Year 12 exams

The Mid Course HSC examinations continue next week. The Week 11 timetable is as follows:-

Week 11-C

8th April – 10 April

Year 8 Assignment and Research Skills Books

At a Year 8 meeting this week, students were given an Assignment and Research Skills Handbook to assist with the

assignment process. These books have been given to Year 8 students in order to improve their ability to:

break down assessments into smaller and more manageable chunks ;

create a logical structure;

develop good research skills and keep an accurate record of all resources used; and

turn their draft into a polished final version.

We encourage parents to look through these books with their students and to encourage their children to utilise these

great resources.

MCC Games Group

This week was the first round of the NSW Junior Chess League for Marian Catholic College. The team travelled to Hay War Memorial High School. MCC won all four games. Congratulations to the team who showed strong focus, well thought out strategies, and were gracious in victory.

Both teams ended the match with a game of Double Chess for fun. This is a variant of Chess that requires four players and two chess sets. After the seriousness of playing competition Chess, Double Chess is a great way for the students to unwind.

At the end of this term the Games Group will have finished the second round of the MCC Chess Competition. Students can still join at any stage except the finals to be held in Term 4.

Autumn 2014 Western Riverina Junior Chess Competition Tournament to be held in Griffith.

CHEMISTRY EXCURSION

As part of the Preliminary Chemistry Syllabus, students must com-

plete studies on 'Metals'. On the 1st of April, 6 Year 11 students and

Ms Davis headed to the Lake Cowal Gold Mine to investigate the

steps involved in extracting metals from their ores and look at the eco-

nomic viability of a large scale mine. The students were able to tour

the mine and Sammie the Chemical Engineer gave them a detailed

run through of the extraction process - some students nearly passed

out with excitement!! Students were even able to hold an ounce of

pure gold in their hands (worth $1280). The students gained a valua-

ble insight into the mining process and Jacob was able to make

friends with the ladies from the Probus group, who couldn't keep their

hands off him!! Thanks to the people at the Lake Cowal Conservation

Centre for facilitating our trip.

Netbooks As part of receiving a Netbook, students were advised of the need to bring it fully charged to the College every day. Students are also reminded that they are to be carried around in their supplied bag for protection of the Netbook. This is to limit any damage that may occur to the Netbook and to keep repair costs to to a minimum for families if something does happen. Can parents please remind their child to make sure the Netbook is fully charged and that it is being transported in the supplied bag; not left at home or in their locker.Netbooks are NOT to be carried around like a book in their arms. Chargers are to be kept at home and not used in the classroom. Using them in the classroom creates a trip hazard and is a breach of Work, Health & Safety (WHS). If students are exeriencing issues with charging their Netbooks, please see the IT department in room C6 to resolve the issue.
