NUTTY GUYSThe comic duo of Rajnath and Bhagwat have gone viral

with their clamour that it is an “illusion” that English is theonly means of progress and that children should haveculture and they should know relationship and love. BEAU-TIFUL. No political party in India will challenge this gemof wisdom If such a haven of love is wrung in.

Our mighty constabulary could be diverted to do moreproductive work with full training in Sanskrit or the locallingo that our myriad States have devised. These two boldmen have shown us the right way and all that needs to bedone is a FULL COURT judgment of the Supreme Courtpresided over by Chief Justice P.Sathasivam that wouldforeclose any attempt by a renegade State to whittle downthe power of the Supreme Court to pass any order thatunites the country in thought, deed, word and action whenmegalomaniacs insist that what they think is what the“makkal” love and deserve.

I entered a school for the first time after friend Hitlerwent bonkers and inaugurated World War 2 and fathersent us packing from Nairobi in 1939 and we reached homesweet home in Konnur in Kerala.

We had a District Board School within shouting distanceof home and my journey in education started there. Atclass 5, Rajah ‘s High School enticed me and a faded-blue-coat-wearing Krishna Marar became my Sanskit teacher.I endured this Godly language until it was time to join theM.C.C. High School in Madras. After a toss up betweenHindi and Malayalam, my own mother tongue, Malayalamwon the day. Hang Bhagawat and Rajnath. I loveMalayalam, my good old mother tongue. I refused to learnTamil even though I have been here since 1945, but helpinghands in my profession always held me aloft. What mat-ters is the ticker called HEART and not the words spewedby the tongue-in-ckeek. Hello Rajnath and Bhagwat, learnMalayalam.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORTemporary fix to bad roads leads to problems again

Sir, Natesan Street and Ka-marajarSalai (Ashok Nagar) arebusy roads which are in bad con-dition. I use these roads regularlyto go to office. The top layer hascome off and the roads are riddledwith potho-les.After repeatedcomplaints to the officials to re-lay the stretch, Chennai Corpora-tion has instead found a shortroute to fix the problem. They havedumped concrete mix for fillingpotholes and leveling the roadsinstead of tarring it.With the re-cent rains, the temporary fix hasagain given way and the road re-mains rough and difficult to motor.Itherefore appeal to the Corpora-tion to re-lay the damaged portionof the roads. – N. Sir, The service lanes of Usman Road, T. Nagar, have been encroached upon by hawkers. This inhibits traffic flow and causes inconvenience to pedestrians. Adding to the woes, autodrivers have converted the lanes into temporary auto stands to look for potential customers.

It is high time Chennai Corporation and traffic officials took action to rid encroachments fromthe service lanes of Usman Road and also the bylanes of nearby streets. – V. Sethuraman,23, P.S. Road, T.Nagar, Ph: 96001 88824

Encroachments hinder traffic on Usman Road service lanes

Sir, With a view to help pedestrians, who literally get squeezed up while moving along theever-busy Ranganathan Street (T Nagar), Chennai Corporation can reserve the bylanebetween Ranganathan Street and Natesan Street exclusively for pedestrians.

The lane is in a bad condition and misused as a urinal by Ranganathan Street shopkeepersand its employees. Persons who wish to reach Mambalam Station can use this lane insteadof going via Ranganathan Street.I appeal to the Corporation to clean up this lane and put itto exclusively use of pedestrians.— V. By Our Staff ReporterIn reply to the petitions filed against the Chennai

Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), its officials have assuredMadras High Court that it will not demolish‘Ramaswami Mudaliar Choultry’, a 100-year-old heri-tage building opposite Central Railway Station,Poonamallee High Road, for the Metro Rail project.

But other commercial structures on the plot, excepta hotel, will have to make way for the project.

The choultry (lodging house) came into existenceafter the government allotted land in August 1888 toRamaswami Mudaliar with a condition that it accom-modate train passengers free of cost. The governmentalso made it clear that it could take back the 1.33-acreland without paying any compensation if it is used forany other purpose. Now the land bears several com-mercial establishments, including a hotel.

In 2010, the government realized that the land wasrequired for the Metro Rail project and also that a largeportion of the property was being used by commercialestablishments on lease or sub-lease, in violation ofthe original grant condition. It sought to take over thechoultry and other properties through the Administra-tor General and Official Trustee (AG & OT), and abatch of petitions were filed against the takeoverattempt.

Rao Bahadur Raja Sir Savalai RamaswamiMudaliar, a dubash during the British regime, con-structed the building for the use of train commuters fora short stay free of cost after they alighted at therailway station. Mudaliar died in 1911 at the age of 71and was buried in a private burial ground off KilpaukGarden Road, Kilpauk. His statue was erected by hisfriends in the choultry.
