“Grief & the Holidays” Presentation

Offered through the Ministry of Consolation

Tuesday, November 19 6:30pm - 9:00pm in the Parish Hall

The holidays are an especially hard time when grieving the loss of a loved one. The season renews memories, family ties and traditions. We become painfully aware that our special loved one is no longer present. This is often difficult for families. The pain of the loss is con-fused with the spirit of the season.

“Grief and the Holidays” is a workshop de-signed to help those who are grieving and their families to better understand the grief process, how it affects us during the holidays and how we can use this special time to continue to heal. Anyone is invited, but we ask that you RSVP through the parish office

Advance Directives The United States Conference of Bish-ops urges Catholics to consider Designating a proxy decision maker to make health care de-cisions for them should They become incapaci-tated and unable to decide for themselves. They urge the use of Advance Directives to ap-point a health care agent who understand and shares Catholic values, and can help to apply them to the medical situation at hand.

Many of us have taken care of having a directive and have possibly given a copy to your doctor.

If you need a blank copy that has the approval of the United States Bishops, please come by the office for a copy or we can email you a copy.

*We will NOT fill it out this form for you, you must do this on your own.*

LIFE IS HARD, BUT HAVE NO FEAR

Today’s readings take a fearless look at re-ality and reach a conclusion that we all know: life is hard. The prophet Malachi preaches fire and brimstone, warning us that evildoers will perish in flames. Saint Paul offers his own warning to the Thessalonians: keep busy, but never become a busybody. He reminds Chris-tians that the apostles themselves worked in “toil and drudgery” as a model for how we ought to contribute to our community. The Gospel returns to the apocalyptic tone of Mal-achi, describing the utter chaos of the end-times. We will know the end is near when vio-lence, catastrophe, and hatred dominate the earth. But we must not fear! God’s saving plan brings peace to our hearts. Malachi speaks of the sun’s “healing rays,” and Jesus himself promises to protect every hair on our heads. Copyright © J. S. Mission San Jose a moment of History…

Roofing systems – Thatched roofs cont.… Smaller structures of thatched roofs would have a one-piece ridge beam while longer buildings would have a series of rafter units with ridged beams connecting them. Light rafters running from the wall top to the ridge beam supported the roofing between each raft-er unit. Horizontal poles fastened to these light rafters formed a framework to which the thatching was attached. Frequently a second set of horizontal poles would be lashed on top of the thatching to aid in securing it to the roof structure. Thatching consisted of bundles of grass or reeds. Principle joints in the roof structures were formed by fitted notches, peg-ging, or nails depending on available resources and expected lifetime of the building. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

We are faced with strong and disturbing read-ings today that hold a certain fascination, since they seem at first glance to be blueprints for future inevitable wars and hardship. A fundamentalist in-terpretation focuses on this aspect. Yet we hear them at our Sunday celebration of the Eucharist, which infuses them with hope and optimism. Ra-ther than dreading the future, today’s liturgy as-sures us that God is with us in all of life’s inevitable trials, and that we have a role in shaping the out-come of human history. Occasionally, some Chris-tians have attempted to decode these readings for an exact measure of the world’s end, but they have thus far been disappointed.

“Nothing lasts forever” is a lyric from a Broad-way show. Stars fall from the sky, leaves wither and fall, mountains wash into the sea, human projects and governments totter and collapse with great reg-ularity. Today’s liturgy opposes this idea as incom-plete, reminding us that Christ has made a perma-nent change in human history, and that life in him is life forever. Rather than inviting us to throw in the towel, today’s liturgy strengthens us for acts of goodness and grace in our families, communities, and world. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
