LENT

What do we do when we’re facing an upcoming big event, celebration, or special occasion in our lives? We prepare for it. Holy Week and Easter are “big events” in the liturgical year of the Church and in the spiritual life

of a Christian. So, as Christians, we prepare spiritually for these through the forty days of Lent. This means that, during Lent, we rededicate ourselves to prayer. There are as many ways to pray as there are pray-ers in this world, but a few prayer methods can help us in particular to spiritually prepare ourselves during Lent: Make

abstinence a prayer or make a commitment to do something positive for others a prayer...Whenever you encounter the thing you are abstaining from or making an effort to do something for others, take a moment to

say a prayer in recognition of your wholeness in God. Thank God for the freedom to be wholly yourself without this or in what you have done to help someone else.

Dear Parents, Students and Friends

Marian Catholic College Vision and Mission Statement is being reviewed and the staff have been working since last year with representatives of the Catholic Schools Office on redefining our Vision (Primary Goal) and Mission (How we achieve this goal). On the next page of this newsletter I have included our work to date, Final Draft and invite your comment via our email address. We are looking to “launch” our new statement on our College Feast Day-21st May, the Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians.

Next week, Year 12 will be on Retreat. Year12 Coordinator Mr Herb, Homeroom Teachers, Liturgy Coordinator Mrs Aventi, and the Marian Director of Pastoral Care, Mr Holloway have put together a program which will help both personally and collectively challenge the group to make real our College motto, The Way, The Truth, The Life. The theme they have chosen is “Hall of Fame”- How can you make your mark today and into the future which reflects the best of yourself and the group. Our Chaplain, Fr Rafter will also be joining the group at Warrambui Retreat and Conference Centre, Murrumbateman. I ask that you keep them in your prayers.

Catholic Schools Week, March 8-14 is rapidly approaching. The theme is ‘ Educating for Today and Tomorrow’. More about this next week. Year 12 Physics are studying Electromagnetism and its application with DC motors.

Physics is a practical and theoretical subject, as is all science study, and students enjoyed opening an electric drill to examine the parts of the motor. They were also able to explain the force and the energy change from electrical energy to mechanical rotational energy. The extensive language used to describe the motor was reinforced. The students are currently preparing for their Mid Course exams in a few weeks.

Year 9 stage 5.1 students have been studying percentages and GST. A discussion about the necessity of taxation and how the Governments use the money that is raised by taxation, informed the students on the social responsibilities that they will have as income earners. Students compared prices and calculated GST paid on supermarket items and were then able to calculate discounts given on sale items.

Students also worked with Flashcards to improve the neural pathways by mentally and quickly rounding decimals and converting between fractions, decimals and percentages of the commonly used quantities.

Students worked well and were engaged in all activities.

Last year the Year10 Child Studies class were very busy attending and interacting with children from Griffith East Preschool as well as having a few guest speakers attend their classes to speak about Parenting, Children with Special Needs, Children and Play and Conception to Birth.

We have been fortunate to have developed a close relationship with the Maternity Ward at the Griffith Base Hospital. Last November we spent a couple of hours at the Maternity Ward speaking to 2 wonderful midwives, attending the pregnancy care clinic, meeting a new baby as well as having a tour of the refurbished ward. The girls thoroughly enjoyed their time and the opportunity to attend the hospital.

The girls also created some String Art as part of the unit ‘Children and Play’, below are some examples of their great work.

The girls also participate in the Real Care Parenting Program where they take a virtual baby home for 48hrs to care for him or her. The virtual babies cry randomly and the girls are their mums and need to work out why the baby is crying. The girls use a capsule, pram and nappy bag of which they carry around. The opportunity to participate in this program really opens up their eyes in getting a glimpse of being a parent.

We also had the privilege of having Mrs Patten (Raso) visit our classroom with the beautiful Miss Georgie yesterday. The girls loved having her visit and enjoyed having cuddles with Georgie.

This year the girls will be attending Dorothy Waide Centre for Early Learning for some valued work placement to better their skills and learn through more hands on experience.

The girls will also be working with the Maternity Ward in a project to help beautify the hospital and their surroundings by some artwork.
