by Ken Archer
The Cruising Division got off to a great start to our 2018 cruising activities with a barbecue at Sandy Beach on 17th February (see separate report). We also had a very well attended General Meeting 12th February. At least 20 boats have registered for the Pittwater Cruise starting 4th March, so the year is certainly getting great support from our members for our activities. We also welcome new members Cherie and Eckhard Platen (Seeadler – Seawind 1160), Kent and Heidi Weathers (Elandria – Romack 52), Austin and Jillian Lawrence (Korawinga – Cape Barron Goose) and Trevor Smith (Mijo – Holeman Pye) to the Cruising Division. We hope you all have enjoyable experiences with the Cruising Division and are able to join in with our many activities. It seems difficult to believe that our AGM is our next Meeting on 26th March following the Pittwater Cruise. The current Committee held its final meeting on Tuesday night 27th February. I again encourage our members to consider standing for the Committee. We would especially welcome some of our newer members to consider nominating. Finally, I would like to wish all you swinging 60’s people a very successful and enjoyable Pittwater Cruise. It’s great to see so many boats registered to take part. Unfortunately, the crew of “Migaloo” will not be making the trip this year due to family commitments, but we will be there in spirit. We look forward to seeing some great pictures and stories on Facebook. Happy cruising
Ken
It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Carolyn Hodgson.
Carolyn with her husband Ernie have been members of our CD since the early
2000’s when they launched their Adams “Weatherorknot” and were regular
participants in the various activities of the Division.
Sadly more recently Carolyn’s illness prevented them continuing with their boating
activities. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to share these times together will have
many fond memories of Carolyn, her beautiful smile and softly spoken voice.
Carolyn loved her time on board, she would often be seen in the cockpit, especially early in the
morning, either drawing, sewing or fishing and she loved teaching her grandchildren how to fish
and row and enjoy the pleasures of being on the water.
We remember Carolyn as a delightful gentle lady who will be sadly missed by those of us who
have had the pleasure of spending time with her.
Our sympathies and condolences go out to Ernie and all the family at this very sad time.

Topic/speaker ideas very welcome.
OTHER REPORTS:
Aquatic Services:
• Long stayers on Valentine and F Jetty. Valentine Jetty now more available – coincidence of Rangers
and Maritime turning up simultaneously to manage particular offenders. Different challenge at F
Jetty. Efforts now to coordinate between waterways, rangers and possibly the police to ensure
compliance.
• Applied for NSW Boating Now Grants - expect approval by end of this week. Projects include Wangi
RSL jetty, upgrading Toronto Lions Park boat ramp and car parking, Wangi foreshore, Pelican boat
ramp replacement, Speers Pt jetty replacement, Balcolyn Hall Reserve boat, Rathmines Park
seaplane ramp, Bennett Park Boat Ramp, Cams Wharf Boat Ramp, Val Colin boat ramp, Rathmines
Sea Plane ramp, Balance park ramp, Cams Wharf boat ramp.
• Council interested in CD views on style of jetty CD would like as standard. Probably Valentine Jetty
style preferred.
• Boat visit by Maritime – ordered off Cenny’s mooring. They are applying the rules.
• LMYC House Committee.
• Club trading well. Work on flooring in clubhouse planned to start soon. Marina legal matters
progressing.
• It was raised that the western edge of the new marina is missing and hazards to yacht topsides are
exposed. Suggest a sign maybe required to warn skippers as they berth yachts. Ken Archer will
raise with committee.
GENERAL BUSINESS:
• AGM is 26th March. All members encouraged to consider standing for the Committee to ensure a
healthy turnover of members and ideas.
• Shore games have been fabricated for future cruises. Ken Archer thanked Ian Donaldson for his
contribution to this project.
• Ken Archer congratulated John Cotterill for his excellent Cruiseletters.
• Alternative Skippers Handbook from MHYC – John Lemberg outlined the principle behind the MHYC
system and encouraged members to consider whether the CD would like to do something similar. • Eric Burns discussed the news that the future of the LMYC slipway is under review given the
potential new lease conditions. Ken Archer will follow up with LMYC and report back.
• Ian Donaldson requested that consideration be given to extending weekend cruises to include Friday
nights. The committee will consider. Two comments were made that members still working full time
or participating in yacht racing could have difficulty making Friday nights. Saturday and Sunday may
be a better choice.
SAFETY TALK: Greg Harding delivered a briefing based on a recent MOB scenario that went terribly
wrong. Preparation is the key.
RAFFLE: Won by Selma Barry. Takings were $91 RS/KA
MEETING CLOSED: 8:30pm NEXT MEETING: AGM 26 March 2018

