Objection to vending zones inresidential areas

27,195 street vendors in the city will be evicted from roads, andshifted to new vending zones, many of which are in residentialareas by the end October.

Most of the 15 town-vending committees, headed by ChennaiCorporation executive engineers, have sent the list of vendingzones in their respective regions to Ripon Buildings, say sources.

The 15-member vending committees comprise six street ven-dors, one resident, a representative from an NGO and civicofficials. Residents in many localities alleged that the demarca-tion of vending zones was done without their knowledge.

Questioning the identification of vending zones based on asimple majority in the town-vending committees, Residents’Welfare Associations claimed that they did not have a voice in thedemarcation of vending zones, which would only lead to more civicissues.

T. Nagar Residents’ Association representative V. S.Jayaraman said that Corporation officials had not informed anyof the associations about the decision on demarcation of vendingzones.

“Our Association is registered with the Corporation, but we donot know who represents the residents in our zone. Corporationofficials might have appointed somebody who would listen tothem,” he said. He demanded that the Corporation appoint moreresidents in its vending committees and that each ward have oneresident representative in the committees.

A resident of T. Nagar, who was affected by the temporaryshifting of vendors from the Kodambakkkam bridge to the nearbylane a few years ago, said that officials permitted vending in frontof houses. Corporation officials said that residents could send incomplaints pertaining to vending zones to executive engineers inthe 15 zones.

“Residents can call 1913 and complain about civic issuescaused by the vending zones in their residential areas,” said anofficial.

Sir, Relaying of Station Road (WestMambalam) was started last month and wasgoing on at a good pace but suddenly the workwas stopped with almost 90% completed.

A 20-meter stretch, which has not been re-laid, poses a danger to motorists. The batteredand milled surface has turned slippery due tothe loose gravel and uneven surface. Adding tothe risk, the recent spell of rains has turned theroad slushy and slippery.

I appeal to the Corporation to resume andcomplete the work soon. V. Padmanabhan, 4/15, Rajaji Street, West Mambalam

Relaying of Station Road stoppedabruptly

Sir, An avenue tree on the pavement of 1stMain Road, Ashok Nagar, near Aavin booth isleaning precariously, and likely to fall on theroad any moment as its roots have weakenedafter the stretch was dug to relay the pave-ment recently.

I appeal to the officials concerned to takeimmediate steps to cut and remove it to pre-vent any untoward incident. Indira ColonyResidents’ Welfare Association, AshokNagar

Leaning tree poses danger

Appeal to desilt storm water drainsSir, The desilting of stormwater drains is a

must ahead of the northeast monsoon. If the work is not carried out, it will lead to

flooding of the roads during heavy rains. As anumber of decades-old houses in streets in theneighbourhood including Motilal Street, T.Nagar are below the road level, rain waterpolluted by garbage and sewage enters thecompounds of these houses/apartment com-plexes after heavy rains.

The desilting of the storm water drains willmitigate this problem to a great extent as mostof the rain water will flow into the drains.

I appeal to Chennai Corporation to desilt thestorm water drains in Motilal Street. V. S.Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Ranganathan Street in bad conditionSir, Thousands of shoppers visit

Ranganathan Street, T. Nagar every day.But the street is in an unhygienic condition

in most parts with tons of garbage and otherwaste generated by the multitude of shopsheaped on the street margins and arounddustbins. With the street not having beenrelaid for over a decade, the surface is unevenand pedestrians suffer after rains with largepuddles of water stagnating on the street.

I appeal to Chennai Corporation to relay thestreet and take steps to maintain it.

It should also organise a mechanism for safedisposal of daily waste generated by shops. V.S. Narayanaswamy, T. Nagar

Sale of organic farm products todayOrganic Farmers Market has organized an exhibition-cum-sale of produce of farmers on

Sunday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m to 1 p.m in 32/44, Madhavan Nair Road, Mahalingapuram, nearAyyappan Temple.

On sale will be indigenous rice varieties including kichli samba hand pounded boiled and rawrice, sona masuri hand pounded raw rice, kullakar boiled rice and aromatic rice, thooyamalli, pulses, sweeteners, salt and cooking oil.

Anand (Organizer) told Mambalam Times that they have aggregated a number of small andmarginal farmers who cultivate only food crops. No middle men are involved and the saleproceeds go directly to the farmers to help them get the maximum benefit. He added that mostof farmers participating in the sale own less than 2 acres of cultivable land and, in spite of failingmonsoon, inadequate support from family members and lack of welfare schemes, are stillpassionate and rooted to the traditional method of farming.

Ticket machines in metrostations reject new notes

The new Rs. 100 and Rs. 200 currency notesare not being accepted by ticket vendingmachines in metro stations forcing commutersto wait in queues at the counters to purchasetickets or top up their smart cards.

Commuters carrying Rs. 500 or Rs. 2,000notes are also discouraged from usingthe machines and are asked to go to thecounters.

Metro rail officials said that all ticket vendingmachines in their stations accept both old andnew currency notes up to Rs.100 denomination. He said that the machines will be calibratedsoon to accept the other new notes.

He added that Rs. 500 and Rs. 2,000 notesare not accepted at the kiosks as they will haveto replenish the machines every few hours withsmaller denominations to tender change tocommuters.

Facial-recognitionattendance system inCorporation School

Facial-recognition based attendance systemdeveloped by Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency(TNeGA) last month has been installed in theCorporation-run school in Prakasam Road, T.Nagar. All students have to enter the schoolpremises through a corridor where a camera isinstalled. They can walk in groups and need noteven pause for a moment in front of the camera.

“All they need to ensure is that their face comeswithin the camera’s frame when they cross it,” saidan official from TNeGA. “Though we are using itonly on experimental mode along with the manualmarking of attendance, we have told the studentsthat only the new system is functional and it isactive till 10 a.m. Since Chennai Corporation hasa cash reward of Rs.1,000 for students with 100%attendance in a year, students are more punctualnow,” said the Headmistress.

The camera is kept active only for the durationwhen the attendance is marked.
