply chain is an increasingly crucial issue for both consumers and operators. We are very happy to have found in Epson the ideal partner for this project, which is not just a printing style but a whole new way of conceptualising the product. We believe that this is the right time to invest in sustainable processes and in the development of innovative technological solutions that prioritise respect for the environment together with economic, social and institutional sustainability.”

As for the partnership with Epson, he concludes: “At the moment, given the innovation of the process, we are confident that, thanks to the precious help of Epson and a high-quality printer like Monna Lisa, our concept of ‘sustainable development’ is able to satisfy the needs of the modern society without compromising those of the future generations.”

Swimwear and sportswear acquire a new brilliance with Epson’s Genesta fluorescent Monna Lisa Evo Tre inks.

Founded in 1974 in the heart of the Como textile district, Lico Print initially established itself in the traditional fabric printing sector, especially silk, for clothing and accessories (scarves and ties). In the 1980s, with the increased use of fibres like LYCRA, Lico Print combined its classic processes with those used on stretch fabrics and became a specialist in swimwear and sportswear, which are today the only two reference product sectors.During its 45 years of activity, the company has moved from traditional hand, flat screen-printing to square flat screen-printing and rotary printing machines and then to digital printing at the turn of the millennium.

The Company

To reduce the high fixed plant and processing costs imposed by traditional printing, Lico Print embraced digital printing, which became a must. With this innovative approach, costs are linked only to image processing, which is immediately available for printing. This means greater flexibility and higher performance speed.Furthermore, the average swimwear order is quite small. This means a greater division of work than other accessories like scarves, where an average of a square metre of fabric is used per piece. This combination of several requirements drove Lico Print to choose digital printing: work division, fixed cost savings, sampling speed and design processing suitable for swim and sportswear.Initially, Lico Print entered the world

of digital printing with solutions that offered limited performance but fitted within its existing production. This was enough while digital printing was a small part of the company business. However, when the Como printing company decided to focus more on industrial production, Epson was the only possible way forward. In 2009 Lico Print introduced its first Monna Lisa, a printer which is widely recognised for its reliability and high printing performance.

“We adopted the first Monna Lisa to extend the fleet of our machines and provide an alternative to our existing solutions. After the successful experiment, it came naturally to keep choosing Epson-Robustelli.”

Lico Print exclusively uses Epson solutions. It has five printers - two Monna Lisa Evo Tre 32, two Monna Lisa Evo Tre 16 and a Monna Lisa Evo Tre 32 16 channels, the latest evolution of the series developed by Epson in partnership with F.lli Robustelli.Monna Lisa Evo Tre 32 16 channels offers a colour range that comes increasingly close to what is being provided by traditional printing. The latest addition to the Monna Lisa range is the first digital printer to contain up to 16 different Genesta

Acid sacks in an external rack. This allows the printer to use a wide range of colours, including special colours and custom treatments.Monna Lisa Evo Tre 32 16 channels allows the use of Genesta Fluorescent inks with traditional Genesta Acids inks. Genesta Fluorescent inks gave a unique colour imprint to the Lico Print production. The result is an extended colour range that improves the final product solidity and quality.

Reliability, productivity and repeatability of prints led Lico Print to choose Epson without hesitation. With Genesta Fluorescent inks, Monna Lisa Evo Tre 32 16 channels offers a wider colour configuration than previous models and allows brighter prints which match the most demanding customer requests. This is essential for a company like Lico Print, which prints swimwear and sportswear and is always looking for intense, high-impact colours.

Lico Print CEO, Mauro Livio, said: “We adopted the first Monna Lisa to extend the fleet of our machines and provide an alternative to our existing solutions. After the successful experiment, it came naturally to keep choosing Epson-Robustelli. Our production is equally divided between traditional and digital, but

digital accounts for 60 per cent of turnover. Out of 1.6 million metres of fabric printed annually, 800-900,000 are digitally printed. Counting on reliable and versatile solutions is essential and ensures success.”

After an initial start-up and sampling phase, Lico Print moved to its first successful productions. They were so good that the company considered the possibility of introducing a second Monna Lisa Evo Tre 32 16 channels with fluorescent colours to further increase its production capacity.

Livio said: “Thanks to the use of Monna Lisa Evo Tre 32 16 channels fluorescent inks, we can offer to strategic customers brilliant colour samples, with a unique colour range which was unthinkable until now.”

Founded in 1994, Armine took its first steps in the textile sector as a prominent industrial reality in the silk processing and printing Turkish market. Initially focused exclusively on the production of scarves, in 2006 the Turkish company decided to expand its production and began working on a wide range of women’s clothing. Armine gained recognition, especially from those in the ready-to-wear sector. In 2014, with the introduction of digital printing, the company established itself on the national market, becoming a very popular brand. Today, with 640 employees and 52 stores in the country, Armine is one of the leading Turkish companies in the women’s clothing sector.

The Company

Before the introduction of Monna Lisa, Armine mostly used traditional printing. The cost-benefit ratio of this type of printing was unsustainable – the company faced high production costs even for small orders. An unsatisfactory cost-benefit ratio together with the need for a flexible and streamlined printing process - which could allow demand-based quantities and avoid small-order waste and surplus storage issues - drove Armine to digital solutions. In 2014, after careful research to

find a printing solution suitable for meeting changing production needs, the company decided to rely on Epson’s Monna Lisa digital printers’ quality and reliability.

