A. What is the tabernacle?

One of the primary and most distinctive fixtures of any Catholic church is a

box or cabinet, typically made of gold placed in the front and center of a

church. The exact shape varies, but you will most often find a red vigil lamp

lighted next to it.

As Catholics we call the box a tabernacle and it contains the “holy of holies,”

Jesus present in the Eucharist.

The word tabernacle means “dwelling place” and refers to the “tent of meet-

ing” that the Israelites built to facilitate their worship of God in the desert

(Exodus 26). God commanded Moses’ brother Aaron, the chief priest, to of-

fer sacrifice within the Tabernacle, and specified that three things be kept

inside:

1. The Ark of the Covenant

2. The golden lampstand (Menorah)

3. The golden table of the Bread of the Presence

B. Why is the red candle lit at the altar?

Because of the honor given to Christ’s body and blood, a red votive candle, known

as the sanctuary lamp, is traditionally lit beside the tabernacle to show that it contains

the consecrated elements. The sanctuary lamp reminds Catholics that Jesus is pre-

sent in the tabernacle, and churchgoers often pray before the tabernacle and reflect

on the mystery of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist.

Catholic Teaching on Labor

Question: As we celebrate Labor Day, can you tell me about Catholic teaching regarding labor? Answer: One of the most important principles of Catholic social teaching is the dignity of work & the rights of workers. Four encyclicals address this foundational social teaching: Rerum Novarum (1891) by Leo XIII, Quadrages-imo Anno (1931) by Pius XI, Laborem Exercens (1981), & Centesimus Annus (1991) by John Paul II. They address both the theology & dignity of work. In Genesis, God takes the initiative in creating the world, calling forth human beings to be faithful stewards of creation. We are thus formed to share in God’s continuing creative activity by partnering with God in finishing the world and helping bring it to completion and fulfillment. From this perspec-tive, work can be spiritually understood in terms of sharing in God’s ongoing activity to build, create, and transform the world. Human beings are co-creators with God. This vocation demands self-discipline.

Besides an exercise in self-discipline, work is also the means by which we develop and fulfill ourselves. In work, we shape the world and our environment. Through work, we also shape ourselves. Pope John Paul II summarized this point in Laborem Exercens #6, “the value of work is not primarily the kind of work being done, but the fact that the one who is doing it is a person.”

Labor Day offers an excellent opportunity to reflect on how we view work in light of our Catholic social teaching.

©LPi

“If God is for us, who can be against us?” - Rm 8:31

AAleteia BThe Meaning of a Red Candle on the Altar of a Catholic Church

(synonym.com)

¿Sabes?

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Nativity of Mary, the Marymas or the Birth of the Virgin Mary, refers to a Christian feast day celebrating the birth of Mary, mother of Jesus.

The modern canon of scripture does not record Mary's birth. The earliest known account of Mary's birth is found in the Protoevangelium of James (5:2), an apocryphal text from the late second century, with her parents known as Saint Anne and Saint Joachim.

In the case of saints, the Church commemorates their date of death, with Saint John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary as the few whose birth dates are commemorated. The reason for this is found in the singular mission each had in salvation history, but traditionally also because these alone were holy in their very birth (for Mary, see Immaculate Con-ception; John was sanctified in Saint Elizabeth's womb according to the traditional interpretation of Luke 1:15).

Devotion to the innocence of Mary under this Marian title is widely celebrated in many cultures across globe. Wikipedia