CONFIRMATION OF PREVIOUS MINUTES
The minutes of the previous AGM, held on 21/03/2016, were circulated via the Cruiseletter.
SKIPPER’S ANNUAL REPORT:
Thank you all for another successful year for the LMYC Cruising Division. The Division has continued to
provide a safe and enjoyable environment with plenty of opportunities to meet, cruise, learn and have fun.
Membership has continued to steadily gain as word has got out about the value of membership. At the end of
the year – membership stands at 90.
Your committee has been focused on continuing to deliver value for members. Cruisers generally love to share
their knowledge and learn from others. The well attended General Meetings with excellent guest presenters
have met some of this need. The growing Facebook Group has provided another platform to achieve this as
well as providing an efficient means for members to remain connected no matter where the winds may have
taken them.
Personally I would like to acknowledge the excellent support of the committee. They have been a joy to work
with. A number of the committee have had time away travelling during the course of the year and the way that
the absence is seamlessly covered by the remaining committee members is testament to the individual
capability and generosity of committee members.
There has been no shortage of members who have generously jumped in to offer assistance during the year.
The General Meeting would just not be what it is without the tea and coffee made available by Anne Shirtley’s
generous work. The CD balance sheet would look a lot sorrier if it were not for the generosity of the LMYC
Management in providing the monthly raffle prize.
We are particularly appreciative of the work of John Cotterill who has been the Cruiseletter Editor for the past
year. The Cruiseletter is a cornerstone of the Division and John’s regular publications are eagerly read.
I wish to also acknowledge the generosity of Bill Chaseling for continuing to provide audit services for the CD.
We are particularly grateful of the support we receive from the LMYC Board and staff. The use of facilities and
sponsorship of some activities is much appreciated.
I would like to wish the incoming executive and committee all the best for the new sailing season.
John Lemberg

I know, long time no hear. We are just having too much fun.
America has been great. We stayed in Oriental North Carolina for 2 months refitting the yacht.
Mast Out and rewired, rudder off and a new prop shaft and coupling, changed a sticky through
hull and paint and polish. We waited for a canvas person to come but it didn’t happen.
Leanne popped back for a quick trip home and I slaved on the boat. After leaving North Carolina
we slowly made our way up the ICW waterway to Norfolk Virginia. You should see the US navy
assets they have, unbelievable. Then it was up the Chesapeake to Annapolis were we hired a
car and went to Washington and Baltimore.
A lady from Canada joined us for the trip across the C & D Canal and down the Delaware and
then up the coast past New York, up to Block Island and then Martha’s Vineyard. Then to
Newport and Boston by bus. Christine found a fella so stayed in Newport. Back down the Long
Island sound to Port Washington New York where we spent a week doing the sights. Back down
the Coast and into the Delaware and back down the ICW to Oriental for another quick touch-up
to the Paint and Keel and of course we made a quick trip home to reset our Visa entry
requirements.
We made some new friends along the way and even showed a young American couple how to
untie their yacht from a dock so they could buddy boat with us as they had never been on the
water before. They followed us until we got to Georgetown South Carolina where the cold
weather caught up with us. So Liz and Brad decided to have a trip to Singapore. We passaged
offshore until St Johns River where we pulled in to catch up with old friends from Gibraltar. On to
St Augustine and we finally had a new Bimini made. The Christmas lights of St Augustine were
amazing.
We sat in North Lake Worth inlet for a week or so waiting for weather and moved into a marina
Leanne and Derek Tracey Ocean Diamond II

for a few days to provision the boat for the Bahamas. On crossing to the Bahamas we lost our
electronics and made it to Grand Bahama, Port Lucaya with only a compass and Ipad. Here I
travelled by fast ferry back to the states to pick up our now new instruments. Following YouTube
instructions , the install went in without a hitch.
So we have been encased into the Flamingo Bay Marina for 3 weeks using the resort facilities
and again waiting weather and tides as the Bahamas are shallow and a 7 foot draft makes for
some fun times.
So trying to keep it short, we are both well and now have some young Italians aboard to share
some of the duties. Our new plan is to head south through the Bahamas and onto Jamaica or
Cuba and then Panama or San Blas Islands. If we don’t get through the Panama Canal by April
we will spend some time hanging around the Panama area.
Keep Smiling,
Ocean Diamond II

Fourteen boats took part in the first weekend outing of the year which was a barbecue at Sandy
Beach. Most of the fleet met off Coal Point at 1100 hr on Saturday and set off in almost perfect
sailing conditions with a 10-15 kt easterly breeze, which kept nicely consistent for the entire sail
to Sandy Beach. Migaloo certainly enjoyed the conditions, especially with her new folding
propeller! After a well-deserved rest, all crews went ashore around 1500 hr for a social get-
together and barbecue. We were also joined by three other “crews” who drove down to join us.
Conditions were mild and warm, so it was a very enjoyable day out.
After a breezy but comfortable night at anchor, most boats stayed on for the morning and we
went ashore for coffee and a game of Kubb, with our new set recently made by Ian. The sail
home started out in light winds but these quickly built into a strong nor-easterly, with gusts well in
excess of 20kt, so the sail back up the lake was at times a bit exciting!
Overall, everyone seemed to have an enjoyable weekend out on our great lake
