Dear Parents, Students and Friends

Next week begins the process of selecting Marian Catholic College leaders for 2016. Year 11 Pastoral Coordinator, Mrs Segrave has already received a number of nominations for College Captain from this cohort and those selected from the initial list will present a short speech in front of the students next Wednesday morning. An outline of the selection criteria accompanied the nomination form. In essence, students who are selected must have completed a range of community service activities during their time at school. They should be confident in speaking in front of a large audience and be able to juggle the demands of student leadership with their studies. Leadership at this level is not for everyone and students have been informed to think carefully about the criteria and understand that the leadership journey doesn’t begin with the speeches taking place next week but started many years ago and will continue well into the future regardless of attaining a position or not. Following the speeches, voting takes place and after this round a smaller group will be interviewed by the selection panel. The announcement to the College community and handover takes place at the Farewell Assembly of Year 12 on Wednesday 16 September. I am sure that I speak for everyone in wishing all applicants every success.

Our students representing the College on our immersion trip to Paul VI College Samoa have been given the added boost by having a fundraising website launched recently on the gofundme site. Lauren Jenkins who visited with the previous group in 2013 has set up the site and it outlines the project and how to contribute. A newspaper article in the Area News is soon to come out, so as you can see the trip is building momentum. Please visit http://www.gofundme.com/projectsam2015 to learn more.

Marian Catholic College has employed a company to survey our three major stakeholders-students, staff and parents. In the coming weeks each group will be invited to complete an online survey which will help identify our strengths, and make recommendations to facilitate improvement. Providing the best education possible in a catholic learning environment is our primary objective. The surveys will help inform our Master Plan which will be launched early next year.

Peace and Best Wishes

Learning and Teaching News

HSC is 53 days away!

These next few weeks are vitally important as HSC students work towards the exams that serve as the culmination of thirteen years of education. Every lesson counts as students are getting access to last minute advice and tips from their teachers in order to maximize their results. This is a time for finalising summaries and PAST PAPERS, PAST PAPERS, PAST PAPERS! Students are also encouraged to attend Thursday afternoon writing sessions with our literacy expert, Mrs Belinda McKellar to fine tune their written responses.

We are all behind you Year 12! Teachers are here to help in every way possible.

Preliminary Support Evening and Preliminary Exams

Last night Year 11 students and their parents attended the Preliminary Support Evening. Thank you to all those who attended the evening. The more parents understand about the challenges their children are facing, the better equipped they are to support them. As a staff, we would like to thank parents for the continued engagement and support of their child’s education.

The evening was very successful. Mr Holloway provided some very informative tips on how the memory works and Mrs Segrave inspired students to improve their resilience and achieve their goals. Over the page are some tips provided to help demystify Stage 6 exams. When students prepare adequately, there should be no tricks or surprises.

One message that was very clear is that students need to believe in themselves and make smart choices in order to achieve their goals. Students need to look at the Year 11 and 12 journey as a marathon, not a sprint. Consistent dedication and effort will get you over the line! Students in Year 11 should take some time to reflect on what they are doing well and what they could do to improve before they enter the HSC year in Term 4.

The Preliminary Examination Timetable will be included in next week’s newsletter. Parents and students are reminded to follow Stage 6 exam procedures and in the event of illness/misadventure, must contact the school on the day and provide relevant evidence.

Demystifying Stage 6 exams

Where do exam questions come from?

Know your key verbs and how to apply them!

http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/syllabus_hsc/glossary_keywords.html

2. Know your syllabus!

What is the syllabus?

The syllabus is an outline of the course content knowledge, understanding and skills required for each topic of the course.

1. Where do I find the syllabus?

http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/syllabus_hsc/

2. What do I do with the syllabus?

Know the wording of the syllabus

Define all the terminology in the syllabus (know a synonym when you see it!)

Create a summary of every dot point and relevant section to be tested (check with your teacher)

Create dot point study cards

Summarise your summary

Test yourself using the “Look, cover, write and check” method

Create mind maps to show the connection between concepts

3. Predict questions from the syllabus

Create questions using the BOS verbs and syllabus dot points

Test your summary notes by answering the questions you have created

4. Do Past Papers! - The nature of the questions do not vary that much

5. Remember to learn from those who have gone before you :)

LIBRARY NEWS

August 22-28 is Children’s Book Week - the theme is :

BOOKS LIGHT UP OUR WORLD

The Library is holding a poster competition for Book Week, Students from Years 7 & 8 and Years 9 & 10 can design a poster or book mark, or write an advertisement for a book they have read.

During the week there will be a Homeroom Trivia competition.

Books truly light up our world in so many different ways. They shed light into dark places by bringing education to those who want it. Books bring the world to life for us, enabling us to travel to distant lands without leaving our homes and even venture into space or fantasy worlds. They empower us, entertain us, educate us and bring us closer to others. Books help us to grow as human beings.

