Science Warehouse Ltd was formed in March 2000, as the first investment (£6.7m) by the Forward Venture Management Group (established in 1999 by electronics entrepreneur Ray Chamberlain to finance technology spin-offs from UK universities). Science Warehouse Ltd is a business-to-business neutral marketplace provider for the Life Sciences market. The co-founders of the business are both eminent Life Science researchers from Leeds University.Appointed by the Forward Group and reporting to the interim Managing Director, my responsibilities were: Member of the senior management team defining and implementing the

Company profile and responsibilities.

Compass Cleaning Limited was formed in 1982. As a 3i’s financial backed organisation, the Company has enjoyed substantial growth, providing quality-cleaning services to its clients. The Company at the time of my departure was recognised as the fastest growing Contract Cleaning Company within the UK Retail Cleaning Market, with a portfolio of clients that includes:Asda; Boots; Halfords; J. Sainsbury; Marks & Spencer; Somerfield and Tesco.Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, my responsibilities were for the full Profit/ Loss and day-to-day operations of the Company, allowing the CEO to pursue an acquisition or disposal strategy for the Company.

Achievements.

Created and implemented a 3 year business plan to grow to a £40m turn over, £3m profit organisation providing Facilities Management Services in Retail and Commercial (Education, Health and Public sectors) markets.

Increased profits in the first year of the plan from £200,000 FY’98 –’99 to £1 million FY’99 – ’00.

Negotiated and concluded contracts with Tescos, J.Sainsburys and Somerfields that increased annualised revenues from £23 million to £34 million , within 10 months.

Implemented infrastructure cost savings, significantly improving the operation and generating a 15% profit improvement in 1999, with a further 15 % improvement in 2000 through initiatives to control labour costs.

Introduced a new window cleaning division, improving profitability by £300,000 in 2000/01.

Achieved number 1 status in service provision with Marks & Spencer and Somerfield and within the top 3 for all major clients.

Re-positioned the brand with major clients and increasing the portfolio of services.

Contract Termination.

The CEO and 3i’s concluded an exceptional deal with Pall Mall Support Services Ltd to sell the company for £10 Million in April 2000. I extended my interim assignment until July 2000 to continue to run the operation and oversee the closure of the Grantham offices and implement the consequential redundancy programme, together with the merger of the administration functions within the Pall Mall organisation.

Reporting to the MD of the UK Operation, my interim role responsibilities included: Defining the Sales and Marketing Plan for the next Fiscal Year. Implementing a sales and installation re-organisation reducing the cost base by

50%.

Achievements.

Defined new Sales and Marketing Plan and organisation in line with cost reduction plans.

Achieved 150% of the sales plan year to-date during the assignment period, including a major new contract with Hyundai UK (worth £3million over 3 years).

Reduced the cost base by £ 1 million per annum and implemented the redundancy programme for 50% of the staff (41 people in total).

Improved profit performance from 70% to 105 % of plan within 12 months, including 15% growth in new business sales and gross margin contribution.

Project managed the successful relocation and operational re-organisation in 4 countries, including the set-up of a Benelux operation.

Kalamazoo Computer Group Product Development responsibility for the automotive market place, as my product responsibility Elite (based on an Oracle database utilising the forms 4 development environment) had been defined as the Flagship product for both the UK market and the Companies Global objectives.

Formulate and maintain good strategic relationships with the 4 key market target customers: Renault; General Motors; Volvo and the top100 Automotive Retailer Groups.

Achievements.

New Business Sales and margins were 80% of target achieving over 130 site installations within 12 months, making the product roll-out the most successful in the history of the market-place, within this time-frame.

Re-organised operations areas to achieve greater efficiency, problem management and customer satisfaction.

Re-organised the product development team, introducing a new management team in order to achieve greater efficiency and deliverables, whilst achieving a more pro-active market driven product development philosophy.

Datapoint UK Ltd, as part of the US based Datapoint Corporation, was a leading worldwide supplier of networked based IT Solutions. This covered: Data-processing; local area networking; telephony based business solutions and specific vertical market application solutions, of which the Automotive Retail Market-place was their largest customer base with over 70% of Ford Retailers across Europe using a Datapoint solution.I joined Datapoint UK in 1986 having being headhunted to re-position their UK operations within the UK Automotive Market place. My initial role was as Account Manager-North, which I undertook for 2 full Fiscal Years, achieving 150 % of quota each year (sales quota £1 million per annum). After six months I was appointed Manager of one of the Data Control areas, with responsibility for three full and eighty part-time staff. I progressed to client support of Kalamazoo’s Bureau services for the Automotive Retailing Market, in January ’79. In August ’80 I was again promoted to set up the DARTS Central Support area. In August ’93 I was promoted to Account Manager, Darts-South. During the Fiscal Years ‘83-‘85, I achieved 108% and 143% of quota.
