Good and gracious God, we walk every day
in the light and hope of resurrection.
Help us to live each day in gratitude, for the gift of our very being.
Move our hearts and minds to share the gifts of life and hope.
Help us to seek freedom from all that binds us in slavery.
We pray this through Christ, who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Dear Parents, Students and Friends
Marian Cross Country will take place on Thursday 10th April and you will find the details further into this
newsletter. The day will conclude with a College Social Back to The 80’s in the evening from 7.30-10pm. Parents
and students please be aware that all students attending MUST return the permission to attend slip no later than
next Wednesday April 9. Notes are available from the office. Usual College rules apply for behaviour, as well as
dress. Parents please ensure that appropriate arrangements are made for drop off at and pick up as close as
possible to start and finish times.
Staff Professional Learning Day-Friday 11th April On the last day of this term teachers will be spending time
discussing Assessment guidelines from the Board of Studies and allowable adjustments to the curriculum. We will
be also looking at ways to improve student written responses as highlighted in our NAPLAN analysis from 2013.
Staff are also working in faculty groups to review our report format which you will see later in the year.
The Marian Catholic College Council AGM was held last week the following parent representatives were
returned: Nigel Kennedy, Janice Seton, Michael Favero, Brendan Catanzariti and Simon Aventi (as the staff
representative). Michael Ryan is the new Chairperson and new member is Lindy Golden. Fr Grace represents Fr
Neru on the Parent Council. We also thank Craig McIver who has completed his term on the Parent Council. Craig
has retired as Chairperson and has given many years of service to the College. His advice and wisdom have been
greatly appreciated and as an ex-student we also thank him for his continued involvement in our College.
ANZAC Day 2014 As is customary, all students are invited to represent the College at the march on April 25.
Students are to wear full winter uniform with blazers. Each year Marian has a large turn out and I am hoping for
a similar number or bigger this year. Students will have their participation recorded as Community Service. The
Pastoral Coordinators will be collecting names. The Griffith ANZAC Committee have also approached Mr Holloway
and Mr Herb as they are looking for student volunteers to help place flowers and crosses on the graves of returned
servicemen and women at the Griffith cemetery. Students who
wish to participate in this community service are asked to leave
their names with Mr Herb. Marian will be holding an ANZAC
Assembly upon return to school next term.
Peace and Best Wishes

Year 12 exams
The Mid Course HSC examinations continue next week. The Week 11 timetable is as follows:-
Week 11-C
8th April – 10 April
Year 8 Assignment and Research Skills Books
At a Year 8 meeting this week, students were given an Assignment and Research Skills Handbook to assist with the
assignment process. These books have been given to Year 8 students in order to improve their ability to:
break down assessments into smaller and more manageable chunks ;
create a logical structure;
develop good research skills and keep an accurate record of all resources used; and
turn their draft into a polished final version.
We encourage parents to look through these books with their students and to encourage their children to utilise these
great resources.

MCC Games Group
This week was the first round of the NSW Junior Chess League for Marian Catholic College. The team travelled to Hay War Memorial High School. MCC won all four games. Congratulations to the team who showed strong focus, well thought out strategies, and were gracious in victory.
Both teams ended the match with a game of Double Chess for fun. This is a variant of Chess that requires four players and two chess sets. After the seriousness of playing competition Chess, Double Chess is a great way for the students to unwind.
At the end of this term the Games Group will have finished the second round of the MCC Chess Competition. Students can still join at any stage except the finals to be held in Term 4.
Autumn 2014 Western Riverina Junior Chess Competition Tournament to be held in Griffith.
CHEMISTRY EXCURSION
As part of the Preliminary Chemistry Syllabus, students must com-
plete studies on 'Metals'. On the 1st of April, 6 Year 11 students and
Ms Davis headed to the Lake Cowal Gold Mine to investigate the
steps involved in extracting metals from their ores and look at the eco-
nomic viability of a large scale mine. The students were able to tour
the mine and Sammie the Chemical Engineer gave them a detailed
run through of the extraction process - some students nearly passed
out with excitement!! Students were even able to hold an ounce of
pure gold in their hands (worth $1280). The students gained a valua-
ble insight into the mining process and Jacob was able to make
friends with the ladies from the Probus group, who couldn't keep their
hands off him!! Thanks to the people at the Lake Cowal Conservation
Centre for facilitating our trip.

Netbooks As part of receiving a Netbook, students were advised of the need to bring it fully charged to the College every day. Students are also reminded that they are to be carried around in their supplied bag for protection of the Netbook. This is to limit any damage that may occur to the Netbook and to keep repair costs to to a minimum for families if something does happen. Can parents please remind their child to make sure the Netbook is fully charged and that it is being transported in the supplied bag; not left at home or in their locker.Netbooks are NOT to be carried around like a book in their arms. Chargers are to be kept at home and not used in the classroom. Using them in the classroom creates a trip hazard and is a breach of Work, Health & Safety (WHS). If students are exeriencing issues with charging their Netbooks, please see the IT department in room C6 to resolve the issue.