Congratulations to Jack Martin who achieved the following

results at the Leeton Eisteddfod

Open Section

1st in vocal duo

16yrs & under

1st in vocal duo

4 x 1st in vocal solos

1 x 3rd vocal solo

There are 5 places left on the Flight Attendant/Tourism Taste of TAFE session on Thursday 27 August.

This week the “Community Action Team” launched their canned/tin

food drive. So far the response has been

positive and we would to say “THANK

YOU” to those who have donated.

We will continue to collect donations up

until Friday 4th September. All donations

big or small are extremely appreciate.

Next Thursday 27th August the Year 11 Well-being Committee will host activities to

acknowledge R U OK DAY? This day is an annual day in September dedicated to remind

people to ask family, friends and colleagues the question, "R U OK?", in a meaningful way,

because connecting regularly and meaningfully is one thing everyone can do to make a

difference to anyone who might be struggling.

We will be celebrating earlier to accommodate

year 11 exams.

The well-being committee will host a variety of

activities specifically with year 7 to broadened

their knowledge around the concept of R U OK

Day, develop skills to recognise when someone is

not ok and help students learn the skill to

effectively ask R U OK?

Students can wear casual and have been asked to make a

gold coin donation.

There will be a cupcake stall available and lunch time

activities including a

student versus staff challenge in traditional games like 3

legged races and egg and spoon race.

We look forward to the week ahead

Have a great weekend and stay safe

This week saw the students complete their final work placement unit for the 2 year Business Services HSC course. The general feedback from the employers was one of confidence in the students' ability to perform independently. Working in a bustling workplace, dealing with fellow workers, customers and suppliers is an ideal environment for developing skills such as problem-solving, initiative and planning. Not to mention how to photocopy double-sided with the density turned down or transfer a phone call from a stranger to a co-worker you've never met! The students showed a significant improvement from their first work placement in term 2 as they move towards being work ready for whichever career path they choose. Well done class. MCC would sincerely like to thank the businesses that hosted our students. Without this support we could not provide this opportunity to our students. Joseph Bugge Rural Fire Service, Kayla Charles Aboriginal Legal Service Ebony Favero TAFE - Griffith, Michael Gulielmini Hutcheon & Pearce, Ella Salvestro NRMA, Rosario Virgara National Parks and Wildlife Service, Daniella Reginato Caesars Emporium/Knock on Wood and Andre Peterson MIA Coaches.

MCC are studying individual sports through SLR and were looking at the Olympic sport of clay target shooting. We were fortunate enough to go to the Griffith Gun Club and be instructed by John, Fred and Scott. The three instructors are among the highest qualified in Australia at the moment and the boys learnt a lot with minimal bruising (Dwayne). Stand outs were Andrew

Raccanello, Robert Castle and Jayden Richens, bring on Rio 2016.

The MCC Team went to Westend stadium to keep the Tri-Sports shield at Marian. Unfortunately we came away with a second. But not after some scintillating badminton action & amazing Basketball skills! Overall we won in badminton, came 2nd in basketball and 3rd in volleyball putting us behind 1st place by 2 points!

This week MCC celebrates Science Week. There have been many interactive and hands-on experiments conducted in classes to mark this event. One fun task and competition the science department are running is a paper plane flying contest where students embed their design skills and incorporate science into the factors associated with designing a model that is travels the longest distance. Students got to demonstrate their models at the finals for the best of each class which took off on today. Mitch Salvestro was the winner of the Contest.

St.Bernard of Clairveaux (1090 - 1153) was the most popular guy in town; handsome, funny and intelligent. When he was 17 his mother died and he began to slip into a depression. But, his sister encouraged him to be

cheerful and to keep trusting in Jesus.

A short time later he announced to his family and friends that he wanted to be a priest, and so he joined the monastery to begin his studies. He was so popular that his brothers, an uncle and 26 of his mates followed him

to the monastery. St. Bernard had many talents and used them all to the glory of God.

This Sunday at Mass we read that many of Jesus' followers leave Him because they find what Jesus taught impossible to follow. Let us use St. Bernard as our inspiration and let us unite all of our talents, as well

as our weaknesses, to the warm heart of Jesus.

After several rain delays over the last few weeks, our school finally got a chance on Wednesday to contribute

to the Planet Arc Schools Tree Day. In keeping with the Geography component of HSIE (Human Society and

its Environment), 2 classes from year 7 were able to plant over 300 trees and shrubs. The Griffith area is part

of a natural Woodland habitat, situated between the more dense forests to the east and scrubland (dominated

by shrubs) to the west. The trees, shrubs and groundcover plants are more widely spaced in Woodland areas

because the environment is drier. Over 20 different species were planted by the students from 7HSIE3 and

7HSIE5, including Bimble Box and White Cypress Pine. The corridor on Citrus Rd Collina will provide habitat

for native fauna to utilise and move throughout the landscape. A big thank you to all the students and

teachers for their enthusiastic contribution and also to Joanne Tarbit, Griffith Council's Environmental Planner

for ensuring the sustainability of these plantings into the future. These activities are also in keeping with

Bishop Hanna's Mandate of Stewardship - caring for people, creation and resources.
