The Pastor's Corner

When we last left Saint Teresa she had begun a reformed convent where she and a few other nuns were to live under the original Carmelite rule. Not everyone was happy about this departure from the status quo (hmmm, what a surprise!). The nuns in her old convent accused her of seeking after vain glory and the town of Avila thought that this new convent would be a financial drain, in as much that it did not have a dowry (wealthy parents payment to the convent upon the entrance of their daughter). But alas, Teresa had both longevity as a nun and friends in high places so her experimental order was permitted to continue. When you look at our window of St. Teresa you see that she is holding a book and a quill pen which relates to her writings which began during her first five years in the new convent. She developed a constitution of reforms, wrote an autobiography and kept journals on her mystical visions and interior communications. Her book entitled "The Way of Perfection" introduced her spiritual philosophy to the outside world, inspiring many to embrace the spiritual life. After the Father General of the Carmelites inspected her experimental monastery he was so impressed that he asked her to team up with Saint John of the Cross to start similar houses for men. Teresa traveled all over Spain to found more convents and monasteries braving ice storms, searing sun, filthy inns, thieves and her own failing health. Yet the most severe challenge to her work came from inside the Church itself. She was denounced to the Inquisition and labeled a disobedient gadabout by the Papal Nuncio. Through it all Teresa insisted that the love of God had so taken hold of her that He enabled her to continue her work as a reformer. The Discaled Carmelites were formally separated from the Calced Carmelites and given their own constitution in 1580. Her final book, "The Interior Castle" written in 1577, is her masterpiece. Using the image of a crystal castle of transparent rooms, Teresa guides the soul inwards to discover the voice of Christ. As we come through our north vestibule, and see the image of this great saint may we be reminded to enter our church with the intention not only of speaking to God, but also of LISTENING to his word of love that comforts us when we are hurting and challenges us when we ourselves are in need of reform. St. Teresa, pray for us. St. Teresa's feast day is on October 15. Next week we journey from 16th century Spain to 17th century France where we will meet the patron of charitable works, Saint Vincent de Paul.

Congratulations to our parishioner, Peter Siciliano, for being this year's Grand Marshall of the Madison Memorial Day festivities that took place last Monday - Mr. Siciliano, a long time resident of Madison, is a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. His family moved to Madison when he was five years old. He attended Saint Vincent Martyr School and Madison High School where he was a infielder on the school's baseball team. In 1943 at age 17, Mr. Siciliano joined the United States Marine Corps and reported to Parris Island, South Carolina for basic training. His next assignment took him to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and then west to Camp Pendleton, California. The aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard CV31 delivered Mr. Siciliano and his fellow Marines to Pearl Harbor and then on to the island of Guam. He recalls playing softball on the carrier's flight decks as one form of recreation while at sea. His duties while stationed on Guam included guarding Japanese prisoners of war, scouring the island for possible invading Japanese troops and transporting additional prisoners to Guam from the island of Truk. Following the Japanese surrender, Private First Class Siciliano was promoted to corporal and received an Honorable Discharge.

Semper Fi and Well Done Corporal Siciliano!

MEMORIAL GIFTS

We are hoping to procure 6 candlesticks to enhance our reredos in Church. If you were at the Dedication Mass or Mass of Thanksgiving, you might have noticed the 6 large candlesticks adorning the reredos. These were on loan from Christ the King Parish but we would like to purchase candlesticks for our Church. Each candlestick has a high gloss brass finish and is 26 inches tall and will hold a 12 inch candle. They can be engraved on the bottom with your memorial. The cost is $1,300. per candlestick and we have 2 available. Please let Fr. George know if you are interested or if you would like more specifics.

Stewardship

"As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace" (1 Peter 4:10).

Our parishioners are people of many gifts and talents. In the recent stewardship appeal, many parishioners offered to share their time, treasure and talents with the parish in the service of others. The skills and talents that parishioners have offered to share include:

● nursing ● word processing and computer skills ● sewing ● teaching English as a second language ● drawing ● baking ● playing an instrument ● and many other talents

Thank you to all who have offered to share their skills and talents! If you have a talent or skill to share with others or if you would like more information about stewardship, please contact [email protected].

WHAT IS ORDINARY TIME?

The rhythm of the liturgical seasons reflects the rhythm of life — with its celebrations of anniversaries and its seasons of quiet growth and maturing. Ordinary Time, meaning ordered or numbered time, is celebrated in two segments: from the Monday following the Baptism of Our Lord up to Ash Wednesday; and from Pentecost Monday to the First Sunday of Advent. This makes it the largest season of the Liturgical Year. In vestments usually green, the color of hope and growth, the Church counts the thirty-three or thirty-four Sundays of Ordinary Time, inviting us to meditate upon the whole mystery of Christ – his life, miracles and teachings – in the light of his Resurrection. We grow in our relationship with God and increase in faith when we can walk the Galilee with Jesus and his Disciples and witness the teaching and miracles of Jesus. In the ordinary times of the year, we can find our calling to discipleship. The next two Sundays celebrate two important feasts in the church: the Most Holy Trinity, June 10-11 and the Most Holy Body and Blood of Chrost (Corpus Christi) on June 17-18. The Liturgical color for these Sundays is white.

Family Perspective

Like the disciples in today's gospel, there are times we shut the doors of our hearts to people or events. It's how we create emotional distance. Permanent distancing is lethal and prevents the PEACE Jesus offers you today.

6. El don de fortaleza

enardece al individuo frente

al temor de los peligros.

7. El don de temor (por amor)

de Dios, enardece la

voluntad y el apetito contra

la concupiscencia o los

deseos desordenados.