“With Monna Lisa we could experience unparalleled versatility, and an extreme colour rendering precision. Our customers are highly satisfied – much more than before.”

Designed by Epson and F.lli Robustelli with Epson’s innovative and unique PrecisionCore proprietary printing technology, the Monna Lisa Evo Tre 32 offers high productivity quality while ensuring the versatility that the modern increasingly dynamic fashion market requires. One printer can be used for the most varied production needs.

No printing solution has an ink change system like Monna Lisa Evo Tre, which ensures the reduction of time and maintenance costs. This means a drastically reduced production time and in-line sampling with production, which is crucial to satisfy a demanding market, like the clothing sector, constantly looking for innovation.

Thanks to the implementation of Epson’s Monna Lisa printers, Armine reduced the inevitable costs imposed by traditional printing, while achieving a rapid positive market response.

Halit Telli, Production Manager at Armine said: “With Monna Lisa we could experience unparalleled versatility, and an extreme colour rendering precision. Our customers are extremely satisfied – much more than before.”

One of the biggest benefits of Armine using Epson’s digital printers is the ability to print on fabrics of any size – even for small orders. This was unthinkable with traditional printing that requires a pre-determined minimum amount of fabric to start printing.

Monna Lisa digital printing proved to be highly cost-effective compared to traditional rotary screen printing, as it uses less space and saves significant resources in terms of energy and ink.

Halit Telli said: “At the moment our digital printing department is working with two Monna Lisa Evo and one Monna Lisa Evo Tre. Given the feedback and praise we are receiving from our customers and the market, we are seriously considering increasing the number of Epson devices. It’s a great solution that fully meets our production needs and quality standards. It is a complete, fully integrated system that guarantees maximum support throughout the production cycle.”

Birlik Örme has been manufacturing clothing and accessories since 1973, and is now one of the leading companies in the Turkish textile industry. With a manufacturing capacity of 600-750 tons per year, Birlik Örme has specialised in the production of an extensive selection of textiles, including polyester, cotton, mixed linen and 100% linen, all digitally printed using only reactive inks.Featuring a production area of 25,000 m2, together with its affiliate Akincilar Textile (specialised in manufacturing knitwear, dyeing and ready-to-wear), Birlik Örme determinedly pursues its mission of maintaining the highest standards of quality and customer satisfaction. Geared mainly towards the international market, Birlik Örme directly exports 85% of its production throughout the world. Moreover, with a deep awareness of sustainable innovation, in 2016 the company started a new partnership with a very important brand and commenced an upgrade of its production processes to meet the requirements of international sustainable production standards.

The Company

Birlik Örme bought its first Monna Lisa in January 2009, year after year reconfirming its trust in the remarkable features of this printer. One of the reasons that led the company to choose Monna Lisa as the only printing technology in its laboratory is, undoubtedly, its cutting-edge technology, the excellent colour balance of prints, the quality of the machine’s components―especially the print heads, which last much longer than others―and the guarantee of ongoing innovation, a crucial factor in keeping up with rapid changes in

the textile industry. In addition, the prompt supply of spare parts and a highly satisfactory technical service with immediate response, even remotely, are a great support.

“The number of customers requiring high quality digital printing is steadily increasing together with the market for this kind of printing. Epson and Monna Lisa have made us part of this continually evolving flow.”

With five Monna Lisa Evo Tre 32 machines, Birlik Örme has now broken into markets all over the world, including Europe. Developed by Epson and Fratelli Robustelli, Monna Lisa Evo Tre 32 features innovative proprietary Epson PrecisionCore printing technology, incorporated for the first time into the Monna Lisa Evo Tre series, and matchless flexibility that makes it possible to meet the widest range of production requirements.Monna Lisa Evo Tre combines quality, high productivity and extensive reliability and is one of the most versatile digital textile printers available on the market. Moreover, the entire range of

Genesta inks, including the Genesta reactives used by Birlik Örme, is guaranteed by the OEKO-TEX® ECO PASSPORT certification. To obtain this certification, the inks were subjected to two series of controls, including screening of chemical compounds in the ingredients using the list of OEKO-TEX® Restricted Substances and the list of Manufacturing Restricted Substances. Genesta inks are, therefore, certified for the sustainable production of ecological textile products, and printers who use them in their production processes are sure of meeting the chemical requirements of OEKO-TEX® STANDARD100.

Most of Birlik Örme’s customers are exporters. Their expectations can be summarised in three points: high product quality, colour fastness and speed in production departments. Monna Lisa Evo Tre has fully met these expectations, and has definitely convinced the Turkish company that it made the right choice.

“Monna Lisa presents distinct advantages compared to the competition, first of all its reliability. Once you start using a printer of this standard you no longer wish to go back”, says Mustafa Catalkaya, Digital Print Manager at Birlik Örme.

Despite the ruthless competition, the benefits for companies that rely on Monna Lisa textile digital printing are indeed incomparable, particularly in the long term.

“If we consider the last 10 years, much progress has been made in Turkey, compared to the traditional printing market. The continuous discussion with our international clientele and market needs and requirements, mainly with regard to digital printing, spur us on to constantly improve our offer, implementing our vision of business and our mission,” states Catalkaya.

“The number of customers requiring high quality digital printing is constantly increasing together with the market for this kind of printing. Epson and Monna Lisa have made us part of this continually evolving flow.” He concludes by saying, “At the moment, we operate only with digital printing using reactive inks, but we do not rule out the possibility of diversifying into home textiles and pigment printing.”
